From gold-flaked chocolates to swanky SUVs that look like they’re wheeled straight out of a Bollywood blockbuster, Indian companies are rapidly jazzing up their product lines, even faster than you can say the word "premiumization." But what does this mean for Indian companies and consumers? What is this jazz about premiumization all about? Is it just urban India that’s riding this wave, or has rural India also joined the bandwagon? We decode for you. <h2>What's premium, really?</h2>Imagine you’re eating Pav Bhaji at a roadside thela. Later during the day, you decide to dine out at a fancy, upmarket cafe, only to find Pav Bhaji Fondue on the menu. Same same, but much more expensive—often 5 to 10 times higher—for a little more hygiene and some better ambience! Think of premium products as this fondue. They are a notch up your regular, daily-use products soaps or shampoos, and even cars, all packaged luxuriously, offering just about the right touch of quality. The main differentiator, though, would be the price range. <h2>Driving home premium wellness</h2>A recent report by Nielsen suggests that over 70% of urban Indians are okay with paying a premium for their products. And companies are cashing in on this sentiment like never before. This explains why 58% of new products launched so far this year have been in the premium+ segment, as opposed to just 38% of new launches in regular, traditional trade. Take cars, for instance. Indians are no longer vying for a good old <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> 800 or <keyword id="20400567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alto" source="keywords">Alto</keyword>, traditionally known for their healthy mileage, but are rather happy investing in more swanky features that come along with high-end cars. In October 2024, India’s largest car manufacturer, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, sold 65,948 units of its compact cars like Swift, WagonR, Dzire, and more. Compared to the year-ago period, which saw sales of 80,662 units, this was an 18% dip. But take a look at their SUV (sport utility vehicle) sales for the same period. Cars like Brezza, Ertiga, and Grand Vitara sold about 70,644 units, a 19% uptick from the sales made in October 2023, i.e. 59,147 units. Simply put, when it comes to cars, Indians are saying the bigger, the better! The same is true for India's second biggest automobile manufacturer, Hyundai. Its SUV lineup made up a staggering 68.2% of the firm's total sales made for October 2024. What's more, SUV demand remained largely consistent across urban and rural markets. <h2>Consumers are inching up</h2>FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) are also riding the premiumization wave, with Indians prioritizing their health and wellness and not bothered about dishing out a few extra bucks for the same! You’ll find no dearth of words like organic, vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, peppered generously over every product you’ll see today, be it soaps, juices, or more. No wonder then, sales from premium segments in 2024 make up around 27% of all FMCG sales and even contribute a massive 42% to the sector’s value growth in India. Nielsen report further adds that luxury brands that position themselves at twice the price of their category’s average are even witnessing stellar growth. In fact, for most FMCG brands like Tata Consumer Products, <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL), Dabur, and Nestle, it is this premium segment that is growing much faster than their regular ones. And it's not just about daily-use products; Indians are also taking their celebrations a step over. Spirits manufacturer <keyword id="20125704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radico-khaitan" source="keywords">Radico Khaitan</keyword> highlighted that for the first half of 2024, their prestige &amp; above segment made for 88.4% of its net sales value. In the same period, the regular popular segment accounted for just 9.1% of their net sales. From Hindustan Unilever, which saw its premium products grow 30% over the last quarter, to <keyword id="20521971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="keywords">Kingfisher</keyword> beer's parent company, <keyword id="20124009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-breweries" source="keywords">United Breweries</keyword>, whose premium product sales volume jumped by 27% during the quarter as opposed to just a 5% rise in overall volumes, everyone is seemingly taking their lifestyle a notch above. Per the Nielsen report, in 2024, a typical global consumer spends about $13.7k per year. This is set to grow by around 2.4% to $14k as early as next year. Even a report by Goldman Sachs also highlighted a similar trend, noting that India’s affluent class, or those earning over $10,000 (Rs 8,42,694.97), is set to reach 100 million in the next 3 years. And where will this consumer spend? On premium products! <h2>Online shopping shifts from mass to class</h2>Amazon’s Great Indian Shopping Festival, which was live between September 27 and October 29 this year, saw 140 crore customers, more than 85% of whom came from non-metro Indian cities. On the site, there was a 400% spike in sales in premium sales across categories like watches, fragrances, handbags, jewelry, and more. Rival <keyword id="19896939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="keywords">Flipkart</keyword> noted a similar trend, recording 1.8x growth in premium beauty and personal care products during the first half of this year. <h2>Dialing in premiumness</h2>The Indian smartphone ecosystem has always been dominated by basic phones, or those entry- and mid-range phones that are priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000. But that has changed in recent times, with premium smartphones (i.e., those priced over Rs 60,000) registering 20%+ growth in 2024. During the first quarter of this year, sales of mass phones (priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000) reached 44%, compared to 51% in the year-ago period. But it's all sunny and shiny in the mid-premium (priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000) and super-premium segments (priced above Rs 60,000). Sales growth has burgeoned by as much as 27% and 86% in these categories, respectively. As India continues its march toward becoming the world's third-largest economy by 2027, the premium party is just getting started. Industry experts predict that premium segments will grow faster than you can say "sustainable organic handcrafted artisanal batch of coffee." So the next time you see someone dropping serious rupees on a fancy bottle of black water that also somehow plays music and tracks their hydration (yes, that's a thing), remember: This is just the trailer. Recycled wastewater tends to actually be cleaner than the water breweries can get on-site, multiple brewery owners told the Times. And their claim is backed up by environmental engineers. Last year, Stanford professor William Mitch <a href="https://engineering.stanford.edu/magazine/cleanest-drinking-water-recycled#:~:text=Mitch%20and%20his%20colleagues%20discovered,rivers%20across%20the%20United%20States.">published a study</a> showing that wastewater recycled using reverse osmosis resulted in a product as clean as groundwater, sometimes even more so. There is, of course, still a level of squeamishness among customers — though it helps that the taste of the recycled wastewater is no different than tap water, brewer Chris Garrett told the Times.Researchers are actively working to further refine the efficiency of water recycling technology. Just last month, NASA <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/news/water_recovery_milestone">reported</a> that scientists on the International Space Station had successfully recycled 98% of their wastewater for the first time.

"There are no changes to our forecasts as we await clarity on the timeline for penalty payment as well as the management’s eventual decision on whether to appeal against the penalty," it said in a Sep. 24 note. United Breweries, it said, had a cash of <a href="https://www.cci.gov.in/press-release"></a>₹470 crore (net cash of ₹354 crore) at the end of fiscal 2021. "As per our current forecasts, it may have a net cash to pay the penalty of ₹752 crore by the end of fiscal 2022 (assuming that is the timeline) or else it may have to raise debt. "The Delhi government has levied a Special Corona Fee -- 70 per cent of the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) -- on all categories of liquor from the consumer at the Point of Sale by the retail vend licensees for consumption off the premises, which will be further reimbursed to the Government," the order signed by Deputy Commissioner (Excise) said. The companies responsible for producing Heineken and Budweiser, respectively, believe that the market is Gujarat presents a unique opportunity for them to expand their portfolio. In fact, UB, already the largest beer maker in India, is testing the launch of its Kingfisher Radler non-alcoholic beer in the state. Ab InBev, on the other hand, has plans of entering the market next month. It’s unclear whether they’ll be launching Budweiser, Hoegaarden or Becks since all three lie in the low or non-alcoholic category. It’s not that Gujarat doesn’t have other alternatives, but they’re mostly imported and sold at exuberant prices. The potential of non-alcoholic beverages in India Gujarat isn’t the only state in India to have banned liquor within its borders. <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword>, Nagaland and the islands of Lakshadweep also don’t allow any alcohol to manufactured or sold in their states. And, it’s not just about exploiting the markets where alcohol isn’t available. Research shows that companies producing non-alcoholic beverages are also driven by the demand from teenagers. In lieu of being underage, the option of a namesake alcohol drink is enticing. It’s important to note that these beverages, while produced by alcohol brands, won’t be completing against alcoholic beverages, but other soft drinks in the market. Juice, carbonated drinks like Coke and Fanta, energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster as well as concentrated drinks showed a compound annual growth rate of 9.9% between 2012 to 2017. In comparison, the beer market only grew by 3%. Globally, the market for non-alcoholic beverages is expected to hit $25 billion by 2024, but in India, these beverages account for less than 1% of the beer market. Consumers may have to wait a while before Kingfisher Radler officially hits the market, but they’ll have the option to choose from lemon, ginger lime and mint lime flavours. All in all, this means there will finally be another option on the table aside from mixers and mocktails for non-alcohol drinkers at a party.

Even more was consumed during festivities and special occasions.</li></ul>Egyptians loved their beer. Not just for drinking, but for sacrificial rites. And now, new evidence shows that Egypt may also be home to the world’s oldest mass production <keyword id="6643600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brewery">brewery</keyword> in the world. Drink like an Egyptian: Historians discover the world’s oldest beer factory in Egypt

Beer also requires a <a href="https://www.brewersassociation.org/attachments/0001/1530/Sustainability_Energy_Manual.pdf">significant amount of heat</a> during the brewing process and refrigeration soon after it's made, contributing to energy waste - not to mention, the beer-making process produces plenty of <a href="https://academicjournals.org/journal/JBD/article-full-text-pdf/0E6313746212">wastewater and leftover grain</a>. Over the last six years, however, brewers have been leveraging sustainability tools created by the <a href="https://www.brewersassociation.org/">Brewers Association</a>, which represents around 5,400 small and independent member brewers - about half of the approximately 8,764 craft breweries in the United States.<div type="image" title="headshot of Chuck Skypeck holding beer on the steps" height="1201" width="1601" msid="86492861" hostid="261"></div>Brewers that used the tool for four or five years consistently reduced their carbon emissions and water consumption and also saved money, Chuck Skypeck, the BA's technical brewing projects manager, told Insider. Breweries that submitted five years of consecutive data showed a steady natural-resource efficiency improvement of 1% to 2% per year, he said.Horse &amp; Dragon Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado, is one of the breweries working with the BA to become more sustainable by using a benchmarking tool the BA developed to help breweries measure their energy and water use, carbon emissions, and costs for disposing of wastewater and used grains. "We're trying to chip away at this in small ways," Carol Cochran, co-owner of Horse &amp; Dragon and a member of the BA Sustainability Subcommittee, told Insider. Just the mere act of measuring usage is helping breweries to use less energy and resources, she said. Knowing your water usage per barrel of beer compared to a similarly sized brewery gives owners a starting point for change. "If you're way above, you can dig in and find out why or consult with other breweries in your size and area," she said.<h2>A sustainability challenge for smaller breweries</h2>For smaller breweries like Horse &amp; Dragon, which will produce less than 3,000 barrels of beer this year, it can be difficult to reach the level of sustainability that larger, more efficient breweries can achieve. <div type="image" title="headshot of Carol Cochran" height="703" width="937" msid="86492867" hostid="261"></div>For example, not every brewery can install large solar panels to offset energy use, Skypeck said. Smaller breweries like Horse &amp; Dragon, rather, typically focus on LED use or installing a more efficient compressor to reduce energy consumption. "About 7,500 of the BA members are brewing tiny amounts of beer on a shoestring," Cochran said. "We don't have the bandwidth to do the type of research the BA funds." BA membership also gives brewers like Cochran access to lessons learned by larger brewers such as New Belgium Brewing, also in Fort Collins, which brews more than 800,000 barrels of beer each year. New Belgium is an industry leader in sustainability, claiming its Fat Tire beer is the <a href="http://www.ismybeersustainable.com/">only certified carbon-neutral brew</a>.Larger brewers can capture emissions and reuse them to carbonate beer or during the canning or bottling process, but there aren't any systems designed yet for small-scale capture, and the technology that's available would require small brewers to use too much energy, Skypeck said. <div type="image" title="New Belgium Brewing" height="384" width="512" msid="86492869" hostid="261"></div>"We've learned that every brewery has individual challenges, and that if every brewer can start to measure what they're doing, they can identify where to make incremental changes," Skypeck said. He admitted that some of the BA's recommendations are simple, such as putting the brewery's lights on a timer to avoid using energy when no one's there or finding a local farm to take the brewery's used gain to use for composting and feeding livestock. But for brewers like Horse &amp; Dragon, those small incremental changes add up over time.<h2>Embracing water conservation</h2>With the BA's assistance, Horse &amp; Dragon has reduced its water usage by 36.46%, Cochran said. "Water is our primary focus right now, despite it being our least expensive one, simply because of the shortages we see and hear about in the West," Cochran said. "We're constantly looking for affordable ways to conserve, reuse, and bolster the health of our watershed." The US west is in a historic drought, and in August, the US government declared <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-declares-first-colorado-river-shortage-arizona-nevada-water-cuts-2021-8">a water shortage on the Colorado River</a>, impacting water supplies in Nevada and Arizona. The city of Fort Collins is even under a <a href="https://www.fcgov.com/utilities/water-restrictions">water-shortage watch</a>.Water is the main ingredient in beer, accounting for up to 95% of its content. In addition, water is used throughout the brewing process for cleaning, cooling, and packaging.Rather than just send water down the drain, the BA is teaching breweries to collect clean water and find other uses for it.When Cochran and her husband Tim were building the brewery, they consulted a larger BA member and were advised to buy an oversized hot liquor tank to capture and reuse all of the water used in the cooling process. That water travels through a heat exchanger to the hot liquor tank and is ready to be used when brewing the next batch or cleaning the tanks, she said. The brewery also collects clean water from a steam drip line on the hot liquor tank and uses it to water trees on the property.Skypeck also wants brewers to consider the quality of the water they use. The Fort Collins watershed has had two major forest fires, and when runoff hits the burn areas, it can affect the water quality, he said.Horse &amp; Dragon is a member of <a href="https://brewater.com/">BreWater</a>, 15 Fort Collins breweries focused on local water issues, including teaching the local community how to protect the local watershed.<h2>Reducing energy use beyond LED lights</h2>In addition to installing LED lights, Horse &amp; Dragon has been offsetting 100% of its energy usage since 2016 by purchasing wind power from <a href="https://www.arcadia.com/">Arcadia Power</a>. The brewery also reduced its energy footprint by committing to use locally sourced malt and barley, eliminating the need to truck supplies from other areas. Yet, despite these efforts, as the brewery's production has increased, so has its energy consumption. "Our average monthly energy usage has increased by 10%, and we're looking at additional ways to curb it for both the environmental bottom line and the financial one - it's the most expensive of our utilities," Cochran said.<h2>Buying local</h2>The goal is for all its beers to be made with 100% local ingredients, but Cochran admitted that it's a difficult financial calculation. While some sustainability efforts, such as using less water or generating less waste, save the brewery money, other efforts - like buying malt and barley from a local producer - cost 50% to 60% more than bulk grain from big suppliers."Unless every brewer is required to do the same, it is a hard financial decision to make," Cochran said. "We're still selling our product for a similar price as other breweries that aren't doing these things." Most brewers are reluctant to promote their sustainability efforts to consumers. "I think you run a risk of opening yourself up to legitimate criticism if you brag about the types of incremental changes you made," Cochran said.Make no mistake, Skypeck said, those small incremental changes are important. "The most sustainable way to consume a beer is in a glass that you're going to use and wash and use again," he said. In fact, he said, more than 65% of BA members don't package their beer; they just sell beer onsite at their taproom.

How the Brewers Association is helping independent breweries reduce their carbon footprint and cut costs

The decision came in the wake of an order by<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sebi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> SEBI,</a> saying Mallya cannot hold any directorship in any listed company. 
 <keyword id="81868" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="United-Breweries">United Breweries</keyword>' Company Secretary Govind Iyengar said that in the absence of any stay or vacation of the <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="sebi">Sebi</keyword> order, the "board is compelled to request you to step down from the board" with immediate effect. 
 "The independent directors along with other directors present at the meeting held on February 6, 2017 had resolved not to send the notices and agenda relating to board meetings and/or other privileged information to <keyword id="14678" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Mallya">Vijay Mallya</keyword> till such time he obtains stay of the Sebi order," the company added. 
 
SEBI has banned Mallya and six former officials of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=United+Spirits&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">United Spirits</a> Ltd (USL) from securities markets in a case related to illegal fund diversions.

United Breweries asks Vijay Mallya to quit as chairman over a SEBI order

Banks and the <keyword id="6357808" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enforcement-Directorate">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (<keyword id="12163" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ed">ED</keyword>) seem to be having a tiff over the right over the promoter shares of <keyword id="7229" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UB-Group">UB Group</keyword> companies that <keyword id="14678" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Mallya">Vijay Mallya</keyword> had pledged with banks. A few weeks back, ED officials had taken possession of the shares of some of these companies and other assets. They will soon move to get a confiscation order from the courts so that they can take over the shares. However, as per banks, it’s not that simple. "We hold the first right on pledged shares as a charge was created while disbursing loans to Mallya and his companies," said one banker requesting anonymity. "ED may dispose of other assets where there is no charge, but selling shares and assets pledged to us is not possible." As per another banker, since banks hold prior right on all pledged assets, ED cannot confiscate such a property. "Also, we are waiting for the extradition proceedings to get completed; recovery will speed up if Mallya is brought back." The tiff might go for long and can also prove to be worrisome for Dutch brewer <keyword id="81732" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Heineken">Heineken</keyword>'s plans to take majority ownership in <keyword id="81868" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="United-Breweries">United Breweries</keyword>, of which has Mallya is a joint owner with a 30% stake. This stake is among the assets that ED possesses. ED, however, has a possible upper hand in the form of an option. As per experts, if the agency proves to the court that money was laundered by Mallya and his companies and this laundered money was used to create these assets, then the ownership will have to be transferred to the government. Why is high rate of GST horrifying? “High GST is going to seriously hurt the hospitality business because international tourists will prefer Southeast Asian destinations because of the increase in tax from the current level. India as a destination will further face challenges from inbound tourists from its neighbouring ASEAN countries. When it comes to the competition with our Asian counterparts such as Japan and Singapore where the tax is much lesser, there will be a dropdown in inbound business which will affect the economy of the country,” feels V. Jaiswal, Senior VP – Sales &amp; Marketing, Sarovar Hotels &amp; Resorts. What goes in the disadvantage of the customers is most eateries will charge 12% even if they are small just to save themselves from taxmen’s red eyes. “We continue to lose to our competitors in the international market due to these activities. Unfortunately the situation does not get any better. In any case we have infrastructural issues in the country and as you know India is a far off destination and so on and so forth.
