UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed senior UN official <keyword id="251474" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Siddharth-Chatterjee">Siddharth Chatterjee</keyword> of India as <keyword id="10440639" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-united-nations-resident-coordinator">the United Nations Resident Coordinator</keyword> in China. Resident Coordinators are the UN Secretary-General's representatives for development at the country level. They lead UN teams supporting countries to recover better from the COVID-19 pandemic through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Guterres appointed Chatterjee as the Resident Coordinator in China, with the host government's approval. Chatterjee's "appointment follows confirmation from the Host Government, where he will take up his post in the middle of January of next year," Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday as he made the announcement. "We congratulate our friend Siddharth," Dujarric said. "We proudly remain with full gender parity and North-South balance among all of our Resident Coordinators, who cover 162 countries and territories," he said. Chatterjee has more than 25 years of experience in international cooperation, sustainable development, humanitarian coordination and peace and security, which he has acquired at the United Nations and externally, the <keyword id="2335615" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Organisation">world organisation</keyword> said in a statement. Most recently, Chatterjee served as United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya, after holding other leadership positions across the organisation, including Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Kenya, Regional Director for the Middle East and Europe for the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Denmark and Chief of Staff in <keyword id="10440640" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-united-nations-assistance-mission">the United Nations Assistance Mission</keyword> for Iraq (UNAMI). He also held leadership positions with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Indonesia, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan, and in United Nations peacekeeping operations with <keyword id="9290663" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-united-nations-mission">the United Nations Mission</keyword> in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH). Before joining the United Nations in 1997, he was a commissioned officer in India's Army. Bhubaneswar, May 9 () The Odisha government hastrained 1.72 lakh health personnel to fight COVID-19 in thestate, where a spike in the number of positive cases wasrecently witnessed following the return of Odia migrantworkers from other parts of the country, a senior officialsaid.The state government has trained 1,72,499 healthpersonnel to deal with the novel coronavirus outbreak, ChiefSecretary A K Tripathy said while launching the 'COVID-19workforce portal' here on Friday.Altogether 129 fresh novel coronavirus cases werereported in the state since May 3, when the return of thestranded migrant workers began. Of these, around 114 COVID-19patients are returnees who were stranded in Gujarat, a healthofficial said.A total of 8,023 doctors, 8,296 staff nurses, 4,105paramedical staff and laboratory technicians, 4,114 AYUSHdoctors, 4,905 ambulance drivers, 1,35,820 ANM/ASHA/AWWworkers and 7,236 sanitation workers have been drafted intothe COVID-19 workforce, Labour and ESI Secretary Anu Gargsaid.Also, 108 doctors, 64 staff nurses and 61 pharmacistsfrom ESI and private sector hospitals have been trained inCOVID-19 management, she said.Health and Family Welfare Secretary N B Dhal said that8,325 MBBS, AYUSH and nursing students, who had volunteeredfor COVID-19 duty, have been trained in providing care to thepatients.Garg, also the chairperson of HR and capacity-buildingcommittee for COVID-19, said 33,900 functionaries of temporarymedical camps set up in different panchayat areas for thereturning stranded migrants have been trained in health,nutrition, water and sanitation management in the facilities.The people in charge of the temporary camps have alsobeen trained in providing care to children and women andtraumatised returnees, she said.Around 753 counsellors have been trained to providepsycho-social support to the patients and their families, theofficial said.The Odisha Disaster Management Authority, incoordination with the UNFPA and the UNICEF, has also trained2,471 volunteers to provide assistance in COVID-19 management,she said."The training has instilled confidence among thedoctors, paramedical personnel and support staff. Today is World’s Population Day and everyone around the world is pouring their wisdom and intellect in how we can control population and what are the reasons behind the surge. 
 This <keyword id="203146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Population-Day">World Population Day</keyword>’s theme is-‘Investing in Teenage Girls’, which is subject of grave concern. 
 
World over, teenage girls face a number of challenges such as early marriage and motherhood. Many teenage girls are forced to drop out of schools and are marginalised. 
 
To bring these challenges to zilch, UNFPA has been running a series of programmes that aim to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives. 
 
In 2015 alone, UNFPA programmes helped 11.2 million girls between ages 10 and 19 gain access to sexual and reproductive health services and information.

seems to know the real reason behind India’s population-control issues

Africa has the world's highest rate of intimate partner/family-related homicide, a crime with a disproportionately high number of female victims, a <a href="https://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/statistics/GSH2013/2014_GLOBAL_HOMICIDE_BOOK_web.pdf">new United Nations report</a> has found.
In Africa, there were 1.7 victims of domestic violence homicides per 100,000 people compared to a global rate of .9. The continent also has the highest female murder rate - 6 victims per 100,000 people, compared to a global rate of 2.7 - but it also has a higher murder rate overall than everywhere except the Americas.
The UN publication African Renewal has observed that in some ways violence against women in Africa is <a href="http://www.un.org/africarenewal/magazine/special-edition-women-2012/taking-violence-against-women-africa">"rooted" in the culture there</a>. From that article:
In a report by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in 2000, the agency noted that in interviews in Africa and Asia, 'the right of a husband to beat or physically intimidate his wife' came out as 'a deeply held conviction.' Even societies where women appear to enjoy better status 'condone or at least tolerate a certain amount of violence against women.'
Africa's economic decline over the past three decades has left many women in worse conditions. Their plight is so severe, noted a study by the WHO and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), that many women see no option but to remain with husbands who routinely batter them. The women stay because men 'serve as vital opportunities for financial and social security, or for satisfying material aspirations.'
The problem of violence against women appears to be particularly acute in South Africa, where the female homicide rate of 12.9 per 100,000 women is five times higher than the global rate. In that country, intimate partner homicides make up 57% of female murders.
Violence against women in South Africa has gotten more attention recently because of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Pistorius">Oscar Pistorius</a> murder trial. Pistorius, a famous Olympian who's a double amputee, is accused of being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/texts-between-oscar-pistorius-and-reeva-steenkamp-2014-3">a jealous and critical boyfriend</a> who shot his new girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in cold blood.
Pistorius has talked about how he was <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/pistorius-trial/oscar-pistorius-murder-trial-i-was-besotted-reeva-n74396">"besotted" with Steenkamp</a>, but The New Yorker's Amy Davidson<a href="http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/closeread/2014/03/oscar-pistoriuss-gun-and-tears.html"> has pointed out</a>, "A man who tells a woman he loves her - who does, in fact, love her - can kill her, too."
