<ul><li><keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword>, India’s richest man, has pledged to donate ₹60,000 crore towards charity. </li><li>The charitable efforts will be under the trusteeship of the <keyword id="2542614" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-foundation" source="Orion">Adani Foundation</keyword>, and the group says it will enlist sectoral experts to take its efforts forward. </li><li><keyword id="6419840" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="azim-premji" source="Orion">Azim Premji</keyword>, one of the most philanthropic persons in India, praised <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> for his efforts. </li></ul>Gautam Adani, the richest Indian man, has pledged ₹60,000 crore towards charity. That’s a tenth of his total net worth. This pledge was made on Adani’s 60th birthday, and will be used for a range of social causes. The group said that the corpus will be used towards healthcare, education and skill development – all of which are tax-deductible. The Adani Foundation will be holding this corpus as a trustee, and is likely to be partly funded by transferring the stake of promoters in the seven listed companies of the Adani group. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Forbes, Gautam Adani’s networth is around $93-95 billion. Adani received praise from Azim Premji, the founder chairman of Wipro and the Czar of Indian IT. A noted philanthropist himself, Premji praised Adani for pledging his wealth at the “peak of business success”, pointing at the substantial contribution to charity by the Adani group. “The challenges and possibilities of our country demand that we work together as one, cutting across all divides of wealth, region, religion, caste, and more. I wish Gautam Adani and his Foundation the very best in this important national endeavour,” Premji added. Philanthropy is an effort to help and support social welfare causes by way of donations – in money and kind. Gautam Adani gives a tenth of his networth to charity, Azim Premji is impressed

<ul><li>Founded in 2016, <keyword id="3270416" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="haqdarshak" source="Orion">Haqdarshak</keyword> is a mobile and web platform connecting citizens to eligible government welfare schemes. </li><li>In six years, Haqdarshak claims to have aided the disbursal of over ₹5,000 crore, serving nearly 25 lakh customers and 50,000 micro-businesses. </li><li>Haqdarshak received a joint offer of ₹1 crore for 2% equity from judges Namita Thapar, Aman Gupta and <keyword id="824423" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="peyush-bansal" source="Orion">Peyush Bansal</keyword>. </li></ul>The Indian government has many social benefit schemes for the underprivileged. However, a vast section of the intended beneficiaries are unaware of such schemes, and a majority of those who are aware are unable to access them due to roadblocks like lack of documentation and an inability to submit the documents. Moreover, many such beneficiaries of pension schemes, scholarship schemes, health insurance and others reside in remote areas of this vast country. Bringing them into the fold by aiding people with Aadhar cards; micro SMEs with Udyog Aadhar; easing access to widow pension and more are the pain points that a startup, Haqdarshak, wants to solve. It made its pitch on <keyword id="13768438" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-india-season-2" source="Orion">Shark Tank India Season 2</keyword> this week. In 2016, Aniket Doegar, who has ample exposure to rural <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> via his work and interests, started Haqdarshak in Pune. It has <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/haqdarshak/">positioned </a>itself as a “next-gen, for-profit startup focused on social impact” and has a mobile and web platform. It <a href="https://www.sonyliv.com/shows/shark-tank-india-1700000741/determined-entrepreneurs-1000203893?watch=true">claims </a>to have served over 25 lakh customers and 50,000 micro-businesses and trained 25,000 agents. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Commission-based revenue model" comment="subhead2" text="Commission-based revenue model">Commission-based revenue model</cmsannotation> Haqdarshak trains its agents to provide what it calls ‘last-mile’ assistance. Agents organise community gatherings or go door-to-door to educate people about the available schemes. They also assist them in availing the schemes. An agent registers a family or individual on the Haqdarshak app and gathers information regarding their housing conditions, income, religion, caste, etc. Once the questions (40-45) are answered, the app shares the number of eligible welfare schemes. As per Doegar, the average number of schemes available to beneficiaries in rural India are between 50-55, while in urban India that number falls to 35-40. A customer is charged a nominal amount of ₹50 rupees (without GST) as a service charge, which is split between the agent and the company. An agent earns anywhere between ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 per month. “In 2020-2021, multiple investors told us to turn the company into a fintech or edtech company, offering educational schemes or loans. But our goal is to become India’s biggest social security company in the next 10 years. Today, if Jyoti (one of the agents) goes to the community, they know she’s providing them with something. This will change if she starts asking for money (for loans, etc.),” shared Doegar on the show. In six years, Doegar claimed that Haqdarshak aided the disbursal of ₹5,000 crore to the beneficiaries via social schemes. In May 2016, the startup raised ₹1.25 crore from angel investors at a valuation of ₹10 crore, and in May 2021, it <a href="https://yourstory.com/2021/05/funding-alert-social-enterprise-startup-haqdarshak-pre-series-a-round">raised</a> ₹6.65 crore in a pre-Series A round. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="‘Social impact and sales is a rare feat’" comment="subhead2" text="‘Social impact and sales is a rare feat’">‘Social impact and sales is a rare feat’</cmsannotation> Impressed by his clarity, product, and vision, Lenskart co-founder Peyush Bansal made the first offer — ₹1 crore for 2% equity, which valued the company at ₹50 crore. Emcure Pharmaceuticals’ ED Namita Thapar and boAt’s co-founder Aman Gupta made a joint offer of ₹50 lakh for 1% equity; and ₹50 lakh debt at an interest rate of 10%, at the same valuation. The founder sought a collective investment of ₹1 crore from all three sharks for 0.5% equity, each. The sharks clarified that they wouldn’t budge from the equity share of 2%. Ultimately, the deal was finalised for ₹1 crore, from the three sharks, for a total of 2% equity. While congratulating him, Thapar commented that it was rare for (social) impact and sales to come together like it has for Haqdarshak. The startup generated revenue of ₹15.5 crore in FY22 but suffered a loss for the first time ever since inception as Covid forced them to shut operations for four months. After completing graduation in 2010, he worked at the grassroots level for nearly five years at various government schools in rural Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan and other states. He was also a Teach for India fellow from June 2010 to April 2012. He soon realised that there was a lack of awareness about government welfare schemes. “When people like you and me go to passport or visa centres, we’re greeted with folded hands, with people saying, ‘Sir, your appointment is next.’ When a poor person visits the pension officer, he has to beg for the pension he is entitled to. Can we change this user behaviour?” remarked Doegar on the show. The startup claims to have digitised close to 7,500 government schemes on its platform. It provides assistance across multiple schemes, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/haqdarshak/?hl=en">including </a>the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – which provides clean cooking alternatives like Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections to BPL households; and Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana – UP government’s scheme to encourage self-employment among the state’s artisans. Apart from people, it also works with corporates to enroll their factory employees into government schemes. As of 2022, the startup has worked with 110 corporates representing nearly 10 million of their employees – and corporates are charged higher than individuals. The latest offering by Haqdarshak is a QR-code-based “Yojana Card” that allows customers to check various government schemes and ask for application support from Haqdarshak, if needed. A customer can scan the QR code through a smartphone. In the absence of a smartphone, the customer can reach any Hadardshak centre and scan the card. However, a systemic practice of oppression through caste discrimination has been followed in our country for a very long time. Rugs and woven carpets are made by local artisans in rural India, who often do not get their due credit or even the right remuneration for their art and work. Jaipur Rug, a handwoven carpet brand, was founded by Nand Kishore Chaudhary at a time when the practices of the Indian caste system were extremely rigid and upper-class men working with Dalit women was frowned upon (openly). He was on a mission to help rural and tribal women become independent and get recognised for their talent. He started his business with two looms and nine artisans. It is now a social business that connects rural craftsmanship with global markets. He has impacted the lives of 40,000 rural artisans spread across villages in North and West India. Over 80% of the artisans are women and about 7,000 tribals. He successfully built a profitable business by exporting handmade carpets by these artisans and its biggest market today is the US. <div type="image" title="JAIPUR_RUGS_Artisants_AW8I3784" msid="82178763" hostid="261"></div> Sharing how it all started, Yogesh Chaudhary, Director of Jaipur Rugs said, “ Back then, the practices of the Indian caste system were rigid, and the weaving community was considered ‘untouchable.’ Nand Kishore Chaudhar had to work against the system to realise his dream. His family frowned, while he enjoyed working with the weavers and sharing daily meals with them. Through his effortless connection with the rural communities, he quickly gained trust and began bringing livelihood opportunities to more and more underprivileged households. In a few years, he moved to Gujarat and spent nine years training more than 2500 people from the tribal community. Today, the modern and eclectic collection of rugs are retailed across three stores in India and exported to more than 65 countries.” Jaipur Rugs clocked an export revenue of about ₹5 crore in the first year of its operations. Jaipur Rugs has earmarked Rs 4.5 crore for marketing this year. It would spend most of its marketing monnies on digital media. “We are bullish because Covid has led to an increase in homeownership and renovations. People are spending a lot more time at home and they want it to reflect their personality and positivity. We plan to spend a lot of it on social media and several digital and physical exhibitions and events. We have a number of unique collaborations in the coming year,” said Chaudhary. According to IBEF, India is responsible for around 40% of worldwide export of handmade carpets. Export of carpets from India stood at US$ 1.37 billion in FY20, while that of handicrafts excluding handmade carpets reached US$ 1.79 billion during the same period. The total carpet export was $ 893.99 million between April and November 2020 and for handicrafts excluding handmade carpets, it was US$ 989.92 million. The Indian carpets and rugs market is highly competitive and fragmented in nature. There are over 2000 manufacturers present in the market. On what helps Jaipur Rugs stand out in this huge market, Chaudhary said, “We have a powerful story as a brand. In addition to that, we also offer the largest variety in terms of designs and price points to our clientele making it convenient for them to shop at one place.” This year, it would focus on digital marketing and opening a physical store in Bengaluru and an experience centre in Jaipur. Based on this strong marketing and expansion plan, the company is aiming to grow by 15%. “We are looking at a growth of about 15% for FY22. We retail out of four stores in Jaipur, Delhi and Mumbai and have a significant digital audience. We are looking to expand both physically and digitally to take our existing audience base up by 10X. Apart from that, our focus this year is to do a lot of internal improvements in the business. We are taking a hard look at the underlying philosophy of your business and not just its mechanics. There is a clear purpose that our business has. A gap in the market that we fill. We are focusing on that to make informed changes for the next phase of growth,” said Chaudhary.

Directed by <keyword id="13544195" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kenny-ortega" source="Orion">Kenny Ortega</keyword>, the <a href="https://www.insider.com/newsies-cast-then-now-2018-8">Disney movie musical about the newsboys' strike of 1899</a> starred a young <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-best-and-worst-christian-bale-movies-2020-1">Christian Bale</a> as the suave strike leader Jack Kelly and David Moscow as Davey, the brains behind the operation.Complete with thick New York accents and original music by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, the 1992 film follows singing and dancing newsboys on their way to unionize against newspaper mogul Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World.Ahead of the 30th anniversary of the film, Insider spoke with some of the leading cast members and production staff about what it was like to work on then-Walt <keyword id="46161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="disney" source="Orion">Disney</keyword> Studios Chair Jeffrey Katzenberg's "pet project," which he thought would revolutionize the live-action-musical genre.But the real history the movie made was as one of Disney's greatest failures with a surprisingly rich legacy.<h2>From the start, 'Newsies' was an uphill battle with a slew of problems</h2>"Newsies" didn't start out as a musical. It was adapted from Bob Tzudiker and Noni White's dramatic screenplay inspired by the real-life newsboys strike of 1899. It wasn't supposed to be a musical until Ortega entered the project."This was their big hope that musicals were going to come back," Moscow said. Then, Ortega got to work casting two talented lead actors — Bale and Moscow — and a host of young hopefuls.But Bale and Moscow weren't trained singers or dancers. Moscow said he was terrified to take on a leading role in a musical."They had to calm both me and Christian down, like, 'Look, we're never going to make you look bad. We have so much rehearsal time,'" Moscow said. "They brought in Madonna's voice coach for us. So Menken tapped Feldman, a colleague he'd met at a musical-theater workshop.Ashman died the day before the first songwriting session for "Newsies." Menken flew out to Los Angeles to write a track, flew back home for Ashman's funeral, and headed back to work.Along with their grief, the duo were challenged with creating songs for a live-action musical, which wasn't much of a thing in the 1990s, when animated musicals reigned supreme."Break-into-song musical movies were not fashionable at that time," Feldman said. "They were prior, and they became so again, but at that time it was an anomaly."The songwriters were under a time crunch, and there was little opportunity for revision.Unlike stage musicals, you can't keep changing and fixing, Feldman said. Everything had to be prerecorded. Bale's character wasn't made to look disheveled until a few days into filming, so he suddenly looks polished without explanation halfway through the movie. Arvie Lowe Jr., who played the newsie Boots, has a modern-day watch clearly visible in one crucial scene, a close-up of his hand ringing a bell.But with Ortega at the helm, "Newsies" pushed along, and the set was filled with energy — pranks and water-gun fights were plentiful around Universal Studios (bonus points if you hit a Disney exec or Ortega), and the cast went to Disneyland during breaks.Mickey and Minnie Mouse even visited the set, reminding the cast that this was a Disney film and the stakes were high. Lowe, who was 12 when the movie was filmed, said it was one of his "most fond memories."He said he remembered thinking they had to make sure to "get Minnie and Mickey some cash" by doing a good job on the movie.But Marty Belafsky, who played the newsie Crutchy, recalled thinking the visit was "kind of weird.""I obviously knew we were shooting a Disney movie, but I'm like, 'What? What is the point of this? What, am I supposed to be excited that I'm meeting two people in a Minnie and Mickey outfit?'"Belafsky was more enamored by Katzenberg showing up at rehearsals. "He had these three tall, like, almost bodyguard guys with him, but I was just like, 'Oh, my God, he is the most powerful guy at Disney. That is so cool. So when he came on the set, we sort of knew that we were a big deal like that," he told Insider. "The movie was a big deal for Disney if this was a Katzenberg pet project." "It wouldn't be a cult classic if it did really well."For Moscow, the movie's failure didn't change anything about the "magical experience." And he still thinks it's "wild" that Disney released such a "progressive story about unionizing." "It was really cool that they got involved and allowed us to create something fun."<h2>Coronavirus masks helped keep the duo from laughing</h2>Pieters and Manners always like to give the people on the receiving end of their pranks a fair chance, partly so they don't get in too much trouble, and also so they know it's all in good faith.For this video, the casting company was registered to Pieters, and the scripts were not said to have been written by Baron Cohen."Even down to, if you look at the video, we look ridiculous," Manners said. "We're sitting there wearing face masks, on Zoom, the whole premise is just moronic. There's quite a lot of it that is so farcical, that even though Borat himself is ridiculous, you kind of can't believe that they're going along with this."The fact COVID-19 is still prevalent across the world also worked in the YouTube duo's favor, as wearing masks during the video calls helped them conceal their expressions and keep their identities somewhat hidden."Trying not to laugh is really really hard," Manners said. We speak to experts to find out. </li></ul>Advertising in India has come a long way when it comes to representation of women. From a time when women were only portrayed as home-makers taking care of everybody, today ads talk about a larger role that they play in the world. However, we realised something. Very few ads show women eating, which as an activity is such a normal, everyday thing. But we've rarely seen women do that in ads. It is usually they who cook, feed others or wait until after dinner to feed themselves from what is left. Women are shown as caretakers, nourishers or givers, very rarely do they prioritize themselves in real life or pop culture. Dutch State Mines’ CSR initiative Project Streedhan has exhorted women to give their nutrition and themselves equal importance by investing in iron-rich food. The first phase of advertisement released in 2019 aimed at raising awareness about iron deficiency in women's bodies that causes. It portrayed uninhibited women consuming food -- with no filters or worrying about ‘what will people think.’ It encouraged women to celebrate their femininity and eat like nobody's watching, becoming the revolutionary campaign women needed that urged them not to neglect their health behind their husband, kids or desk. The project by DSM India also reminded people that women need to be healthy to be financially independent, it changed the definition of what Streedhan meant. This time, the Streedhan campaign seeks to drive home a similar message -- that our health is our real wealth at all times, and that we need to nurture our immunity by feeding it, building it, and protecting it. The ad tells them to be their own bodyguard by filling up the vault of their health. The advertisement is aesthetically pleasing and the catchy song stays with you. Every frame seems like painting. However, for an advertisement that aims to raise awareness about anemic women or celebrate women at leisure and empower them, it first comes across as an ad for a clothing, beauty or juice brand. It features women of one kind, with one body type, shape and age, which are otherwise seen as ‘ideal’ bodies of ‘desirable’ age. It aims to be rustic but ends up painting a picture that is flawlessly beautiful. It lacks representation of different kinds of women. While the message is about women empowerment and finding the right nourishment, it uses beauty standards to send it across. Women seem to eat in an erotic way perched up on a branch but it is sexualised, appears pleasurable and not about feeding or taking care of themselves. Since its aim is to celebrate femininity, women’s health and reach out to women in every nook of our country, be it urban or rural, will women resonate with it? Or does it feel like an advertisement made from the male gaze? Does it fall into the trap it is trying to escape from? We reached out to a few experts from our industry to see what they feel. “I am appalled by the sexual overtones. I have no idea what this communication piece is trying to say and to whom,” said Ashwini Deshpande, Co-founder and Director, Elephant Design. Disha Daswani, Creative Director, Schbang, said, "They have achieved cinematic brilliance and even composed a song that one can’t get out of their heads, I mean who wouldn’t want to hear Sona Mohapatra’s voice on repeat? The concept of showing real women, with real problems is completely lost. Yes, we all wished we looked as gorgeous as that, wrapped in a silk saree and glowing amidst vast fields, sucking on a fruit. But sadly no. People with low immunity and anemia (speaking from experience) wake up pale, have noticeable dark circles that prompt questions like ‘hey you look tired today.’ Also, what’s up with casting only slim women who fit the wardrobe well and the excessive lip biting? The concept of Anaemia and low immunity has been romanticized, and not nearly as accurate of how women with this sickness look/feel. You could call it creative liberty or just sheer ignorance?" Alpa Dedhia, Business Director, VMLY&amp;R INDIA felt that the visuals divert attention away from the core message. She said, “Titillating tone of the ad loses the message of women's health for me. There is more to women than just being objectified. The issue about lack of vitamins is an important one and nowhere in the ad is there any serious attempt to address it. A woman is the one who cares for everyone and in the process of doing so; she neglects herself… This is a sacrifice that needs to be addressed and not just girls swinging and dancing around trees.” Pallavi Chakravarti, Executive Creative Director, <keyword id="212000" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taproot">Taproot</keyword> Dentsu, found the ad ineffective. She said, "The depiction of women was unnecessarily sensual for a subject like immunity building – the execution didn’t connect to the problem at hand at all – at least for me. She explained, "Especially for the cause it represents, promoting, health and well-being should have been prioritized over the sexual overtone, the video has sexualised women for sure. The fact that immunity is a need for underprivileged, and malnourished is completely overlooked. We also see a certain kind of women being chosen for the ad which is disappointing as this was a great platform to be inclusive of different kinds of women who struggle with immunity." FCB Ulka’s idea behind this advertisement was to celebrate women’s lust for life. Explaining the thought process behind selecting professional models and following beauty standards, FCB Ulka Advertising’s spokesperson said, “There are many narratives that have restricted the idea of womanhood and women’s empowerment – so it is but natural that we may see things at times from different perspectives. With project Streedhan, we wanted to break a fundamental narrative that has restricted women’s empowerment. The idea that women are the nourisher, and therefore de-prioritise their own nourishment. They are expected to eat least and last. Prioritizing their own health and enjoyment is seen as selfish and taboo. With project Streedhan, we celebrate a woman’s lust for life. It is not about sexualizing them as objects of desire, but acknowledging them as whole beings, sexual, woman and above all human. The project gives women ‘permission’ without preaching to them, to enjoy unabashedly their food, to unleash their lust for life. This struck a deep chord with women everywhere as the virality of the first project showed.” “Having different body sizes would indeed be inclusive – however as we were creating a new narrative where women are free to enjoy their food without guilt, we didn’t want body sizes to hijack the messages with more misogynistic “greedy/ selfish’’ narrative. In the future, we will explore how we can drive inclusivity while keeping the narrative intact," said the agency spokesperson. Karthik Srinivasan, Brand Communications and Social Media Expert, had reviewed Streedhan’s first advertisement and appreciated it for its timing, technique, aesthetics and narrative device. However, he posed a few questions that advertisement did not answer the last time and hasn’t this time as well. He wrote, “The film showcases glamorous looking women eating a lot of colourful food and fruits, including corn, watermelon, pomegranate and so on. The text—and the song—exhorts women to eat more iron. Is the implication that they should eat more of what is being shown in the film (those foods that contain iron, presumably)? Wouldn’t it be more useful to showcase a list of kinds of food women should consume instead of just making it seem like the way Katrina Kaif consumes mangoes in the Slice ad? But it doesn’t seem to be doing justice to the problem (and its gravity) it is trying to address.”

But they stepped things up a gear with the third video, which will air on Sunday night."Here's a chance where we could perhaps interview some high level talent because we are going under the guise of being a really famous show," Pieters told Insider. "And we thought, why don't we take a shot in the dark and go for the most exclusive, hard to reach person in the world, with absolutely no hope of it working?"They sent Carole Baskin an email from their trusty fake-but-also-real production company Invisible Objects, saying they were producing the live segments for "<keyword id="2835699" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Tonight-Show-Starring-Jimmy-Fallon">The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon</keyword>."They'd almost forgotten about it when she finally replied and agreed to the call.<div type="image" title="archie carole" height="1080" width="1440" msid="75520730" hostid="261"></div><h2>Becoming Jimmy Fallon</h2>Pieters and Manners are a duo who have become well known and respected on YouTube for their social experiments. The strange times we are living through certainly helped."I wouldn't say it's thanks to lockdown," Pieters said. "It was just really interesting seeing people like Prince William and all these people you'd never imagined to see on Zoom, and Zoom becoming such a big thing."Video calls are being used by talk shows all over the world right now, and there's no real set way to do them. So as long as Manners put on a confident enough performance, there's no reason to doubt Fallon or Corden were listening in too."I think it's also very hard when you are live on an interview with who you think is James Corden or Jimmy Fallon, to go, 'Hold on a second, that's not Jimmy Fallon,' when it sounds like him," Pieters told Insider."You'd have to be pretty sure of yourself and pretty brave to stop the interview."<h2>A worldwide exclusive</h2>The interviews all went more smoothly than expected. Pieters said he'd been having nightmares of being really stuck and having nothing to say with the few clips in front of him, because it's so hard imagining the direction the interview will go beforehand."There is often a moment where there isn't a clip that's suitable," he said. "But that's luckily where I have Archie on standby who can come in and act as the producer and say, 'Oh we've got a quick change there, Jimmy's just doing this,' or 'Jimmy's just doing his makeup,' and then it sort of explains why something sort of went wrong."The way they prepared for Baskin's interview was by scouring Fallon's older videos for relevant sound bites."As you'll see in the video, Jimmy Fallon has interviewed people named Cat, he's interviewed the cast of 'Cats,' and he's actually interviewed a real cat," Pieters said."So we had quite a lot of options for using the word cat. We tried our best to make it work with that."The end result was the first major interview Baskin has given since "Tiger King" aired."I think she did an interview for a local paper in Tampa where she's from," Pieters said. "But this was her first worldwide exclusive interview, which is just quite something."<div type="image" title="carole baskin" height="1080" width="1440" msid="75520733" hostid="261"></div><h2>'We really did not expect it to work'</h2>Pieters and Manners try to answer the "questions you didn't know you had."They never try to completely trick anyone, because ultimately, lying and deceiving is a lot less interesting than what they actually pull off."I think we always we always try to, not only from a creative point of view, but also from a slightly moral point of view, not completely dupe someone by breaking the law or doing something really wrong," Pieters said in a previous interview."We always try to give people a bit of a chance."Pieters said their latest series was simply seeing whether playing recordings to someone could convincingly pose as a real interview."Like all of our ideas, we really didn't expect it to work, and then it did work," he said. "I guess it's that trying to run an experiment and see if it works with not much hope of it working," he said. "And then when it does work, it's always quite fun to watch."Baskin is a "very interesting lady," Pieters said, and is excited to share the interview with the world."We really did not expect it to work," he said. Or is the mantra still helpful to women in the workplace?</div></div></div><ul><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/facebook" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a>'s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/sheryl-sandberg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sheryl Sandberg</a> famously advocated for women to take charge in the workplace in her 2013 book "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/lean-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lean In</a>."</li><li>Recently, a group of Duke University psychology professors conducted <a href="https://hbr.org/2018/07/lean-in-messages-and-the-illusion-of-control%27Lean" target="_blank" rel="noopener">studies</a> centering on the idea of women "leaning in" at work.</li><li>They found that, while advising women to "lean in" can empower individuals, the concept can have a subtle but troubling side effect.</li><li>Touting an individual's professional success as the solution to workplace inequality, as opposed to advocating for widespread policy change, puts the onus of achieving gender equality exclusively on women.</li><li>The concept of "leaning in," therefore, can function as a distraction from the macro-level issues of workplace discrimination and exclusionary office policies and promotion practices.</li></ul> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/facebook" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a>'s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/sheryl-sandberg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sheryl Sandberg</a> changed the whole conversation around women in the workplace with just two words: "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/lean-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lean in</a>."The Facebook COO's famous 2013 <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Lean-Women-Work-Will-Lead/dp/0385349947/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1533573540&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=lean+in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">book</a> encouraged women to hone their negotiation tactics, strive to fill leadership roles at work, and tackle their professional lives full-throttle. The idea was that, by super-charging their own <keyword id="6354910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="careers">careers</keyword>, women could collectively overcome the gender gap in the office.<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2013/03/what-lean-in-misunderstands-about-gender-differences/274138/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sandberg's </a>message <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-women-arent-getting-more-c-suite-jobs-2014-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attracted</a> controversy <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/121249/sheryl-sandbergs-lean-feminism-puts-women-issues-risk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">from</a> the <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/vanessa-garcia/why-i-wont-lean-in_b_3586527.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">get-go</a>. The Facebook exec addressed the criticism that her book left out underprivileged women back in 2016, telling <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/facebook-sheryl-sandberg-parts-of-lean-in-are-wrong/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS</a> that, "I did not really get how hard it is to succeed at work when you are overwhelmed at home."But an upcoming report set to be published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology may cast doubts upon whether or not telling women to "lean in" is a good idea at all.<h2>A series of studies suggests advice to 'lean in' is distracting, at best</h2>The group of Duke University psychology professors summarized their recent findings in <a href="https://hbr.org/2018/07/lean-in-messages-and-the-illusion-of-control%27Lean" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harvard Business Review</a>. During a series of six studies involving 2,000 participants, the researchers sought to compare the effect of encouraging women to adopt the individualistic, "DIY" approach espoused by the "lean in" movement and the effect of highlighting the structural and systemic disadvantages that women face in the workplace.For the study, participants all read excerpts from "Lean In" and listened to portions of Sandberg's TED talks. One group consumed messages from Sandberg suggesting that women should be more confident and less risk-averse in the office. The other group's excerpts from the Facebook COO's work highlighted the "structural and societal factors" that held women back at work.Participants who read "lean in"-oriented messages from the book- as opposed to the excerpts indicating a need for broader policy shifts - were more likely to feel that women ought to solve the problem of workplace inequality themselves. The research team wrote in the <a href="https://hbr.org/2018/07/lean-in-messages-and-the-illusion-of-control%27Lean" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harvard Business Review</a> that, on the positive side, participants exposed to the "DIY" themed excerpts expressed a belief that women have the power to clobber workplace inequality, but added that these participants "were also more likely to believe that women are responsible for the problem - both for causing it, and for fixing it."The group of participants who read "lean in" messaging also were less likely to support implementing structural changes to help women better succeed in the workplace.Essentially, the mantra of "lean in" is a distraction at best, and subtle, pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps victim-blaming at worst, according to the report.<h2>The systemic problems facing women in the workplace have no clear solution</h2>That being said, the team added that their findings required independent replication in order to be considered anything other than initial results."We are by no means suggesting Sandberg intended to blame women for inequality," the team wrote in the <a href="https://hbr.org/2018/07/lean-in-messages-and-the-illusion-of-control%27Lean" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harvard Business Review</a>.The researchers wrote that Sandberg's book provides ample doses of both approaches. Her "lean in" ethos encourages women to thrive on an individual basis, but Sandberg also includes hard data and studies highlighting the macro-level workplace problems that women face across the board.Myriad factors like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-women-almost-never-become-ceo-2016-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biases</a> at the negotiation table, quiet but widespread sexist assumptions, and the trade-offs and penalties that come with starting a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-delaying-parenthood-and-having-kids-later-is-a-big-deal-2015-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">family</a> factor into workplace inequality.One woman's professional success can pave the way for greater inclusivity in a specific company or industry. But that doesn't mean that broader, systemic shifts in workplace and public policy aren't required in order to combat issues like subtle <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/subtle-sexism-women-face-in-the-workplace-2015-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discrimination</a> and restrictive parental leave <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-america-doesnt-have-paid-leave-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policies</a> in the US.Sandberg herself has spoken out about systemic problems facing women in the workplace. Last year, she criticized male executives who appoint token women and minorities to leadership positions as a band aid for otherwise homogeneous companies, Business Insider's Julie Bort <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sheryl-sandberg-hiring-one-woman-isnt-enough-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.In a 2015 <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/sheryl-sandberg-women-are-leaning-inbut-they-face-pushback-1474963980">Wall Street Journal op-ed</a>, she also pointed out the double standard when it comes to assertiveness in the workplace."We expect men to be assertive, look out for themselves, and lobby for more - so there's little downside when they do it," Sandberg wrote. "But women must be communal and collaborative, nurturing and giving, focused on the team and not themselves, lest they be viewed as self-absorbed.
