<ul><li>100% UHNIs in India expect their wealth to grow in 2023, compared to 69% globally. </li><li>15% Indian UHNIs held residential property abroad as compared to 28% globally. </li><li>For UHNIs, the top segments for wealth allocation were equities, direct commercial property, bonds and private equity. </li><li>For the first time, private investment surpassed institutional investment in global commercial real estate. </li></ul>Last year was good for Indian ultra high networth individuals or UHNIs – as 88% of them reported growth in their wealth. Globally, only 40% of the <keyword id="469040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="super-rich" source="Orion">super rich</keyword> could make the same claim as per a report by property consultant <keyword id="6363605" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="knight-frank" source="Orion">Knight Frank</keyword>. It hence comes as no surprise that all of them – 100% of Indian UHNIs — expect their wealth to grow even in 2023, says The Wealth Report 2023. Globally, 69% of them expect good tidings this year. In India, 19% of Indian super rich are self-made and under 40 years, while globally they account for 23%. UHNIs or the super-rich are defined as those who have an investable surplus of ₹25 crore or more. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="A bad year for global wealth" comment="subhead2" text="A bad year for global wealth">A bad year for global wealth</cmsannotation> The year of 2022 however was a wealth destroyer, the aggregate global wealth fell by 10%. The most hit was Europe which was on the receiving end of the Russia-Ukraine war – whose wealth fell by 17%. In Asia and Middle East regions, it fell by 7% each, and 10% in the Americas. Globally, in 2022, private investors were the most active buyers in global commercial real estate investment. They invested $455 billion accounting for 41% of the total. “This represents private investors’ highest share of global commercial real estate on record and is the first-time private investment has surpassed institutional investment,” Knight Frank said. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="More wealth to secondary homes" comment="subhead2" text="More wealth to secondary homes">More wealth to secondary homes</cmsannotation> The report also revealed interesting insights regarding home ownership of Indian UHNIs. On average, they own an average of 5.1 homes, while the global number is 4.1. The wealth allocation to primary and secondary homes was 37% for Indians, and 32% globally. Only 15% Indian UHNWIs held residential property abroad as compared to 28% globally. Interestingly, the top favoured countries for home purchase for Indian super rich in 2022 were UK (47%), UAE (41%), USA (29%) and Canada (18%). As many as 21% of Indian UHNIs considered making commercial property investments, and slightly higher than the global average. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Bags, not classic cars" comment="subhead2" text="Bags, not classic cars">Bags, not classic cars</cmsannotation> Most UHNIs allocate most of their wealth into equity markets — at 34%. Next comes direct commercial property (17%), bond market (16%) and private equity (10%). Art, watches and luxury handbags were the top three investments of passion for Indians. Globally, art, classic cars and jewelry were the top three. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Capital appreciation vs preservation" comment="subhead2" text="Capital appreciation vs preservation">Capital appreciation vs preservation</cmsannotation> In 2023, 31% UHNIs said that capital appreciation was their biggest goal for wealth, while 25% said that their biggest goal was capital preservation. Income generation (25%) and diversification(14%) were the next biggest goals. Also, one-third of the respondents said that they want to expand property holdings while 29% said that they want to deleverage. When it came to the safest asset class, residential property was considered the safest, followed by gold, bonds, commercial property and equity markets. Cryptocurrencies were considered as the most volatile asset. The report also revealed that 77% UHNIs feel that environmental considerations impact their investment decision to some extent. India's super-rich gear up for a better year ahead: Knight Frank

Drone-as-a-Service (DaaS) player <keyword id="4610420" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="garuda-aerospace" source="Orion">Garuda Aerospace</keyword> on Monday said it has raised $22 million as Series A funding. According to Garuda Aerospace, the funding round was led by <keyword id="6357097" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="venture-capital" source="Orion">Venture Capital</keyword> firm <keyword id="15395438" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sphiticap" source="Orion">SphitiCap</keyword> which invested $12 million along with participation from other global investors, angel investors and high net worth individuals (<keyword id="50379" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hni" source="Orion">HNI</keyword>) at $5 million. Another $5 million in funding from an infra-development company, a group of HNIs and angel investors from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, <keyword id="6358356" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uae" source="Orion">UAE</keyword> and Singapore was secured by the startup earlier. The company will use the funds raised for scaling up and research and development for building advanced drone solutions for the armed forces in collaboration with global companies for the defence and aerospace sector. The funds will also be used for the skilling and training of drone pilots and help create employment with deepening its footprints in <keyword id="142845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tier-ii" source="Orion">Tier II</keyword> and III cities. Speaking on the funding <keyword id="6037355" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="agnishwar-jayaprakash" source="Orion">Agnishwar Jayaprakash</keyword>, Founder and CEO said: "Garuda Aerospace aims to sell 25,000 drones in the next 18 months and is looking forward to exporting 10,000 drones to about 100 countries in the next 15 months." Drone player Garuda Aerospace raises $22 mn from SphitiCap & others

BSESENSEX was up 989.85 points or 1.68 per cent to close at 51,793.18 points. <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">NIFTY</keyword> gained 293.90 points or 1.68 per cent to close at 17,833.35 points. The broader indices saw BSE100, BSE200 and BSE500 gain 1.60 per cent, 1.67 per cent and 1.73 per centrespectively. BSEMIDCAP was up 1.86 per cent while BSESMALLCAP was up 2.53 per cent. Indian Rupee gained 22 paisa or 0.28 per cent to close at Rs 79.58. Dow Jones lost on the first two days and then gained on the remaining three days to end the week with gains of 833.27 points or 2.66 per cent to close at 32,151.71 points. In primary news, there was one listing, one issue which had opened for subscription and also closed and a third which had its roadshow. The issue from Dreamfolks Services Limited listed on Tuesday and fared well on expected lines. Shares which were issued at Rs 326, saw a discovered price of Rs 505 on BSE, a high of Rs 550 and closed at Rs 462.65. By Friday, shares lost some ground and closed lower at Rs 430.80. The issue from Tamilnad Mercantile Bank had tapped the markets with its fresh issue in a price band of Rs 500-525. The issue was subscribed 2.85 times with QIB portion subscribed 1.62 times, HNI portion was subscribed 2.94 times and Retail portion was subscribed 6.43 times. There were 1.33 lakh applications. Considering the issue, the response from QIB's could at best be said as tepid. The issue from Harsha Engineers Limited opens on Wednesday the 14th of September and closes on Friday the 16th of September. The price band is Rs 314-330. The company makes bearing cages as its key product and supplies to leading bearing manufacturers not only in India but also globally. Japanese manufacturers have begun to buy from Harsha and this could be a big boost in revenues going forward. The company reported revenues of Rs 1,321.48 crore for the year ended March 2022 and a profit after tax of Rs 91.94 crore. The PE at the top end of the band is 27.73 times. The company has undergone a restructuring exercise and has amalgamated all its businesses under one name. This has diluted the equity to some extent and while the basic EPS for the year ended March 22 was 16.06, on a diluted basis it works out to Rs 11.09. The share and the business look attractive. Coming to the markets in the week ahead, our markets would find strong resistance at the 17,750-800 levels and 59,450-59,550 levels. While we have almost closed at the above levels, we need to break out of them and sustain at higher levels. In case they do manage to break these levels for any reason, the previous tops made at 18,000 and 60,400 would be very strong resistances in the period coming up. Strong support exists at 17,350 and 58,200. If these break then the next level would be 17,000-17,050 and 57,250-57,350. For a clear trend to emerge, 17,000 and 57,250 on the lower side and 18,000 and 59,550 on the upper side need to be decisively broken. Currently we have no news or momentum in the markets to break these levels. The strategy would be to buy on dips and sell on rallies. One interesting development that has taken place in the last week, was that shorts in the futures were squared off to a large extent and to that effect markets have become hollow. In case there is any bad news and markets take a beating, the fall could become sharper than expected. Trade cautiously. He specialises in building technology-enabled financing models and worked as a <keyword id="2108874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="financial-risk-consultant-in-Dubai">financial risk consultant in Dubai</keyword> before starting up Milaap. 
 
What inspired the venture: A sabbatical that changed life. In 2008, Anoj took some time off to be with SKS Microfinance and worked on a project to provide solar lanterns on credit in a few tribal villages in <keyword id="6357961" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Odisha">Odisha</keyword>. There he met Mayukh who was then working with the solar lantern-maker D.lightdesign. While on this project, Anoj noticed how <keyword id="6621346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-loans">small loans</keyword> impacted life in a big way, especially at the bottom of the pyramid, and the idea of Milaap came to his mind. Developing a crowd-funding platform to connect India’s underprivileged with prosperous individuals and <keyword id="2108906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Institutional-lenders">institutional lenders</keyword> across the globe seemed the right way to go about it. Anoj, who knew Sourabh from 2006 when he interned at his previous start-up Microappli, got him and Mayukh together to give shape to the idea of Milaap, which finally went live in June 2010. 
 
What’s the pitch: <keyword id="2108919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lend-a-little">Lend a little</keyword>, <keyword id="2108920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="change-a-lot">change a lot</keyword> – that’s Milaap’s motto and it has started happening. “India has a large pool of people who don’t have access to traditional banking, but they do require <keyword id="2108923" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funds-for-self-employment">funds for self-employment</keyword> and developmental initiatives.  Milaap is currently targeting over 700 million Indians who are mostly living in the rural &amp; semi-urban areas and unable to access formal sources of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword>. According to the social enterprise, less than 5% of them are able to procure reasonably priced, life-improving loans for their small businesses, vocational training or other essential household assets, and that’s where the ‘loans’ raised by Milaap come in . 
 
How it works: At Milaap, the work is done in two stages. One part is <keyword id="2108932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shortlisting-borrowers">shortlisting borrowers</keyword> and publishing their profiles/projects on Milaap.org for crowd funding. Second part is deployment of the loans, monitoring their usage and ensuring timely repayments. Understandably, the second part is more cumbersome and requires a lot of offline work. Milaap has already tied up with 20-plus carefully selected ‘field partners’ (chosen from a wide range of <keyword id="164768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microfinance-institutions">microfinance institutions</keyword> or <keyword id="113682" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MFIs">MFIs</keyword>, <keyword id="1417942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Social-Businesses">social businesses</keyword>, <keyword id="2108940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vocational-training-institutions">vocational training institutions</keyword>, etc.,) to identify the most deserving candidates/projects for loans. Once they are selected, each <keyword id="2108943" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Borrowers-profile">borrower’s profile</keyword> is uploaded on the site, along with the fund raised till date and the amount still required for completing the loan. 
 Lending online is quite simple, though. Browse through the profiles to choose a borrower or select one from an impact area that you feel strongly about. You can also use various parameters such as cause, <keyword id="6379164" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="LOCATION">location</keyword>, <keyword id="2108946" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Project-urgency">project urgency</keyword>, <keyword id="2108948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Repayment-period">repayment period</keyword>, women-centric projects to fine-tune your <keyword id="2108951" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Borrower-search">borrower search</keyword>. After the loan payment is made online, Milaap disburses the amount to the concerned <keyword id="2108956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Field-partner">field partner</keyword> and the end-borrower gets it from the field partner. When repayment is done (end-borrower – field partner – Milaap), ‘credits’ are accumulated in your Milaap account. When the loan is fully repaid, you can either withdraw the money or roll it into another project. Claim to fame: The concept and the build-up. According to the co-founders, crowd-funding is still a niche concept in the country but it is gaining traction gradually. Till date, Milaap has raised and disbursed over Rs 8.4 crore in 8,633 loans, impacting more than 46,393 people across 11 states in India. These loans are essentially raised to fulfil a wide range of <keyword id="2108963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Developmental-requirements">developmental requirements</keyword> including <keyword id="566897" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="basic-education">basic education</keyword> &amp; vocational training, <keyword id="572926" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="seed-capital">seed capital</keyword> for small businesses, <keyword id="2109008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Access-to-clean-water">access to clean water</keyword> &amp; <keyword id="49770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanitation">sanitation</keyword>, and <keyword id="2109012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Safe-lighting">safe lighting</keyword>. Moreover, Milaap boasts 100% repayment of loans till now, indeed a rare feat when banks and big <keyword id="34503" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="financial-institutions">financial institutions</keyword> (<keyword id="4776620" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="FIs">FIs</keyword>) are suffering from the rise in bad loans. 
 The organisation is also focusing on <keyword id="2109025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pan-India-expansion">pan-India expansion</keyword>. “Earlier, we were mostly operating in states like <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>. But now we are scaling up our operations and growing in states like Odisha, <keyword id="65591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mizoram">Mizoram</keyword> and even Gujarat,” notes Sourabh. 
 
Show me the money: While a borrower gets the entire sum offered by the lender, Milaap charges its field partners a 5% fee on the loans disbursed through them, to cover its operating costs. Its field partners, in turn, charge affordable interest from the end-borrower to meet their operating costs. Milaap also makes sure that all fees are disclosed upfront. 
 
Unlike many other ventures in this space, this social enterprise is a for-profit concern, but has not reached break-even yet. However, it has found some solid backers and already raised $1.1 million in Series A venture funding in May 2013. The money raised is being utilised for developing the online platform further and scaling up operations. “We want the number of lenders to go up to 100,000 in the next 18 months. That is the tipping point from where we can gather momentum and look at break-even,” adds Sourabh. 
 The <keyword id="2026013" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Series-A-round">Series A round</keyword> was led by Singapore-based <keyword id="969909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jungle-Ventures">Jungle Ventures</keyword>, an early-stage investment firm and an approved <keyword id="2109042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Technology-incubator">technology incubator</keyword> under the <keyword id="2109044" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Singapore-National-Research-Foundation">Singapore National Research Foundation</keyword>’s Technology Incubation Scheme.  Interestingly, only 40% of the total lending amount comes from individual lenders (mostly from India, Singapore, the US and <keyword id="6356687" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword>) while 60% funding comes from institutional lenders, social funding and even family offices. Biggest challenge: There is competition from a few sites like <keyword id="1658892" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kiva">Kiva</keyword> or Wishberry, but it is still a niche space and <keyword id="2109065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Discoverability">discoverability</keyword> is the main challenge now, feels Sourabh. “We need to do more marketing and promotion to let people know such a platform exists. That will help us get more lenders on board, more field partners and subsequently, help more and more people get life-changing access to capital,” he says. 
 
A word for wannapreneurs: Take the plunge and do it. ‘Now’ is always a good time to do it – so don’t hesitate. I always feel that the risk part is overrated in entrepreneurship. You actually need the experience before you can succeed. So start early and make sure that you get the kind of experience you need for long-term success. Your first initiative may not be all that great but at least, you would have learnt from all your mistakes. Try fast and fail fast before you can succeed.
