<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Army Photo</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The reasons why individuals join the US military are as diverse and unique as each person serving. </p><p>But, whatever the reasons for why someone joined the military, service members can bond with each other over both the negatives and positives of serving in the armed forces.</p><p>In a recent <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comments/49lurx/what_is_your_favorite_part_of_being_in_the/">Reddit thread</a>, military members responded to the question, "What is your favorite part of being in the military?" </p><p>Predictably, the answers varied greatly, from the steadiness of pay in the military to the sense of belonging to something greater than the individual. We've collected our favorite answers below. </p><p>For Reddit user <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comments/49lurx/what_is_your_favorite_part_of_being_in_the/d0svnpv">terrez</a>, the greatest part of being in the military was the opportunities to see and experience things he would never have had the opportunity to otherwise: </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Got to live in Japan, a place I never thought I would see I person. So that's pretty neat. Occasionally an f16 will be doing loopdy loops and stuff over the flight line (idk why) and it's like a quick little air show.</p><p>This point of view, the fact that the military is an eye-opening experience, was <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comments/49lurx/what_is_your_favorite_part_of_being_in_the/d0t80g5">echoed</a> by LordWartooth: </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I would honestly have to say, both sarcastically and seriously, that my favorite part of being in the military has to be the eye opening experience about life in general. When you see senior field grade officers who can barely read, or senior enlisted whose uniforms could be painted on, considering how tight they are, and you know that they have found success in life, then I should know that consistently aiming to be better than that will take me where I want to be in life, in the military or outside of it.</p><p>Reddit user Esdarke quickly <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comments/49lurx/what_is_your_favorite_part_of_being_in_the/d0tcpwq">agreed</a> with LordWartooth's point: </p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Absolutely this. Service members share their favorite parts of life in the military

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>A Twitter user shared a recent experience at the gym which has gone viral.</strong></li><li><strong>She witnessed a girl pretend she had just farted in order to get a guy who had approached her and her friend to leave them alone. </strong></li><li><strong>Tweet has been shared over 22,000 times and received over 130,000 likes.</strong></li></ul><p><br>American author Olivia Cole, who uses the Twitter handle <a href="https://twitter.com/RantingOwl">@<strong>RantingOwl,</strong></a> shared a situation she witnessed at the gym with her followers - and it has certainly got people talking.</br></p><p>Cole, who is from Louisville, Kentucky, said she was at the gym when a guy approached two young women - and they came up with a creative way to deflect his unwanted attention.</p><p>Cole added that the girl in question was only 21 years old.</p><p><strong>The message has been retweeted over 22,000 times and received over 130,000 likes. This is what a small drink looks like in the UK.</p><p>Joe Avella: This is a US small.</p><p>Harry: This is what a medium drink looks like.</p><p>Joe: This is a US medium.</p><p>Harry: And this is a large.</p><p>Joe: [grunts] And this is a US large.</p><p>Harry: So, with our McNuggets in the UK, the default adult sizes on the menu are a box of six, a box of nine, or a share box of 20.</p><p>Joe: Nuggets. You can get a box of four, or you can get a six piece, or 10. 20, for "sharing." Or...ahh. 40. And according to the three McDonald's in the area, they don't have 20 or 40 boxes, they just do them in increments of 10, but this is on the menu.</p><p>Harry: In the UK, we got three sizes of <keyword id="177068" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fries">fries</keyword>. These are our small fries in the paper bag.</p><p>Joe: Here is the small fry.</p><p>Harry: These are our medium fries in the iconic carton.</p><p>Joe: Here is the medium fry.</p><p>Harry: And then these are our large fries.</p><p>Joe: And here is the large fry.</p><p>Harry: So, we couldn't find the exact weight measurement for these fries online, so what we're gonna do is weigh them ourselves. Just out of curiosity, gonna bring our trusty friend, the scales, back, and we're gonna weigh the Big Mac and see if there is any difference in size. I'm not sure there will be, but let's find out.</p><p>Joe: Hang on, hang on, hang on.</p><p>Harry: So, while McDonald's fries might look and taste pretty similar in the UK and the US, in the UK we only have three ingredients, which is oil, salt, and potatoes.</p><p>Joe: The McDonald's french fries in America have way more ingredients. These fries are made from potatoes, obviously; a vegetable oil, which has canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogeni... hydrogenitated...genitated?</p><p>Producer: Hydrogenated. Joe: Ha! Thank you. Hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor, dextrose, sodium aspid...phosphitate? Phosphifi...phos...phiupp...pyrophosphate, pyrophosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, which is used to maintain the color. Are they that much of a different color than the ones in the UK? Is it worth it? Can we get a side-by-side comparison? Are they that much more bright yellow we need to put sodium acid pyrophosphate or whatever it's called in it? Salt, and I should mention that a natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as a starting ingredient, and of course I have no idea what that means.</p><p>Harry: So, the biggest calorie difference in a Big Mac actually comes from the sauce. In the US they've got about 40 more calories than we do in the UK. We're not sure if this is because there's more sauce or because the ingredients list in the UK is just a little bit more simple.</p><p>Joe: Our sauce is made of soybean oil, sweet relish, which is made of diced pickles, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, distilled vinegar, salt, corn syrup, all right, two types of corn syrup, xanthan gum, hang on. Calcium chloride, spice extractives? Water. All right, I've heard of that. Egg yolks, distilled vinegar, spices, onion powder, salt, propylene glycol alginate? Garlic powder; vegetable protein, which has hydrolyzed corn, soy, and wheat; sugar; caramel color; turmeric; extractives of paprika; and, of course, soy...lechithen. Leechithen. Lecithin. I don't know which one it is.</p><p>Harry: So, if you are trying to eat healthily at McDonald's, it might actually be the drinks that you have to look out for. Joe: That's nothing, guys. Our chocolate shake? 840 calories. That's as many calories as two cheeseburgers and one hamburger.</p><p>Harry: So, what does that all mean? If you were to walk into a UK McDonald's and order yourself a large Big Mac meal with a milkshake, it would be around 1,400 calories. Joe: And if you were to get the large Big Mac meal with a chocolate shake in America, the total here is 1,870 calories. So that's 1,870 calories, the daily calorie allowance for an American dude is 2,500, OK. So you have 630 left. One McNugget is 55 calories, right? So you could also have 11 more nuggets, and there you go, that's all you need for the day.</p><p>Harry: Here's everything you can only get at a UK McDonald's. So, here we've got the Veggie Deluxe burger, which is a veggie burger that's served with some mayo and some lettuce. Here we've got a Chicken Legend, which is a chicken burger, again served with mayo and lettuce.</p><p>Joe: Chicken Legend, I don't even know what that is. Not gonna catch on. That can stay in the UK.</p><p>Harry: We have a range of wraps that you can get in the UK. We have a wrap of the day. Here we've got the fajita crisp, which is some chicken, along with some veg and some spicy fajita sauce. Here we've got some Veggie Dippers. These were actually introduced at part of Veganuary in 2020 in the UK, but they're stuck on the menu. So, these are Vegan Society-approved, and they're sort of like a fried-bean-patty sort of thing.</p><p>Joe: [sighs] Like, pick a more unappetizing thing to get at McDonald's. Veggie Dippers.</p><p>Harry: And then finally we've got some Mozzarella Dippers, which are just kind of mozzarella sticks, really.</p><p>Joe: Well, sucks to be in the UK, 'cause everything you see right here is USA only, baby. Haha, USA only! So, I'm gonna talk about the coffee drinks real fast. Here in the US, we have all the same coffee drinks they do in the UK, but every coffee drink has an iced version and also a caramel and/or French vanilla and/or mocha version, depending on what you're getting. So, we in the US, of course, have more variety. Shamrock Shake. The Shamrock Shake is, like, it's like vanilla and mint shake. Strawberry Sundae. This has recently been discontinued in the UK. Sorry, guys. Still got it in the US. My favorite as a kid, the Caramel Sundae. Fruit and Yogurt Parfait, maybe it's healthy, I have no idea, probably not. Those were the cold items I wanted to get out of the way as they slowly melt under these lights. Got a lot more to go through. Harry, bear with me here, buddy. Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Sandwich. Yo, I think this was introduced when the chicken-sandwich wars were really heating up when Chick-fil-A started taking over. Let's see what's under the hood. Look at that. Look at this. Quarter Pounder with Cheese Deluxe. This is your fancy Quarter Pounder with Cheese. This is for Sunday dinner. When you have company over. Ah, there's so much. Sausage Breakfast Burrito. Even after it's, for a while, it's, like, still, like, glowing yellow. [laughs] Now, these are the Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Tenders. These smell amazing. I wanna just bite into these so bad. I wanna just take a big bite. Wanna talk about sauces real quick. OK, I'm at McDonald's, and I go get me one of everything. I've heard from Harry and the team over in the UK that some of these they don't have, including sweet 'n sour, honey mustard, what else don't you guys have? I don't think you guys have ranch either, or buffalo. I gotta say, though, the sauces are everything.</p><p>Harry: We've got a couple of sauces that are kind of unique to the UK as well. We've got a sweet curry dipping sauce, and then we've also got a salsa dip as well, which I didn't know existed until today. Joe: Oh, yes, Donut Sticks. These Donut Sticks also come with a chocolate dipping sauce. Another thing I'm certain they don't have in the UK. Yo ho ho ho ho ho ho! Breakfast is served! Look at this. Oh, yeah. Who's ready to start the day? [claps] It's McGriddle talk. [audience applause] [jazzy music]</p><p>So, for those of you in the UK who don't know what a McGriddle is, the United States McDonald's had this genius idea: What if we took breakfast sandwiches, replaced the buns, and made them pancakes and somehow injected some sort of syrup flavor into the pancakes? And the McGriddle was born. And, I have to say, they're fantastic. This one right here, the bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle. This is the sausage. Yeah? Hi! Hey, hey. In the UK, you guys call biscuits cookies. Here...no. So, in the UK, biscuits are cookies, what we call cookies. In the US, biscuits are what we call... uh... I don't know what else you can call them. Like, you bake them, and they're from the South, and they're dry, and I don't know what they are. Much like the McGriddles, we have a version of every breakfast sandwich that instead of the regular bun bread, it's biscuits. Not the cookie biscuits like you guys have. These biscuits.</p><p>Harry: Joe, you were so close on the whole cookie-biscuit thing. What you guys call biscuits, we would actually kind of call scones, or scones, depending on where you're from, and the thought of putting breakfast food in between them is kinda weird. They're usually reserved for cream and jam for an afternoon tea.</p><p>Joe: Last, and, in my opinion, least, is this thing. Every difference between UK and US McDonalds including portion sizes, ingredients, and exclusive items

This is "<keyword id="9221472" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="food-wars">Food Wars</keyword>."</p><p>This is the smallest pizza you can get in the UK. It's called an individual, and it measures 7 inches across.</p><p><strong>Joe Avella:</strong> Our smallest is, believe it or not, this small. Here it is, and it measures in diameter 10 inches.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> The next size up is a small, which measures 9.5 inches.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> Next size up for the US is our medium, which is 12 inches.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> This is 11.5 inches.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> What? I'm starving. Hey, I grabbed a slice. I'm starving. This pizza smells so good. I skipped breakfast. Next pizza. Next up for the US is our large, which is a 14-inch diameter. Oh, hell, yeah. What's with the way they cut your large pizza, Harry? It's ridiculous. Look at that.</p><p>And not to be outdone, the US has one more size, the extra large. Diameter, 16 inches. Bro! Look at the size of this thing.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> Now, a 2.5-inch difference might not sound like a lot, but if you factor that into the surface area, it's actually 58 square inches wider than the UK's largest pizza, which is almost a third of an increase.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> Am I looking at this right? Is it supposed to be six slices? It's six slices. That can't be right. Six slices for a extra-large pizza? Look at the size of these slices!</p><p>In the US at a Domino's, the extra-large pizza will cost you a very reasonable $13.99. Hm. That...circle.... That is 201 square inches, which breaks down to roughly 7 cents an inch? Nice.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> Now, shockingly, $13.99 will only get you a small pizza in the UK. A small pizza is 9.5 inches across, and that gives it a surface area of 71 square inches. Now, if you divide the $13.69 price tag by the 71, you find out that you're actually paying 19 cents per square inch.</p><p>Ultimately, it means that if you went into a US and a UK Domino's with $13.99 to spend, you'd be able to get more than double the pizza for your money in the US store. Let's compare large cheese pizzas in the two countries. This is what a UK large cheese looks like.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> And this is what a large, properly cut Domino's cheese pizza looks like in the US.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> It's cut into 10 pieces, and each slice contains 176 calories. That means that in total, the pizza in the UK is 1,760 calories.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> Instead of 10, we got eight slices. That means each slice is roughly 280 calories, which makes the whole pizza 2,240 calories. And according to the thing that was written for me, that is almost 480 calories more than the UK large.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> But why is that exactly? Let's see if we can get any clues from the ingredients. Let's start with the foundation of any pizza, which is the dough. In the UK, the dough is made of wheat flour, a wheat and milk premix, rapeseed oil, water, and yeast.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> Yes, but here in the US, our dough is made of... enriched flour, wheat - oh, God, I hate reading this stuff. Enriched flour, which is wheat flour, iron, thiamine mononitrate, niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid, water, soybean oil. And it contains less than 2% of the following: sugar, salt, whey, maltodextrin, dextrose, dough conditioners such as sodium stearoyl lacksi... lactylate. I don't know. It's on the screen. You read it out loud. Enzymes! Calcium sulfate, ascorbic acid, calcium phosphate, L-cysteine. Good for hangovers, I hear. Yeast and cornmeal. Uh, yeah, much different. A lot more chemicals. Who saw that coming? [laughs]</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> How about the cheese? Domino's in the UK refers to its cheese simply as mozzarella, and it's mostly because the ingredients are just that.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> In the US, Domino's doesn't - possibly can't - call their cheese mozzarella. Instead, they refer to it as "pizza cheese." So, the Domino's in the US's "pizza cheese" has the following ingredients. Prop-io-nate. Propionate.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> Now let's look at the pepperoni. Most of the ingredients in US and UK pepperoni are actually pretty similar. They both contain pork, salt, dextrose, spices, sodium nitrite, citric acid, flavorings, and starter culture.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> You know, the only difference is that our pepperoni contains beef. Also preservatives beutohydrolate, hydrolazinase, and beautohadalid blabbity blah. BHA and BHT. I can't pronounce them. They're bad. [laughs]</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> It turns out BHA and BHT are actually subject to restrictions in the European Union and can't be added to foods such as pepperoni. This might be because studies have shown that BHA can cause tumors in rats and is therefore reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen in humans.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> Oh, well. I'm gonna die doing what I love. Eating banned chemicals. Mm!</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> We reached out to Domino's to get some clarity on the pepperoni situation. We got our info from their ingredients webpage. However, when we checked with them, they told us that their information was incorrect, and they've updated it since to say that BHA and BHT have now been removed from the pepperoni. I think this happened at some point during 2018. They couldn't say exactly when. But, Joe, it sounds like you're OK after all. Here are all the items you can only find on the menu at a UK Domino's.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> And here are all the things you can only get at a US Domino's.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> Let's start with the pizza itself. So, firstly is the crust options. Now, in the UK, we can actually get stuffed crust. But what we've gone for here is the Italian-style crust. Apologies to the country of Italy for this one. Now, the Italian crust is basically the same dough but just thinner and therefore a bit more crispy. There are a few toppings that you can only get on your pizza in the UK. These include some options we've got here, like meatballs, sweet corn, and red onion. But that's not all. You can also get things like Catalan chicken, which is a chicken in a kind of paprika spice. You can get tandoori chicken, which is chicken with some Indian spice blends. And you can also get tuna on your pizza.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> Whoa, wait. Did he say tuna? Tuna on a pizza? No, no way. So, this right here is a pizza that has everything you can only get at a US Domino's. First of all, the crust. It is our thin Brooklyn-style crust. Instead of tomato sauce, we did an Alfredo white sauce. We got banana peppers on here, salami, feta cheese, and also Parmesan and cheddar. This should be known as The US Only. Like, Pizza Hut should have this on the menu, and you go, "Give me The US Only." And this is the pizza they give you. Yuck. Don't get this. [laughing] Yeah, I hate that. Grab a slice. See what you think.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> So, here are some UK sides that you won't find on the menu at a US Domino's. First of all, we've got the garlic cheesy bread. Chicken Kickers, which are just, like, nuggets with a spicy coating. Pretty recently, they've added these Pop'n Chicken bites to the menu, which, kind of similar to KFC's popcorn chicken. You can also get Chicken Strippers, which is just kind of like chicken tenders. Potato wedges, if you wanted some kind of potato option to go with your pizza, and then you can also get a tub of coleslaw.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> I don't think we have garlic cheesy bread, but we do have this, which is like a stuffed cheese bread. Also, this side, they have these chicken pieces, and then, these right over here, these Parmesan cheese kind of bread knots. [crunching] Also I think it's pretty cool, is Domino's will hook you up with a side of grated Parmesan. That's pretty nice. Chicken carbonara, which is a pasta dish, but looks like obviously chicken, bits of bacon, onion. In the US, Domino's offers a lot of different varieties of sandwiches. I just picked one. I got the chicken parm sandwich. Let's take a look at that right there. Look at that chicken parm. How good does that look? Classic garden salad. We found something green on the menu, which is nice. What do we got here? Tomatoes, onions, cheese, lettuce, croutons. [sighs] Who cares?</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> Now, the default dipping sauce that will come with your pizzas is this garlic and herb dip in the UK. But there are also a couple of sauces which are exclusive to the UK. These include a little pot of Frank's RedHot sauce, and we can also get a honey mustard.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> The Domino's in the US has their own exclusive sauces. This kicker hot sauce, the sweet mango habanero sauce. This one is really good. Ranch. You guys don't have ranch? Thought you did. Guess not. Blue cheese dressing, mm. And, of course, marinara sauce.</p><p><strong>Harry:</strong> And finally, if you're someone with a sweet tooth, Domino's has some exclusive dessert items in the UK. Firstly, we've got Domino's cookies, which are actually, like, really good, especially if you get them when they're warm, and they kind of stay warm when they rest on the pizza boxes. And then you can also get a range of Ben and Jerry's flavors from Domino's in the UK. They're, like, a licensed vendor, which is cool.</p><p><strong>Joe:</strong> And for dessert in the US, you can get either these marbled cookie brownies or these chocolate lava crunch cakes. They also throw in this, the sweet icing. I'm sure it's amazing. So you can pour more sugar all over the sugar. Let's put some icing on that lava guy. [laughs] Oh! That's too much. Stop! I gotta get, I gotta, I'm gonna, like, eat this whole tray. I gotta get this out of my face. I'm ready to destroy these brownies.</p>

Every difference between UK and US Domino's including portion sizes, calories, and exclusive items

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>USAF/Osakabe Yasuo</span></p><p class="caption">A C-130 Hercules pilot during a training mission over Kanto Plain, Japan, October 14, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Air Force's ranks grew during the 2016 fiscal year, but as of April this year the service was still more than <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-forces-quiet-crisis-creating-pilot-and-manpower-shortage-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">1,500 pilots short</a> of the 20,300 it is mandated to have.</p><p>Of those missing, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-2018-budget-effect-on-air-force-personnel-and-readiness-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">roughly 1,000</a> are fighter pilots. And the service stands to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-air-force-is-getting-creative-to-tackle-its-pilot-shortage-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">lose 1,600 more</a> fliers over the next four years.</p><p><span>"We are in a crisis," Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein <a href="http://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1321906/air-force-leaders-address-aircrew-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> in late September. "If we don't find a way to turn this around, our ability to defend the nation is compromised."</span></p><p>The pilot shortage has been a problem for some time - Goldfein also called it a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-forces-quiet-crisis-creating-pilot-and-manpower-shortage-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">quiet crisis</a>" in summer 2016 - and stems from a number of sources, but it doesn't appear that getting pilots to sign up is one of them.</p><p>"Due to a combination of snowballing factors - budget cuts, longer deployments, drawdowns going back as far as the Cold War, and a recent spike in commercial-airline hiring - the Air Force can no longer train enough people to keep up with demand for the field and to keep pilots from leaving," Lara Seligman, the Pentagon editor for Aviation Week, said during a recent edition of Check 6, the Aviation Week podcast.</p><p>"In fact, the Air Force can see more pilots coming up in the pipeline than it has room to produce, so it's not a recruitment problem," Seligman said. RJ Bergman fly their UH-1N Iroquois over a mountain range near Malmstrom Air Force Base, January 27, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Facing ongoing combat operations for much of the last 20 years, the Air Force has focused on keeping experienced pilots in combat roles, but one consequence of that has been a lack of pilots to act as training instructors.</p><p>This lack of instructors has created a bottleneck in the training pipeline, leaving introductory-level pilots with limited opportunities to advance, Seligman said. This affects the number of pilots available to fly advanced aircraft, and it also leads to frustration among airmen, who may leave for more lucrative work in the private sector.</p><p>While the Air Force has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-pay-pilots-bonus-incentives-to-stay-in-uniform-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">taken some steps</a> to expand overall recruiting, requirement standards for pilots have not been loosened, but the service is <a href="https://federalnewsradio.com/air-force/2016/10/air-force-considers-big-personnel-changes-bring-talent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">looking to make</a> training and other assignment practices <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-is-going-to-let-pilots-and-crews-pick-their-own-base-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">more flexible</a>. (A <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-air-force-considering-stop-loss-to-keep-pilots-2017-4">stop-loss policy</a> has also been broached.)</p><p>One step toward getting more pilots through the pipeline "would be outsourcing some training to universities or commercial companies," Seligman said, noting that such a measure might not work for fighter-pilot training but could work for mobility pilots or other non-fighter roles.</p><p>The Air Force is also reportedly considering <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-pilots-shortage-leading-to-red-team-adversary-outsourcing-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">outsourcing "red air" aircraft duties</a>, bringing in privately owned planes to pose as rival aircraft during training exercises, freeing up Air Force aircraft for other uses. The service is also looking to form additional training squadrons, but that effort is for now limited by the lack of training pilots, Seligman said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Air Force</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In 2016, the Air Force <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-scrambling-to-train-pilots-as-new-aircraft-wait-to-be-tested-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">trained 1,100 pilots</a>, including 235 fighter pilots. "This year they're ramping up, and the output's going to be closer to 1,200, but they want to ramp up to 1,600," Seligman added. "That's the requirement to meet the demand signal. But right now they're just completely maxed out in terms of aircraft, in terms of runways - just in terms of resources."</p><p>"We're maximizing the use of our air frames to the fullest extent that we can right now," Air Force Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson, head of Air Education and Training Command, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-scrambling-to-train-pilots-as-new-aircraft-wait-to-be-tested-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said last month</a>. "We can only produce so many flying training sorties per day, and that's going to be exceeded" to hit that 1,600-pilot goal.</p><p>The light-attack aircraft that the Air Force is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-testing-light-attack-aircraft-in-combat-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">evaluating</a> could help alleviate that resource problem and reduce the strain on some combat airframes, like the F-15s and A-10s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-the-fighter-jets-leading-the-air-war-against-isis-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">leading the air war</a> against ISIS.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Air Force Photo by Christopher Okula</span></p><p class="caption">A Textron Scorpion experimental light-attack aircraft at Holloman Air Force Base, July 31, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-air-force-is-getting-creative-to-tackle-its-pilot-shortage-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Air Force is also reviewing</a> other administrative, deployment, and training <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-is-looking-personnel-and-administrative-policy-changes-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">requirements</a> to not only free up qualified pilots and aircraft, but also improve quality of life for service members and improve retention.</p><p>The Voluntary Rated Return to Active Duty, or VRRAD, program, would let qualified <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-asking-retired-pilots-back-for-a-year-to-fix-pilot-shortage-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">retired pilots to return</a> and fill "critical-rated staff positions," allowing active-duty pilots to stay with units that need them for missions.</p><p>The Air Force has also gotten approval to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-pay-pilots-bonus-incentives-to-stay-in-uniform-2017-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">raise bonus limits</a> and plans to offer bonuses to more airmen in the coming fiscal year. It's really about the experience," Seligman said. "So I think they're focusing more on opening the pipeline and things like shorter deployments, as opposed to money, that will really make the pilots' lives better."</span></p><p>The service has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/general-now-leading-air-force-aircrew-crisis-task-force-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">appointed</a> the first general officer, Brig. Gen. Mike Koscheski, to lead its aircrew crisis task force, which was established earlier this year to address the pilot shortage</p><p><span>"This is a wicked problem," Koscheski <a href="http://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1321906/air-force-leaders-address-aircrew-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> in September. "The problem is not only ever changing. It fights back. You can't just fix one aspect. Pharrell's Ridiculous Grammy Hat Became An Internet Meme After Arby's Made Fun Of Him On Twitter

Police in riot gear arrested 35 at the event.</p></div><p></p></div>The annual St. Patrick's Day-themed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/umass-blarney-blowout-2014-3">"Blarney Blowout" party at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst ended with the arrests of dozens of people Saturday</a>, after a massive unruly student presence caused police officers to don riot gear, according to the Associated Press.</p>
<p>The AP reports that local Amherst police had to break up several large student parties during the day, and were repeatedly faced with "people throwing bottles, rocks, cans and snowballs." Police reportedly responded by shooting paintball-style guns filled with pepper spray into crowds of college-age partiers.</p>
<p>UMass <a href="http://dailycollegian.com/2014/03/10/blarney-blowout-leads-to-46-arrests-police-injuries/">student newspaper The Daily Collegian broke down the various arrests</a> during the day: </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">APD officers arrested 55 people with at least 18 of those people held on charges of failing to disperse and inciting a riot; at least three others were held on assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges; and an individual was also charged with breaking and entering. Other charges included disorderly conduct, alcohol violations and assault and battery on a police officer. Police also issued an additional 28 summons.</p>
<p>Additionally, four police officers were reportedly injured - three were hit by bottles and one was hurt while making an arrest, according to the AP.</p>
<p>In a statement, <a href="http://www.wcvb.com/news/police-in-riot-gear-arrest-35-at-umass-amherst/24879690"><span>UMass Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy</span> condemned any student participants</a>: </p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I want to make it unequivocally clear that the University of Massachusetts Amherst condemns the outrageous behavior of those students who acted out without any regard for public safety and the community in which they live. They have brought shame on our fine university and run the risk of devaluing the college degree that all of our students work so hard to achieve.</p>

Pictures From The Out Of Control UMass Party That Led To Dozens Of Arrests

In <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrLO0F-nKYs">a scene&#xa0;from the comedy show "Little Britain" where a reporter interviews people parodying&#xa0;Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones</a>, the singers talk about the celebrities they know.</p><p>They get into a discussion of&#xa0;the <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/emily-blunt-should-be-the-next-james-bond-2016-6">James Bond</a> theme songs they've made (Bassey wrote three of them). "What do you think of the more recent efforts?," the reporter asks. "'Goldeneye?'" Shirley asks. "I love Tina [Turner], <strong>but she doesn't have the range.</strong> I'm sorry, Tina. I love you. You know I adore you. <strong>But you don't have the range!</strong>"</p><p>The interviewer asks about more Bond theme songs. He likes Garbage's "The World is Not Enough." Does Bassey? "She doesn't have the range!" Sheryl Crow? "She doesn't have the range." Gladys Knight? "She doesn't have the range." Paul McCartney? "She doesn't have the range."</p><p>Shirley Bassey herself? "She doesn't have the range. I'm sorry, Shirley. I love her to bits. But she doesn't have the range."</p><p>"But that's you," the interviewer responds.</p><p>"I don't care. I don't have the range."</p><p>On June 20, someone tweeted&#xa0;part of the clip, <a href="http://nymag.com/selectall/2016/06/she-doesnt-have-the-range.html">as spotted by Select All</a>:</p><p><div></div></p><p>And thus, a meme was born. <strong>"She doesn't have the range" is a way to dismiss people who don't live up to your standards.</strong> In a music context specifically, it's a backhanded compliment. Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested Wednesday and charged with corruption. According to <a href="http://www.justice.gov/usao/ncw/pressreleases/2014/Charlotte-2014-03-26-cannon.html">a statement</a> from Anne Tompkins, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, a criminal complaint filed in federal court Wednesday charged Cannon with "theft and bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds, honest services wire fraud and extortion under color of official right." An affidavit filed in support of that complaint by FBI Special Agent Eric Davis showed one of the allegations against Cannon is a scheme to collect bribes using a "feminine hygiene product."</p>
<p>Davis' affidavit accused Cannon of "soliciting and accepting things of value-namely over $480,000 in cash, airline tickets, a hotel room, and the use of a luxury apartment" from undercover FBI agents posing as business people who wanted Cannon to use his position to help their various development projects. At least $12,500 of that amount allegedly was given to Cannon as a loan to help him start selling a mysterious "feminine hygiene product" called HERS.</p>
<p>According to Davis, one of the undercover FBI agents posed as a Chicago-based venture capitalist who wanted to build a nightclub in Charlotte. Davis said that undercover agent had dinner with Cannon on December 12, 2012. At the meal, Davis said Cannon, who was then a City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem, asked the undercover agent if they "would be willing to invest in a business that Cannon was allegedly creating named 'HERS.'"</p>
<p>"HERS, according to Cannon, was a feminine hygiene product to be marketed and sold in the United States," Davis said. </p>
<p>Davis said the undercover agent "agreed to provide Cannon a $12,500 'zero percent return-on-investment' loan for the alleged HERS product" in exchange for "his assistance with zoning and permitting" for the planned nightclub. </p>
<p>"Cannon told [the undercover agent] that a full container of the product was 'gonna cost me forty thousand dollars.' Cannon then stated, 'I can do something for abound $12,500,'" Davis said.</p>
<p>On January 8, 2013, Davis said Cannon sent the undercover agent "some basic documents about HERS, including a rudimentary slide show and spreadsheets" and told them about "possible investment levels" starting with $12,500 for one container of the product. The materials allegedly sent by Cannon also noted there were "different figures for larger or multiple containers."</p>
<p>Davis' complaint said Cannon then met with the undercover agent at his apartment and accepted the $12,500 in cash. According to Davis, Cannon initially reacted to the money being placed on a coffee table by looking "nervously towards the window and" covering the cash "with a folder." Cannon's apparent trepidation caused the undercover agent to shut the window blinds. Once the blinds were closed, Davis said Cannon "placed the money near his ear and fanned the bills." In addition to giving Cannon the money, Davis said the undercover agent discussed the help he expected to receive for the nightclub project at this meeting. </p>
<p>The following day, Cannon allegedly called the undercover agent and "offered to return" the "investment in HERS" if it "was intended for Cannon's use of his official office." According to the criminal complaint, Cannon said, "I'm not one of those Chicago or Detroit type uh, folk" and noted he looked good "in an orange necktie, but not an orange suit." However, in spite of this conversation, Davis said Cannon "failed to show up" for meetings on "two separate occasions" when the undercover agent came to Charlotte specifically to "discuss the payment and provide Cannon the opportunity to return the bribe."</p>
<p>Though HERS was central to Cannon's alleged bribery scheme, Davis said investigators were unable to find any evidence the mayor's "feminine hygiene product" business actually existed.</p>
<p>"Based on the financial investigation to date, the FBI has been unable to locate any bank account or corporate filing for HERS … or any corporate filings linking Cannon to HERS," Davis said. "The only potential financial transaction known to the FBI linking CANNON to an investment in HERS is a $1,000 wire transfer from Cannon's personal bank account to Taiwan dated May 08, 2012 marked 'R&amp;D.'"</p>
<p>Business Insider called Cannon's office to ask about the charges and whether he operates a feminine hygiene product business. A spokeswoman for the mayor who only identified herself as Phyllis said she would not comment on anything relating to the allegations.</p>
