Mumbai, "Killer Soup", starring <keyword id="7637" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manoj-bajpayee" source="Orion">Manoj Bajpayee</keyword> and <keyword id="79585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="konkona-sensharma" source="Orion">Konkona Sensharma</keyword>, will release on January 11 on Netflix, the streaming platform announced Thursday. Directed by <keyword id="94542" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="abhishek-chaubey" source="Orion">Abhishek Chaubey</keyword> of "<keyword id="6356850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="udta-punjab" source="Orion">Udta Punjab</keyword>" and "<keyword id="6192625" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sonchiriya" source="Orion">Sonchiriya</keyword>" fame, the comedy crime-drama is loosely inspired by a news headline and serves up a "tantalising blend of intrigue and dark humour". It follows Swathi Shetty (Konkana), an aspiring yet talentless home chef, who cooks up a bizarre plan to replace her husband, Prabhakar (Bajpayee), with her lover, Umesh (also played by Bajpayee). But when a bumbling local inspector and amateur villains stir the pot, things don't go as planned and a recipe for chaos ensues, the official synopsis read. Chaubey, who also serves as a co-writer and showrunner on the series, said his goal was to offer an "exceptional" crime thriller show that is laced with humour. "With 'Killer Soup', we wanted to give the audience permission to laugh and also be totally shocked with a crime thriller that blends in humour and quirkiness. It is a pot-boiler sent completely over the top with an exceptional cast including Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sensharma, Nasser, Sayaji Shinde and Lal. "Through this series, I wanted to serve up something exceptional with Netflix and it has been a creatively fulfilling experience with them," the director said in a statement. The show was announced in 2022 and was previously titled "Soup". Tanya Bami, director of series at Netflix India, said she is thrilled to kickstart 2024 with a bizarre series like "Killer Soup". "Abhishek Chaubey's 'Killer Soup' is a great way for us to start the new year. It's a genre audiences love, a crime thriller, like no other. Crazy, quirky and bizarre. Told to perfection by Abhishek and team and performed to excellence by Manoj and Konkona," Bami said. "Killer Soup" is produced by Honey Trehan and Chetana Kowshik.

<keyword id="6356850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udta-Punjab">Udta Punjab</keyword>, an upcoming Bollywood movie on drug issue in the northern state of India, has become a debatable topic whether artists and movie directors have right to freedom of expression or not. 
 The Indian <keyword id="62146" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Censor-Board">censor board</keyword>, Central Board of Film Certification, has demanded 89 cuts in the movie and has asked the movie to be released with an ‘A’ certification. 
 
Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani has come under the limelight, who even asked the filmmakers to drop the word ‘Punjab’ from the movie’s title. 
 However, director of the movie <keyword id="7929" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anurag-Kashyap">Anurag Kashyap</keyword> has refused to make the cuts, saying when the movie is already getting an ‘A’ certificate, why there is a need to make cuts and drop the state’s name.

Now, the producers of the movie, which is slated to release on June 17, have moved the Bombay High Court and a decision is pending on the same. The Bollywood fraternity has also come in support of the movie, demanding Nihalani’s resignation, who even alleged that Kashyap had taken money from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for showing Punjab in bad light. 
 
Amidst the tussle between Udta Punjab makers and the censor board, the moviegoers say the issue is serious and people should decide what to watch and what not to. 
 
The entire episode of censorship has become a joke as twitterati are mocking Nihalai and supporting the film fraternity.

#UdtaPunjab’s censorship is a national joke now. This is what people are saying

The Supreme Court of India refused to stay release on Bollywood movie <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=udta+punjab&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Udta Punjab</a>, while hearing a petition filed by a Punjab-based NGO. 
 The NGO- Human Rights Awareness Association-had moved the Apex Court to halt the screening of <keyword id="6356850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udta-Punjab">Udta Punjab</keyword>, which addresses drug menace issue in the State.

The vacation bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and L. Nageswara Rao has asked the NGO to approach Punjab &amp; Haryana High Court. 
 
Udta Punjab, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh, was mired in controversy after the censor board has asked for 13 cuts and issued an A-certificate. 
 
Then, Udta Punjab’s makers including director Anurag Kashyap had approached Bombay High Court, which directed for movie’s release with just one cut and ‘A’ certificate. 
 
The NGO then moved the Supreme Court saying that Bombay High Court cannot rule on what cuts can be made in a film, adding the film depicted Punjab in a negative vein.

Meanwhile, there were reports that the unedited version of Udta Punjab were released online and the cyber cell is looking into the issue. 
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, in a tweet, asked for support to free speech and not opt for pirates and piracy win. 
 
The film is slated for release on June 17.

Supreme Court clears release of Udta Punjab

In a major embarrassment to the censor board, the Bombay High Court ruled that the blanket ban on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=udta+punjab&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Udta Punjab</a> was interfering with the creative freedom and was not justified. 
 
Giving out the verdict, the high court said the movie can be released with just one cut and ‘A’ certification. The court stated that censor board cannot act like a grandmother and has to change with times. 
 
The court has asked the filmmakers to delete the urination scene from the movie. 
 
Earlier in the day, after reading the script, the Bombay High Court had stated that Udta Punjab was not supporting drugs and did not question India’s sovereignty or integrity. 
 
The court strongly remarked that they it did not find the film question sovereignty or integrity of India by the names of cities, reference to state or by a signpost. 
 
India’s censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani had asked for 13 cuts in the movie and told the filmmakers to remove the word ‘Punjab’ from the movie. 
 
“All characters show facets of drug menace, nothing to harm state's sovereignty. The board should use power as per Constitution and Supreme Court's direction. Udta Punjab' movie is depicting drugs menace in Punjab,” the court ruled. 
 
The court also reminded Nihalani that his job was to certify films not censor them. 
 
"The CBFC is not required by law to censor. The word "censor" is not in the Cinematograph Act. Therefore, if by law the board is empowered to make cuts and deletions in that power it must exercise it consist with constitutional guarantees," the court said. 
 
Udta Punjab’s makers had moved the court over cuts. 
 
Meanwhile, Bollywood director Abhishek Chaubey said he was massively relieved that the film was releasing on the scheduled date. 
 
Udta Punjab’s co-producer Madhu Mantena Verma said, “This judgement is for the whole film industry, it is not only for us. It is awesome.” 
 
Udta Punjab starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh is scheduled to release on June 17.

Udta Punjab will be released with just ONE cut and A-certificate

When Indian censor board chief <keyword id="15361" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pahlaj-Nihalani">Pahlaj Nihalani</keyword> accused Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap of taking money from the Aam Aadmi Party (<keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword>) for making <keyword id="6356850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udta-Punjab">Udta Punjab</keyword> to show the State in bad light, he must have not realised it would boomerang. 
 
The whole controversy surrounding Bollywood movie Udta Punjab, starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh, has knowingly or unknowingly worked in the favour of the AAP. 
 
Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, “It is a joke that Nihalani thinks AAP will give Anurag Kashyap money to make a film just to show BJP-SAD in a bad light. One need not go that far. It is all out in the open anyway. Drug abuse in Punjab is a harsh reality, and we are not supporting Kashyap here so much as we are backing the issue.” 
 
The accusations made by the censor board chief, which were rubbished by Anurag Kashyap, has given political plank to AAP for Punjab assembly elections in 2017-Drug menace. 
 
It is likely that AAP will give voice to the undertones of Punjab, who want to get rid of the menace, which has consumed many lives, taking away sole breadwinners from the families. 
 
AAP had surprised everyone in 2014 Lok Sabha polls by winning four seats in the lower house, and they were from Punjab. 
 
Since then, AAP has been making all efforts to cement its position in Punjab and derail SAD-BJP alliance. 
 
However, this is not the first time the AAP attacked the state government. In previous instances too, AAP leaders have openly accused Punjab Cabinet Ministers of being ‘drug lords’. 
 
“In the past, Sukhbir Badal has denied any drug menace in Punjab and his Cabinet Minister Surjit Jiyani has ruled out even a single drug-addict in the state, but on the other hand, Chief Minister Parkash Badal announced the opening of the country’s first Women Rehab Centre for de-addiction in the state,” AAP MP Bhagwant Mann had said. 
 
He also alleged that Punjab Cabinet Minister Bikramjit Majithia was a drug lord. 
 
Then, Majithia had filed a defamation case against the AAP leaders, including chief Arvind Kejriwal. 
 
In response to the defamation case, Bhagwant Mann said, “Badals should visit Maqbool Pura of Amritsar and Sur Singh village of Tarn Taran to assess how drugs ruined several families.” 
 
He has spoken the truth. 
 
The situation in Maqboolpura is very grim, as the village is now known as the ‘village of widows’. Families residing in the village say there is hardly any male member who is not affected by the drug menace and most of them have died. 
 
A study by Social Security Development of Women and Children department stated that 67 percent households in Punjab have at least one person addicted to drugs. The Narcotics Bureau stated that nearly 40 percent men in Punjab are hooked to drugs. 
 
Well, Kejriwal could gain ground in Punjab, dismantling the Punjab government. Only time will tell.

The duo then sang classics such as "Aa Chalke Tujhe Main Leke Chalun" and "Jeena Isika Naam Hai".Shah Rukh closed the concert with a song composed by rapper Badshah and penned by lyricist Saini.  The main point of contention seems to be that political parties aren’t normally seen propagating commercial films and the timing of the BJP sharing such an update ahead of the 2019 General Elections in India seems to be ill-advised. Others who claim the film is unfair The movie has created such controversy that the President of the Maharashtra State Youth Congress, Satyajeet Tambe Patil, went as far to write a letter to producer of the film demanding a ‘special screening’ ahead of its release. Both FCAT copies, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Rajinikanth&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Rajinikanth</a>'s blockbuster <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Kabali&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Kabali</a> met the same fate. Several websites had full links that could be used to view and download a pirate’s copy. India’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bollywood&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bollywood</a> film industry, the largest producer of films, is severely threatened by physical and <keyword id="577158" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="online-piracy">online piracy</keyword>. 
 
Believe it or not, 2015’s big release <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Baahubali&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Baahubali</a> took the maximum hit. With 1,485 active piracy links of the SS Rajamouli film available, the film has been downloaded illegally 24.76 lakh times. The total revenue loss in these 17 months to the Telugu film industry stands at a whopping Rs. 1,064 Crores. To expect these guys to face such losses and still tell us why Katappa killed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Baahubali&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Baahubali</a> is crazy. 
 
The numbers are mind-boggling to say the least. "Some unofficial estimates show that the overall revenue loss to the Indian Media and Entertainment industry is close to $ 2.5 billion”, Rajkmar Akela, Chairman, Anti Video Piracy Cell, Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce said. 
 
In 2014, India was listed in the International Piracy Watch List by the US. This is a list of four countries where piracy is rampant. However, few seem to care. The number of piracy cases registered in India reduced by just 10% this year as compared to 16% in the Asia-Pacific region. 
 "India's film industry - the economic contribution of the creative economy and creative sectors in India is limited. Issues like copyright infringement, <keyword id="54502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Film-piracy">film piracy</keyword>, cam cording and content leakage weaken the industry by hampering the deserved revenue production. Economies with supportive copyright protection are at least 30% more likely to have larger and more dynamic content and media sectors than are countries with less favorable IP regime", Mr. Patrick Kilbride, Executive Director, International IP, Global Intellectual Property Center, U S Chamber of Commerce said. 
 With increased penetration of technology and internet in India, piracy through online distribution is expected to continue to be a major source of revenue leakage if immediate steps are not taken to stem this flow of cash. Part of the issue is that legitimate means of digital viewing are still emerging in India. <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> came in late, and with not many Tier II and Tier III enjoying quality 4G coverage, downloading it using torrents or buying from a local DVD seller just seems easier. 
 “How to grow movie-goer base in the face of growing satellite penetration and piracy remains the bigger and more fundamental challenge”, Ajit Andhare, COO, <keyword id="1194637" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Viacom18-Motion-Pictures">Viacom18 Motion Pictures</keyword> observes. 
 
This parallel black economy is also hampering innovation. Flipkart’s online music store, Flyte had to shut down a little more than a year of its launch due to music piracy. Another website Dhingana had to shut down after a long struggle. Music Store, a chain of over 100 stores in India was also shut this year due to the effects of piracy. 
 
Truth is, even with the improvements in technology, not many business models and payment mechanisms have evolved to compete effectively with the ‘free’ illegal option. The Indian film industry is waking up to the prospect of optimizing the release window only now, and making it available across platforms. Not to mention the laggard implementation of existing anti-piracy rules. 
 
“We acknowledge the National IPR Policy as a step in the right direction to protect copyright as it envisages a creative and innovative India. However, thousands of rogue websites threaten the lifeline of a film, as soon as it is released in theatres. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Film+piracy&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Film piracy</a> creates financial loss to our business and to the exchequer”, Mr. Uday Singh, Managing Director at Motion Picture Association said. 
 
While the economic impacts of piracy are difficult to quantify, a recent market study by FICCI looked at seven industry sectors most impacted by counterfeiting, piracy and smuggling, and found almost Rs. 73,000 Crores in lost sales in 2012 across just these seven sectors. 
 
As a saving grace, select Premium HD Channels are offering TV content to the Indian audience 24 hours of its US telecast, but are getting few takers. Hungama offers Indian film content to 47 countries through partnerships with other companies. Free online music streaming sites like Gaana and Saavn are trying their best with branding exercises. 
 
However, till expediting blocking rogue sites, tracing locations, owners, release groups involved in copyright theft and cracking down on criminal syndicates involving notorious camcorders are not considered ‘first-aid’ to any case of copyright violation, it’s difficult. 
Till then, it’s plain madness out there.
