<ul><li>Ola and Uber asked to showcase their algorithms related to ride cancellations and surge pricing.</li><li>Order came after CCPA received numerous complaints of unfair trading practices.</li><li>According to a survey by LocalCircles, 71% of customers continue to face ride cancellation issues.</li></ul>As thousands of commuters find themselves at the mercy of Uber and Ola drivers via ride cancellations, cancellation charges, random surge pricing and long waiting times, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) was set to grill cab aggregators over their algorithms on Tuesday. The regulator, under its Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare, was set to ask cab-hailing platforms to showcase their algorithms related to ride cancellations and surge pricing, along with questioning them over other issues. The CCPA has received numerous complaints of unfair trading practices, such as cab drivers forcing riders to cancel trips that result in the customers paying the cancellation charge. The authority is of the view that old customers are being charged exorbitant rates while new riders are being wooed by low fares for the same distance. Despite the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020, 71 per cent customers say that ride cancellation issues by drivers continue, according to a survey by community-based social media platform LocalCircles last month. Over 45 per cent of app-based taxi consumers stated they were charged more than 1.5 times in surge pricing despite the threshold being set by the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020. The extortionist practices of some drivers to undertake private trips were reported by consumers as a major concern, the report said. As thousands of Indian riders continue to suffer from paying cancellation fees sans their faults, the ride-hailing major in Australia admitted that it made false or misleading statements in cancellation warning messages and taxi fare estimates, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Uber now faces $26 million (Australian dollars) in penalties for adopting those illegal practices. More than two million Australian consumers were shown the misleading cancellation warning. Envisioned to lessen the travel woes, cab-hailing platforms like Uber and Ola have come a long distance in India, but riders are increasingly facing more issues. Most of the time, Uber and Ola drivers ask the riders to reveal what fare the Uber app is showing, and then decide if they want to take the ride or not depending on the amount and if it is in cash, forcing the riders to cancel the ride. Indian regulator to grill Ola and Uber over rising customer complaints

<ul><li>Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a premium shared mobility service called Glyd. </li><li>The service – Glyd – will have only Mahindra’s Electric Vehicles in its fleet. </li><li>While it has been launched in Mumbai, it will soon move to other cities.</li></ul>Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a cab-hailing service called <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/technology/auto/mahindra-glyd-es-into-mumbais-app-based-taxi-business-to-rival-uber-ola-3580161.html">Glyd </a>for the office-going crowd. The service is powered by electric vehicles and will come as a new rival for companies like Uber and Ola in India. While the ownership is Mahindra’s, the fleet of 10 e-Veritos for now and drivers will be managed by a third party. The service has been launched in Mumbai and will expand to other Indian cities soon. The tech-based e-mobility service is designed for the office going crowd with features like web-conferencing along with curated entertainment and music content provided from partners. It also boasts of additional features like privacy screen, air purifier, wrap-around headrest among others. The services will be marketed as a “premium” service. "The company has from time to time provided innovative and first of its kind e-mobility solutions. Glyd is one such flagship premium e-mobility solution to redefine the in-commute experience of daily commuters," M&amp;M Managing Director Pawan Goenka said in a<a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/auto/mahindra-launches-electric-mobility-service-glyd-in-mumbai-10-e-veritos-flagged-off/story/322009.html"> statement.</a> India has seen a boom of mobility startups and services, led by the successful example of Ola. Uber and Ola have a new challenger in India – and it’s a large car maker

You must have by now heard about Ola and Uber planning to raise their fares. This comes as real bad news for all the commuters who had started relying heavily on Ola and Uber taxis for their daily commute, owing to their economical pricing over the exorbitant fares charged by local taxis and autos. However, it seems commute is going to be a big problem all over again. 
 
Both cab aggregators have announced they are increasing their prices in the lowest category of cabs - the bracket used mostly by the middle and upper- middle class commuters. 
 
In Delhi, where Ola was charging Rs 6 per km apart from the base fare of Rs 40 for its Micro cabs, it will now be charging almost double - Rs 12 per km after the first 20 km. 
 
Same is the case with Uber. In Delhi for instance, an UberGo commuter will now have to pay Rs 12 per km after the initial 20 km against Rs 6 per km they were paying before. 
 
In Pune, the cost has been fixed at Rs 15 per kilometre for UberGo rides beyond the first 15 km. For Vizag it’s Rs 12 per kilometre after first 15 km and for Kolkata, it is Rs 12 per km after first 10 km. 
 
Similarly the Ola commuters in Bangalore would also need to shell out Rs 12 per km as compared to Rs 6 all through the journey earlier. 
For Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, the fare scheme for Ola Micro is same as Bangalore. 
 
Both Ola and Uber have taken this move to earn profits, as per the news reports. However, this price war also poses the right opportunity for rivals like Meru Cabs to grab their share in the market. 
 
Interestingly, Meru is already giving discounts to customers. It has recently introduced Exactometer, a system where the rider needs to pay exactly the fare estimated before the start of the trip, to counter the disruptive fare rates of Ola and Uber. 
 
It remains to be seen how this steep fare hike will go down with customers, and who really will have the last laugh.

"A large number of users in small towns such as Jaipur and Kochi want to come on Uber but are more comfortable paying by cash. We have rolled out the option of cash payment in these cities. We may potentially roll out to bigger metros," Bhavik Rathod, general manager for Uber in Bangalore, told Economic Times. 
 
This move will also put Uber at par with other <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cab+services">cab services</a> like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ola">Ola</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=meru">Meru</a> Flexi, Mega Cabs and others who accept cash. 
The ‘cash’ option will be in the app itself. 
 
Uber drivers have been asked to load the cash wallets with change at all times, before accepting a ride, to avoid time wastage while looking for change.

Uber users can pay by cash in four more Indian cities now!

Couple of days back Delhi, the capital of India faced another rape incident. Unlike most instances, this case has been embroiled under the controversy of taxi-centric app called Uber. While many people are shouting at the top of their lungs that such apps should be banned (and the government heard them and banned Uber Delhi), but we seriously think this incident has not everything just related to the app. It is actually a wakeup call for all of us—it’s time when we should remind ourselves that technology has to be used wisely if we really want it to be a boon (not bane). Here is our take on what we think the government should really do to prevent such mishaps. 
 
All cabs need to be supremely governed 
Technology is there for our disposal, then why not use it. Implement GPS-trackers and track down cab drivers activity every single second. All cab service providers, be it private firms or public brands need to understand the importance of having a GPS tracker on the cars. If you’ve seen various cases of speed-car chase in the US, then it’s easy for car companies to keep a track of the driver and his position. Merely by installing an iPhone and relying thoroughly on its positioning service is just not done. The cost of GPS technology has come down, Internet infrastructure can also be relied upon—all that is required is that can service providers get the gear in place. 
 
Uber-like cases should be governed under law 
So, when the media approached Uber for its statement on the recent incident, the company basically stated that it does not have to comply with laws of a taxi-service company, as they never were one of those. Yes, it’s just an app that acts like a mediator between the taxi vendor and the nearest car available to the consumer. But surely, some laws can be implemented to make sure companies like Uber cannot evade the judicial governance. Make them accountable for their actions; put them through paces for cyber law and any other possible measures that can be taken. 
 
Driver IDs need full proof e-governance support 
If Narendra Modi has been serious about implementing e-governance in the country, then Driver’s ID mechanism could hugely get benefitted. Our country, sadly, is known for being the most corrupted, so why not take that reasoning out of equation by diverting the driver’s credentials, to a newer and complex set of database. This way, any driver plying on with the cab providers will be tested and judged for their professional experience only with information about any criminal record, work profile all included. Easier said than done. To get the house in order, some major steps are dearly needed from the government. 
 
More traffic and street CCTVs can help 
The importance of close-circuit camera TV has never been understood by the security forces in India. If fitted on street or traffic lights, they can easily capture the offender or even the offense in some cases which can help the law force prevent mishaps, even before it happens. `More than any help of technology, the society needs to change its mindset and not take law for granted. Cab-taking customers will never feel comfortable unless they get the right kind of support from all possible avenues.

New Delhi, Mar 12 () Indians left behind a variety of items in the Uber cabs last year, right from mobile phones to AC remote and even, acrylic artificial tooth, according to Uber's Lost &amp; Found India Index. Mumbai was the "most forgetful" city in terms of riders leaving behind their belongings, followed by Kolkata and Prayagraj. "Over the last year, we've seen objects including phones, cameras and bags top the list of items left in Ubers across India, followed by utility items like wallets, keys, clothing, and umbrellas in the top-10 most-forgotten item category," Uber said in a statement. Besides leaving the usuals behind, Indians also forgot things such as acrylic artificial tooth, mangoes, medical prescriptions, exam notes, kitchen tawa, teddy bear, broom, it added. Interestingly, Thursdays and Fridays emerged as days when riders left behind their belongings more in the cars. The data also showed that such incidents occured more in the afternoon rides (2 pm, 3 pm and 1 pm). "People are most likely to forget a guitar on Saturdays and Sundays, business card holder on Mondays and Fridays, and their lunch on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays," according to the data. Uber wants to kill the car, Uber Eats wants to kill the kitchen, Oyo wants to change the way you use hotels forever, and WeWork wants to transform office working as we know it.But given it's 2019, we're only a decade into this 300-year vision and it's a little hard to see how successfully SoftBank and its portfolio are bringing this radical change.To investigate, I spent a day living, working, and eating products from SoftBank-funded companies, to see if I could glean some insight into this vision of how we'll all live. Not all SoftBank-funded companies offer products in the UK, so I mostly stuck to using Uber, co-working space firm WeWork, hotel firm Oyo and workspace chat service Slack.I had a mixed experience.These are services that are evidently targeted at a generation used to being on their phones and instant convenience, but that seems to be the only unifying theme. It didn't always feel that convenient either - my Uber cab made me late and clearly wasn't the right transport choice for navigating busy London at rush hour.The same extends to Uber Eats. It's not meant for navigating you from one city to another, whereas Google Maps is more like a satnav replacement that can navigate long distances for you. Citymapper doesn't show driving directions.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">The Citymapper app</div></div></div>The company was founded out of London in 2010, and has raised around $50 million in venture capital backing. It has expanded to include other cities, such as New York, Barcelona, and Sydney, and there are 20 million people using the app, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-26/the-guy-making-public-transit-smarter">according to a Bloomberg report in 2018.</a>Citymapper is simple to use, is well-designed, extremely functional, and mostly does what it says. Unlike Uber, which is a pretend platform.By this I mean Citymapper is fairly agnostic about which transport method you take. Aside from showing you public transport options, it integrates ride-hailing services like Uber or Kapten into the app should you want to call a cab.In London, you can also hail a black taxi from inside the app. In Los Angeles, you can locate a Kick, Bird, or Lime scooter from inside the app.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Shona Ghosh/Business InsiderCitymapper's app shows LA users nearby Kick, Bird, and Lime scooters.</div></div></div>Google Maps has some similar integrations, but <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/06/google-maps-removes-uber-integration/">ended its Uber partnership last year</a>. In the UK, there doesn't seem to be any third-party services integrated into Maps, at least on the iPhone.Meanwhile, Uber wants to turn its app into <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/15/17340064/uber-ceo-dara-khosrowshahi-interview-elevate-flying-cars">a wider "multimodal" platform</a> that shows you all the different ways you can get around. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said last year in an interview with The Verge: "So the switch for me was Uber moving from being a giant global car-sharing platform moving to a global A-to-B urban mobility platform."Translation: I want more people to spend more money on Uber services, so I'm going to put all Uber services in one place and call it a "platform."Uber isn't going to become an agnostic transport provider, it just wants people to use its various services more regularly.The "platform" spin makes for a nice narrative to investors. A conspiracy theorist might also posit that Uber may plan to shift to Facebook's approach of referring to its "family" of services, as <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/31/facebook-will-move-to-reporting-aggregate-numbers-for-family-of-apps.html">a way of disguising any slowdown</a> in its core service.<h2>Uber's main app is horrible to use</h2>There is a second reason that Uber should look more closely at Citymapper, which is that Uber's main app is horrible to use for anything other than hailing a cab.I did an experiment last week, which involved <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-uber-oyo-what-like-living-on-softbank-companies-2019-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">living for a day on services funded by SoftBank's Vision Fund</a>.Given SoftBank has a $7.7 billion stake in Uber, this meant buying Uber Eats for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, taking an Uber cab to work, and then taking Uber Jump bikes to meetings.It showed me that Uber's app isn't particularly smart. It's fine for occasional use but if Uber wants to become the go-to transport app, which Khosrowshahi's comments imply, it needs to do a much, much better job.For example, I took Jump bikes to and from meetings. But when it came to looking at how much I had spent hiring these bikes, there was no way of seeing my journey history inside the app. By contrast, you can easily see recent journeys you've taken by Uber cab.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">ReutersAn Uber Jump bike.</div></div></div>The app also fines you if you hire a Jump bike and then leave it outside the designated parking zones. Again, there's no easy way to see inside the app where you can leave a bike without getting a fine. Uber acquired Jump last April and it's likely that work integrating the new service is still ongoing. But it isn't exactly a perfect transport app yet.Similarly, while the Uber app does integrate public transport options into its main app, it's not as sophisticated or as accurate as Citymapper.For example, Uber told me there were only two public transport routes between Business Insider's office and my house. I know there are actually four routes. Nor does Uber show how long it would take to walk to your destination because, for all its talk of killing the car, Uber doesn't really want you walk anywhere because that means less money for Uber.Uber also underestimated the price of the journey by public transport, seemingly showing me off-peak fares when I would be travelling at peak time.These are all relatively small fixes for a multibillion-dollar company, sure. But Citymapper has already nailed these details and has been doing the job better than Uber for years.As for Citymapper, an Uber investment might be more appealing than an outright acquisition.<h2>It's never been clear how Citymapper will make money</h2>Citymapper has dabbled abortively in "smart buses" and <a href="https://citymapper.com/news/1800/introducing-the-citymapper-smartbus">spoken vaguely</a> about selling a "software stack" to public transport providers. The company does, after all, have detailed information on people's commuting habits and that must be valuable to someone. The smart bus experiment was canned, however, thanks to regulatory issues.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Rob Price/BICitymapper's aborted bus experiment.</div></div></div>Citymapper also briefly <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/7a798068-1664-11e8-9e9c-25c814761640">tried running its own Uber rival</a>. This made even less sense and lasted for about 18 months.Citymapper CEO Azmat Yusuf blamed rules and regulation for the failed experiments. He <a href="https://sifted.eu/articles/citymapper-pass-bus/">told tech publication Sifted this month</a> that the firm might have been better off testing in a less developed country."I think if you're going to invent the responsive bus, you might have to go to an emerging market, do it without any constraints, and prove it in some way," Yusuf said, according to Sifted.The read here is that Citymapper still hasn't really come up with a viable way of making money. Or if it has, it hasn't told anyone yet. An external, deep-pocketed investor with links to mega-funder SoftBank might prove a lifeline.Citymapper's next grand experiment is a kind of catch-all travel pass that includes public transport, cab rides, and bike hire. The company is currently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/customers-citymapper-pass-overcharged-unhappy-2019-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">experimenting with the pass in London</a>, but there have been complaints of poor customer service, shipping delays, and mysterious extra costs.Where Citymapper is going with this revenue-wise is not entirely clear, but Uber is thinking along similar lines. Uber, the cab aggregator service from San Francisco, is all set to bring <keyword id="2960214" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ubereats">UberEATS</keyword> in India in the second quarter of the year, and has already started bringing restaurant partners on board.

On-demand food aggregator industry in India is currently seeing its major companies, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/swiggy-reveals-what-people-are-eating-in-indian-cities/articleshow/56755802.cms">Swiggy </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/march-saw-zomato-processing-2-million-online-orders-with-23-mom-growth/articleshow/57942655.cms">Zomato</a>, looking to strengthen their businesses with additional capital. Not only this, Google has also launched its hyperlocal services and food delivery app Areo, operational in Bengaluru and Mumbai, which passes on the leads from customers to partners like Faaso's, Freshmenu, and UrbanClap etc. 
 
UberEATS will have a different team from the one managing Uber cabs at national and city levels. The hiring for city general managers, city-level restaurant operations managers as well as branding and sales heads across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai and Gurugram has already begun.

Manan Javeri, who joined Uber after leaving McKinsey in 2015, is heading the India launch. 
 
UberEATS began in Los Angeles in 2014 and is currently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Youll-have-to-pass-all-these-tests-to-land-a-job-working-on-Ubers-food-delivery-service/articleshow/55433947.cms">operational in 62 cities</a> across the globe.
