This could mean around two to three tablespoons of yogurt or kefir, or 30 grams of aged cheese, she said.</p><p>There's compelling evidence to suggest that eating multiple servings of fermented foods daily can be beneficial for gut health.</p><p>A 2021 study from Stanford University found that people who ate around six servings of fermented foods a day for 10 weeks had increased microbiome diversity compared to those who ate a high-fiber diet. They also had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anti-inflammatory-recipes-nutritionist-healthy-easy-meals-2024-5">reduced inflammation</a> biomarkers.</p><div type="image" title="A bowl of yogurt" height="1414" width="2121" msid="111022747" hostid="261" sizebytes="344614"></div><h2 id="3aec3f2d-00ad-4235-af85-46fa0bd15778">Eat a variety of fermented foods</h2><p>It's also important to eat a variety of different fermented foods, Miah said, because the gut microbiome thrives on diversity.</p><p>"We still haven't discovered all the secrets of the microbiome yet. But one of the things we know for sure is our gut microbiome loves diversity," Miah said.</p><p>Eating plant-based foods, probiotic foods, and prebiotic foods, which are found in plants like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, leads to a more diverse microbiome with more types of beneficial bacteria, she said.</p><h2 id="7e15a76d-ec07-4f84-bbca-624c363e8cbd">Buy locally and check labels</h2><p>Due to the explosion of the gut-health trend, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha are now available at most grocery stores. But oftentimes, they're mass-produced and contain far more ingredients than you might realize, Miah said. </p><p>"They lose some of that goodness in the processing and batch production," she added.</p><p>Some might even be considered ultra-processed foods (UPFs) because they contain five or more ingredients, including some you wouldn't find in a regular kitchen. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ultra-processed-foods-health-problems-study-2024-2">UPFs are linked to many health problems</a> and typically contain little fiber and few nutrients, meaning they're not particularly nourishing for the microbiome.</p><p>Miah recommended buying locally-made fermented foods when possible or checking the nutritional labels of products in the store before buying them. </p><p>"Go to a local market or a farmer's market or something like that," she said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The USDA updated its map of plant hardiness zones for the first time in over a decade.</li><li>The new map shows that half the country has shifted to warmer zones. </li></ul><p>The USDA has updated its plant hardiness zone map for the first time in over 10 years. The new map could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/gardening-qurantine-financial-independence-more-than-money-2020-8">change how you garden</a>.</p><p>Gardening consultant, Megan London, for example, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2023/11/17/1213600629/-it-feels-like-im-not-crazy-gardeners-arent-surprised-as-usda-updates-key-map">NPR</a> she's now considering growing an array of new treats including kumquats and mandarin oranges in her gardens in central Arkansas.</p><p>According to the new map, central Arkansas shifted half a zone up from zone 7b to zone 8a since the USDA last updated its map in 2012.</p><h2>What are plant zones?</h2><p>The USDA's map is the national standard that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/home/gardening-tools-for-beginners">lets gardeners and growers know</a> what types of perennial plants — plants that return year after year — are most likely to thrive in certain locations. The map categorizes these locations by zones and half zones, <a target="_blank" href="https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/">the USDA said on its website</a>.</p><p>The US is divided into 13 growing zones. Each zone represents the average lowest winter temperature an area typically sees every year, per the <a target="_blank" href="https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/pages/how-to-use-the-maps">USDA</a>.</p><p>A good chunk of southern Florida, for example, is zone 10b (35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit) while northern Montana has pockets of zone 3b (-35 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit).</p><p>Many plants native to the US are equipped to survive in a wide range of zones, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bhg.com/gardening/gardening-by-region/how-to-use-hardiness-zone-information/">Better Homes &amp; Gardens</a>. Some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bhg.com/gardening/flowers/perennials/tough-perennials-that-grow-in-dry-shade/">ferns and grasses</a> can thrive in zones 4 through 9, for example.</p><p>"This is all about winter cold, this map," Chris Daly, director of the PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University, told Business Insider. "It has nothing to do with planting zones in terms of when you plant or what can survive the summer." He helped develop the map along with the USDA.</p><h2><strong>Half of the US has shifted to warmer plant zones</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Two maps on top of each other showing the 2023 (above) and 2012 USDA 'plant hardiness' zones in the Southeastern US" height="1080" width="1440" msid="105369399" hostid="261"></div><p>The new map for 2023 has pushed half the country into a warmer half zone, while the rest of the country has remained in the same zone, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ars.usda.gov/news-events/news/research-news/2023/usda-unveils-updated-plant-hardiness-zone-map/">the USDA said in a press release</a>.</p><p>With the latest map update, some areas of Omaha, Nebraska <a target="_blank" href="https://lancaster.unl.edu/hort/mastergardener/resources/NE%20USDA%20Plan%20Hardiness%20Zone%20Map.pdf"><u>have moved</u></a> from 5b to 6a. Meaning that the average lowest winter temperature for that region rose from between -15 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit to -10 to -5 degrees Fahrenheit.</p><p>When Kim Todd, a professor and extension landscape specialist, arrived at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/kim-todd-478b5851/"><u>late 1970s</u></a>, the area was a zone 4. "We are now zone 6a on this current map," she said.</p><p>In the decades since, "we have actually changed winter cold averages by 20 degrees," she said. "That's huge."</p><div type="image" title="Two maps on top of each other showing the 2023 (above) and 2012 USDA 'plant hardiness' zones in the Northeastern US" height="3000" width="3000" msid="105369402" hostid="261"></div><p>As a result, some plants that she used to reliably recommend as a landscape architect have problems with higher temperatures. "We're seeing firs, as an example, that really like those cooler zones really struggle with the winter warmth and desiccation, the winds, the dryness," Todd said.</p><p>On the flip side, non-native plants that used to die off during Nebraska winters now have a chance to take hold. One example is Callery pears, which are fast-growing and detrimental to some grasses and other species. "For years, those ornamental pears either did not produce a viable seed or any seed at all," Todd said. That's changing now.</p><p>There are also implications for crops with the changing zones, Todd said. But that doesn't mean growers will need to look at non-native species, Todd said.</p><p>"We do suggest people take a look at natives first," Todd said. A good first step is to look at the zone designations nurseries and sellers put on seed packets or plant tags.</p><p>But, Todd said, local weather stations and university extension programs may give growers more targeted information about what plants work best in their microclimate. "An individual plan in the wrong location may or may not thrive," Todd said.</p><p>Growers should also be cautious about relying solely on the zones, Jonathan Foster, a horticulture outreach professional, wrote on The University of Maine's <a target="_blank" href="https://extension.umaine.edu/gardening/manual/usda-plant-hardiness-zone-map/">Maine Gardner Manual</a> site.</p><h2>Limitations of the USDA's new plant zone map</h2><p>"The map is a guideline, not a guarantee," Foster wrote, and plants can thrive in several zones. However, you'll want to consider other factors, like summer temperatures and soil quality as well. The map doesn't reflect these nuances.</p><div type="image" title="Two maps on top of each other showing the 2023 (above) and 2012 USDA 'plant hardiness' zones in the Southwestern US" height="1080" width="1440" msid="105369404" hostid="261"></div><p>Foster also noted that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/home/houseplant-care-products">more delicate plants</a>, like poppies, might not fare as well as hardier trees and shrubs in snowy climates like Maine.</p><p>The map is also limited in how detailed it can get, Daly said. Your garden might get more sun than your neighbors or have shadier spots thanks to trees. "Those may have microclimates that are warmer or colder than what the zone says that you are," Daly said.</p><h2>What caused half the US to shift to a warmer zone?</h2><p>The USDA said that the shift to warmer zones is "not necessarily reflective of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-crisis-comedians-jokes-drive-change-2023-11">global climate change</a>," because several factors contributed to the changes.</p><div type="image" title="Side-by-side maps showing the 2023 (left) and 2012 USDA 'plant hardiness' zones in the Northwestern US" height="720" width="1440" msid="105369405" hostid="261"></div><p>Daly and the USDA used data from 1991 to 2020 and chose the coldest night of the year. "We only have 30 numbers that we're averaging together," Daly said. That's why it's important to look at decades of data, he added.</p><p>The temperature on the coldest night can shift for a variety of reasons aside from climate change. One year might not have a cold snap, and the next winter's could be particularly harsh, Daly said.</p><p>The new map is also based on information from thousands more weather stations, according to the USDA. It pulled data from 13,412 weather stations compared to 7,983 for the 2012 map, per the USDA's press release.</p><p>Daly developed Prism, the software that created the map. "It's really good at reproducing the effects of features on the Earth's surface, such as mountains, valleys, and coastlines, on climatic patterns," he said. It helped make the map more detailed and accurate than previous versions.</p><p>It's also interactive. "You can enter your zip code or you can click anywhere in the map and zoom and pan on it and see what your zone is," Daly said.</p><h2>How climate change is influencing plant hardiness zones</h2><p>In the grand scheme of things, climate change is influencing where plants can grow, Daly said.</p><div type="image" title="Side-by-side maps showing the 2023 (above) and 2012 USDA 'plant hardiness' zones in the South Central US" height="720" width="1440" msid="105369407" hostid="261"></div><p>"We know for a fact that average temperatures are rising due to climate change. There's no doubt about that," Daly said. "And I think over the long term, this should cause plant hardiness zones to gradually shift northward."</p><p>Todd said she hoped the changing zones wouldn't deter people from planting gardens or trees.</p><p>"This is not the first time that we have seen a change in hardiness or a change in climate or wind patterns or anything else, and it certainly won't be the last," she said. "To be the best stewards we can under the situation that we're dealing with, I think, is our best approach."</p>

The texture was definitely chewy, and it was strange to eat it un-toasted and without any spread. </p><h2><strong>This bagel was just fine, even with butter and cream cheese</strong></h2><p>The toasted sesame-seed bagel with butter was fine if a little flavorless. It was slightly better with cream cheese, but it still left an off-putting aftertaste.</p><p>I think this bagel would work well as part of a breakfast sandwich, but regular old spreads didn't do it for me. </p><h2><strong>The green-chile bagel was way too spicy for me</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Green Chile 1.JPG" height="2505" width="3340" msid="78921691" hostid="261"></div><p>From the first bite, I noticed how soft the texture was, which was quite different from the chewier ones I'd eaten so far. The second thing I noticed, was <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-spicy-fast-food-chains-items-2019-7">how incredibly spicy</a> this bagel was.</p><p>I like a little heat, but this was really overwhelming. </p><h2><strong>Cream cheese helped, but this was still too spicy for my taste buds</strong></h2><p>Once I toasted this bagel, the cheese flavor came through a little more.</p><p>With just butter, this bagel was still very spicy. However, I mostly just tasted spinach. </p><p>I like spinach but this was a little much — I think this could use more cheese or garlic.</p><h2><strong>Toasting this bagel brought out its cheesy flavor</strong></h2><p>I really enjoyed the texture of the toasted spinach-Florentine bagel. It reminded me of a cannoli.</p><p>Butter, on the other hand, was a weird addition. Despite that, I think this bagel would definitely taste better with some type of spread.</p><h2><strong>The bagel stayed soft, even after toasting</strong></h2><p>Even after toasting, this bagel still had a nice, soft texture. </p><p>At first, the cream cheese tasted a little weird, but then it mellowed out to a better flavor. I tried every bagel from Einstein Bros. Bagels, and the best ones were sweet

You eagerly braced yourself for the impact of powerful seasonings to crash over your taste buds, only to find it's still lacking in flavor. That disappointment right there is the result of faded spices and the top reason to label the open dates on spices and replace them on a semi-regular basis.</p><p>Chefs suggest changing out your spices every eight months, but let's be honest: That's costly and you don't cook with every member of your collection frequently enough to use up a bottle in that short of time. When store properly, it's possible to extend the life of your spices beyond that time period, but first it's important to understand why spices lost flavor.</p><h2><strong>What causes spices to fade?</strong></h2><p>The clock starts ticking long before spices reach your pantry. "Most spices take several years to get from the farm to your supermarket shelf, so the flavors are already faded before you even open the jar," says Ethan Frisch, co-founder of <a href="https://www.burlapandbarrel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Burlap &amp; Barrel</a>. On top of that, "a slow supply chain, poor storage conditions, and the process of grinding whole spices into powder all cause the flavors to fade over time."</p><p>Frisch recommends "buying spices from small companies who specialize in better, faster supply chains and sourcing spices directly from the origin."</p><p>Although they're considered shelf-stable products, dried ground and whole herbs and spices react to the air around us. Every time they're opened, they oxidize and degrade, weakening both the aromas and the colors. And as the scent and vibrancy loses potency, so does the flavor. It does so quietly, until one dreadful day, the dish that you're making comes out lackluster and dull.</p><p><strong>Quick tip: </strong>Keep herbs and spices in containers with good seals - preferably glass or ceramic - in a cool, dark corner of your kitchen to extend shelf life.</p><h2><strong>Do spices go bad?</strong></h2><p>As with many foods, printed dates are not about expiration, but rather about quality. "The sell-by date on spices is an arbitrary number, only connected to the date that the spices were packed into jars and not related at all to the date the spices were harvested," says Frisch. That said, there are general guidelines for whole and ground spices, herbs, seeds, and extracts and how long they stay in their best condition.</p><h2>Shelf life of herbs and spices</h2><ul><li><strong>Whole spices: </strong>Grinding your own spices not only provides more exuberant flavors, but whole spices last longer as well. Because there's less surface area exposed, individual whole spices can last for as long as four whole years. This category includes peppercorns, coriander, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon sticks, lemongrass, and even whole dried chili peppers.</li><li><strong>Whole seeds: </strong>A subcategory of whole spices, these include ingredients like poppy, sesame, or caraway seeds. Unlike spices, they can actually go "bad" since the oils in seeds can go rancid. Lastly, while other spices and herbs are perfectly happy sitting in a dark corner of your pantry or a cabinet, seeds can benefit from being kept chilled without adverse effects to taste or texture. Hard dry seeds (mustard, fennel, cumin, etc.) can last in the pantry for up to three years, but more moist ones, like raw sesame seeds, max out at a year.</li><li><strong>Ground spices: </strong>These are the convenient, pre-milled versions of whole spices, including black pepper, dried chili flakes, and spice blends. They're best within three months of being bottled, but will stay in peak form for at least two, even three years if kept well. Ground spices have more surface area and oxidize faster than their whole counterparts.</li><li><strong>Dried herbs: </strong>Within this category are your leafy seasonings - basil, oregano, thyme, and anything else that used to be a green plant. This also includes herb blends. Spices may be present in them, but if they're more green than any other color, count them as an herb, which will remain reliable for one to three years if they're not fading in light.</li><li><strong>Extracts:</strong> When most folks think of extracts, they think of the sweeter ones commonly used in baking: vanilla, lemon, almond, maple, even mint. However, extracts can include flavors that range from liquid smoke to herbs and spices, such as ginger. They're great to have on hand to enhance or spark new life into tired herbs and spices and will take two to three years before fading. Vanilla lasts even longer - it's shelf life is typically listed as "indefinite."</li></ul><h2><strong>How to extend the life of spices</strong></h2><p>But not to fear - the lifespan of your precious spices can be surprisingly long when stored properly. By that, we mean:</p><ul><li>Airtight, as contact with oxygen lessens its potency</li><li>Away from moisture, which will cause clumping and caking</li><li>Out of direct sunlight and heat, which will leech color</li></ul><p>To reduce their exposure to air, make sure to close lids tightly and immediately whenever you use them. It's tempting to leave the jars open if you think you might need some more, but those extra few minutes give oxygen and moisture more chances to do their damage. Also avoid dumping spices directly into your <keyword id="27178" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="cooking">cooking</keyword>, which allows steam to get into your jars. Moisture creates an environment for mold, which - aside from rancidity of oily spices - is the only way spices go truly "bad." </p><p>Frisch's opts to store whole spices in individual pepper grinders so that he can grind them fresh directly into <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> as he needs them. "I also have a dedicated electric coffee grinder that I use to grind larger spices and to make my own spice blends." Tools like the battery-operated <a href="https://www.finamill.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FinaMill</a> makes it even easier with interchangeable refillable pods so you don't need to clean up between grinds.</p><p><strong>Quick tip: </strong>Keep herbs and spices away from the stovetop. While it may be convenient to have them at hand's reach, prolonged contact with heat will cause the spices' flavors to dissipate.</p><h2><strong>Can I get sick from expired spices?</strong></h2><p>This answer is usually no. Herbs and spices are tremendously shelf-stable and "old" ones typically won't impact your well-being. The exception would be if you find mold in the container. If that's the case, it hasn't been stored right, has captured moisture, and is now contaminated. Toss this immediately. </p><h2><strong>How to salvage old spices</strong></h2><p>There are two ways to revive or breathe new life to lackluster spices. Fry them in hot oil right before cooking, so the heat can unlock the remaining essence of the spice, which then infuses the oil with its flavors and aromas. A gentle toast in a constantly-stirred, medium-low heated skillet is another great way to use heat to perk up a whole bottle of old ground spices. All of the goods with face a 10% duty until the start of 2019, when the tariffs will jump to 25%.</p><p>While the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-trade-war-wilbur-ross-tariff-price-increase-2018-9">Trump administration is downplaying</a> the effect of the tariffs, many economists expect prices for these goods will increase once the tariffs are officially imposed on September 24.</p><p>The new list of goods that will be subject to the tariffs was released by the US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer's office on Monday.</p><p>The final list is notably different from the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-tariff-full-list-of-goods-products-2018-6">previous round of tariffs</a> on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, because there are consumer products on the list. The previous round focused <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-trade-war-prices-go-up-2018-4">almost exclusively on industrial equipment</a> and machinery, while the new round includes items like hats, TVs, and food.</p><p>There were 297 items removed from the USTR's initial list, released in July, after the public comment period</p><p>Those include:</p><ul><li>Certain consumer electronics including smartwatches and bluetooth devices</li><li>Certain industrial chemicals used for manufacturing textiles</li><li><span>Certain health and safety products including bicycle helmets</span></li><li><span>Certain types of child safety furniture including high chairs and car seats</span></li></ul><p><span>The USTR did not specify how it determined which products to remove beyond assertions that the official followed an inter-agency procedure and listened to feedback from businesses. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-trade-tariffs-apple-products-cloud-industry-2018-9?r=UK&amp;IR=T">smartwatch removal drew interest</a> after it was revealed that Apple, makers of the Apple Watch, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2018/09/18/trumps-tariffs-wont-bite-apple-illustrating-tim-cooks-political-sway/">directly lobbied the White House</a>.</span></p><p><span>Even with the removals, 5,745 full or partial tariff lines are included on the final list that represent roughly $200 billion worth of Chinese imports.</span></p><p><span>Here's a breakdown of the major categories included in the list:</span></p><ul><li><strong>Meat:</strong><span>&#xa0;</span>pork; Then on <span>December 26, 2018, they finally reached it.</span></p><p>To explore the <span>50-foot-deep subglacial </span>lake, researchers from a project called <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiUybigyPffAhUMk1kKHf82AugQFjAAegQIChAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fsalsa-antarctica.org%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1dOxnlKuDBPcdBLeZTfJvK">SALSA (Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access)</a> had to bore a tiny hole nearly 1 kilometer into the ice. They did this using a drill with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scientists-in-antarctica-drilled-thousands-of-feet-into-lost-lake-2019-1">pencil-sized nozzle</a> that sprays heated water. Once the hole was made, they then used a corer tool to pull samples back to the surface. </p><p>The team anticipated finding microbial lifeforms in those samples - and they did - but they were surprised by what else was lurking in the mud. The samples also contained carcasses of tiny crustaceans (creatures smaller than a poppy seed) and the body of a tardigrade, a type of <span>eight-legged invertebrate known for its ability to withstand the very harshest conditions.</span></p><h2>A surprise in the mud</h2><p>The SALSA team wound up extracting a<span> 5.5-foot-long core (the longest ever from a subglacial lake) along with <a href="https://salsa-antarctica.org/2019/01/07/salsa-celebrates-successful-mission-at-mercer-subglacial-lake/">"six out of six 'perfect' sediment cores."</a> They also filled six 10-liter bottles with lake water and captured the first-ever footage of the lake. The fruits of their labor were</span><span> transported back to McMurdo Ice Station for analysis, according to the <a href="https://salsa-antarctica.org/2019/01/07/salsa-celebrates-successful-mission-at-mercer-subglacial-lake/">SALSA project's blog</a>.</span></p><p><span>When the researchers discovered the bodies of tiny crustaceans and a tardigrade in the samples, Priscu was so surprised that he thought the finding was a mistake. He was convinced that the cores had been contaminated, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00106-z">Nature reported</a>. So he had the team thoroughly re-clean their equipment and take more samples. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c41ead60f2d9b5bdb6d9a85-1655/lake mercer antarctica.jpg" border="0" alt="lake mercer antarctica" style="color: #000000;" data-mce-source="SALSA Antarctica/Facebook" data-mce-caption="Al Gagnon (left) and SALSA Marine Techs Michael Tepper-Rasmussen and Jack Greenberg (center and right) test the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Gravity Corer used to collect 10-foot and 20-foot sediment cores from Mercer Subglacial Lake." /><p class="source"><span>SALSA Antarctica/Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">Al Gagnon (left) and SALSA Marine Techs Michael Tepper-Rasmussen and Jack Greenberg (center and right) test the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Gravity Corer used to collect 10-foot and 20-foot sediment cores from Mercer Subglacial Lake.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>When the new samples came back, there they were: more crustacean shells. </span><span>Nothing like this had ever been found under an ice sheet before. </span></p><p><span>Lake Mercer is the second <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-subglacial-lake-has-been-found-beneath-antarcticas-ice-2016-4">subglacial lake</a> that scientists have accessed - they also drilled 2,600 feet down to reach the nearby <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/burried-antarctic-lake-shows-first-signs-of-life-2013-1">Lake Whillans in 2013</a>, but the samples taken there showed no signs of higher lifeforms (just microbes).</span></p><p><span>Microbial life most likely exists in this mud under the ice because an ocean covered the area about one million years ago, SALSA's chief scientist, John Priscu, <a href="https://www.axios.com/scientists-find-life-in-lake-buried-deep-underneath-antarctic-ice-e1b63387-43de-45d0-aeb5-a38eef375cae.html">told Axios</a>. But that doesn't explain the origin of the carcasses. </span></p><p><span>Instead, the discovery suggests that these crustaceans and tardigrades once lived on the continent; somehow, they were transported to the lake from nearby mountains (<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00106-z">where such creatures have been found before</a>). Moving water could have carried them, or a glacier may have dragged them as it advanced, <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00106-z">according to Nature</a>. </span></p><h2><span>How to reach a lake under the ice</span></h2><p>Subglacial Antarctica is an interstate of waterworks.</p><p>Streams and rivers connect hundreds of bodies of water underneath the ice, and this network has changed over the course of Antarctica's history. Understanding how the continent's ice responds to changes in Earth's climate helps scientists understand more about its history.</p><p>"Antarctica is the place on Earth least touched by humans, and as such it's an amazing laboratory to understanding life and biodiversity, and our planet's glacial history," Ross Virginia, director of Dartmouth College's Institute of Arctic Studies, told Business Insider.</p><p>Plus, studying Antarctic waterways is a crucial way to keep tabs on the potential consequences of global warming. </p><p>"The evolution of ice sheets and ice shelves are major controllers of sea-level rise," Virginia said.</p><p>But researching Antarctica's subglacial systems is incredibly difficult.</p><p><span>Virginia has been working on and off in Antarctica's Dry Valleys for close to 30 years, and has worked with Priscu on other Antarctic research projects. Drilling in these environments, he said, requires the same kind of care that NASA takes when exploring new worlds in space -</span><span> "like quarantining astronauts coming back from the moon or maintaining sterile equipment." </span></p><p>This is because contamination can easily ruin costly and important research, or even lead scientists to think they've discovered a type of life that's not actually there. </p><p>"We're always concerned with contamination," Victoria said. Even though the hole they drilled was no more than 60 centimeters wide, the researchers were able to slide that corer down the nearly 1-kilometer-long chute. After it hit the sediment below, the corer - and the lake mud it grabbed - were pulled back to the surface.</p><h2>Paving the way for drilling in other extreme environments</h2><p>Because the drilling operation was so difficult and complex, the SALSA project could offer lessons for pursuing research in other extreme environments, perhaps even those on other other planets.</p><p>Drilling in Antarctica is about as close as scientists can get to understanding what it would take to drill into the liquid ocean on Jupiter's moon Europa, Mark Skidmore, a professor of Earth sciences at Montana State University <a href="https://www.axios.com/scientists-find-life-in-lake-buried-deep-underneath-antarctic-ice-e1b63387-43de-45d0-aeb5-a38eef375cae.html">told Axios</a>.</p><p>Experts think Europa's oceans are one of the most likely places to find extraterrestrial life in our solar system.</p><p>"We're learning about the types of technologies and processes and how you'd go about doing it, and learning about what you'd find in those types of environments," Skidmore told Axios.</p><p>But drilling under Antarctica benefits us on Earth, too </p><p>Virginia's biggest concern is that the large floating ice sheets that extend from Antarctica's continental margins are melting from underneath thanks to warming water. It feels different from the other keys.&#xa0;</p><p>At least, that's how it sometimes feels on my new MacBook Pro. I've wondered if a single poppy seed got stuck under my space bar.</p><p>It's entirely possible it's my fault - I have been known <a href="https://www.wired.com/2013/08/clean-your-laptop-keyboard/">to use a dirty keyboard</a>. Regardless, it's extremely annoying. (The space bar is the the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-the-three-most-popular-keys-on-a-keyboard-2013-7">most-used key</a> on the keyboard.)</p><p>Here's how <a href="https://theoutline.com/post/2402/the-new-macbook-keyboard-is-ruining-my-life">The Outline described the problem</a> in a post that kicked off a wave of people saying that they have the problem too:&#xa0;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"A piece of dust is capable of rendering a butterfly switch nonfunctional. The key won't click, and it won't register whatever command it's supposed to be typing. It's effectively dead until someone can either shake loose the debris trapped under it or blow at the upside-down keyboard Nintendo-cartridge style."</p><p>There's even a parody song about the problem:&#xa0;</p><h2>Apple's solution is absurd&#xa0;</h2><p>Of course, lots of computers have problems. Other non-Apple keyboards can have issues, too. In many cases, people with the most basic computer fixing skills can pop a traditional key off a keyboard to solve the issue.&#xa0;</p><p>Not so with Apple's new "butterfly keyboard" on the MacBook and MacBook Pro. I have no idea how big the particle is that's under my space bar that's causing the problem - and I did feel pretty silly holding my laptop like that.</p><p>So now, according to Apple, my only option is to visit an Apple store or authorized service provider, which, as The Outline reported, could decide the fix is to charge me hundreds of dollars and replace the computer's entire "top case." Or, I could keep mashing the space bar and hope the problem works itself out, saving myself money, time, and the possibility that I have to send my expensive laptop away for service.&#xa0;</p><p>Apple's designs can be beautiful, and its network of stores makes getting quality service for a computer easy. I certainly don't have the expertise to fix most problems with Apple products, and I like how thin my new MacBook Pro is. Still, this is a frustrating problem because a keyboard is the kind of physical interface that you would think requires just a small fix. Keyboards are touched by human fingers all the time.</p><p>I hope that when Apple redesigns its keyboard once again, it will include user repair as a design priority.&#xa0;</p><p><em>Have this problem or know how to fix it?
