<ul class="summary-list"><li>Shares of <keyword id="10701757" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tyme-technologies">Tyme Technologies</keyword> soared as much as 127% on Wednesday.</li><li>The company was granted additional patent claims for its product TYME-19 which can be used to treat <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword>.</li><li>"We believe that TYME-19 diminishes the ability of COVID-19 to hijack an infected cell," the company wrote in a statement.</li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tyme-stock">Tyme Technologies</a> skyrocketed as much as 127% on Wednesday after the <a href="https://tymeinc.com/investors/press-releases/press-release-details/2021/TYME-Granted-U.S.-Patent-Claims-Covering-Use-of-TYME-19-to-Treat-COVID-19-Infections/default.aspx">company announced</a> the US Patent and Trademark Office granted additional patent claims for their product TYME-19-a metabolomic technology directed at treating COVID-19.</p><p>As an emerging biotechnology company, <keyword id="10701756" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tyme">Tyme</keyword> Technologies usually focuses on developing treatments for advanced cancers through its cancer metabolism-based therapies called CMBTs™.</p><p>However, when the pandemic struck, the company refocused some of its efforts to developing treatments that might help fight the COVID-19 virus. Now the US patent and Trademark Office has granted Tyme US Patent No. 10,905,698 to do just that.</p><p>However, the company still has multiple steps to navigate before the treatment will be available to the public.  </p><p>The clinical-stage <keyword id="45082" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="biotech">biotech</keyword> firm's TYME-19 metabolomic technology remains an "investigational compound" that is not approved in the US for any disease treatment at this time.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gamestop-wallstreetbets-reddit-trader-mania-populist-movement-occupy-wall-street-2021-1?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingestgest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The GameStop mania driven by Reddit traders isn't simple market trolling. The technology works to limit cellular metabolism, constraining viral replication.</p><p>"We believe that TYME-19 diminishes the ability of COVID-19 to hijack an infected cell," the company wrote in a statement. "TYME intends to initiate the appropriate clinical trials to substantiate the safety and efficacy of TYME-19."</p><p>Due to its status as a clinical-stage biotech company, Tyme <a href="https://tymeinc.com/investors/press-releases/press-release-details/2020/TYME-Provides-Business-Update-and-Announces-Second-Quarter-Fiscal-2021-Financial-and-Operating-Results/default.aspx">didn't post revenues</a> in 2020, but the company has a strong pipeline of upcoming therapies and plenty of cash to burn for now with $19.4 million in cash and cash equivalents at the end of the September quarter.</p><p>Tyme traded up 90%, at $3.46 per share, as of 2:49 PM EST on Wednesday.</p>

Tyme Technologies skyrockets 120% after securing new patent claims for Covid-19 infection fighting technology

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Addison Lee</span></p><p class="caption">Addison Lee CEO Andy Boland.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Addison Lee, a London-headquartered minicab company owned by private equity firm The Carlyle Group, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired US rival Flyte Tyme.</p><p>The deal was worth $25 million (£20 million), according to a source that is familiar with the acquisition.</p><p>Founded in 1979, Flyte Tyme has a turnover of $65 million (£53 million) and 425 vehicles in its fleet, Addison Lee said. It operates across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Los Angeles.</p><p>Addison Lee said that the acquisition will bring its North American revenues to $100 million (£81 million). It did not reveal the exact value of the deal.</p><p>Andy Boland, CEO of Addison Lee, which was founded in Battersea, London, in 1975, described the deal as an "important moment for the car industry."</p><p>Addison Lee has appointed Timothy Rose, the CEO of Flyte Tyme Worldwide Transportation, to run its business in North America.</p><p>"We feel that Addison Lee and Flyte Tyme are a perfect match, since both firms strive to provide and deliver the highest quality ground transportation in their respective marketplaces," said Rose in a statement. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Gen Z is growing disinterested in the extravagant brand trips influencers are sent on.</li><li>As a generation, they favor authenticity and ethical consumption over affluence and consumerism.</li></ul><p>Gen Z is tired of seeing influencers sent on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/im-beauty-influencer-attended-several-brand-trips-what-ive-learned-2023-5">extravagant brand trips</a>.</p><p>The generation that has grown up with social media says the lavish lifestyles of the internet's rich and famous no longer thrill them.</p><p>And affluence, it seems, just doesn't represent what they aspire to anymore.</p><p>"They value authenticity, sustainability, ethical consumption," Katya Varbanova, a social media marketer and content creator, told Business Insider.</p><p>"And some of these trips symbolize the disconnect between the brands they support and their personal values."</p> <h2>Tarte brand trips are famed in the influencer world</h2><p>For years, brand trips have been a way to solidify a company's name among the young people who watch YouTube and scroll TikTok and Instagram.</p><p>None have taken advantage of this as much as Tarte.</p><p>The makeup brand has been sending influencers to tropical destinations since 2013 with its #TrippinWithTarte series. In the early years, it paid off, with certain items like its "Shape Tape" concealer reaching icon status in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-beauty-youtube-is-full-of-drama-and-scandals-2019-5">the beauty YouTube community</a>.</p><p>But Tarte's trips have also become notorious over time, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tarte-apologizes-brand-trip-formula-1-tiktoker-felt-second-tier-2023-5">allegations of racial bias and unfair treatment</a> and on-lookers labeling them a "turn-off" and "out of touch."</p><p>Tarte's founder and CEO, Maureen Kelly told BI in an email the company has "always believed in the power of genuine connections over flashy advertising," and rather than spending millions on ads, they "invest in relationships."</p><p>"For nearly a decade, we've been organizing trips, constantly reinventing them to bring our community closer together," she said.</p><p>This month, Tarte flew a group of social media stars to Bora Bora on private jets to be showered with Veuve and caviar. Their hotel rooms were full of beauty products, clothes, and other gifts.</p> <p>On TikTok, the backlash started immediately, with commenters saying they found the content "annoying and not entertaining" and they were "surprised" Tarte was still persisting with these trips.</p><p>Some also criticized the company for the environmental impact of the private jets, mirroring the criticism <a target="_blank" href="https://ethically-dressed.com/this-is-why-the-shein-brand-trip-to-china-backfired/">fast-fashion brand Shein received last year</a> when a group of influencers were sent to its factories in China.</p><p>"I have never wanted to purchase from Tarte less," one commenter said. "I haven't bought Tarte in YEARS and will never again," declared another.</p><p>Tahrea Sherman, a TikToker who covers pop culture, told BI that more than anything, it was the timing that "riled people up."</p><p>"A lot of people's dollars are just stretched thin," she said. "People are really getting sick of these corporations making millions, even billions of dollars off of the working people and rewarding people that already have money."</p><p>Young people are in their "boycott era," said Sherman, who is on the cusp of millennials and Gen Z, and are no longer impressed or feeling like they have to buy certain things to feel worthy.</p><p>For example, the term "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deinfluencing-is-the-anti-influencer-trend-rich-with-paradoxes-2023-1">deinfluencing</a>" blew up last year, when a group of content creators aimed to topple the culture of needless shopping and fast fashion, telling people they don't need the latest makeup product, bag, or clothing item they're being <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-is-bad-boring-fyp-2024-2">advertised on TikTok shop</a>.</p><p>This, along with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-living-with-parents-save-money-housing-crisis-cost-2024-2">cost-of-living crisis</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rental-market-housing-affordability-real-estate-apartments-2024-1">higher rents</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-market-outlook-mortgage-affordable-homes-high-prices-inventory-rates-2024-3">mortgage rates</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-card-debt-interest-rates-consolidation-economy-recession-soft-landing-2024-2?utm_source=copy-link&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=topbar">credit-card debt racking up</a>, means seeing already-wealthy influencers given free, luxury vacations doesn't have mass appeal anymore.</p><p>"They already make what some people make in a year on one post and now they're being flown out to Bora Bora," Sherman said.</p><p>"Nobody wants to watch somebody eating caviar on their private jet when they're scraping up money to buy eggs. They're eating fish eggs in the sky, and you can't even buy great-value eggs from Walmart."</p> <p>Phil Treagus-Evans, the CEO of social media marketing agency Giraffe Social Media, told BI the shift occurred partly due to the pandemic, where people started to favor more authentic content and move away from "things being overly polished."</p><p>"More than ever, consumers are wanting content that feels 'real' and relatable," he said. "Influencers being paid to fly on private jets to exotic locations is the opposite."</p><h2>Controversy means brand recognition</h2><p>The controversy may not be all that much of a concern, Varbanova said. In fact, it may be exactly what Tarte is after.</p><p>"The number one killer of content and brand growth is obscurity. It's not hate," Varbanova said. "Because at the end of the day, whether you love us or hate us, at least you know about us."</p><p>She added that she thinks there's a Tarte marketing executive out there somewhere laughing and thinking to themselves: "Damn, we didn't get enough controversy this time."</p><p>"If Tarte was a brand new brand starting from scratch now, I don't think it would work," she added. "I think the reason it works is that they are already established and they already have their target audience."</p> <p>Gen Z is not that target audience. Varbanova said there are some young people — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-criticizes-childless-people-after-dink-couple-video-viral-2023-12">mostly millennials and DINKs</a> — who still see over-the-top, extravagant brand trips as aspirational.</p><p>This demographic is probably middle-class, fairly high-earning, and may even have a desire to be influencers themselves.</p><p>"They're not targeting the average person," Varbanova said. Rather, the content is for people with disposable income who "would love to go to Bora Bora" and want to work harder because they desire "a more luxurious life."</p><p>If Gen Z's spending money is the goal, brand trips are missing the mark. To interest young people again, companies have to find a way to put on trips that promote equality or sustainability, Varbanova said.</p><p>Sherman said she'd also like to see brands sending "everyday people" on some of these excursions: "Instead of sending these influencers that already have millions of followers and make tens of thousands of dollars, send teachers, send nurses," she said. "It'll make consumers feel better about supporting companies that give back to the community in that way."</p><p>Gen Z's issue isn't with people being rich, they're just against waste and splurging for splurging's sake. More of a focus on wearing recycled clothing and paying fair wages to the staff would go some way to bringing their interest back, Varbanova said.</p><p>"They want to see, OK, you're rich, and?" she said. "How are you using that to better society?"</p><p>Kelly told BI giving back has always been a priority to Tarte, and on the Bora Bora trip, the company donated to a local animal shelter to fund the care of 80 dogs.</p><p>"At Tarte, it's not just about makeup; it's about building connections and spreading kindness wherever we go," Kelly said.</p>

Gen Zers want you to know they are sick of extravagant influencer brand trips

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One woman died and several others were injured after a GloRilla concert in Rochester on Sunday, police said.</li><li>Police said the injuries were a result of "people being trampled."</li></ul><p>One person died and multiple people were wounded following a stampede at a concert in Rochester, New York on Sunday night, police said. </p><p>At a Monday morning <a href="https://www.facebook.com/13WHAM/videos/178052184977177" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press conference</a>, Rochester police said that the crowd surge at the end of the event at Main Street Armory where Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla and Finesse2tymes performed was triggered by the false panic of a shooting, as the concertgoers were leaving the venue shortly after 11 p.m.</p><p>The venue did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on Monday.</p><p>One of the women, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/rochester-glorilla-concert-stampede-finesse2tymes-bed449a961333fa69081b686cb39f7f3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">identified as a 33-year-old</a>, died and the two others were reported to be in critical condition, authorities said. Seven other victims were also hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, police added.</p><p>"Preliminary reports from people at the scene indicate that these injuries were caused from people being trampled," Police Chief David Smith said at the press conference. "We do not have any evidence of gunshots being fired or of anyone being shot or stabbed at the scene."</p><p>Smith said the incident this under investigation and that officials are looking into "reports of potential causes including crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray and other contributing factors." He noted that investigators are interviewing witnesses who were in attendance. </p><p>GloRilla offered her condolences in a tweet Monday morning. </p><p>"I'm just now hearing about what happened wtf," she said. "Praying everybody is ok."</p><p>One concertgoer <a href="https://www.whec.com/top-news/large-police-presence-at-the-armory-on-east-main-street/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told WHEC</a> that the venue was "deathly packed." Police said when officers entered the building, they discovered three injured women, and first responders "provided life-saving measures" at the scene. The victims were transported to a local hospital. </p><p>Rochester Mayor Malik Evans called the incident a "tragedy of epic proportions," adding that "we are going to hold people accountable for what happened last night, period."</p><p>Evans asked the public for any photos or videos taken during the concert to help with the investigation. </p><p>"We are nowhere near completing this investigation," he said. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A woman told Insider that she struggled to exit the venue after GloRilla's concert this past weekend. </li><li>"You couldn't move your body parts, you couldn't move your arms or legs," she said. </li></ul><p>Keiyasia Ponder was excited to go to her first concert since she was a child.</p><p>So, when the 21-year-old heard that one of her favorite artists, Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla, was performing in Rochester at Main Street Armory, she purchased a VIP ticket.</p><p>Ponder went to Sunday night's event by herself with a plan to meet up with her friends and cousins at the venue. When she got inside the establishment, she told Insider that the general area was packed with people shoulder to shoulder. </p><p>"I was so focused on the event, I wasn't even paying attention to how many much clutter it was, how many people we were on top of each other," Ponder said. "But there was enough space in the VIP section. The front of it was crowded but towards the back of it, it wasn't too many people."</p><p>Ponder said she had fun at the concert until it was time to leave, describing the scene as "something she's never experienced before." She explained that a crowd of people was compacted together by the exit. </p><p>"You couldn't move your body parts, you couldn't move your arms or legs. It was a bunch of people and we was somehow moving towards the door, but we not walking, we just shifting," she recalled. "All you could do is just shift your body and try to move. The venue did not respond to Insider's multiple requests for comment. </p><p>Ponder told Insider she was grateful that she got out of the crowd safely. </p><p>"It's a lot going on for me. It was a time when photographs still had to be developed by hand in a "darkroom," just like one of the show's main characters has to do repeatedly while working for a local newspaper.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>But let's say you grew up in a world where photography was all handled by a magical supercomputer in your pocket - you might not know what "the purpose of this 'red room' is.</p><p>That's exactly what happened with one user posting to the online forum StackExchange in a question that's since gone viral on social media:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The "red room," of course, is a darkroom used for developing photos.</p><p>But the idea of a "Stranger Things" viewer outright not knowing what such a room is and what it's used for has made some folks feel absurdly old.</p><p>Thankfully, folks in the StackExchange forum generously supplied a thorough answer to the use of a darkroom in photography, and why a red light would be used to illuminate such a room.</p><p>But just in case you're wondering yourself: Before digital photography, images were developed by hand in chemical baths kept in "darkrooms." Light from the outside could potentially ruin any photos being developed, so a red light (which doesn't interfere with photo development) is often used.&#xa0;</p><p>And for the millions of you who grew up with darkrooms and manually developed photos: Yep, this is where we're at. At that age, they could only be involved in the music and creativity side of things."</p><p>Despite their youth, their aptitude for all-round musical development was clear. "The girls were keen to learn more about their craft. They worked with great songwriters, producers and choreographers, so they could quickly develop the skills involved," says Knowles.</p><p>Decades later, Beyoncé still maintains a hands-on approach with her crew. "Beyoncé is very detail-oriented," Knowles says. (Incidentally, the name Destiny's Child was taken from a passage in the Biblical Book of Isaiah.)</p><p>Balancing Beyoncé's interests - as a person and a "product" - proved especially challenging as a father-manager, Knowles said. "It wasn't easy ... Fortunately, my ex-wife [Tina Knowles] and I used to own a hair salon. So, I had the opportunity to work with relatives before but, with your children, you have to wear two different hats - a business hat and a parental hat.</p><p>"As a manager, I had a fiduciary duty to treat all the members' careers the same. Sometimes, this wasn't necessarily what was best for Beyoncé.
