"You're racing for the win, and either you are going to do it to me, or I am going to do it to you," Suarez said during the broadcast. "At that point, it is who is going to do it first. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Ty Gibbs lost his cool on the track again, and this time some innocent bystanders were nearly injured.</li><li>Brad Keselowski says teenagers shouldn't be in the Cup series and Gibbs should have been suspended.</li></ul>Ty Gibbs is making a lot of enemies in his rapid ascent up the NASCAR ranks, and one former champ says it is because he is too young to be competing in the top level of stock car racing.Gibbs, who races for Michael Jordan's 23XI Racing, lost his cool on pit road at Texas Motor Speedway and nearly caused another driver to hit some innocent bystanders working on a stopped car. Veteran driver Brad Keselowski blamed NASCAR for allowing a 19-year-old into the top series and said Gibbs should have been suspended, considering this wasn't his first transgression.The latest incident occurred as Gibbs, who is filling in for the injured Kurt Busch in the 23 car, was traveling down pit road and was hit by Ty Dillon as he exited his pit box. Gibbs retaliated by slamming into Dillon's car and forcing him to brake hard to avoid hitting NASCAR officials and pit crew members working on the broken car of Chris Buescher.You can see the contact near the top of the screen here. Cars are traveling about 55 mph down pit road. Keselowski, a co-owner of Buescher's car, was a guest on NASCAR Race Hub and discussed the incident. While explaining the immense danger presented in that situation — "[crew members and officials] nearly got run over," he said — the 2012 champ said he feels the bigger problem is young drivers not having enough time at lower levels to learn these lessons."Ultimately, what I see here is a teenage kid who is working his way through it," Keselowski said. "He's making mistakes on the biggest stage in our sport, and it's a really difficult situation. I can't be mad at Ty. I did a lot dumber things when I was a teenager, but I wasn't on this stage. So this goes to a bigger problem of why we don't really need teenagers at this level because this is not the place to learn those lessons."Keselowski was 25 when he made his NASCAR Cup Series debut. While Gibbs is a talented driver and considered a rising star, his rapid ascent in the sport is often credited to being the grandson of NFL coaching legend and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs.NASCAR fined Gibbs $75,000 for the incident and docked Jordan's 23XI Racing 25 points in the owners' championship. At one point, Suárez, who everybody typically greets as "Amigo!" even shoved his own Trackhouse Racing teammate, Ross Chastain, out of the way. It turns out Suárez really wanted Bowman to know that he was not happy about contact between the pair before the race ended. Once Suárez caught up with Bowman, he rear-ended him three times.Bowman said after the race that Suarez didn't realize the contact between the pair during the race was caused by a third driver. Bowman described it as a typical misunderstanding on road courses where chain reactions are common."Daniel and I, we've been teammates in the past, raced together a long time," Bowman said. "I respect the hell out of him. I'm sure he's still not super happy. Just tried to explain that I wouldn't race him like that, that I was shoved in there. You see that a lot at these road courses.... Sometimes just it's a chain reaction. Fortunately, it worked out for us, ended up with a top five."It is not clear what penalty Suárez might face. Typically nobody cares when one driver bumps another out of anger, but this type of contact on pit road is a big no-no.Last year, <a href="https://nascar.nbcsports.com/2022/09/27/nascar-fines-ty-gibbs-75000-for-pit-road-incident-at-texas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NASCAR fined Ty Gibbs $75,000 and docked him 25 points</a> for intentionally ramming Ty Dillon on pit road. The contact <a href="https://www.insider.com/nascar-wreck-teenagers-ty-gibbs-brad-keselowski-2022-9">forced Dillon's car to nearly hit NASCAR officials and pit crew members</a> working on the broken car of Chris Buescher.The contact between Suárez and Bowman was in the less-crowded entrance to pit road, but at least one NASCAR official was standing nearby.

One of NASCAR's nicest drivers appeared to speed past 7 cars to intentionally rear-end a rival on pit road after the race ended

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Martin Truex Jr. got hit from behind on pit road, spun, and nearly crushed one of his crew members.</li><li>This was the second near-miss in a month, after Ty Gibbs nearly caused another car to hit a crew member.</li></ul>For the second time in a month, NASCAR narrowly avoided a major disaster as a car came close to hitting crew members working on pit road.On Sunday, with 21 laps to go in the NASCAR playoff race at Homestead-Miami, race leader Martin Truex Jr. entered pit road during a caution, with defending champion Kyle Larson behind him. As Truex neared his pit stall, he quickly veered to the left, and Larson hit him from behind, causing Truex to spin.While the move was unfortunate from a race perspective — Larson went on to win the race, and Truex finished sixth — everybody was fortunate that Truex's crew members were able to scramble out of the way of his car, with one hopping over the wall just in time.Initially, members of Truex's team, including team owner and NFL coaching legend Joe Gibbs, were visibly upset, feeling that Larson was at fault. However, after the race, Truex admitted that he struggled to see with the sun directly in his eyes, suggesting he almost missed his pit stall."It's really hard to see through these windshields right now with the sun like that and all the stuff covering it," Truex said after the race. "I did see my box late for sure, so I slowed down before I turned out of the way of [Larson] there. Obviously, partly on me. I didn't expect to get turned around. I'm glad nobody got hurt there."<h2>NASCAR and the crew members got lucky</h2>What makes this situation even scarier is that the cars are traveling much faster than they may appear on television. While they are going much slower than their race speeds (170-180 mph), they are still reaching 50-55 mph on pit road, which is not far off from many highway speeds for passenger cars.We saw a similar incident one month ago at Texas Motor Speedway, where rookie driver Ty Gibbs — grandson of Joe Gibbs — <a href="https://www.insider.com/nascar-wreck-teenagers-ty-gibbs-brad-keselowski-2022-9">lost his cool on pit road</a>. Gibbs was traveling down pit road and was hit by Ty Dillon as he exited his pit box. Gibbs retaliated by slamming into Dillon's car and forcing him to brake hard to avoid hitting NASCAR officials and pit crew members working on the broken car of Chris Buescher. In the most recent incident, drivers will typically move to the left into the second lane before slowing down. This didn't happen here, as NASCAR driver David Ragan explained on FS1's "NASCAR Race Hub.""I see Kyle Larson really not doing anything wrong," Ragan said. "He gives Martin Truex a foot or two going down pit road. He's watching his [dash] to make sure he is right at that speed limit. But Martin really made a pretty quick, evasive left-hand [turn], and he slows down in that outside lane [in front of Larson]. Typically what you do is you find your pit stall and start blending over a little early so you can start decelerating."If you watch the replay in the video above, you can see Truex's right-rear tire momentarily lock up from hitting the brakes while he was still in front of Larson."I just think this is a racing accident," said TJ Majors, host of Dirty Mo Media's "Door Bumper Clear" podcast. "If there is one bad thing about Homestead, it is the glare down the front stretch for the drivers. It is hard to see. So I chalk this up as a racing deal."Larson noted that it is more than just the sun in the drivers' eyes."It's hard to see down this pit road," Larson said after the race. "I don't know if fans and people realize, when you've got debris all over your windshield, the sun is shining straight in your face, it's hard to see your stall. So hate that that happened. He was definitely the one I was going to have to beat."<h2>There is no easy solution</h2>"The pit crew did a great job getting out of the way," Fox Sports host Kaitlyn Vincie said on "Door Bumper Clear." "That could have been really bad."Ragan echoed this sentiment."Thankfully, his pit crew was able to jump out of the way," Ragan said. "They were really quick on their feet. It could have been a lot worse."What nobody has offered is a potential solution. In the case of Gibbs, he was fined $75,000, and NASCAR hopes that will be a message to everybody not to mess around on pit road. But in this incident, most agree that it was just bad luck and collectively shrug their shoulders."If Larson's pit stall is down in Turn 4, further towards [the pit entrance], it doesn't happen," Majors said. "Things lined up just right for this accident to happen, and one little slip, and 'bam!' There's no room for error."NASCAR has already upgraded the gear worn by pit crew members with full helmets required for anybody over the wall working on a car. After that, the only thing left might be to lower the speed limit on pit road. But as "Door Bumper Clear" host Brett Griffin noted, there is always going to be some risk for the crew members."The crew guys' lives are at risk," Griffin said. "Their health is at risk ... They have got a freakin' tons of car, tons of weight coming at them at 50 mph. These guys risk their bodies every single pit stop."

NASCAR narrowly avoided disasters on pit road twice in a month and there is no easy solution

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bubba Wallace appeared to intentionally wreck Kyle Larson from behind at over 150 mph.</li><li>Former NASCAR champ Joey Logano was critical of the move, noting Kyle Larson's life was on the line.</li></ul>Former NASCAR champion Joey Logano didn't hold back in his criticism of <a href="https://www.insider.com/bubba-wallace-kyle-larson-fight-jeff-burton-2022-10">Bubba Wallace for causing a wreck with Kyle Larson that could have been much worse</a>.Logano, who won the Las Vegas race and advanced to the Championship 4, was a guest on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. He was asked about Wallace appearing to retaliate against Larson by hitting him from behind and causing a wreck at over 150 mph that knocked both drivers out of the race."The retaliation is not okay in the way it happened," Logano said. "If he spun him to the infield, maybe it's a little better, maybe. But right-rear hooking somebody in the dogleg is not okay. I don't know if everybody realizes how bad that could have been. That could've been the end of Kyle Larson's career. That, to me, was what was on the line — or his life. That is the worst place to get right-rear hooked, into a corner."Logano went on to suggest Wallace used his car as a weapon."I don't like using cars as a weapon," Logano said, making a reference to another recent incident in which <a href="https://www.insider.com/nascar-wreck-teenagers-ty-gibbs-brad-keselowski-2022-9">19-year-old Ty Gibbs retaliated on pit road</a>, nearly forcing an opponent into a group of crew members who were working on a car. "If you're that mad, just get out and fight him, that's fine ... But do I think straight-up blasting them into the wall is okay? No, because the consequences are way bigger than just a race."Former Daytona 500 champion Trevor Bayne, while a guest on "NASCAR Race Hub," also echoed Logano's sentiments about how the wreck could have been much worse. According to Bayne, Larson got lucky to hit Christopher Bell's car as he slid up the track, keeping Larson from hitting the wall."If the 20-car is not there on the straightaway when the 5-car spins and is coming up, he's going to back that car in [to the wall], which is the worst position to have these race cars in for impact," Bayne said.Similar wrecks, where a driver has spun and hit the wall backward, have recently led to serious concussions in both Kurt Busch and Alex Bowman. The new NextGen cars are so sturdy that they don't absorb as much of the impact during wrecks. In Busch's case, it ended his season and led to his announcement that he is retiring from full-time racing.Bell, a playoff driver, was knocked out of the first race in the Round of Eight. With only two races left to decide which four drivers will compete for the championship, Bell now likely needs a win to advance.Former NASCAR crew chief Larry McReynolds was also on "NASCAR Race Hub" and explained why a combination of factors would leave him "not shocked" if Wallace is suspended for a race."I think they are going to look at the retaliation," McReynolds said. "I think they are going to look at the fact that he walks down the race track and goes down there and shoves on Kyle Larson. But I think another big-ticket item is the fact that he did not listen to NASCAR [asking him to get into the safety vehicle]. That move eliminated defending champion Kyle Larson from the playoffs.NASCAR fined the teammate, Cole Custer, $100,000 and suspended his crew chief for impacting the race's outcome. However, they stopped short of dropping Briscoe from the playoffs and re-inserting Larson, claiming that <a href="https://www.insider.com/nascar-playoffs-chase-briscoe-advance-cole-custer-round-of-8-2022-10">the move did not impact the playoff standings</a>.And those were just the most notable moments among playoff drivers. We also saw <a href="https://www.insider.com/joey-logano-bubba-wallace-kyle-larson-wreck-suspension-2022-10">Bubba Wallace elevate his status to Public Enemy No. 1 in NASCAR</a> by intentionally wrecking Larson. Wallace was suspended and lustily booed in his return. We also saw <a href="https://www.insider.com/nascar-martin-truex-kyle-larson-pit-road-spin-wreck-2022-10">two near-disasters on pit road in the playoffs</a>. The first came when Ty Gibbs lost his cool and nearly pushed Chris Buescher into a group of crew members working on a car. Later, Martin Truex Jr almost missed his pit stall thanks to the sun in his eyes and was spun by Larson, nearly taking out his crew members who got back across the wall just in the nick of time.<h2>Not everybody likes the playoffs</h2>But while the playoffs have been entertaining, some in the NASCAR world miss the old format, which simply gave the championship to the driver who earned the most points throughout the season.<a href="https://www.dirtymomedia.com/">According to Dirty Mo Media's "Door Bumper Clear,"</a> NASCAR veteran Hamlin, considered the best active driver yet to win a championship, said he would rather reach 60 wins than a title. The show quoted Hamlin as saying he values the wins more and the championship less than he had "because of the way they crown the champion." Hamlin, 41, has 48 career wins, and 12 more would move him into the top 10. NASCAR spotter and show host TJ Majors poo-pooed the statement a bit, noting that Hamlin will "value the hell out of it" if he ever does win a championship. However, he also noted that the trophy's lure has changed."It's hard to argue with him," Majors said. "The championship doesn't have the same luster it once had, when it was a season-long battle. Last year's champion was decided by a pit stop.... Winning 60 races — you talk about winning three Daytona 500s — I feel like that is more prestigious. I'd rather have 60 wins than, 'Oh, I won a race off pit road.'"The pit stop Majors referenced is the final one of the championship race in 2021, when Kyle Larson's pit crew pulled off their fastest stop of the season, jumping him from fourth to first with 24 laps to go. Larson held on to win the race and the title.<h2>F1 is proof that a season-long title can be anti-climatic</h2>The obvious comparison is Formula One, where the drivers' championship is awarded on total points from the season. While that is a better way to crown the "best" driver, it is not a flawless system, as this year's series has shown.Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen clinched his second-straight championship with nearly 20% of the season remaining (four races). His record-setting 14 wins show he deserved to win the title, but it also took a lot of energy out of the season's final races.Of course, a season-long title can still be dramatic, as we saw last year, when Verstappen won the championship by passing Lewis Hamilton on the season's final lap. But in a non-playoff world, that is the exception and not the norm. So, are motorsports better with a playoff format? There is no right or wrong answer. But ultimately, maybe soccer does it best where they have multiple trophies, including season-long championships and separate playoff-like tournaments. In the meantime, no matter who wins the NASCAR championship, the playoffs this year have been entertaining, and that is good for the sport.
