RSS claims a victory in its decades' long campaign against Kashmir's special status

Although the <keyword id="42498" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="RSS">RSS</keyword> wants <keyword id="405091" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Article-370">Article 370</keyword> to be abolished, it is not in a hurry and wants a debate on the issue. As per media reports, RSS said debates and discussions are healthy signs in a democracy. 
 
Interestingly, Abrogation of Article 370 and construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya featured in BJP’s election manifesto. 
 Reacting to <keyword id="17605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's statement that the state will not remain part of the country if Article 370 is scrapped, RSS leader Ram Madhav said, “The state will always be an integral part of India, with or without the provision.” 
 
"J&amp;K won't be part of India? Is Omar thinking it is his parental estate? 370 or no 370, J&amp;K has been and will always be an integral part of India," Madhav said on Twitter. 
 
The controversy cropped up after Jitender Singh, an MP from Jammu and MoS in the Prime Minister's Office, said the process of repealing Article 370 had started and discussions were being held with he ‘stakeholders concerned.’ 
 RSS ideologue MG Vaidya said <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had called for a debate on Article 370 in his election campaign in Jammu and its relevance should be discussed. 
 
"The IAS and IPS officers are working in the valley. Moreover, the verdict of the Jammu &amp; Kashmir Assembly can be challenged before the Supreme Court of the country and the Union Government can impose President's rule if such a situation arises," he said.

Twitter's explanation on showing Ladakh as part of China deemed inadequate by India

What is making the matter worse is <keyword id="2479020" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fake-news">fake news</keyword> is spreading at a rapid pace along the India Pakistan border. The state's governor Satya Pal Malik requested citizens to not believe any news that comes their way, adding that fake news in Kashmir snowballs quickly. “Lot of rumours spread here. Don’t pay heed to this. Everything is normal. The state rumours The worst of such rumours is one claiming that the state will scrap Article 35A, which gives the state of <keyword id="23412" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Kashmir">Jammu &amp; Kashmir</keyword> special status. Another rumour says that the state will deploy troops to control law &amp; order once the order is passed. Yet another fake news says that Article 35A has been scrapped, that Jammu is a separate state. And also that Kashmir and Ladakh have turned as union territories. The governor has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/jk-governor-rejects-speculation-on-article-35-a-says-its-fake-news/articleshow/70458937.cms">denied these rumours</a> saying that there are no plans to scrap Article 35A. He added that there was no such order came from the government. Meanwhile, ANI reported that the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Baseer Ahmed Khan has said, “No schools in the district have been closed. I appeal to people to not believe any rumours. People should contact their concerned deputy commissioners for reliable information.” Fake orders too? After the clarification from the governor, former Chief Minister of J&amp;K Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to express his concern on the necessity to crackdown on fake orders that are circulating in the state. “This is a very serious matter raised by the Governor. Fake orders were circulated under the signature of senior government officers. This is not something that can be dismissed with a simple sound byte. The CBI must be asked to investigate these fake orders and their origin,” Abdullah said.

Fake news is adding to the anxiety around tensions on the India-Pakistan border

An <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> of magnitude 6.2 Richter scale has hit the Hindukush region of Afghanistan, with <keyword id="6494418" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tremors">tremors</keyword> being felt in both Pakistan and the northern region of India. According to reports, tremors were felt across Jammu, Srinagar, adjoining areas in Kashmir, Delhi and NCR. 
 
The tremors were also felt in Islamabad and Lahore in Pakistan. Reports have suggested that the earthquake created panic and frantic messages were exchanged on Facebook and Twitter. As of now, no casualties have been reported. The earthquake is a stark reminder of the tragic Nepal earthquakes that claimed thousands of lives.

<ul><li>On August 2, thousands of <keyword id="44352" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amarnath-Yatra">Amarnath Yatra</keyword> pilgrims were asked to leave <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> immediately. </li><li>Since then, section 144 has been imposed, internet services have been suspended, political leaders like <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> and <keyword id="6375812" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mehbooba-mufti">Mehbooba Mufti</keyword> have been placed under house arrest. </li><li>Union Home Minister Amit Shah reportedly held a meeting to discuss the recent developments in Kashmir.</li></ul>On Friday (August 2) evening, the Indian government asked <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-india-pakistan-border-in-kashmir-is-simmering-again-thousands-of-amarnath-pilgrims-have-been-sent-back/articleshow/70500904.cms">thousands of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims</a> to leave Kashmir immediately citing a terror threat. Since then, the state has been in confusion and chaos. Making matters worse is a series of speculation by both <a href="https://twitter.com/SankarshanT/status/1157987037938511872">news outfits as well as on social media </a>that has led to people fearing the worst and hoarding food and necessities. The radio silence from New Delhi, while building up troops in the valley, in the face of rampant speculation has added to the unease, particularly in the Kashmir valley. The speculations range from the abrogation of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-is-article-35a-of-the-indian-constitution-all-you-need-to-know/articleshow/69684605.cms">Article 35A</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-is-article-370-of-the-indian-constitution-all-you-need-to-know/articleshow/69684790.cms">Section 370</a> of the Indian Constitution to the splitting up of the state into 3 parts – Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. However, there has been no clear evidence to suggest any of the above. Let us look at all that has happened over the last three days that have intensified tensions in Kashmir leading to warnings from Pakistan too. Security beefed up The state of <keyword id="23412" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Kashmir">Jammu &amp; Kashmir</keyword> has been under President’s rule since December 2018 and now, section 144, which prohibits an assembly of more than 4 people in an area, has been imposed. "As per the order, there shall be no movement of public and all educational institutions shall also remain closed. There will be a complete bar on holding any kind of public meetings or rallies during the period of operation of this order. Identity cards of essential services officials will be treated as movement passes wherever required. However, there is no curfew in place as reported in a section of media," an official statement said as reported by IANS. The government had already deployed an additional paramilitary personnel of 10,000 in the state. According to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/security-deployment-at-vital-installations-in-kashmir-increased-political-parties-hold-meeting-top-developments/articleshow/70524096.cms">reports</a>, riot control vehicles too have been deployed in the state. <keyword id="7948376" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="leaders-under-house-arrest">Leaders under house arrest</keyword> The state’s top political leaders were placed under house arrest late Sunday night. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to write about the imminent house arrest. “I believe I’m being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight &amp; the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then I’ll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store. Allah save us,” he wrote on Twitter. His rival, and a former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti wrote, “How ironic that elected representatives like us who fought for peace are under house arrest. The world watches as people &amp; their voices are being muzzled in J&amp;K. The same Kashmir that chose a secular democratic India is facing oppression of unimaginable magnitude. Wake up India.” Life comes to a standstill Internet services have been suspended since Sunday night in the state. Meanwhile, education institutions in the state too have been asked to remain shut from today until further orders. Kashmir university exams which were supposed to take place from August 5 to 10 have been postponed, according to IANS. BSNL will be giving satellite phones to media persons at the steep price of ₹1 lakh a piece to file stories from the Valley, said an IANS report. However, according to ANI, schools and colleges will reopen today in Ladakh as restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have not been imposed in the region. Security meeting in Pakistan In Pakistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan called for a <a href="https://www.dawn.com/news/1498058/nsc-meeting-pakistan-to-respond-to-any-misadventure-aggression-by-indian-forces">meeting</a> of the National Security Committee to discuss the developments along the border and reportedly, react to any steps taken by the Indian military. While Pakistan alleged that the Indian army used cluster bombs along the Line Of Control, the Indian army has said it was to foil an attempt by Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) to cross over to the Indian side of the border. "Pakistan army regularly attempts to push terrorists through infiltration and opens up with multitude of weapons to assist them. India, during numerous Directorate of Military Operations-level talks, has maintained the right to respond. Such responses are only against military targets and infiltrating terrorists who are aided by Pakistan Army. Allegations of firing of cluster bombs by India is yet another Pakistan's lie and deception," <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/indian-army-pakistan-cluster-bombs-ammunition-loc-kashmir-1576890-2019-08-03">the Indian army said in a statement.</a> Cabinet meeting in India Meanwhile, in Delhi, Union Minister Amit Shah is said to have held a security meeting including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to discuss the situation in Kashmir. Other senior officials at the meeting included, Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Intelligence Bureau chief Arvind Kumar, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Samant Kumar Goel. According to an IANS report, Shah is reportedly planning to visit the state. Social media giant Twitter has apologised in writing to a key parliamentary panel for wrongly showing Ladakh in China and has promised to correct the error by the month-end, the committee's chairperson Meenakshi Lekhi said on Wednesday. Twitter's deposition has come in form of an affidavit signed by Damien Karien, Chief Privacy Officer of Twitter Inc, for wrong geo-tagging of India's map, Lekhi told . Last month, the Joint Committee of Parliament on Data Protection Bill had come down heavily on Twitter for showing Ladakh as part of China, saying it amounted to treason and had sought an explanation by the US-based parent of the social media platform in form of an affidavit. Appearing before the panel, chaired by Lekhi, representatives of <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword> had "begged apology", but they were told by the members that it was a criminal offence that questioned the sovereignty of the country and an affidavit must be submitted by Twitter Inc, not by its 'marketing arm' Twitter India. "Twitter has now given us a written apology on an affidavit for Ladakh being shown in China," Lekhi said. "They have apologised for hurting Indian sentiments and have sworn to correct the error by November 30, 2020," she added. Twitter had come under heavy criticism and faced a backlash from social media users after its geotagging feature displayed "Jammu &amp; Kashmir, the People's Republic of China" in a live broadcast from Leh's Hall of Fame, a war memorial for fallen soldiers in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Indian government on October 22 had warned Twitter about its location setting that showed Leh in China, saying any disrespect towards the country's sovereignty and integrity is totally unacceptable. In a strongly-worded letter, Ajay Sawhney, Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to respect the country's sensitivities, sources in the ministry had said. At that time, Twitter had called it a technical issue that had been swiftly resolved. In its affidavit submitted before the parliamentary panel, Twitter is believed to have said the issue was "caused due to a software error combined with imperfect data resulting in an incorrect geo-tag". "In the last few weeks, we have worked towards resolving the geo-tag issue in a manner wherein Leh as well as other cities in the Union Territory of Ladakh will now accurately show with their respective city name, state and country. "In addition to this, we are also reviewing the geo-tag for various other cities in Jammu and Kashmir. This work is already in progress and we are targeting November 30, 2020 to complete this exercise," it added. Twitter further said it wanted to reiterate that India was a priority market and it was committed to partnering with the Government of India and MeitY to serve the public conversation and communities on the micro-blogging site. "Our team in India will continue to engage with the Ministry for any follow-up discussions. We would also like to apologise for any sentiments that were hurt because of this error," it added. On October 28, Twitter's India representatives were questioned for more than two hours by the panel members, mainly on Ladakh being shown as part of China on the Twitter app. "The committee was of the unanimous opinion that Twitter's explanation on showing Ladakh as part of China was inadequate," Lekhi had said after the meeting. Twitter was also asked about its banning policy, while some members also raised questions about Twitter's transparency policy and its actions during elections, especially vis-a-vis their policies in other countries.
