<br /><strong>What does DuckDuckGo have that Google doesn’t?<br /></strong><br />The most common reason that users switch over from Google to DuckDuckGo is because the latter offers more privacy. “Our privacy policy is simple: we don’t collect or share any of your personal information,” states the company’s <a href="https://duckduckgo.com/">website</a>.<br /><br />DuckDuckGo doesn’t follow users around trying to deliver targetted ads. It doesn’t track user IP addresses. And, it doesn’t store any search history — which can actually also? be a hindrance if a user ever wants to backtrack their research.<br /><br />Overall, DuckDuckGo claims that it will never be able to sell user data because it doesn’t collect any data, to begin with. <br /><br />But that doesn’t mean DuckDuckGo is perfect. Despite its high standards from privacy, the search engine only garners 0.22% of the market.<br /><br />DuckDuckGo’s user interface looks similar to Google’s⁠— with 10 search results to a page. In some ways, it’s a little better because at the end of a page more search results will roll out underneath — instead of opening up a new page.<br /><br />Depending on the keywords, there may be one or two ads along the top and bottom of a page.<br /><br />The search engine’s web crawler, DuckDuckBot, to find results along with 400 other sources, which includes other search engines — like Bing, Yahoo, and Yandex.<br /><br />But, at the end of the day, it doesn’t have the same resources like Google’s huge search engine, which is only getting bigger every year. “The Google Search index contains hundreds of billions of webpages and is well over 100,000,000 gigabytes in size,” according to the tech giant, which makes it one of the biggest search engine indexes in the world.<br /><br />And, Google's search engine  is pretty smart as well. <br /><br />Google has a collection of tools and databases to back it up in order to deliver the most relevant results. The company is constantly updating its algorithms and increasing the efficiency of its artificial technology (AI) applications.<br /><br />

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey chooses DuckDuckGo over Google, Bing and Yahoo — Here’s why

It sets itself up as a privacy-focused rival to data-hungry Google.</li><li>Dorsey has form when it comes to trolling big tech firms, with Facebook a particular target of his ire in recent months.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/international?r=US&amp;IR=T">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></li></ul><p>Jack Dorsey isn't a fan of Google search, it seems.</p><p>The Twitter founder and CEO - who also serves as CEO of mobile payments firm Square - took aim at Google with a cheeky tweet. It read: "I love @DuckDuckGo. My default search engine for a while now. The app is even better!"</p><p>DuckDuckGo's own Twitter account responded to Dorsey, writing That's great to hear <a href="https://twitter.com/jack" data-focusable="true">@jack</a>! Happy to have you on the Duck side," followed by a duck emoji.</p><p>Founded in 2008 in the US, DuckDuckGo is a search engine that prioritizes user privacy, sporting the tagline "Privacy, simplified." It eschews personalised search results and refuses to profile its users. It sets itself as a more privacy-focused alternative to Google search, which famously hoovers up user data to inform its ads.</p><p>Though DuckDuckGo is a well-visited site in absolute terms, with <a href="https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/duckduckgo.com?ver=classic">an Alexa rank of 187 as of November</a>, it's small fry when compared with Google.</p><p>As such, it says it focuses on returning what it deems to be the best search results, rather than the most search results. It's available as an app both on Google and Apple's app stores.</p><p>This is not the first time Dorsey has trolled a tech giant in a tweet, with Facebook in particular facing his mockery.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>A number of recent Dorsey tweets have taken aim at the social media behemoth, including one earlier this month that mocked its recent logo rebrand from lower case to all-caps. Dorsey's tweet read simply "Twitter... from TWITTER."</p><p>On a more serious note, Dorsey announced in <a href="https://twitter.com/jack/status/1189634360472829952">a tweet thread late October</a> that Twitter would be banning all political ads from its platform. Google will let Android users in Europe choose a different default search engine and it's good news for privacy-focused DuckDuckGo

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Apple wowed the world with speech-driven AI when it introduced Siri 12 years ago.</li><li>It's now dangerously lagging behind its competitors, the columnist Michael Gartenberg argues.</li></ul><p>Apple is the tech giant known for its sleek designs, cutting-edge technology, and innovative consumer products. But when it comes to artificial intelligence, particularly Siri, Apple has gone from leader to laggard. </p><p>Companies such as Google and Microsoft — through its investment in OpenAI — have been showing off mind-blowing advances. Meanwhile, Apple's efforts in this area have been relatively lackluster.</p><p>Siri was introduced to the world in 2011 – 12 years ago – and was lauded at the time as a breakthrough in AI technology. Because it was. However, over the years, Siri has failed to live up to its potential. While the technology has improved since its inception, the AI efforts of Google and OpenAI have greatly eclipsed it.</p><p>One of the biggest limitations of Siri is its lack of natural-language-processing capabilities. Siri struggles to understand the context of a conversation and can reliably perform only simple tasks such as setting reminders or timers. Even after all these years, asking Siri to correctly answer a question or take dictation of a text and send it to the right person is chancy.</p><p>In contrast, Google Assistant and OpenAI's ChatGPT (which is integrated into Microsoft Bing and other Microsoft apps) have advanced natural-language-processing capabilities. This allows them to understand the nuances of human language and respond accordingly.</p><p>For instance, when asking Bing Chat to name things that it can do that Siri can't, it named things like how it can summarize complex political situations or be used with other search engines like DuckDuckGo.</p><p>When Siri was asked what it could do that Bing Chat couldn't, it responded with instructions on how to launch Bing by saying, "Open Bing." While I suppose that's true — Bing can't launch apps on the iPhone — it missed the point of the question.</p><p>Another area where Siri falls short is its third-party-app integration. Siri can perform tasks only within the confines of Apple's ecosystem, while Google Assistant and ChatGPT have integrations with a wide variety of apps, allowing them to perform a greater number of tasks.</p><p>Apple's closed ecosystem also limits the amount of data that Siri has access to. This lack of data makes it difficult for Siri to learn and improve over time, as machine-learning algorithms require large amounts of data to operate effectively. And while folks can (and have) argued about the ethics of how Google and OpenAI use people's data to train their AI models, no one can argue against that their access to vast amounts of data has allowed them to continuously improve AI capabilities.</p><p>Moreover, Apple has been slow to embrace open-source technologies, which are essential for AI research and development. Open-source technology allows developers to collaborate and contribute to a project, leading to faster and more efficient development cycles.</p><p>But Apple has a long history of secrecy, including with its AI projects, which <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-29/apple-s-secrecy-hurts-its-ai-software-development?sref=ipW5reFz#xj4y7vzkg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">kept it out of the loop</a> on cutting-edge research for years. That's been changing. In 2015, Apple <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-10-29/apple-s-secrecy-hurts-its-ai-software-development" target="_blank" rel="noopener">had published no research papers</a> on AI. Today, it has a website that openly shares the roughly 370 papers it's published since 2017. Still, Google, which has a long history of open-source involvement, <a href="https://ai.google/discover/research/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">publishes hundreds of AI research papers</a> yearly.</p><p>And while Apple has also been participating in communities like Hugging Face, where AI researchers share the models they use to train AI apps, its participation there has been relatively paltry. It's shared <a href="https://huggingface.co/apple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">11 models</a>, compared with Microsoft's 245 and Google's <a href="https://huggingface.co/google" target="_blank" rel="noopener">587</a>. And much of Apple's contributions to other big AI open-source projects, including TensorFlow (a project that originated out of Google) and PyTorch (originated out of Facebook) have been aimed at tweaks that let developers run these technologies on Macs. While that's helpful (especially for selling Macs to AI developers), it's not the kind of kumbaya sharing that the open-source community relies on. </p><p>In a sign of just how stagnated, and isolated, Siri development has become, some Apple engineers have left the company to work on the type of large language models that powers OpenAI, The Information reported last month.</p><p>That said, I offer three things I would advise Apple to do as a technology analyst who has covered the company for nearly three decades and, at one point, worked there.</p><ol><li>Expand Siri's capabilities beyond basic commands: Apple should invest in building up Siri's abilities to handle more complex tasks, such as booking appointments, making reservations, and ordering food.</li><li>Improve Siri's natural language processing: Siri's current NLP is less advanced than that of Google Assistant or ChatGPT. Apple could invest in improving Siri's language-understanding capabilities, making it easier for users to interact with the voice assistant.</li><li>Open up Siri's platform: Apple should have done this years ago. Allowing non-Apple software to integrate with Siri would make it far more useful, which would encourage more use, which would help Siri improve. By opening up Siri's platform, Apple could also encourage developers to create more innovative and sophisticated applications that use Siri's voice recognition and natural-language-processing capabilities.</li></ol><p>Some insiders say that Apple is working on all of the above, according to The Information story, and is planning on releasing a new-and-improved Siri in a future release of iOS. We'll be watching for word of this in June at Apple's next Worldwide Developers Conference.</p><p>In the meantime, the Siri we have is the Siri we have. "Specialized search services are strong competitors, too, including companies like Amazon, eBay, Kayak, Travelocity, Yelp, and others."&#xa0;</p><p>But recent statistics paint a different picture. Now, almost ten years later, that contested asset could make IPO history. </li></ul><p><strong>AMD announced a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amd-buys-xilinx-chipmaker-chip-semiconductor-35-billion-intel-2020-10">$35 billion all-stock deal to acquire Xilinx</a></strong>, a maker of programmable chips.  It's the second-largest semiconductor deal in history, behind <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-arm-softbank-acquisition-price-2020-9">Nvidia's planned $40 billion acquisition of ARM</a> that was announced in September. </p><ul><li><strong>Timing wise, the deal presents an interesting contrast</strong>, coming just a week after Intel announced its plans to divest its NAND memory chip business.</li><li><strong>But don't read Intel's spinoff of NAND chips</strong> — a low margin, commodity business — as a sign of Intel and AMD moving in opposite directions. Intel is betting big on programmable chips too: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-closes-altera-deal-2015-12">It acquired Altera</a>, the other big player in the market, five years ago for less than half the price AMD paid for Xilinx.</li><li><strong>FWIW:</strong> There's one notable player left in the programmable chips business: Lattice Semiconductor, a much smaller company that reported better-than-expected Q3 results on Tuesday. </li></ul><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lisa Su, president and CEO of AMD, gives a keynote address during the 2019 CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., January 9, 2019. REUTERS/Steve Marcus" height="2392" width="3190" msid="78915963" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><strong>As AMD CEO Lisa Su</strong> told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amd-agrees-to-buy-rival-chip-maker-xilinx-for-35-billion-11603794663?mod=hp_lead_pos2">the Wall Street Journal,</a> the acquisition is about size."When you look at where the markets are going in the future, I think scale matters," she said.</p><p>The deal could represent a transformative moment for AMD: After a lifetime of playing the role of a "second source" provider for the Intel x86 microprocessors used by PC makers, AMD now has a chance to level the playing field with its archrival in the critical data center market.</p><p>Of course, at the center of the story is cloud computing, which continues to boom even amid a pandemic. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-earnings-q1-fy21-cloud-teams-xbox-2020-10">Microsoft made that clear in its quarterly earnings this week, </a>reporting that its commercial cloud business grew 31% to $15.2 billion.</p><p><strong>Next up: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-apple-google-microsoft-twitter-earnings-q3-congress-2020-10">Super Thursday!</a></strong> That's when Apple, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-apple-google-microsoft-twitter-earnings-q3-congress-2020-10">Alphabet</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-apple-google-microsoft-twitter-earnings-q3-congress-2020-10">Facebook</a>, and Twitter will all give their Q3 report cards. We'll be covering all the action on the Business Insider site. </p><h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-plans-to-improve-search-to-become-better-discovery-site-2020-10">Battle of the search boxes</a></h2><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doj-google-antitrust-case-revealed-2020-10">DOJ wants to curtail Google's search dominance</a>, arguing that <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>'s deal with Apple (among other things) has unfairly thwarted rival internet search engines like Microsoft's hapless Bing and the ever-plucky DuckDuckGo.</p><p>But there's another search box that's giving Google a run for the money: Amazon's product search. As Eugene Kim reveals in his latest scoop, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-plans-to-improve-search-to-become-better-discovery-site-2020-10">Amazon has big plans for its search bar</a>, where roughly 60% of online shoppers begin their searches. Chinese billionaire Jack Ma and AMD CEO Lisa Su have a new tech strategy: shoot the moon

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Samantha Lee/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Reddit users are taking the hammer to Google.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Thousands of Reddit users have joined r/deGoogle, a community dedicated to surviving on the internet without Google.</strong></li><li><strong>The goal is to try and avoid handing any personal information over to Google, and involves avoiding services like Google search, YouTube, Gmail, and Google Docs.</strong></li><li><strong>The exercise shows how Google has come to dominate almost every aspect of how we use the internet.</strong></li><li><strong>A privacy expert warned that the more people rely on Google, the more it can lock people into an ecosystem that sucks up data.</strong></li></ul><p>It's 7.30 a.m., and you've just woken up.</p><p>How many seconds into your day can you last without using Google?</p><p>If you used the alarm clock on your phone that runs Google-owned Android, you've failed.</p><p>If you're an information junkie who checks the news first thing, you've also probably failed. Most news sites - including this one - run Google-owned analytics or ad tools.</p><p>Don't feel too smug if you're an iPhone owner either. Perhaps you checked your route to work on Google Maps, because it's so much better than Apple Maps.</p><p>Or you opened up the Safari browser, which uses Google as its default search engine (Google pays Apple $3 billion a year for that privilege.)</p><p>Maybe you hopped into an Uber to get somewhere - I'm afraid to say, your Uber app relies on Google Maps data.</p><p>In other words, it's really tough to avoid Google from the moment you pick up your phone from to the moment you put it down and go to sleep. Chances are, you're using Google even if you don't consciously know you're using Google. It is omnipresent.</p><p>For a dedicated community of Reddit users, Google's all-consuming power has become too terrifying to contemplate. Called <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/">r/deGoogle</a>, the community began in 2018 and has grown to more than 6,000 users.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shona Ghosh/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Google extracts data from us in so many ways which don't involve ads directly," one r/deGoogle moderator, who goes by the username Firemex, told Business Insider.</p><p>"We think Google's effect on society is dangerous as it is unaccountable. Spying on people to this extent isn't normal and shouldn't be. We should each control the technology we interact with, not the other way around."</p><p>The deGooglers, as they call themselves, have vowed to avoid using any and all Google services in their day-to-day lives. At least <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/25/17613442/google-drive-one-billion-users">eight of its products have a billion users</a>.</p><p>It has tentacles in artificial intelligence, fibre internet, and healthcare. Along with Facebook, Google commands<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/may/02/google-and-facebook-bring-in-one-fifth-of-global-ad-revenue"> a fifth of all advertising spend</a>. Now it's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-console-stadia-2019-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">just entered another hugely popular sector: gaming</a>.</p><p>While its consumer services may be avoidable, Google is also increasingly tied up with the internet's core infrastructure. Like Amazon, Google runs a cloud service which powers some of the world's most popular apps and sites. <a href="https://mashable.com/article/google-cloud-outage-brings-down-snapchat-discord-spotify/?europe=true#DBbNgxGF4OqJ">When Google Cloud fell over in 2018</a>, it took out Snapchat, Discord, Spotify, and "Pokémon Go."</p><p>In essence, you can't really function on the modern internet without running into Google in some way, which makes the de-Googlers' mission all the more difficult.</p><p>"[There are] lots of sacrifices," Firemex told Business Insider. "It's not always practical, but it's worth it in the long run. There's a perpetual renewed vindication each time there's a new story about a huge hack, a huge accidental leak of data or some new assault on privacy by Google and others."</p><h2>r/deGoogle is like a TV thriller where people hide from an all-powerful authority</h2><p>The r/deGoogle Reddit thread is a little like a virtual version of reality TV shows <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunted_(2015_TV_series)">where "fugitives" try and avoid being caught</a> by all-powerful authorities. Download the wrong app, or visit a website without an ad blocker on, and you've fallen into Google's net.</p><p>The de-Googlers' reasons for quitting Google are varied - some have bought into the idea that Google suppresses free speech by prioritising certain search results, while others are freaked out by stories of the company <a href="https://qz.com/1131515/google-collects-android-users-locations-even-when-location-services-are-disabled/">hoovering up location data without permission</a>. Either way, the goal is to untangle themselves from the search giant.</p><p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/8tt5uo/woohoo_mostly_degoogled/?st=jtebb246&amp;sh=bc29a762">One cheery post</a> is titled "Woohoo! Mostly de-Googled!"</p><p>The person, apparently a college student, writes that they have replaced Gmail with Yahoo Mail ("not impressive, but at least it's not full Google"); Chrome with the open source web browser Pale Moon; and Google search with privacy-focused DuckDuckGo.</p><p>Even this de-Googler couldn't fully escape. "Youtube is the one area I really couldn't leave, so I still use Youtube (and hence, unfortunately, have a Google account as a result of that) but I've had a look at [alternative] Vidlii and I hope that'll grow, and will post my next video on both Youtube and Vidlii," the person wrote.</p><p><a href="https://www.vidlii.com/about">VidLii was founded in 2015</a> as an alternative to YouTube, but it doesn't seem to have gained much traction. Its Twitter account has just 836 followers.</p><p>For others, the workarounds quickly become too annoying.</p><p>One despairing user explained that his company runs on Google's business services. While he opts out where possible, Google Calendar doesn't play all that well with non-Google calendars and that creates problems.</p><p>In a post titled "<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/8tpouv/degooglers_im_at_a_moment_of_weakness_help/?st=jtebif8w&amp;sh=bede8d67">DeGooglers - i'm at a moment of weakness. Help!</a>" the user wrote that they kept missing and being late to meetings because they can't sync with Google Calendar.</p><p>"Google have designed a system that f**ks over anyone not COMPLETELY operating within it. And that's just bullshit," the person fumed. "I'm feeling on the brink of just sucking it up and using Google services. I desperately don't want to, but I also don't want for my life to just be ridiculously hard - or harder than it should be - just as a matter of principle."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reddit</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Firemex is adamant it's possible to survive totally without Google.</p><p>"My work doesn't require Google use... I think [I'd] be prepared to find a different job if it was," he told Business Insider. "<span>Because this is a serious issue, which isn't made any better by short-term acquiescence to being exposed."</span></p><p>For the less hardcore deGooglers it's just easier to admit defeat. "Sometimes we just have to do our best," one commenter replied. "Remember that any steps we do take help. It doesn't have to be all or nothing."</p><h2>Google has accumulated too much power, and that is ultimately bad for consumers</h2><p>Given billions of users touch Google's services every day and find their lives are made easier for it, why is it problematic that Google is so big and wide-reaching? It's essentially about the accumulation of power, according to privacy experts.</p><p>None of Google's services are free, although they look like it. Google scans the free version of Gmail for keywords which are then used for targeted ads. Google tracks what you watch on YouTube, then shows you pre-roll ads that might be relevant. If they don't like the ads or any other feature on YouTube, they could switch to an alternative and take their precious attention and data with them. But if there is no viable alternative to YouTube, consumers are locked into Google's ecosystem, and Google's terms.</p><p>And Google has shown it is ready to abuse its dominance. Just this week, it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-fined-17-billion-for-breaking-eu-antitrust-rules-over-adsense-2019-3?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fined for a third time in as many years by the European Union</a> for strong-arming third-party websites into featuring its adverts in search results. As a result, Google has racked up EU penalties worth $9.4 billion since 2017.</p><p>Tomaso Falchetta, Privacy International's head of policy, told Business Insider via email: "Big companies such as Google, Facebook and others continue to impose terms and conditions on users which allow them to collect, analyse and share more and more personal data in ways that people do not understand given the lack of transparency or cannot genuinely consent to.</p><p>"These privacy harms are directly caused by their business models, which increasingly rely on the availability of users' data, and can impose excessive collection of data on people who have become 'captive users' to their providers, given their lack of genuine choice."</p><p>There is also a sense of anger among deGooglers that Google is intrusive in non-transparent ways and for inexplicable reasons.</p><p>One user complained that the Google Translate app on Android <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/9uxpnp/so_now_i_cant_even_use_google_translate_without/?st=jtehjwto&amp;sh=f9449ff0">won't work properly if you don't allow it to access your contact book</a>. It isn't clear why a translate app needs to know who your friends are. "So now I can't even use Google translate without allowing "Contacts" permissions," they wrote.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reddit</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>According to its Google Play store listing, Google's Translate app <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.translate&amp;hl=en_GB">has 20 different permission requests for Android</a>, asking for access to the microphone, camera, SMS messages, and even Bluetooth devices. There is no explanation as to why the Android app needs access to all these different functions.</p><p>By contrast, Apple's mobile software iOS gives users considerably more control over what data apps can access. Google Translate for iOS only requests access to voice assistant Siri, and that's about it.</p><h2>How to take the first steps and cut Google out of your life</h2><p>Gizmodo journalist Kashmir Hill <a href="https://gizmodo.com/i-cut-google-out-of-my-life-it-screwed-up-everything-1830565500">tried to cut Google out of her life in January</a>, building a custom VPN that would even block Google-powered apps and websites. This, she wrote, resulted in irritations like having to use worse alternatives and her computer running more slowly.</p><p>According to the Reddit users who spoke to Business Insider, most people don't need to go as far as creating a custom VPN. According to those we spoke to, these are the first steps they recommended taking if you're thinking about cutting Google out of your life:</p><ul><li>Switch to an iPhone, because Apple doesn't monetise people's data and allows granular privacy controls.</li><li>If you're on an Android phone, and feel technically up to it, <a href="https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/ultimate-guide-using-android-without-google-0193735/">install a custom ROM like LineageOS</a>. A custom Android ROM is an operating system that can replace the pre-installed version of Android on your phone, and can give you the Android experience without the privacy-invading Google elements tacked on. Be aware that it can void the warranty for your phone too.</li><li>Use privacy-focused DuckDuckGo or Startpage.com as your default search engine.</li><li>Swap Gmail for ProtonMail, an encrypted, paid email service.</li><li>Use Apple Maps.</li><li>BUT... there are no competitive alternatives to YouTube. Thousands of Reddit users are trying to delete Google from their lives, but they're finding it impossible because Google is everywhere

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>Mozilla announced today a <a href="https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2014/11/19/promoting-choice-and-innovation-on-the-web/">new five-year contract with Yahoo</a> where Yahoo will be the default search engine in the US.</p>
<p>That means when you open up your browser, you won't see Google search anymore. Firefox users will see a "new enhanced Yahoo Search experience" beginning in December.</p>
<p>It will feature a "clean, modern interface" and will support Do Not Track, Mozilla says. </p>
<p>Google has been the default search engine since 2004. But, according to Mozilla, "<span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, eBay, Amazon, Twitter and Wikipedia will continue to be built-in as alternate search options."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">Firefox is the third-most popular web browser, with between 14% and 19% market share, depending who's talking.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">According to Mozilla, 100 billion searches are conducted per year using Firefox. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">Yahoo has been making a big push to improve its search product. In April, Re/code reported that <a href="http://recode.net/2014/04/16/marissa-mayers-secret-plan-to-get-apple-to-dump-google-and-default-to-yahoo-mobile-search/">Yahoo had a secret plan</a> to get Apple to dump Google as the default search in its iOS devices and use Yahoo instead. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;">The financial details of the deal weren't disclosed. According to AllThingsD, the most recent renewal of the deal it had with Google in 2011 was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111222/google-will-pay-mozilla-almost-300m-per-year-in-search-deal-besting-microsoft-and-yahoo/">$300 million per year</a> for three years. In 2012, <a href="http://www.infoworld.com/article/2609538/open-source-software/who--still--pays-mozilla-s-bills--google--mainly.html">97.9% of Mozilla's revenue</a> came through partnerships with search engins, according to Infoworld.</span></p>

Firefox Dumps Google For Yahoo

<p><div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source">Whisper</p><p class="caption">Whisper CEO Michael Heyward</p></div></div>Whisper, the app for sharing secrets and thoughts anonymously, just raised a $21 million Series B round led by <keyword id="122716" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sequoia-Capital">Sequoia Capital</keyword>, with participation from Lightspeed and Trinity.</p>
<p>As part of the round, Roeloff Bohta of Sequoia Capital will be joining the board.</p>
<p>The round brings Whisper's total funding to $25 million. </p>
<p>Whisper is an app that lets you share photos and text completely anonymously. A "whisper" in the app can be your deepest darkest secret or just something funny you'd like to share without anyone knowing you were the one who shared it.</p>
<p>In a way, Whisper is the anti-Facebook. Nothing you post is attached to your identity and you don't have to worry about privacy settings.</p>
<p>You can try Whisper on <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/whisper-share-express-meet/id506141837?mt=8">iPhone</a> and <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sh.whisper&amp;hl=en">Android</a>.</p>
<p>Since launching in May 2012, Whisper has grown steadily. Last month, Whisper had around 2.5 billion page views.</p>
<p>But what's really significant about the round and Whisper's growth is that it signifies a major change happening in tech right now.</p>
<p>In light of PRISM, people are especially hesitant to share a bunch of their private data with a tech company. That's why in the last year or so, we've started to see more companies, some with great traction, pop up. </p>
<p>Think about the fast-growing, self-destructing photo and video app Snapchat, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snapchats-founders-pocket-10-million-in-addition-to-the-60-million-round-2013-6">which raised $60 million this summer at a $800 million pre-money valuation</a>. Then look at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-surging-2013-9">surge in Bitcoin</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/duckduckgo-hit-a-record-high-this-week-2013-6">DuckDuckGo queries</a>, a search engine that doesn't track you across the Web.</p>

<p>Back in the Web 1.0 days, everything was very anonymous, but it had a bit of a nefarious vibe to it. Parents would often fear weird strangers would target their kids in chatrooms.</p>
<p>So then there was a push toward having one single identity on the Web and managing your reputation. But as a result, people got upset about their user data and fear how it will get used and tied back to them.</p>
<p>"Culturally, there's a very clear major shift going on," Heyward says. "We're so overstimulated with content about how great everyone else's lives are. Even though a lot of these networks are meant to connect us, they make us feel more disconnected."</p>
<p>That's why Whisper aims to give people a place to see the world differently. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">But that's not to say that people will stop using sites like Facebook and Twitter, where your identity is tied to your username.</span></p>
<p>"No one would care about sharing secrets on Whisper if they didn't feel like there was this place that was inauthentic," Heyward says. "It's the yin and the yang. You can't have one without the other."</p>
<p>What really excites investors, Heyward says, is that most social apps are based around sharing things with people you already know. Whisper on the other hand, doesn't rely on someone's personal identity.</p>
<p>Whisper is also generating a treasure trove of data. Based on the millions of Whispers generated in the app, the company knows that more people talk about rape in Chicago than in anywhere else in the country. But just to be clear, people share a wide range of content on Whisper. Scrolling through app, you may come across a secret about someone crushing on their professor, or a Whisper from an active soldier about training for war. </p>
<p>Down the road, Whisper plans to make it easier for people to search for whispers based on text, sentiment, and location. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">A lot of the money, Heyward says, will be used to scale up the infrastructure and backend.</span></p>

VCs Bet $21 Million That You'll Want To Start Sharing Stuff Online Anonymously

<p>This war will be fierce. There are signs that companies like Yahoo, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft all regard Google's core search offering as a potential long-term weakness if it doesn't evolve fast enough.</p>
<p>When people think about Google and search, they don't think "weakness." Google dominates search, consistently fielding around 70% of all searches on the web.</p>
<p>The problem is that those searches are <em>on the web,</em> and increasingly humans need to find things that are <em>outside the web</em> or shielded from it.</p>
<p>There are a bunch of new things that Google is actually quite bad at searching, such as Facebook, Twitter, app stores, and data that lives inside apps. Those are not small areas of the online world - they're arguably the future of it.</p>
<p>One way to think about search is to regard it the way that humans will interact with machines in the future. Now, we need to find some information, so we punch keywords into Google's search box. A lot of people in tech, however, regard this as a feeble way to interact with machines. They look at old episodes of Star Trek, in which the characters talk with and interrogate the star ship's computer, and think that maybe most people would rather interact with machines like that: in normal, conversational language.</p>
<p>More than that, an intelligent machine would be able to anticipate your needs before you request them - making the overt act of searching obsolete because the machine has already recognized the semantics, or meaning, of your behavior and figured out what information to present to you, when you need it.</p>
<p>Some examples:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.i-programmer.info/news/105-artificial-intelligence/6004-deep-learning-powers-bing-voice-input.html">Microsoft's Bing team has done a ton or research on voice search</a> using "deep neural networks," reducing the error rate and speeding up the response time to vocalized requests.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoo-acquired-aviate-search-2014-1">Yahoo recently launched Aviate</a>, its mobile app search and organization product that anticipates what apps you're going to need on your phone so that you don't have to swipe through several screens of apps that you rarely use.</li>
<li><a href="http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ie/2013/10/indexing-apps-just-like-websites.html">Google has launched a product that can search the inside of apps</a> - which are currently off limits to traditional search.</li>
<li>Facebook is developing an AI/speech recognition unit that hopes to use its vast database of Facebook posts to create smarter more intuitive responses to requests.</li>
<li>Apple has Siri, of course, its much derided personal assistant. (Google has Google Now, a competing product on Android.)</li>
<li>And there are a bunch of smaller companies that have all advanced search technology beyond keyword matching and link ranking: <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/20/why-do-people-keep-giving-foursquare-money/">Foursquare has the ability to handle complex, natural language</a> queries, according to Techcrunch; <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/10/07/disconnect-search-built-by-ex-google-and-ex-nsa-engineers-lets-you-use-google-bing-and-yahoo-without-tracking/?ncid=tcdaily">Disconnect has a "secret" search product</a> that hides your data while you search; <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jan/09/anonymous-search-tool-duckduckgo-1bn-queries-2013-google">DuckDuckGo does something similar</a> and has risen in popularity since the NSA domestic spying scandal; <a href="http://blog.jelly.co/post/72563498393/introducing-jelly">Jelly has a Q&amp;A based search product</a> that lets you crowdsource the answers you're looking for from other humans.</li>
</ul>
<p>All of these developments are taking place in such a way that threatens to peel off users from Google's core search product, or create new ways of doing things that bypass Google. If people stop needing to type in keywords to perform searches, then Google is screwed.</p>
<p>Google isn't stupid, of course. It's reacting and building its own alternative products, too. It recently updated its core <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/googles-new-humminbird-search-algorithm-2013-9">search algorithm to handle natural language requests. </a>Underestimate Google at your peril.</p>
<p>And we don't know what Google will use DeepMind for, of course. Google has a million things that AI could be applied to - from the giant industrial robots of Boston Dynamics, to driverless cars, to new phones from Motorola.</p>
<p>But one thing is obvious: Google is looking way beyond a world in which everyone continues to type words into a little box to get what they want.</p>

Google's DeepMind Acquisition Shows How Its Dominance Of Search Could Be A Long-Term Weakness 

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>In a memo to employees, Google disavows any wrongdoing or anticompetitive practices ahead of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-eu-decides-to-file-formal-charges-against-google-2015-4">tomorrow's expected antitrust charges from the European Union</a>, reports <a href="http://recode.net/2015/04/14/here-is-googles-internal-response-to-the-imminent-e-u-charges-memo/">Re/code</a>.</p><p>"<span>This is obviously very disappointing news, especially for the search team that has worked so hard to create a great experience for our users over the last 16 years," goes the memo in its introduction. </span></p><p><span>Disappointing is right - the legal process, which could take as long as a year or two as Google pleads its case, could result in the search giant getting fined $6 billion, or 10% of its global revenues. It's bad news for the tech giant all around. </span></p><p>At the heart of the case are the <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/inside-the-u-s-antitrust-probe-of-google-1426793274">complaints</a> from competing sites like Yelp, that claim <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-the-new-ftc-report-says-about-google-2015-3">Google essentially blackmailed them</a> into allowing the use of their content and product listings, at the risk of having their search results pushed further down search pages. </p><p><span>Google says that never happened, and in fact, its competitors are doing just fine no matter what Google may or may not have done. Thanks to mobile apps and a growing base of more educated users who know how to take their business elsewhere, Google says, consumers have plenty of options.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Competition online is thriving - despite what many of the complainants in this case allege," reads the memo.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The email includes a mention that the EU is also opening a preliminary investigation into Android over whether or not it violates antitrust laws to package Google apps on a Google phone. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Google says apps from competitors like Facebook and Microsoft are often bundled on Android handsets too, so it's not a huge cause for concern. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"<span>All told, consumers have a lot of choice - and they are exercising it," the memo reads.</span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">At its closing, the memo urges Googlers to stay silent about the proceedings outside of the company and stay the course as it builds its products. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That's going to be a tall order for Google, which is going to find itself under intense scrutiny for the next couple of years. And what we learn may not cast the tech company in the most flattering light.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here's the full text of the memo, as obtained by Re/code:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">Googlers -<br>As the Financial Times has just reported, the European Commission will tomorrow issue a Statement of Objections (SO) regarding the display and ranking of certain search results, in particular shopping. This is obviously very disappointing news, especially for the search team that has worked so hard to create a great experience for our users over the last 16 years.</br></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">First, a few facts about the SO process. An SO is not a final finding. It's a document in which the Commission staff sets out its preliminary arguments so that the company in question can respond. Expect some of the criticism to be tough. But remember, it's also an opportunity for Google to tell our side of the story. The back-and-forth over an SO can take some time (even a year or two), and in a number of cases has resulted in the Commission modifying their claims or settling the case. If the two sides cannot settle their differences, the Commission issues an infringement decision, which can be appealed in court.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">We have a very strong case, with especially good arguments when it comes to better services for users and increased competition:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">Better services for users: Google Search has improved tremendously since the days of ten blue links. We can now answer many queries directly, saving users huge amounts of time and effort-whether it's the weather, directions to the local pharmacy, flights, or where to get the cheapest camera.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">Increased competition:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">The competition is just one click away - and it's growing. People can use Bing, Yahoo, Quora, DuckDuckGo, and a new wave of search assistants like Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana, as well as more specialized services like Amazon, Idealo, Le Guide, Expedia, or eBay. In addition, users increasingly turn to social networks like Facebook and Twitter to find news and suggestions - where to eat or which movies to watch.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">Mobile is changing everything - with the explosion of apps taking people directly to the information they want. Today 7 out of every 8 minutes on mobile devices is spent within apps. Yelp, for example, has said that over 40% of its traffic comes direct from its mobile app.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;" data-wr_replaced="true">Competition online is thriving - despite what many of the complainants in this case allege.
