No additional injuries have been reported.</li></ul><p>Authorities at a California military base responded to reports of an active shooter Tuesday morning.</p><p>The US Marine Corps said in a statement on Twitter Tuesday that it was "aware" of reports of an active shooter at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Training Center - Twentynine Palms, adding in a follow-up tweet that military police first responded to reported gunshots in the area at around 6:30 a.m. local time.</p><p>Capt. Nicole Plymale, a public affairs officer at the base, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/active-shooter-california-marine-corps-base">told Fox News</a> that authorities cornered the suspect in a cordoned off area of the base and were in contact with the individual.</p><p>In a later update, the Corps said that an individual suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound at around 8:30 a.m. local time and is being moved to a local medical facility for treatment. No other injuries have been reported.</p><p>A shelter-in-place order that was in effect for the base has since been lifted, and the incident is under investigation.</p><p>Twentynine Palms is located in the Mojave Desert in Southern California and is the largest US  Marine Corps base in the world at just over 930 square miles.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>US Marines said they were not defeated by their British counterparts in a recent training exercise.</li><li>The Marine Corps pushed back after a report claimed its troops were badly beaten by Royal Marines.</li></ul><p>US Marines said they did not lose to British Royal Marines <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-marines-surrender-royal-marines-half-way-through-exercise-report-2021-11">during a joint training exercise</a> held in the Mojave Desert last week, pushing back on reports that they were "dominated" in a mock battle.</p><p>The simulated encounter between the two nations was not designed to have "winners," the US Marine Corps said in an emailed statement to Insider.</p><p>"Exercise scenarios are adjusted as needed to assist commanders in meeting training objectives," the email said.</p><p>"This exercise does not provide an opportunity to 'surrender,' 'keep score,' or 'reset.' The objective of the exercise is to heighten unit performance and increase readiness." </p><p><a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/11/02/royal-marines-force-us-troops-surrender-just-hours-training/">Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper</a> reported Tuesday that US Marines were driven into submission in the five-day exercise.</p><p>It said that US forces surrendered and asked to "reset" and that the UK troops had scored highly while US Marines struggled - claims which the official statement disputed.</p><p>After the Telegraph report began to circulate, the official US Marine Corps twitter account published a message celebrating the bond between US Marines and Royal Marines, noting that joint training benefitted everyone involved.</p><p>The UK Royal Navy - the service branch which incorporates the Royal Marines - had a different story to the US, saying that its forces did win in the training,</p><p>A spokesperson yesterday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-marines-surrender-royal-marines-half-way-through-exercise-report-2021-11">told Insider's Bill Bostock</a> that the UK had a decisive victory and ended up controlling 65% of the battle area in the exercise.</p><p>A Royal Marines twitter account also <a href="https://twitter.com/40commando/status/1454329291060269056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1454329291060269056%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fus-marines-surrender-royal-marines-half-way-through-exercise-report-2021-111-11">celebrated what it called the British "triumph."</a></p><p>Exercise Green Dagger took place over a 3,500-square-kilometer zone at the US Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms, California.</p><p>It involved units from the US facing UK counterparts, who were helped by troops from the Netherlands, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates, the press release said.</p>

Charles "Chuck" Mawhinney.</li><li>Mawhinney is the deadliest sniper in Marine Corps history, with 103 confirmed kills.</li></ul><p>The Marine Corps recently honored a rifle and scope long used by its snipers, including one of the service's deadliest marksmen.</p><p>The Weapons Training Battalion (WBTN) at Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune has chosen "Redfield" as the call word for the Stone Bay ranges in recognition of the impact the M40 rifle equipped with a Redfield 3x9x40 scope has had on Marine Corps history.</p><p>Call words are a standard part of range control. Other examples include "Bearmat" at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twenty-nine Palms and "Longrifle" at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.</p><p>"Redfield" was chosen for the Stone Bay ranges because WBTN specializes in marksmanship, <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/389590/wtbn-establishes-call-word-redfield-battalion-firing-desk-during-renaming-ceremony">the Corps said in a post on the naming ceremony</a>. It was also chosen because it celebrates the history of Marine Corps marksmanship.</p><p>"We must remember where we came from," a retired Marine told the Corps. "Those marksmanship skills we've honed over the many years, we must continue to grow and make them better."</p><div type="image" title="Charles Mawhinney" height="1106" width="800" msid="81181239" hostid="261"></div><p>The modern Marine Corps sniper program was born in the jungles of Vietnam, when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-the-legendary-marksman-every-marine-sniper-trains-to-be-2020-12">legends like Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock, Master Sgt. Eric England, and Sgt. Chuck Mawhinney</a> proved just how effective a marksman trained in the art of stealth, camouflage and concealment could be in battle.</p><p>For the Marines, Hathcock is by far the most famous of the legendary snipers. He had 93 confirmed kills with countless more unconfirmed, he set a record for the longest kill shot that held until the early 2000s, and he was a pioneer alongside others like Maj. Edward James Land in Marine Corps sniper training.</p><p>It was long thought that Hathcock, armed with his Winchester Model 70 .30-06 caliber rifle equipped with an 8-power Unertl scope, was the deadliest sniper in Marine Corps history, but that title belongs to Mawhinney.</p><p>The sergeant primarily waged war in Vietnam with one of the new M40 sniper rifles, a modified version of the Model 700 Remington 7.62mm bolt-action rifle that was first introduced in 1966. The early Marine Corps M40s were equipped with Redfield 3-to-9-power scopes.</p><div type="image" title="Charles Mawhinney" height="1570" width="1000" msid="81181241" hostid="261"></div><p>Mawhinney is the son of a World War II Marine veteran. He joined the Corps in the summer of 1967 and trained as a scout sniper before he deployed overseas.</p><p>He spent almost a year and a half in Vietnam, but when he returned home to Oregon in 1969, he kept the details of his service a secret. Mawhinney was not recognized as a Marine Corps legend until more than two decades later.</p><p>In the early 1990s, former Marine sniper Joseph Ward credited Mawhinney with setting a Marine Corps record with 101 confirmed kills in his book "Dear Mom: A Sniper's Vietnam."</p><p>Further investigation, however, revealed the number to be inaccurate. Mawhinney actually had 103 confirmed kills, along with 216 probable kills.</p><p>Mawhinney's rules of engagement were simple. "If they had a weapon, they were going down," <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-jan-22-mn-56566-story.html">he previously told The Los Angeles Times</a>. The sniper believed that with each kill, he was saving the lives of his brothers in arms.</p><p>One of the things that haunted Mawhinney after he returned home from war was an enemy soldier that slipped away after a Marine armorer made adjustments to his rifle, affecting his shot.</p><p>"I can't help thinking about how many people that he may have killed later, how many of my friends, how many Marines," <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-jan-22-mn-56566-story.html">he said in an interview</a>. The service is currently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-marines-and-special-operators-all-want-this-sniper-rifle-2020-2">looking at the Barrett Multi-Role Adaptive Design (MRAD) rifle</a> as a replacement for all bolt-action rifles.</p>

Eventually, the Pentagon removed all restrictions on women in 2015.</p><p>Since the course opened up, more than 30 female officers have attempted it and failed. Watch these US Marines accidentally sink their LAV

<p>The details of how a 20-year-old Marine died during a training accident back in March were recently released by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/article/20140110/NEWS/301100019/NCIS-Marine-crushed-by-bulldozer-he-slept-foxhole" target="_blank">reports the Marine Corps Times</a>.</p>
<p>Private First Class Casey James Holmes, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment from Marine Corps Base Hawaii was asleep in a shallow, hand-dug foxhole, when a bulldozer crushed him at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.</p>
<p>After filing three Freedom of Information Act requests,<a href="http://www.chicoer.com/news/ci_24859457/investigators-finally-release-details-chico-marines-death"> the Chico Enterprise Record </a>recently obtained the 128-page Naval Criminal Investigative Service report. </p>
<p>According to the report, the foxholes were overtaken by a unit of amphibious assault vehicles that were taking part in the same exercise. </p>
<p>"As we relaxed in our holes, Holmes commented about how many stars were visible out there and how he missed the California sunsets and how I needed to visit his home in Chico, Calif. and meet his family and friends," a Marine said in a statement included in the report.</p>
<p>"I remember asking Holmes something but don't remember what and noticed he was already asleep. Next thing I know, I woke up to bright lights and dust in the air," the Marine said in the statement.</p>
<p>The lead bulldozer came to a stop on top of Holmes, who was inside a sleeping bag in his foxhole. The driver of the dozer told the NCIS, he "stopped the medium crawler tractor (MCT) and opened the door of the driver's compartment and a Marine screamed at me to drive the MCT forward about five to seven feet." After moving the dozer, the driver shut it down, "It looked as if I had driven the MCT over someone. I heard several voices yelling for a corpsman to give aid to the person to the rear of the MCT."</p>
<p>According to the NCIS report, an unidentified battalion surgeon was some distance away at the aid station when word of the emergency was radioed in. After multiple CPR attempts, he used a stethoscope to check for a beating heart. Marine Pfc. Casey Holmes was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m. on March 11th.</p>
<p>Holmes was scheduled for deployment to Southeast Asia after his course at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.</p>

Bulldozer Crushes Marine Sleeping In Foxhole

Francisco Jimenez fires an M4 carbine during marksmanship-sustainment training in Mosul, Iraq, September 29, 2010.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>The Army has discontinued its plans to develop the Interim Combat Service Rifle.</strong></li><li><strong>The ICSR was meant to replace the M4/M16 for some units until a long-term replacement was ready.</strong></li></ul><p><br />The Army has officially scrapped its search for a short-term replacement for the M4/M16 rifle platform.</p><p>Funds for the Interim Combat Service Rifle have been redirected to the long-term project to design the Next Generation Squad Weapon, which will replace the current rifle platform for good. <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2017/11/29/army-cancels-short-term-rifle-replacement-program/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Military Times</a> spotted the announcement on <a href="https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&amp;mode=form&amp;tab=core&amp;id=ba8a6497fbaff18657be89db17131024&amp;_cview=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a post</a> on the federal business opportunities website this week.</p><p>"Resulting from a change in strategy, the Government is reallocating the ICSR funding to the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW). The NGSW will be a long term solution to meet the identified capability gap instead of the ICSR, which was an interim solution," the post says.</p><p>When it officially announced the project in August, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-launch-competition-for-a-new-more-powerful-combat-rifle-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Army said</a> it was looking for up to 50,000 commercially available rifles of 7.62 mm caliber.</p><p>"The Army has identified a potential gap in the capability of ground forces and infantry to penetrate body armor using existing ammunition," the August 4 notice said. "To address this operational need, the Army is looking for an Interim Combat Service Rifle (ICSR) that is capable of defeating emerging threats."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Marine Corps/Lance Cpl. Danny Gonzalez</span></p><p class="caption">A US Marine fires a M27 infantry automatic rifle during an exercise at Twentynine Palms, California, Aug. 18, 2016</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Current and former Army officials <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-chief-the-infantry-needs-a-new-762-mm-rifle-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have said</a> for some time that the range and stopping power of the 5.56 mm round currently in use <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/efforts-to-change-the-us-militarys-arsenal-get-boost-in-congress-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">underperform</a> that of rounds used by adversaries.</p><p>The M4/M16 platform has also been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-army-is-scrapping-its-plans-for-a-new-more-powerful-rifle-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticized</a>, in part because of concerns about jamming and overheating.</p><p>Most soldiers and Marines <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2017/09/21/army-rifle-replacement-program-canceled-before-it-takes-off/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">carry</a> M4s, M16s, or M27s that fire 5.56 mm rounds. Specialized personnel, like machine-gunners or snipers, already use weapons that fire rounds of 7.62 mm or some other caliber.</p><p>The ICSR was seen as a near-term replacement for the M4/M16 to be distributed to selected units - those more likely to face combat - until the NGSW could be developed and implemented. The Army <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-launch-competition-for-a-new-more-powerful-combat-rifle-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has said</a> that not every soldier would be outfitted with a 7.62 mm rifle.</p><p>In June 2013, the Army <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-army-is-scrapping-its-plans-for-a-new-more-powerful-rifle-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ended a competition</a> to replace the M4 without selecting a winner. The more recent ICSR program also took several twists during is short life.</p><p>In September, it was first reported by The Firearms Blog that the Army was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-army-is-scrapping-its-plans-for-a-new-more-powerful-rifle-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scrapping the 7.62 mm ICSR plan</a>. No official reason was given at the time, but The Firearms Blog cited sources saying it was canceled because of a lack of a pressing threat, poor written requirements, and little support from rank-and-file troops or in the <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">Defense</keyword> Department.</p><p>Shortly after that report, however, Army Brig. Gen. Brian Cummings - who, as the Army's Program Executive Office Soldier, oversees the programs that provide most of a soldier's gear and weapons - said the service <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/armys-program-executive-officer-interim-combat-service-rifle-plans-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was still evaluating</a> a short-term stand-in for the M4/M16.</p><p>"It's not dead," he <a href="https://kitup.military.com/2017/09/interim-service-combat-rifle.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Military.com</a> of the ICSR plan. "But that's not the long-term way ahead. The long-term way ahead is a brand new rifle for all of the Department of Defense called the Next Generation Squad Weapon."</p><p>Cummings <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/armys-program-executive-officer-interim-combat-service-rifle-plans-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compared</a> the NGSW program to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/army-upgrades-soldier-machine-guns-rifles-sidearms-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Modular Handgun System</a>, which developed and introduced a new sidearm for the Army: "It'll be one complete system, with weapon, magazine, ammo and fire control on it and we will cut down on the load and integration issues associated with it."</p><p>The NGSW would be "<a href="https://www.army.mil/article/194787/modular_handgun_to_begin_fielding_before_christmas" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">one end-all solution</a>," he added, with a carbine model replacing the M4 and a rifle version replacing the M249 squad automatic weapon. The weapon would likely fire a caliber between 5.56 and 7.62 mm. The Army has officially ditched its plans for a new, short-term rifle replacement

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>US President Donald Trump's <a href="http://comptroller.defense.gov/Portals/45/Documents/defbudget/fy2017/marchAmendment/FY17_March_Amendment.pdf" target="_blank">budget proposal is in</a>, and it calls for a "<a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-budget-idUSKBN1661R2" target="_blank">historic</a>" $54 billion increase in <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">defense</keyword> spending, and an additional $30 billion in Overseas Contingency Operations spending this year. </p><p>"This is a hard power budget, it is not a soft power budget," Mick Mulvaney told reporters at a Wednesday briefing. "And that was done intentionally. That's what our allies can expect. That's what our adversaries can expect."</p><h2>So what does Trump want to spend the additional $84 billion on? </h2><p>The Army wants $8.3 billion, which includes $871 million for increasing readiness, $1.3 billion for "enhanced and more realistic training," $2.8 billion to restore and modernize equipment in aviation, armor, drones, and air and missile defense systems, and another $1.2 billion for US combat commanders to fight ISIS.</p><p>Additionally, more than $2 billion will go to addressing shortfalls, infrastructure readiness, and ammunition.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Navy wants $8.3 billion to "drive rapid improvements in ship, aviation, and shore readiness."</p><p>This includes buying 24 F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters, increasing maintenance and spare parts, and adding 14,000 flight hours. The funding will also go towards increasing ship operations, information warfare, modernizing infrastructure, and providing services to sailors' families. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Marine Corps, a part of the Navy, wants $1.1 billion to increase readiness and "mitigate critical gaps in combat power," such as addressing threats from drones and long range percision fires. The funding will also address troubles in Marine aviation. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Air Force, at its smallest size in 70 years, requests $7.4 billion to grow the force by 4,000 airmen and address a "national pilot crisis," upgrade the F-16, build and improve existing infrastructure, and improve counter-drone operations.  </p><p>The force also wants to spend $690.5 million to procure five additional F-35s. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In total, Trump's proposed budget fits with his campaign promise to fix what he called a "crumbling" military. While the proposed defense budget represents a historic increase, the conditions that led to the military's depletion was historic as well - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/budget-control-act-2016-8" target="_blank">sequestration</a>, which froze military spending at 2011 levels. </p><p><span>In constant 2014 dollars, US military spending peaked in 2010, at just under </span><a href="https://www.sipri.org/sites/default/files/Milex-constant-USD.pdf" target="_blank">$758 billion dollars</a><span>. Mark Milley <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-launch-competition-for-a-new-more-powerful-combat-rifle-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told Congress</a> that the M4's M8551 Enhanced Performance Round could not penetrate body armor similar to that issued by the Army. Milley also said it was not necessary for every soldier to get a new rifle, just the infantry units <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-chief-the-infantry-needs-a-new-762-mm-rifle-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">most likely to be rapidly deployed</a>.</p><p>The M4/M16 platform had also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/m4-rifle-has-some-serious-failings-2014-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">come in for criticism</a>, in part because of concerns about jamming and overheating.</p><p>Discussion about a new Army rifle has been going since this spring. In mid-May, Retired Army Maj. Gen. Robert Scales - who called the M4 and M16 "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/efforts-to-change-the-us-militarys-arsenal-get-boost-in-congress-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">terribly flawed</a>" - and retired Army Lt. Gen. John Bednarek appeared to persuad some members of the Senate that a new rifle and round were needed.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS</span></p><p class="caption">A US Army Ranger test fires his M4 carbine rifle during marksmanship training for Filipino scout rangers taking part in joint military exercises in Isabela, on Basilan Island in the southern Philippines, April 18, 2002.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But as first <a href="http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/09/20/breaking-army-7-62mm-rifle-program-cancelled-icsr-no/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a> by The Firearm Blog and <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2017/09/21/army-rifle-replacement-program-canceled-before-it-takes-off" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">confirmed</a> by Army Times, the Army has cancelled the nascent program that would've swapped the M4 for a rifle chambered in 7.62 mm ammunition.</p><p>No official reason was given, but The Firearms Blog cited sources saying the the plan was scrapped due to the lack of a pressing threat, poor written requirements, and little support from rank-and-file troops or in the <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">Defense</keyword> Department. In June 2013, the Army ended a competition to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/army-kills-competition-to-replace-rifle-2013-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">replace the M4</a> without selecting a winner.</p><p>While the Army is <a href="https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2017/09/21/army-rifle-replacement-program-canceled-before-it-takes-off" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">working on</a> an ammunition-and-rifle combo between 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm caliber to replace the M4/M16 rifle platform, the ICSR will no longer be sought to stand in while that long-term plan goes on, Army Times said.</p><p>Most soldiers are equipped with M4s, M16s, or M27s firing 5.56 mm. The Army is scrapping its plans for a new, more powerful rifle

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Army photo by Lewis Perkins</span></p><p class="caption">A soldier outfitted with the US Army's Modular Handgun System during tests at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, August 27, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Army plans to start distributing its new Modular Handgun System, the Sig Sauer P320, to soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, this fall.</p><p>The rollout would come <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-army-has-released-photos-of-soldiers-testing-out-its-new-handgun-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">less than a year after</a> the Army awarded the $580 million contract to Sig Sauer to produce the gun, also called the XM17.</p><p>And Marine Corps officials <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/18/marines-evaluating-new-compact-handgun/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">have said</a> their personnel may soon adopt a more compact version of the pistol, called the XM18.</p><p>Chief Warrant Office 5 Christian Wade, the small-arms expert for the 2nd Marine Division, <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/18/marines-evaluating-new-compact-handgun/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> Marine Corps Times that the service would perform a review in the near future to learn which positions need the new weapon.</p><p><span>"We prefer our pistol be as compact as possible without loss of capability," Wade <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/18/marines-evaluating-new-compact-handgun/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>. "After all, it's a pistol."</span></p><p><span>Earlier this month, the Army assembled soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen at Fort Bragg in North Carolina to put the new handgun <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-army-has-released-photos-of-soldiers-testing-out-its-new-handgun-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">through a round of testing</a>, using it alongside the M4 rifle and cold-weather gear.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Army photo by Lewis Perkins</span></p><p class="caption">A service member fires the Sig Sauer P320 during Modular Handgun System tests at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, August 27, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The Army-led training mainly featured soldiers from the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and Army officials have not said what other units were present.</span></p><p><span>Earlier this year, an official from the Marine Corps Capabilities Development Directorate's Maneuver Branch <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/18/marines-evaluating-new-compact-handgun/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> the Corps was taking part in the Army's Modular Handgun System selection effort in order facilitate its own search for a new sidearm.</span></p><p><span>The official also displayed a chart showing the Marine Corps' current side arms, the Beretta M9 and Colt M45A1, in service until 2025, overlapping with the XM17, which would come into service in 2023 and stay through 2035.</span></p><p><span>"As soon as the U.S. Army is ready to sell them to us," Wade <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/18/marines-evaluating-new-compact-handgun/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> of the XM18, "we will begin this program."</span></p><p><span>A new handgun is not the only change that may come to the Army and Marine Corps arsenals.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Marine Corps/Lance Cpl. Mike Manning, the chief of Marine Corps Systems Command's Ground Combat Element Systems, also said this week that the service would soon send a request for weapons suppressors from the arms industry, <a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/19/marines-want-integrated-suppressors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according</a> to Marine Corps Times.</span></p><p><span>Manning didn't talk numbers - noting only that the suppressors would be used "<a href="http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2017/09/19/marines-want-integrated-suppressors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">across the forces</a>" - or say whether the suppressor would be designed for the M4 or the M27, but he did say commercial suppressors were already being tested and suggested suppressors built into weapons would be preferred.</span></p><p><span>The Army and the Marine Corps have been evaluating suppressors for regular infantry as a way to add stealth and boost tactical capabilities. The Marine Corps is following the Army's lead and looking to change its arsenal

Danny Gonzalez</span></p><p class="caption">A US Marine fires an M27 infantry automatic rifle during a training exercise at Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, August 18, 2016.</p><p>The US military's efforts to upgrade its infantry arsenal appeared to get a boost last week, when a group of senators questioned two retired generals about the need for the change and the delays hindering it.</p><p>Both the US Army and the Marine Corps are reportedly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-marines-infantry-rifle-ammunition-changes-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">looking to replace the M4/M16 rifle platform</a>, in use in various forms since the 1960s, as well as the 5.56 mm caliber bullet, in response to concerns about their effectiveness on the battlefield.</p><p>The M4, and the M16 before it, is "<span>a terribly flawed weapon," retired Army Maj. Gen. Robert Scales <a href="https://www.armed-services.senate.gov/hearings/17-05-17-united-states-military-small-arms-requirements" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told</a> a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on May 17. Scales said any improvements that could be made would only be marginal, due to shortcomings in the weapon's operating system.</span></p><p><span>The range and stopping power of the M4 and the 5.56 mm round are both seen as underperforming their competitors. </span><span>Studies have found that the 5.56 mm round <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-marines-infantry-rifle-ammunition-changes-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">is less lethal</a> at the range of a typical firefight in Afghanistan during the US military's more than 15 years there.</span></p><p><span>"Does the current M4 bullet penetrate current body armor on our adversaries?" Sen. Angus King asked Scales, who replied that it did not. "Isn't that the end of discussion?" King asked. "If it doesn't, we've got to have a new weapon."</span></p><p><span>The Marine Corps is currently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-marines-infantry-rifle-ammunition-changes-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">looking at replacing</a> the M4s carried by riflemen with the M27, while Army researchers are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-army-marines-infantry-rifle-ammunition-changes-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reportedly examining</a> several new rounds in the 6.5 mm to 7 mm range.</span></p><p><span></span></p><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/marine_corps/21895770594/">US Marine Corps Photo by Lance Cpl. John Bednarek both backed the changes.</p><p>"<span>Lethality is the primary factor that guides ... the capabilities that we need to develop," Bednarek said. "</span><span>We do not want near-peer competitors," he added. "We want overmatch … I'm not looking for a fair fight anywhere."</span></p><p>In addition to intermediate-size calibers, Scales <a href="https://www.armed-services.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Scales_05-17-17.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> the military should look at a modular weapon that could be customized for different environments.</p><p>Scales and Bednarek both pointed to bureaucratic hurdles in the military's acquisition process as a main reason for the delay in getting a new infantry rifle.</p><p>Scales said the same process used to develop new fighter jets was being used to a new rifle, which is a much less sophisticated piece of technology. He also referred to the military's emphasis on internally developed materials, rather than pursuing technology developed commercially, as a hindrance.</p><p><span>Both Scales and Bednarek said the military's practice of "pure fleeting" - equipping all personnel with the same weapon - was a stumbling block to rolling out a new weapons platform. And even though they said a new rifle and bullet combo was needed for all personnel, the troops who do the "<a href="https://www.armytimes.com/articles/lawmakers-press-for-better-rifles-bigger-bullets-for-soldiers-marines" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">nasty business</a>" of engaging the enemy should be the first to receive new weaponry.</span></p><p class="source"><span>(AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)</span></p><p class="caption">US Marine Lance Cpl.
