Streaming releases tripled from Q4 2019 to Q4 2020 and TVOD releases grew by nearly four times in the same period. The increase was noticeable starting in Q3 2020 when the pandemic continued to upend any plans for theaters to return to normalcy.Even though many theaters in the US reopened in August after being closed for five months, 133 movies went straight to streaming services and 132 went straight to TVOD platforms. In Q2, there were 84 released on streaming and 50 released on TVOD. Reelgood only counted movies that hit streaming and digital-rental platforms within 14 days of their theatrical release, if they had one. So, straight-to-streaming releases like "Soul" and day-and-date releases like "Wonder Woman 1984" were counted. Netflix originals like "Project Power" were counted. But other Netflix movies like "Mank" and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" that had limited theatrical releases more than 14 days prior to streaming on Netflix weren't counted. Disney debuted its live-action "Mulan" remake on Disney Plus for an additional $30 fee and in theaters in international territories where it's not available.It then released the Pixar movie "Soul" straight to Disney Plus at no extra cost for subscribers in December. But even after the pandemic, it's likely that studios and theaters would work together on hybrid models. The pandemic has accelerated many shifts in the movie business. "I think the old window concept was so outdated," Harold Mintz, the president of the movie-research company CinemaScore, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cinemascore-president-interview-on-hollywood-theaters-streaming-2021-2">told Insider</a> during a recent interview. "The pandemic forced it, but it was bound to happen eventually ... most movies are played out [in theaters] after three weeks so it just makes sense."

New data breaks down the dramatic increase in movies that went straight to streaming or digital-rental platforms in 2020

The many challengers to the old-style TVs are dark homes, a growing laptop audience and last but not the least – India’s largest sporting property, IPL, going free on digital. From the pandemic-induced highs of 2020, there has been a 16% drop in overall <keyword id="659577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tv-viewership" source="Orion">TV viewership</keyword> in 2022, according to a recent FICCI-EY report on media and entertainment. “As digital media creates new ways to engage, and direct-to-consumer relationships are getting built, consumers are more than willing to try new media options and this is increasing cross-media consumption like never before,” the report said. Top-end connected homes The FICCI-EY report defines TV audiences under four different categories — those who watch only connected TV; digital-first homes that watch pay TV as well as have OTT or over-the-top subscriptions; the pay TV homes that also watch content online; the free TV homes and dark TV homes. Almost all these categories are seeing some sort of digital disruption, which is changing the patterns of viewership. At the top end is the smallest group of 2 million digital-only top-end homes with connected TV-only consumption. They do not have any linear TV connections via cable or direct-to-home (DTH), and watch OTTs and consume subscription-based content. In spite of its small size, this section is drawing new forms of advertisers. “Several platforms and manufacturers have started providing advertising services on their smart TV platforms to the extremely desirable ‘top of pyramid’ audience,” EY said. This is followed by 43 million digital-first homes with <keyword id="14701857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytv" source="Orion">payTV</keyword> as well as one or more subscription-video-on-demand (SVOD) services via OTTs. Time spent on linear television fell 7% in 2022 due to a fall in both Hindi and regional language viewership – indicating that a chunk of this segment might upgrade to the top end. As OTT aggregation increases, many TV channels stream live on TV and with the proliferation of 5G, this universe is all set to grow. Broadcaster monopoly is ending There is a large chunk of the audience at the cusp of linear TV and online-only viewing. The report says that there are 77 million pay TV homes which also consume advertising-video-on-demand (AVOD) services – basically YouTube kind of consumption and OTTs that offer free options without subscriptions. In the last few years, the pay TV universe has been shrinking, as more consumers shift from linear TV to bi-directional, which is broadband TV. Pay TV households are expected to decline by two million in 2023, before falling slowly to 116 million households by 2025. Its biggest competitors – smart TV sets – are growing. As many as 8-10 million TVs are being connected to the internet daily. Added to that, digital subscriptions grew 27% in 2022. In 2022, as many as 99 million paid video subscriptions across almost 45 million Indian households generated ₹6,800 crore. This is over 60% of broadcasters’ share of TV subscription revenues. “Smart connected TVs will exceed 40 million (daily active users) by 2025, thereby ending the monopoly of broadcasters on the large screen and leading to around 30% of content consumed on large screens to be social, gaming, digital, etc,” the report said. However, this form of digital subscription viewing also has a new set of competitors. “In addition, increased acceptance of permanent and temporary work-from-home culture has created a large ‘laptop audience’ – possibly a reason why second TV sets are not getting reconnected, and a good case for parity-pricing between linear feeds on TV and on OTT,” the report said. Movie channels lose their sheen, sports to follow The pandemic has changed the way Indians watch movies. Most of them released directly on OTTs that also had fresh, new and even exclusive movies, and film channels that heavily advertise ‘newly released’ movies lost ratings. The report says that movie-loving audiences have shifted from TV to OTT, for the sake of convenience. “As the habit of watching new films at home takes root for upper SEC audiences (which has been helped by the pandemic with direct-to-digital releases and shortening digital release windows), the TVOD film model can gain traction and can be a new window of opportunity,” the report says. TVOD stands for transactional video on demand that allows users to buy content on pay-per-view basis. SEC stands for socioeconomic classification. Another disruption is afoot in the sports viewership modes as we. As of now 44% of Indian sports fans watch live sports only on TV. A sizable 36% are using both traditional and digital media to watch live sports, and 20% watch exclusively on digital. As free digital streaming of high-end sports properties might change the trend as well. “With the announcement of IPL being provided free on digital streaming, we expect this viewership to increase significantly, and this could make it difficult to grow ad revenues on TV as viewership will split across platforms,” the report said. Free and dark TV homes The number of free TV homes – which consume free-to-air channels and no AVOD services – form the lower end of the market and total 45 million. Such homes are bogged down by costs and the lower socio-economic classes classified as NCCS CDE, saw the largest drop of 28% in TV viewership in 2022 from the pandemic-induced highs seen in 2020. “The fall in pay television homes has been attributed to both cord-cutting at the top end as well as movement to free television (DD FreeDish) at the bottom end of the customer pyramid,” the report said. The market also has 150 million dark homes which have no access to TV or OTT. While this segment is most likely to upgrade to free TV, high entry points might keep a few away. They might also move from a feature phone to a smartphone leapfrogging to a smaller but cheaper screen, leaving television behind.

Amazon Prime Video doubles down in India, announces over 40 titles, video-on-demand movie rental service

<ul><li><keyword id="54620" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="shemaroo">Shemaroo</keyword>, which began India’s first video rental business in 1979, has now launched its own transactional video on demand (TVOD) platform called <keyword id="7390865" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShemarooMe">ShemarooMe</keyword> <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office">Box Office</keyword>. </li><li>This feature acts as a virtual box office or theatre where films can first release and the audience can watch it after buying a ticket for it. </li><li>Gada believes this is just a chance for movies to get their box office collections before eventually going on to be available through platforms like TV or <keyword id="1245953" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="OTT">OTT</keyword>.</li></ul><keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar have all deemed India as the next big market for them, but most Indian masses might not be able to afford their subscription plans. These platforms then went for India-first cheap plans starting at ₹129, as well as mobile-only plans to woo the mass audience. But India’s oldest video rental platform, the 57-year old Shemaroo, has steered clear of competing with Reed Hastings or Jeff Bezos. Instead, it has taken a leaf out of the YouTube playbook. ShemarooMe Box Office, a transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) platform — simply put, an app where you can watch a newly-released movie on your mobile or TV at home and pay just for that— was launched in July 2020. This is a feature YouTube has had for a while but only for old movies, not for new releases. “What we are doing is the first transaction window for the film. Shemaroo has already released smaller films like Sharman Joshi’s Graham Staines, Ek Ankahi Sachai: The Least of These, the horror flick X Zone, The Hidden Strike, among others. This may bring a ray of hope for movie producers as they get an additional platform. Unlike Netflix, Shemaroo’s idea was born out of necessity after theatres have remained shut for over six months. The product was developed in 10 weeks, Gada shared. As people could stay away from theatres for a long time, no more ₹300 crore blockbusters are breaking the box office, and instead, films are making their way onto OTT platforms. Not only that, it will also break the iron grip of monopolistic distributors who have decided the fate of many movies with arbitrary decisions on the number of screens they would get. Even the reported revenue from every theatre has <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/bollywood/are-box-office-figures-an-enticement-for-the-audiences-or-mere-propaganda/story-b3Qn2T5Wz093VRITwRURBL.html">been less than transparent for years.</a> While Gada believes that people will definitely go back to theatres as it's more of a recreational activity, he added that with an option like ShemarooMe Box Office, a lot of the much dreaded ‘scheduling challenges’ can be solved. Gada explains that their latest product will also offer regional movies to get a bigger audience. “There are so many films that die because another A-lister’s movie is releasing, these films have a very short window to rake in as many collections as they can. With the ShemarooMe Box Office, they can get a second chance. So, even once the theatrical journey is done, the film can still reach a wider audience,” he said. Gada believes that even as theatres reopen, this won’t reduce the dependence on an opening weekend collection; instead, it will help producers to extend their collections beyond show timings and limited capacities of theatres. “There is a large consumer base which looks out for the latest <keyword id="18940" type="EVENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="movie-release">movie release</keyword> and was missing the theatre experience. For producers too, theatre is the starting point of the film’s journey and box office defines the film’s success. So we put both their needs together,” said Hiren Gada, CEO, Shemaroo. Through the app, filmmakers will now also know how many people paid to watch a new release. The company is in talks with producers, and Gada hopes they will lap up the idea.
