However, it stressed that this is not enough for a 'mobile first' country. The Forum said that it is unfortunate that as many as 45,180 villages in India do not have any 4G coverage at all. "While this upgradation in minimum broadband speed is indeed a big milestone, India still has a long way to go to catch up with major regimes like the US where the regulator (FCC) has already prescribed a minimum broadband speed of 25Mbps," said the BIF. Even Bangladesh has prescribed a higher minimum broadband speed of 5Mbps. Still, the move will help in lifting the overall quantum of per capita data consumption and improve the service experience. Being a 'mobile first' country, India heavily relies on mobile broadband with almost 98 per cent of the broadband users accessing it via their mobile phones. "2Mbps may not sound good enough for the modern broadband era as one would need much higher speeds for satisfactory experience in applications viz. telecommuting, file downloading, video conferencing, streaming video - both SD &amp; HD," said <keyword id="1146565" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tv-ramachandran" source="Orion">TV Ramachandran</keyword>, President, BIF. Nevertheless, "this strong nudge provided by the government will definitely help ensure improved consumer experience and consumer satisfaction," <keyword id="90527" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramachandran" source="Orion">Ramachandran</keyword> added. The move will particularly benefit consumers in rural areas, suburban areas and fringes of metros who are heavy video consumers and rely more on video and data-rich apps. "Studies have shown that for experiencing good quality of video streaming one needs to have download speeds much in excess of even 5Mbps and probably nearer values of 14Mbps or 15Mbps," said the BIF. India raises broadband speed to 2Mbps but even Bangladesh offers 5Mbps

Its latest plan involves Comcast, according to <a href="http://stream.wsj.com/story/latest-headlines/SS-2-63399/SS-2-489093/">a new report from Shalini Ramachandran, Daisuke Wakabayashi, Amol Sharma at the Wall Street Journal</a>.
Apple is talking to Comcast about using Apple TV, the little box for streaming video as a cable box that streams video.

Cisco's ability to block them.The networking industry, dominated by Cisco, is undergoing a huge change right now called "software-defined networking" where software is being used to set up and control computer networks. Cisco still makes most of its money selling hardware products.SDN is the most exciting thing to happen in corporate networks since, perhaps, Cisco itself was born, and networking engineers have been leaving Cisco in droves to launch new SDN startups. CloudGenix is one of those startups. They would say yes, we have a conference room available and when we would submit the details like our company name, we got declined," Ramachandran told us. Turns out, Cisco Live is so big, Cisco held dibs on all of Mandalay Bay and on at least two other hotels on the strip as well.When CloudGenics asked them why they were getting rejected, the hotels told them, "it was Cisco that was rejecting us," Ramachandran said.The CloudGenix teams turned to restaurants, many of which are independent from the hotels, and booked the Aureole Restaurant, at the Mandalay Bay.But two days before the event, a restaurant manager called CloudGenix telling CloudGenix it needed cancel its event. The reason? Pressure from Cisco, the manager told Ramachandran."We had contracts drawn up. We paid several thousands dollars, paid for projectors, for food, drinks. Our employees are flying in, customers are flying in. You can't cancel two days before an event," Ramachandran responded.In the end, the restaurant honored most of the contract, but it weirdly refused to provide the projectors and microphones, again citing Cisco as the reason.Ramachandran found some mikes and some large TV screens and the event took place. The paid version, which until recently was called Hulu Plus, has more programming, and allows for viewing on other devices, like game consoles, mobile phones and tablets, and streaming boxes that connect to your TV, like Roku and Apple TV.But both the free and paid tiers have ads, something that paying subscribers have long complained about, especially as ad-free streaming services from Netflix and Amazon have continued to improve. Hulu, which is co-owned by Comcast's NBCUniversal, FOX, and Disney, and is only available in the US, said in April that it has nearly nine million paying subscribers. Netflix announced on Wednesday that it has more than 41 million paying subscribers in the US, and 62 million worldwide.The service, which like Netflix and Amazon is developing its own original programming to attract subscribers, recently licensed all nine seasons of "Seinfeld." Spiegel said Snapchat is getting about one of these per day right now, but that this will grow through the end of the year. Snapchat's new TV-style 'Shows' are drawing audiences of over 8 million people, according to CEO Evan Spiegel

Just recently, it signed a $160 million deal for the rights to Seinfeld, while it made content deals with FX and AMC as well. It's also expanded into producing original series like "Difficult People."This isn't the first time Hulu was involved in a rumored sale. In 2013, DirecTV was rumored to be acquiring the company, while Apple was also reported to be interested in bidding for Hulu's online streaming TV service in 2011.By adding on another content provider like Time Warner on its ownership team, Hulu will be better positioned to compete against Netflix in the online video streaming space. Netflix shares closed down 3.5% Thursday, and about another 1% in afterhours.But Hulu still lags far behind Netflix in its number of subscribers. Here's what Snapchat's big push for TV-like 'shows' will look like

Amid the heated debate on allowing enterprises to build captive private 5G networks as <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> prepares for 5G spectrum auction, <keyword id="6354287" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bharti-airtel" source="Orion">Bharti Airtel</keyword> on Friday announced a successful trial of India's first 5G private network at <keyword id="58925" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bosch" source="Orion">Bosch</keyword> Automotive Electronics India (RBAI) facility here. The on-premise 5G Captive Private Network was built over the trial 5G spectrum allocated by the <keyword id="62528" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="department-of-telecom" source="Orion">Department of Telecom</keyword> (DoT). <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> said it has implemented two industrial grade use cases for quality improvement and operational efficiency at Bosch's manufacturing facility, utilising the trial spectrum. In both the cases, 5G technology such as mobile broadband and ultra reliable low latency communications drove automated operations ensuring faster scale up and reduced downtimes. "We believe that Airtel has the world-class infrastructure, partnerships and expertise to deliver Captive Private Network Solution in any part of the country and to enterprises of any size," said Ajay Chitkara, Director and CEO, Airtel Business. The Department of Telecom has released a notice inviting applications (NIA) for the auction of spectrum in 600, 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2500, 3300 MHz and 26GHz bands. The NIA provides explicit clarity on the subject of Captive Non-Public Networks (CNPN). The private network set up on trial spectrum at the Bosch facility has the capability to manage thousands of connected devices along with delivering multi- GBPS throughput, said Airtel. "The low latency and reliable connectivity provided by the Airtel Private 5G network at our facility which was experienced during the proof of concept is enabling us to enhance our efficiency and our productivity," said Subhash P., Head of <keyword id="14462387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="technical-functions" source="Orion">Technical Functions</keyword>, Bosch Automotive Electronics India. Last year, Airtel successfully demonstrated India's first 5G experience over a live 4G network in Hyderabad. It has also demonstrated India's first rural 5G trial as well as the first cloud gaming experience on 5G. Meanwhile, the Broadband India Forum (BIF) on Friday said the choice of service provider for captive private 5G networks must lie with the enterprises. "The enterprises would have to make do with whatever is offered by the telecom service providers (TSPs), whether satisfactory or not," said BIF President T.V. Ramachandran. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the industry's apex body representing telcos, on Thursday urged the government not to allow Big Tech companies to enter the 5G spectrum auction this month via back door channels. The COAI said in a statement that the 5G spectrum should not be provided on an administrative basis as it leads to no business case for the rollout of 5G networks in the country. "The HSBC Flash China Manufacturing PMI reading for March suggests that China's growth momentum continued to slow down," Hongbin Qu, HSBC China's chief economist said in press release. "Weakness is broadly-based with domestic demand softening further."
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-stimulus-2014-3">Softer landing.</a> AFP now says Chinese authorities are likely to begin enacting stimulus measures to tone down any threat of a hard landing. " 'The government needs to take quick action in view of its growth target of about 7.5 percent,' Barclays Capital said in an analysis of the PMI data. Zhang Zhiwei, economist at Nomura International in Hong Kong, expected leaders to cut the amount of funds banks must keep in reserve in the second half of the year -- a step they have used in the past to boost liquidity. He also forecast fiscal policy to turn 'expansionary' in the second quarter to prevent gross domestic product growth from falling below 7.0 percent."

Markets. S&amp;P 500 futures are up, while U.S. treasury futures are lower. Markets in Asia ended the day green across the board. European markets were lower.
Chicago Fed. At 8:30 we get the Chicago Fed's index of national activity. Consensus is for a reading of 0.10 versus -0.39 prior.
 Flash PMI. At 10 a.m. we get the U.S. flash PMI report. Consensus is for a two tick gain from the prior survey showing 56.7.

" The Fed, in its official policy statement, said it planned to keep short-term rates below what it sees as appropriate for a normal economy even after the unemployment rate and inflation revert to typical levels... Put another way, the economy can't bear a level of interest rates that looked normal in the past because it has been so deeply scarred by the financial crisis."

Business Insider: Who should be most worried about the situation in Ukraine?
Judith Dwarkin: Obviously, there are many serious dimensions to the situation, including the potential for further military incursions by Russia into eastern and southern Ukraine, and battling factions within Ukraine itself contributing to ongoing internal instability. From the narrow perspective of the country's energy supplies, a top concern is that deliveries of Russian gas (and/or gas in transit through Ukraine to Europe) could be disrupted, either intentionally or because of sabotage. Given the current environment of open hostilities and that Ukraine owes Russia around $2 billion for previous gas purchases, there also is the question of how much Russia will charge Ukraine for gas as of April 1. Obtaining gas from eastern Europe to replace the Russian product would give Ukraine a bargaining chip, but arranging this would take some time. 
BI: What will be the fate of the Keystone Pipeline? 
JD: Putting "bullish" and "Keystone" in the same sentence is impossible, given the tortured history of this project. The latest wrinkle in the saga is the ruling by a Nebraska judge that the state's oil pipeline siting law is unconstitutional. Meanwhile, the 90-day "National Interest Determination/Final Decision" phase now underway notionally concludes early in 2Q14, after which a decision, in theory, can (finally) be rendered. While an objective reading of the State Department's findings and consideration of other aspects of the "national interest" associated with this project should favour a positive decision, who knows which way the political winds will be blowing at this time? 
BI:Are you bullish on the timeline for Mexican energy investment?
JD: "Bullish" relative to what? The pace at which development may or will proceed depends on many things, most notably the details on how reform is to be implemented, including local content rules and government take. These details have yet to be worked out. The country also must build new regulatory institutions able to supervise a sector that will be much more complex than previously. The first post-reform bid round reportedly isn't planned to take place until sometime in 2015.

We're At An All-Time High. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&amp;P 500 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/closing-bell-may-12-2014-2014-5">closed at record highs</a> on Monday. And U.S. futures are signaling more green with Dow futures up 26 points and S&amp;P 500 futures up 2.4 points. Markets in Asia closed higher led by a 1.9% jump in Japan's Nikkei. In Europe, Britain's FTSE, France CAC, and Germany's DAX are all higher.
Euro Tanks After Bundesbank Shocker. "Germany's central bank is willing to back an array of stimulus measures from the European Central Bank next month, including a negative rate on bank deposits and purchases of packaged bank loans if needed to keep inflation from staying too low, a person familiar with the matter said," reports the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303627504579559310643593806">Wall Street Journal's Brian Blackstone</a>. This would be a major reversal coming from an organization that is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/euro-tanks-on-news-bundesbank-more-support-more-easing-2014-5">notorious for being very tight</a> about monetary policy.
China's Slowing. China released three key economic stats overnight and all three missed expectations. Industrial production growth fell to 8.7% year-over-year in April from 8.8% in March; economists were looking for 8.9% growth. Retail sales growth fell to 11.9% from 12.2%; economists were forecasting a 12.2% print. Fixed asset investment growth year-to-date slowed to 17.3% in April from 17.6% in March; economists were looking for 17.7% growth. "By breakdown, we believe the anti-corruption campaign and property downturn are the two major factors behind the moderation in FAI growth," said Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Ting Lu. "On a positive note, the 8.7% yoy IP growth reading in April, if sustained in May and June, means GDP growth in 2Q14 could be similar to the 7.4% pace in 1Q14, suggesting a rebound in sequential growth from 1.4% in 1Q14. "
German Economic Confidence Crumbles. Germany's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zew-german-sentiment-2014-5">ZEW Economic Sentiment index</a> plunged to 33.1 in May from 43.2 in April. Economists were forecasting a 40 print. "Growth in Germany is currently strong, but we expect it will lose momentum in the second half of the year," said Pantheon Macroeconomics' Ian Shepherdson. "The ZEW sentiment survey generally gets a bad reputation for being too volatile, but we beg to differ. It is the earliest sentiment reading we get for the reference month, and if we look at the smoothed spread between analysts' views of the current situation and expectations we get a good forward looking indicator for growth. "
US Treasury Secretary In China. Secretary Jack Lew "called on Beijing to "renew" a pledge to overhaul its exchange rate policy, in his first visit to the Chinese capital since the renminbi began to reverse its climb against the dollar earlier this year," reported the <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/cc52a908-da5b-11e3-8273-00144feabdc0.html">Financial Times' Tom Mitchell</a>. "It is important that China demonstrate a renewed commitment to move to a more market-determined exchange rate which will help provide for more balanced domestic growth and global trade, while also moving to a more transparent exchange rate policy," said Lew.
$50 Billion Mega-Merger In The Works. "AT&amp;T Inc. is close to sealing a takeover of DirecTV that could put a value of nearly $50 billion on the satellite-television provider, people familiar with the matter said," reports the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303851804579558232282287084">Wall Street Journal's Dana Cimilluca, Shalini Ramachandran and Thomas Gryta</a>. "An agreement could be reached in two weeks if not soon, according to the people."
Pfizer Goes To Parliament. Pfizer CEO Ian Read is getting grilled <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-pfizer-says-keen-to-engage-with-astrazeneca-board-2014-13">by a British parliamentary committee </a>over the company's proposed takeover of UK drugmaker AstraZeneca. The big concern for lawmakers is the magnitude of job cuts and reduction in R&amp;D activity in the country. "We'll be efficient by some reduction in jobs. What I cannot tell you is how much or how many or where," said Read. "We'll look at this as our global combined footprint and then we'll make decisions."
Credit Suisse's Potential $2 Billion Settlement. "New York state's banking regulator is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars from Credit Suisse in its probe of potential tax evasion involving the Swiss bank, according to sources close to the matter, which could push an eventual settlement with U.S. authorities over $2 billion," reports <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-exclusive-credit-suisse-deal-with-us-authorities-could-top-2-billion---sources-2014-12">Reuters' Karen Freifeld and Aruna Viswanatha</a>.
Retail Sales Check. At 8:30 a.m. ET, we'll get the April retail sales report. Economists estimate retail sales climbed by 0.4% in April, 0.5% excluding autos and gas. "We expect decent retail sales but more moderate than March's sharp rebound from winter weakness," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/monday-scouting-report-may-12-2014-2014-5">said Credit Suisse economists</a>. "Unit vehicle sales fell slightly on the month. Last month's 1.9% spike in general merchandise sales looks ripe for a reversal. Income growth has been decent, however, so other components are expected to pick up the slack."
An Incomplete Fed. Federal Reserve governor Jeremy Stein has previously announced that he would be stepping down from he Fed on May 28. Stein is the chairman and sole member of the "the internal committee that monitors financial markets for signs of trouble and of the committee that watches the way banks treat their customers," notes the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/13/business/as-seats-go-unfilled-federal-reserve-board-could-drop-to-three-members.html?hpw&amp;rref=business&amp;_r=0">New York Times' Binyamin Appelbaum</a>. "The dwindling of its board is straining the Fed's ability to manage its complex responsibilities, which extend well beyond its enormous economic stimulus campaign and its lead role in the overhaul of financial regulation."
