<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"></div><p></p></div>In a sign of the continuing decline in relations between North Korea and China, Pyongyang moved a number of tanks and armored vehicles away from South Korea to the Chinese border, according to <a href="http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2014/08/19/2014081900919.html">The Chosun Ilbo</a>, citing an anonymous source. </p>
<p>North Korea has reportedly deployed 80 tanks to Ryanggang Province, directly across the border from China. The tanks were reinforced with armored infantry units, multiple rocket launchers, and a sharpshooter brigade. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to Chosun Ilbo, this is the first time that such military units had been deployed in Ryanggang Province. Ryanggang was the birthplace of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, and is subsequently </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><a href="http://www.matthewaid.com/post/95284336761/north-korea-reportedly-deploys-troops-and-tanks-from">revered</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> by the North Koreans. The province is also strategically located as it shields North Korea's eastern port cities. </span></p>
<p><span>The tanks are part of North Korea's 12th Corps. Established in 2010, the 12th Corps is one of the North's most modern units and, according to Chosun Ilbo's source, it has been "</span><span>turned into an attack force." </span></p>
<p><span>The shifting of some of North Korea's most high-tech military units away from the border with South Korea and towards China highlights the increasing distrust between China and Kim Jong-Un. </span></p>
<p>In May, North Korea reportedly <a href="http://www.nknews.org/2014/03/anti-china-sign-hung-at-n-korean-military-academy-chosun-ilbo/">hung signs</a> reading China is a "turncoat and our enemy" in one of the country's military education institutions. An internal North Korean memo in April <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-makes-break-with-china-in-memo-2014-6">derided</a> China as "being in the bed with the imperialists" for having criticized the North's nuclear ambitions. </p>
<p>In April, China is believed to have <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-22062589">conducted</a> military exercises along the North Korean border, although Chinese officials denied these claims. Still, in a sign of the rising tensions, Chinese President Xi Jinping said, likely alluding to North Korea, that no one state "should be allowed to throw a region and even the whole world into chaos for selfish gains."</p>
<p>Relations between China and North Korea have been <a href="http://thediplomat.com/2013/12/china-keeping-close-eye-on-north-korea/">strained</a> - even though China is the North's only official ally, ever since Kim Jong-Un had his uncle, Jang Song-Thaek - killed last year. Jang had led a number of diplomatic missions between the two countries. </p>
<p>North Korea is also a troublesome ally to have. The country has <a href="http://www.nti.org/country-profiles/north-korea/">tested nuclear weapons</a> on three occasions since 2006, and produces <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/china-north-korea-cooperation-crack-down-defectors-christian-missionaries-1661480">a stream of economic and political refugees</a> that cross into China. If the Chinese have decided that the alliance is more trouble than its worth, then North Korea has settled on an odd way to go about repairing the relationship.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Psychologists at the University of Oxford are highly sceptical of the media buzz around social media addiction.</strong></li><li><strong>Professor Andrew Przybylski of the Oxford Internet Institute believes that Silicon Valley engineers accept questionable psychological data as gospel when building their apps.</strong></li><li><strong> There is no reason to equate social media and hard drugs like cocaine according to researcher Amy Orben, although such comparisons are often made in media reports.</strong></li><li><strong>Both believe that getting caught up in the media hype around social media addiction acts as a dangerous distraction from more urgent problems in the tech industry, such as data privacy.</strong></li></ul><p>Social media addiction has become a familiar phrase. Silicon Valley insiders and psychologists have fuelled media reports saying that tech companies sprinkle <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-insiders-tell-bbc-how-tech-firms-turn-users-into-addicts-2018-7">"behavioural cocaine"</a> over their interfaces. They say platforms like Facebook use psychological tricks to get us hooked on our digital devices.</p><p>But scientists at the Oxford Internet Institute disagree.</p><p>Professor Andrew Przybylski is an experimental psychologist and Director of Research at the Oxford Internet Institute, and he thinks Silicon Valley "turncoats" don't understand the psychology they claim to manipulate.</p><h2>The inventor of infinite scrolling talks about the 'Soup Bowl problem' - but that research is problematic</h2><p>One such example comes from Aza Raskin, a Silicon Valley engineer who designed the infinite scroll function which allows you to keep scrolling endlessly down your feed, now used on sites like Facebook and Twitter.</p><p>Raskin <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0b9dzb6/panorama-smartphones-the-dark-side">told the BBC's Panorama programme</a> that he'd been inspired by the soup bowl experiment. This is a psychological experiment based on the thesis that if you give someone a bowl of soup that secretly replenishes itself, they will eat more soup than from a regular bowl.</p><p>"There's a famous experiment with soup bowls," Raskin told Panorama. "If a bowl, silently by itself just keeps refilling itself, where you don't see it. Do people eat more? It turns out yes people eat <em>a lot </em>more. Because you don't have the cue of 'I've finished.'"</p><p>He claimed that by mimicking the soup bowl experiment in his design, "it became so powerful that it just addicts people."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.shutterstock.com/g/Sergiy+Artsaba">Sergiy Artsaba/Shutterstock</a></span></p><p class="caption">The Soup Bowl experiment has been heavily criticised.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But according to Andrew Przybylski, this experiment has been <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2018/feb/16/mindless-eating-brian-wansink-is-there-something-rotten-behind-the-research">heavily criticised within the scientific community</a>. "We now know that that research has been very sloppily done. The researcher himself is under multiple investigations at the university of Cornell for self-plagiarism, for data manipulation, he doesn't keep very good records," he told Business Insider.</p><p>"If you actually knew anything about the research area, you certainly wouldn't tell BBC that you think that this research is the model that you use to create addictive technology."</p><h2><span style="color: #000000;">People talk about the dopamine high from Facebook likes but it's not really addictive</span></h2><p>Dopamine is a chemical released in the brain, often when we experience reward or pleasure. The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/12/12/former-facebook-vp-says-social-media-is-destroying-society-with-dopamine-driven-feedback-loops/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.cf2b205244bb">"dopamine feedback loop"</a> is sometimes held up as evidence that social media can affect our brains in the same way drugs do. The idea is that we become chemically dependent upon bursts of dopamine triggered by people 'liking' our posts on Facebook, or retweeting us on Twitter.</p><p>But while it's true that interacting with social media can give your brain a dopamine shot, that does not mean you're getting high. Your brain releases dopamine on an everyday basis.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock/vchal</span></p><p class="caption">While social media and cocaine both release dopamine, cocaine releases about 10 to 15 times more of the chemical.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Dopamine research itself shows that things like video games and technologies, they're in the same realm as food and sex and learning and all of these everyday behaviours. Whereas things like cocaine, really you're talking about 10, 15 times higher levels of free-flowing dopamine in the brain," said Przybylski.</p><p>Amy Orben, a psychological researcher at the University of Oxford,  is equally sceptical of the comparison between social media use and hard drugs. "Screens aren't a chemical that gets ingested and a certain dose causes X and another certain dose causes Y," she told Business Insider. "There's no real scientific reason to equate technologies and hard drugs."</p><p>Recently addiction expert and Clinical Director at Charter Harley Street Mandy Saligari told <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0b9dzb6/panorama-smartphones-the-dark-side">the same BBC Panorama documentary</a> that giving a child a smartphone is "tantamount to giving them a gram of cocaine." </p><p>While Orben thinks that it's difficult to know how much technology parents should allow their children, the cocaine analogy exasperates her.</p><p>"If we have people who are seen as experts telling parents that giving their child a smartphone, which is a daily object of use, is like giving them a gram of cocaine it's causing unnecessary concern in people who are already concerned," she said.</p><h2>The new tech antipathy might just be another type of marketing</h2><p>To Andrew Przybylski's mind, the hype surrounding social media addiction is the flipside of the methods tech companies employ to sell their products.</p><p>"It doesn't mean that [tech companies] haven't been successful making money or convincing people that what they do has science behind it. But when they talk about colour [choices], or when they talk about soup bowl research, or they start talking about dopamine, you know they don't know what they're talking about," said Przybylski.</p><p>He believes this marketing of bad science is what turns Silicon Valley insiders into self-styled whistleblowers. "The same hype that hopefully sells stock in Facebook or whatever, that shows 'we can change people's minds' and 'we can change their opinions and purchasing decisions' or whatever, that same hype happens on the other side when people try to be scaremongers."</p><p>"It doesn't have any more or less science in it, it's just that the message has flipped. But the evidence hasn't," he said.</p><p>Amy Orben also believes that the media has played a role in whipping up a fear of addictive technology by using comparisons to drugs. "I think in that way they have become very useful metaphors in a kind of attention-led economy."</p><h2>Social media might indeed be bad for people - but there isn't enough research yet</h2><p>Professor Przybylski views the language of social media addiction as a new kind of moral panic. "It'll be like the other moral panics we've had. We used to be panicked about Dungeons and Dragons, and rap music, and violent video games. And now this is the thing we're panicking over."</p><p>He believes that getting swept up in panic and bad science could give big tech companies leeway to get away with serious ethical shortfalls. "Taking this hype for granted distracts us from very serious questions about who owns our data, very serious questions about privacy, and user consent. And it distracts us from doing good research," he said.</p><p>"If we're so busy being the boy who cried wolf, we're not actually going to get any better [at] detecting wolves."</p><p>Neither Professor Przybylski nor Amy Orben rule out the possibility that social media can negatively affect human behaviour, but both emphasise the need for further research.</p><p>"The main takeaway here is that we don't actually know these things," said Przybylski. "It is important for these large companies to share their data with researchers, and share their data with the public. This research needs to be done transparently, it can't just be a bunch of Cambridge Analyticas and one-on-one relationships between social media companies and researchers. There's zero compelling evidence showing tech is as addictive as cocaine, according to scientists

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Public Domain</span></p><p class="caption">MiG-25</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>42 years ago today, Soviet Flight Lieutenant Viktor Ivanovich Belenko defected with the most secret operational combat aircraft of the era.</strong></li><li><strong>He landed the secretive Mig-25P at Hokodate Airport in Japan, almost collding with a 727 airliner in the process.</strong></li><li><strong>Granted asylum by the US, Belenko continues to live in the United States according to most sources. </strong></li><li><strong>He was photographed in a bar in 2000 where he was recognized, photographed and spoke openly to people about his experience defecting from the former Soviet Union. </strong></li></ul><p>1430 Hrs. Local, September 6, 1976. Sea of Japan near Hakodate Airport, Hokkaido Prefecture.</p><p>Jet fuel burned faster than he calculated as he pressed lower under the overcast, down to the gray black waves only 150-feet above the Sea of Japan. He hauled the heavy control stick left, then corrected back right in a skidding bank around a fishing vessel that came out of the misty nowhere in the low afternoon cloud cover. White vapor spiraled long "S"s from his angular wingtips in the violent turn nearly touching the wave tops.</p><p>That was the second fishing boat he had to bank hard to miss at nearly wave-top level. Rain squalls started. The huge Tumansky R-15 jet engines gulped more gas by the minute. This plane was not made to fly low and subsonic. It was built to fly supersonic in the high altitude hunt for the now-extinct American B-70 Mach 3 super-bomber that was never put into service.</p><p>He had to find the Japanese Self-Defense Force F-4 Phantoms that were no doubt in the air to intercept him. If they didn't shoot him down first, they would lead him to Chitose Air Base where he may be able to land safely. If his fuel held out. But the Japanese Phantoms were nowhere to be found.</p><p>So, he hauled the stick back into his lap and the big, boxy Foxbat clawed through the clouds in its last, angry climb before succumbing to a fuel-starved death.</p><p>Eventually, he found an airport. Hokodate Airport. A 6,000 foot runway. Not long enough for his MiG-25 though. He'd make it work. On final approach to Hokodate he nearly collided head-on with a 727 airliner. It was better than ditching where he'd lose his biggest bargaining chip. His top secret airplane. He managed a rough landing, running off the end of the runway, climbing out of jet, and firing his pistol in the air when curious Japanese began snapping photos of the incident from a roadway.</p><p>It was, as I recall, the biggest thing that had ever happened in my life. I was 15 years old then.</p><p>We raced to the hobby shop on our bicycles to consult with the older men who owned the store. What would this mean? Was it real? Would there be a model of the MiG-25 released soon? We poured over the grainy newspaper photos, the best we had ever seen, again and again. We could not believe it, but it was real. The most exotic, highest flying, fastest, most secretive fighter plane on earth had just fallen into American hands. We got our first look at the mysterious MiG-25 Foxbat.</p><p>Flight Lieutenant<span> </span><a href="https://theaviationist.com/2016/09/06/the-story-of-the-soviet-pilot-who-defected-to-japan-with-a-secretive-mig-25-foxbat-40-years-ago-today/">Viktor Ivanovich Belenko</a>, an elite MiG-25P pilot of the Soviet Air <keyword id="6354810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defense">Defense</keyword> Forces, had defected with the most secret operational combat aircraft of the era.</p><p>What happened in the aftermath of his defection 42 years ago influenced aircraft design, dispelled myths about the Soviet Union, angered one nation and offered relief to another while leaving a third in an awkward diplomatic bind. It was one more minor tear in the tapestry of the Iron Curtain as it slowly unraveled around the edges, like a loose thread that continues to pull out longer and longer.</p><p>"What did they think and [what do we] think now? Traitor! Military pilots consider it a huge disgrace for the Air Force of the USSR and Russia." That is what the administrator of the most active social media fan page for the Russian Aerospace Forces told TheAviationist.com when we asked them what Russians think of Viktor Belenko today. While the Iron Curtain has come down, the hardened attitudes about Belenko betraying the state remain. The Russians still hate Viktor Belenko for stealing their most prized combat aircraft at the time.</p><p>In the U.S., "secret" units have been operating Russian MiGs and Sukhois quietly over the American west for years. But Belenko's defection in 1976 with a Foxbat, the NATO codename for the MiG-25 (the Russians don't call it that), was an intelligence coup that not only provided technical data and benchmark insights for decades to come, it also provided a core-sample of Communist life in the Soviet Union.</p><p>According to Belenko, things were bad in the Soviet Union. In the 1980 chronicle of Belenko's defection, "MiG Pilot: The Final Escape of Lieutenant Belenko", author John Baron wrote of rampant alcoholism within the ranks of the Soviet air force. Living facilities at bases in the eastern Soviet Union were poor since some of the bases the MiG-25 operated from had not yet been upgraded to accommodate the larger ground crews needed to maintain the aircraft. Food quality for enlisted maintenance crews was so bad the men refused to eat. While food for officer/pilots like Belenko was much better, when Belenko reached the United States after his defection he mistakenly ate a can of cat food and later remarked that, "It was delicious. Better than canned food in the Soviet Union today!"</p><p>But Belenko entered a netherworld when he defected from Russia. While U.S. President Gerald Ford granted Belenko asylum in the U.S. and the Central Intelligence Agency gave him a stipend and built a life for him as a pilot and consultant in the U.S., neither side could fully trust the turncoat. When Belenko arrived in Japan he was given the book by Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch". Despite his oath of military service to the Soviet Union, Belenko feared and was repulsed by the deep social injustice of Communist Soviet Russia. He had seen people inside the Soviet Union suffering like Denisovitch from poverty, hunger and oppression. Belenko wanted out. And so, he stole his Foxbat, flew it to Japan and never looked back.</p><p>In a footnote to Belenko's defection with the MiG-25P Foxbat, I did get my scale model airplane kit shortly thereafter. The Japanese hobby brand Hasegawa had sent photographers to Hokodate Airport to photograph the MiG-25 before it was concealed, examined by the U.S. and Japan, and shipped back to the Soviet Union in pieces. Within months of the MiG-25 landing in Japan, Hasegawa released a 1/72nd scale plastic model kit of the MiG-25 complete with decals for Viktor Belenko's aircraft. It sold for $10 U.S.</p><p><span>Viktor Belenko continues to live in the United States according to most sources. He was photographed in a bar in 2000 where he was recognized, photographed and spoke openly to people about his experience defecting from the former Soviet Union. In 1995, he had returned to Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union and safely returned to the U.S. afterward. Belenko told an interviewer he had enjoyed going on fishing trips in the U.S. with test pilot and fighter ace General Chuck Yeager.</span></p><p><span>There have been other famous defections by military pilots, including a shadowy attempted but apparently failed defection with a Soviet Tu-95 "Bear" heavy bomber. Author Tom Clancy rose to prominence on his breakout fictional novel "The Hunt for Red October" about a Russian captain defecting with a Soviet nuclear powered missile submarine. One of his fictional characters in the book even refers to the Belenko defection saying, "This isn't some pilot defecting with a MiG!". How a Soviet pilot defected to the West with the most secretive combat aircraft of the era

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) <a href="http://nypost.com/2015/06/02/ny-democrats-push-bloomberg-to-run-for-president/">has some interesting theories</a> about his successor potentially launching a 2016 Democratic presidential campaign.<p>In a Fox Business interview on Wednesday, Giuliani said "there's room" for former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) to make it into the race as a Democrat.</p><p>However, Giuliani also noted the billionaire media mogul would have to battle against a fellow "centrist" Democrat: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.</p><p>"It makes a lot of sense. I mean, there are two wings in the Democratic Party, like there are various wings in the Republican Party. Let's call it the 'progressive' and the 'more centrist' wing. Hillary, for better or for worse, right now represents the 'centrist' wing," Giuliani said.</p><p>Giuliani was responding to a question about <a href="http://nypost.com/2015/06/02/ny-democrats-push-bloomberg-to-run-for-president/">a Wednesday report</a> by New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin. In the column, Goodwin claimed some New York Democrats are urging Bloomberg to switch his political party from independent to Democratic and challenge Clinton for the nomination. Bloomberg reportedly expressed interest in the idea.</p><p>Giuliani suggested a Bloomberg 2016 campaign could embolden other Clinton foes in the Democratic Party as well.&#xa0;He cited Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) as potential "progressive wing" contenders. Warren has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elizabeth-warren-supporters-finally-give-up-on-2016-2015-6">repeatedly insisted</a> she has no interest in the race. De Blasio recently tried to make <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-does-bill-de-blasio-want-in-2016-2015-4">national waves as a progressive leader</a> but has also said he's not running.&#xa0;</p><p>"Elizabeth Warren is the big representative of the 'progressive' wing; de &#xa0;Blasio, I think, wants to be. There's room for Michael Bloomberg," Giuliani said. "Plus, here's the interesting thing. If he entered the race against Hillary, … that would divide up the centrist vote and I think that might change up Elizabeth Warren's mind. ... Hillary and Mike would kind of divide the same Democratic vote. And the progressives would be sitting on the outside, and Elizabeth Warren or de Blasio or somebody like that could have a chance." (Giuliani offered a skeptical laugh when he said de Blasio's name.)&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Giuliani also noted Bloomberg would face some difficulties in the Democratic primary. Notably, he said, Bloomberg held office as both a Republican and as an independent, which would result in his being labeled a turncoat if he ran.</p><p>"He's got issues - nothing to do with the way he governed; I thought he was a terrific mayor.&#xa0;He has issues about changing parties: He was a Democrat, became a Republican, became an independent, and still is not a Democrat as far as I know. So that always hurts you," Giuliani said.&#xa0;</p><p>Of course, there's nothing new about the&#xa0;quadrennial rumors that Bloomberg will launch a campaign for the White House. Other <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/08/opinion/michael-bloomberg-mayor-of-london.html">recent speculation</a> has included a potential mayoral campaign in London. Many veteran observers have <a href="http://tktk.gawker.com/dear-michael-wolff-no-1706998252">rolled their eyes</a> at the various rumors, however.</p><p>Additionally, sources at his eponymous&#xa0;company confirm that, since leaving City Hall, Bloomberg has been very involved in the day-to-day operations of his business. Rudy Giuliani thinks it 'makes a lot of sense' for Michael Bloomberg to challenge Hillary Clinton

<p><span>"Look at the stage at CPAC just a couple days ago. Who are the rock stars of the GOP?" Matt Kibbe, executive director of <keyword id="1135975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="FreedomWorks">FreedomWorks</keyword>, asked an audience of influential conservatives at the monthly New York Meeting confab. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"They're exactly the candidates that the Republican consultants said could not possibly win. <p><span>"I remember when Karl Rove was still in the White House and he said that Arlen Specter is the best we can do in Pennsylvania," Kibbe said. "Fast-forward to Obamacare — who was the 60th vote?"</span></p>
<p><span>"Spector the Defector!" someone in the audience whispered.</span></p>
<p><span>Kibbe chided Rove for trying to wipe out members of the party with whom he did not see eye to eye.</span></p>
<p><span>"Isn't that what we believe in? Don't we believe in competition — in the democratization of <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> in allowing for competitive primaries? Do we really want Karl Rove to decide that?" Kibbe said, to applause.</span></p>
<p><span>"No!" the audience shouted back.</span></p>
<p><span>Later in the meeting, pollster Pat Caddell loudly blasting the Republican Party for allowing consultants to run their campaigns. He painted the 2012 election — which saw several Republicans forfeit once winnable Senate races — as a disaster.</span></p>
<p><span>"Until you have outside experts who are not pledged to protect that consultant lobby establishment, then all of this is crap," Caddell said. "My argument with Republicans — you want to solve your problem? You need to first start with the truth."</span></p>
<p><span>Caddell added: <strong>"It's like Pearl Harbor. Election Day was like Pearl Harbor, and you people are still pretending it didn't happen."</strong></span></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The Islamic State rules over the areas it controls using fear tactics to terrify its populace into submission, and its leaders are proving themselves to be quite paranoid as the militant group loses some ground.</p><p>"The Islamic State has turned cartoonish violence into real-life tragedy as a means of control," strategic security firm The Soufan Group <a href="http://soufangroup.com/tsg-intelbrief-the-islamic-state-of-fear/">reports</a>.</p><p>"Yet the state of fear cuts both ways, and the Islamic State is increasingly terrified of the people it claims to protect and rule."</p><p>Unlike other terror groups, the Islamic State (also known as ISIS, ISIL, and Daesh) sees seizing and controlling territory as essential to its mission and purpose.</p><p>The terror army has declared a "caliphate," an 7th century-style Islamic empire that aims to unite the world's Sunni Muslims under a single religious and political entity in parts of Iraq, Syria, and beyond.</p><p>ISIS militants enforce a strict interpretation of Sharia law, punishing crimes with physical abuse and banning music and cigarettes.</p><p>ISIS also leaves bodies in the street of its de facto capital of Raqqa in Syria and releases propaganda videos showing brutal executions as part of its scare tactics to keep people in line.</p><p>"Sunnis are indeed being given a stark choice: Either you accept the caliphate, renounce the international [US-led] coalition and its proxies, or you will meet with ignoble death, of which even your own families won't want to speak," ISIS experts Michael Weiss and Hassan Hassan <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/06/23/isis-is-begging-for-your-attention-by-killing-people-with-rocket-launchers.html">wrote in The Daily Beast this week</a>.</p><p>"You will not be martyred; you will be tried and found guilty, branded a turncoat to your faith, abominated as a murderer of your fellow Sunnis, and destroyed as something less than a human being."</p><p>In addition to using these fear tactics to ward off an uprising, ISIS goes to great lengths to protect its positions and weed out possible spies within its ranks.</p><p>Soufan notes that "the recent videotaped execution of 15 alleged spies demonstrates just how afraid the group is of internal revolt through informants and potential Sunni tribal opposition."</p><p>The paranoia makes sense, considering that many top ISIS leaders are former Iraqi intelligence officers from ousted dictator Saddam Hussein's regime, as <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/islamic-state-files-show-structure-of-islamist-terror-group-a-1029274.html"><span>Christoph Reuter of Der</span> Spiegel reported</a>.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-a-former-physics-teacher-is-now-leading-isis-2015-4#ixzz3e5Nt7iSu"></a></p><p><span>Haji Bakr, the former Iraqi colonel </span>credited with creating the blueprint for ISIS, had modified "<span>Saddam Hussein's omnipresent security apparatus, in which no one, not even generals in the intelligence service, could be certain they weren't being spied on," Der Spiegel reported.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="The Institute for the Study of War" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55870c9c6bb3f7c15db73202-960/screenshot 2015-06-21 15.11.44.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></div><p></p></div></div>Weiss and Hassan point out that Sunnis in Syria and Iraq are crucial to the survival of ISIS, noting that <span style="font-size: 15px; ISIS is getting paranoid

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">State Senate candidate Jessica Ramos in Corona, Queens.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>In New York State, progressive insurgents are challenging eight Democratic state senators who spent years voting with Republicans. </strong></li><li><strong>Five of these challengers are women - and if their grassroots campaigns and left-wing policy platforms succeed in primaries next month, they could remake <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword> in New York. </strong></li><li><strong>The movement to expel establishment Democrats isn't new, but it seems to be finding stronger footing than ever before.</strong></li></ul><p>Priya Varanasi met New York state Senate candidate Alessandra Biaggi when the 32-year-old, first-time candidate came to speak to Varanasi's high school women's empowerment club in late May. </p><p>Varanasi, a college-bound 18-year-old, and a group of her friends are now leading Biaggi's effort to register Bronx and Westchester County youth to vote. The job involves explaining why a former Hillary Clinton campaign aide is challenging a fellow Democrat, 14-year incumbent Sen. Jeff Klein, in the September primary. </p><p>But for them, Klein's record in Albany, where he led a group of renegade Democrats who voted with Senate Republicans for seven years, largely speaks for itself.</p><p>Varanasi says that after describing how Klein's Independent Democratic Caucus stymied progressive legislative efforts in the deep-blue state, she has little trouble convincing young people to support his insurgent challenger. </p><p>"Oftentimes these conversations happen over text," said Varanasi, who has yet to cast her first ballot. "If they don't yet know about the IDC, I tell them about it and they're pretty quickly receptive and ready to register." </p><p>Biaggi is one of a diverse slate of eight progressive challengers - five of them women - who are running against the former IDC members in the state Senate. Their grassroots campaigns are reflective of a growing movement challenging centrism and party leadership, galvanized both by a backlash to President Donald Trump and the success of rising stars <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-about-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-who-beat-crowley-in-ny-dem-primary-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">like Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez</a>.</p><h2>Outrage builds over turncoat Democrats </h2><p>Following Trump's 2016 victory, many New Yorkers were made newly aware of a surprisingly bleak political reality in their own backyard. </p><p>In a state celebrated as a powerful liberal bulwark against the new administration, Republicans have maintained control of half of the state legislature. For the last seven years, the IDC, which gained three members in late 2016 and early 2017, was key to the GOP's power.</p><p>And even after the April dissolution of the group, Republicans maintain control over a majority -  32 votes to the Democrats' 31 - because of one Brooklyn Democrat, Simcha Felder, who joined Republicans shortly after being elected.</p><p>The IDC was created in 2011 after Republicans won a majority in the state Senate and a handful of Democrats figured they could boost their power in the chamber by aligning with them. Since then, the caucus has attracted new members with promises of bigger budgets, powerful committee chairmanships, and special interest donations. <strong> </strong></p><p>Much evidence points to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's key role in creating and protecting the swing group, which has boosted his bipartisan credentials, and, critics say, helped him cultivate lucrative relationships with Wall Street and real estate donors. Cuomo's primary challenger, activist and former actress Cynthia Nixon, has <a href="https://twitter.com/CynthiaNixon/status/979406230824411136">hammered him on the issue</a>. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Supporters of state Senate candidate Alessandra Biaggi at a campaign event in Mt. Vernon, NY in July.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Progressive activists say Democratic defections have prevented more than two-dozen pieces of progressive legislation - on key priorities including voting rights and abortion access - from becoming law.</p><p>"We are at the crux of nearly every single crisis this country is living with - the immigration crisis, the housing crisis, the public transportation crisis, the environmental crisis," said Jessica Ramos, a former City Hall staffer who's challenging former IDC Sen. Jose Peralta in his Queens primary. "And we have a state senator and a governor that don't seem to understand that." </p><p>Nationwide, Republicans control the governorships and both chambers of the legislature in <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/article/whats-at-play-in-the-2018-state-legislature-races.html">26 states.</a> Democrats can say the same about just eight states.</p><p>During President Barack Obama's administration, Democrats lost about 1,000 seats in Congress and state legislatures. Ocasio-Cortez recently blamed Democratic leadership for failing to invest in younger and first-time candidates. </p><p>"State parties aren't working on aggressively investing in young people running in state assembly seats, statehouse seats, so they can later go on to Congress," <a href="https://twitter.com/PodSaveAmerica/status/1026865296651386880">she told</a> the progressive political podcast Pod Save America.</p><p>Democratic activists and party leaders now want to take a page out of the GOP playbook to begin building the party's long-term power.</p><p>"If we don't win back state legislatures in 2018 and in 2020, then winning the House is a temporary fix to what will become another permanent structural problem," said Amanda Litman, the cofounder of Run For Something, a group working to elect young Democrats to state and local office. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">State Senate candidate Alessandra Biaggi talks with supporters at a campaign event in Mt. Vernon, NY in July.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>'Nothing to lose - all to gain'  </h2><p>All five women running to defeat the former IDC members are political novices.</p><p>Rachel May, a Syracuse University administrator running in an upstate district, learned about the New York Health Act - the single-payer bill senate Republicans have repeatedly rejected - at a rally last year.  </p><p>She launched her candidacy a few months later with a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf2f7smluzY">campaign ad</a> describing how her late husband was diagnosed with brain cancer in his early 30s and spent his last days worrying that the cost of his care would bankrupt his family. </p><p>"When Republicans started talking about bringing back lifetime caps on health insurance, that was like a knife in my gut," May says in the ad of the GOP's Obamacare repeal effort. </p><p>Ramos, then Mayor Bill de Blasio's director of Latino media, was commuting to work on a Wednesday in July 2017 - stalled underground during a particularly miserable day on the New York City subway - when she decided she needed to take matters into her own hands. </p><p>"Summer of hell for outer boros!" she tweeted from the 7 train in Queens. "There are people sobbing because they think they are going to lose their job."</p><p>Ramos' complaint made it into <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/07/24/public-transits-summer-of-hell">a New Yorker story</a> - "Public Transit's Summer of Hell." Six months later, she rolled out her campaign against Sen. Jose Peralta with the slogan: "Mom. Renter. Straphanger."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">State Senate candidate Jessica Ramos talks with residents in Corona, Queens during an evening of door-knocking in July.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Jasmine Robinson, a 38-year-old legal secretary from Staten Island, was at a vigil last December for Erica Garner, the late daughter of Eric Garner, who became a national symbol of police misconduct when he was killed by an NYPD officer's chokehold in July 2014, when she decided her district needed better representation.</p><p>Robinson is running a scrappy, long-shot campaign against former IDC member Sen. Diane Savino.</p><p>"We have nothing to lose, but all to gain," Robinson said. </p><p>Some of the former IDC members have attempted to paint their challengers as spoilers.</p><p>Klein's spokesperson accused the IDC challengers of "aiding and abetting the Republicans in New York State."</p><p>"These challengers, instead of working for a united Democratic Senate, are having a public identity crisis and will only have themselves to blame in November when they still don't have votes in the Senate to pass the progressive legislation they claim to care about," the spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider. </p><p>Peralta insisted that Ramos "was nowhere to be found" when he was busy scoring legislative victories, like paid family leave, funding for immigrant legal defense, and a $15 minimum wage.</p><p>Julie Goldberg, a school librarian challenging former IDC member Sen. Jose Peralta's district.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>It's 'a very different electorate'</h2><p>Perhaps no one has made a bigger splash in Democratic politics recently than Ocasio-Cortez, who stunned Washington when she beat the powerful incumbent New York Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary in June. </p><p>Her energy, which she's spread around the country campaigning with progressive insurgents, is particularly present in her home state. The day after Ocasio-Cortez's June 26 win, the IDC challengers raised a combined $17,000, <a href="https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/albany/story/2018/07/24/other-insurgents-may-benefit-from-fundraising-boom-for-ocasio-cortez-528032">Politico reported</a>. And the candidates beat that record every day for the remaining 15 days in that filing period. </p><p>Shortly after Crowley's defeat, John Liu, the city's former comptroller, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/13/nyregion/john-liu-senate-avella-idc-comeback.html">announced</a> his campaign against the last remaining former IDC member without a challenger, Sen. Tony Avella of Queens. Zellnor Myrie, a 31-year-old lawyer, and former city councilman Robert Jackson are challenging the other two former IDC members. </p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bill Lipton, political director of the Working Families Party, said Ocasio-Cortez's win "revealed that there's a very different electorate than there was four years ago - there's a whole set of new prime Democrats that have been activated, first by Bernie Sanders, and then by Trump's win."</span></p><p>Ramos, Biaggi, and Liu are courting the same voters Ocasio-Cortez did - Ramos's district sits entirely within Crowley's congressional district.</p><p>Biaggi, <span style="font-weight: 400;">who recently hired two of Ocasio-Cortez's organizers,</span> said some of the voters she's talked to have even mistaken her for Ocasio-Cortez and insisted they've already voted for her.</p><p>Another young Latina Democratic socialist, 27-year-old community organizer <a href="https://www.villagevoice.com/2018/08/01/how-julia-salazar-is-trying-to-become-the-next-alexandria-ocasio-cortez/">Julia Salazar</a>, is benefiting from a boost from Ocasio-Cortez in her race against another state Senate Democrat, who was never associated with the IDC. Salazar is running as a younger, more progressive alternative in her Brooklyn district and has seen a dramatic spike in donations and volunteers since late June.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">State Senate candidate Alessandra Biaggi at a campaign event in July.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>A 'gender bonus'? </h2><p>Some pollsters say there's evidence female candidates in Democratic primaries are benefiting from an intense desire among Democratic voters to elect women. In May, Dave Wasserman of the non-partisan Cook Political report <a href="https://www.cookpolitical.com/analysis/house/house-overview/drive-elect-women-defining-2018s-democratic-primaries">looked at</a> the 65 House Democratic primaries (without incumbents) that featured at least one man and one woman. The female candidates defeated their male opponents in 45 of those races - and Wasserman found that women benefited from a 15% "gender bonus." </p><p>"2018 might be remembered as the 'Year of the Angry College-Educated Female,'" he wrote. </p><p>But there are myriad factors that influence why a female candidate might be more attractive to voters than her male opponent. Kelly Dittmar, a scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, says the "gender bonus" stats drive her "a little crazy," but she agrees that women likely have an advantage in Democratic primaries in the most progressive parts of the country. </p><p>"I think we're getting closer to a time when we can talk about gender and particularly the gender experience you have as a credential for office and not as a hurdle that you have to overcome or avoid," she said. </p><p>Some of the women running in New York say they've gotten a boost from supporters fed up with the vast underrepresentation of women in politics. Women make up just <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/06/30/us/politics/women-state-legislators.html">28% of lawmakers</a> in New York's state legislature and 22% in the Senate. </p><p>"I would go door to door and people would say, 'Who are you running against?' and I would say Dave, and they would say, 'Oh say no more, we need more women,'" May said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">State Senate candidate Jessica Ramos knocks on doors in Corona, Queens in July.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Biaggi's race is particularly charged by gender issues, given that her opponent, the former IDC leader Klein, was accused of <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/jeff-klein-accused-of-sexual-misconduct_us_5a5531cbe4b03417e872f80e">forcibly kissing a young female aide</a> in 2015. (Klein has denied the allegations.)  </p><p>But all the candidates have faced strong headwinds. </p><p>"They have been told over and over again, 'Don't run, what are you doing? You can't take on the incumbent, it's not your turn, you can't win so why even try.' How Trump and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez energized a group of women looking to reshape New York politics

And when you do, it's imperative that you choose your words wisely.</span></p>
<p>"Whether you are quitting on good terms or bad terms, you don't want to burn bridges," says Dana Manciagli, a career expert and author of "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CAX5GR2" target="_blank">Cut the Crap, Get a Job!</a>" "The words you use when you inform your boss of your decision to leave can determine whether they'll support you going forward. And you definitely want their support."</p>
<p>She says people commonly regret what they say during their resignation because they are angry, nervous, or unaware of the consequences.</p>
<p>"There are two different scenarios that trigger a poor selection of words. One, the employee is quitting because they found another job," Manciagli explains. "Many say disparaging things because they are going to 'teach their prior company a lesson.' Their ego is inflated and they are going to crap all over the company on their way out." And two, the employee is quitting because their situation is bad, but they have no other job waiting. "These employees feel like the victim and are going to blame others, including their boss," she says.</p>
<p>But the best "quitters" go out saying positive words, as painful as it may be, and talk about what they learned and what they will carry forward in their career. "And they use words that will get them hired back by the same boss at a later point in time, if needed," she says.<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>To avoid burning bridges, Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tame-Your-Terrible-Office-Tyrant/dp/0470457643/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1248186483&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank">Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job</a>," suggests you take the time to write out your thoughts beforehand, "as your words will be remembered." Highlight the positive aspects of working for your boss and the company, and why your move has to do with your career aspirations. "Pointing fingers or being negative about the reasons you're leaving have no redeeming value."</p>
<p>She says the moment you announce your resignation, your manager may feel a sense of shock or denial. "But that quickly turns into defensiveness and the onus is on you to counter that with the utmost diplomacy," Taylor explains. "You can only benefit by keeping emotion out of the process, as no one has ever benefitted by burning bridges - or being anything less than humble when calling it quits." </p>
<p>Here are 19 things you should never say when you're resigning from a job:</p>
<p><strong>"I'm leaving…today."</strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>Never quit without offering ample time for the company to complete the transition. "If you can offer <em>more</em> than two weeks, that reflects well on you, even though your company many not need it," Taylor says. "Also find out during your conversation how and when your boss wants you to communicate your departure with fellow employees."</p>
<p><strong>"This is the worst company I have ever worked for."</strong></p>
<p>"You're basically nailing the coffin shut on any opportunity to return to that company, or have the company be a positive reference," Manciagli says. "There is no upside to bashing the company you are exiting. None."</p>
<p>Instead you could say, "I believe I will be a better fit at another company."</p>
<p><strong>"You don't know how to manage people."</strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>First, insults will get you nowhere. Second, it takes two people to be a great manager-employee team, Manciagli says.</p>
<p>You could say, "Although we both tried, our manager-subordinate relationship wasn't where it could have been." But best is to leave this out of the dialogue completely, she says.</p>
<p><strong>"No one is happy here."</strong><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </strong></p>
<p>Don't try to suggest the ship is going down with you. "Even if it's true, your coworkers won't appreciate it, and you're not their spokesperson," Taylor says. "If they're about to jump ship, that will be their task."</p>
<p><strong>"Other people are getting promoted, and I'm going nowhere, so I'm leaving."</strong></p>
<p>"It's sad that the person who says this has not yet learned that their progress through the corporate ladder has virtually nothing to do with peers," Manciagli says. "This is a person clearly <em>not</em> self-aware. They are taking no responsibility for their areas for improvement."</p>
<p><strong>"The product is not up to par."</strong></p>
<p>That won't win you any points, even if you feel you are being constructive. "Once you're parting ways, you're already perceived as a turncoat, so you don't want to suggest that you'll be badmouthing their product or service in the marketplace," says Taylor.</p>
<p><strong>"I wasn't compensated fairly." / "This company's pay is not market-competitive."</strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>Don't make it about money. "A statement about your compensation, even though it may be true, will be perceived as a negative slam against the company in your future career endeavors," Taylor explains. "This is a situation where you have to look at what you have to gain or, more specifically, lose by openly disparaging the employer's choices, even if they led to your dissatisfaction."</p>
<p>Manciagli agrees. "Unless you have done a statistically-sound market study, then you do not know if your pay was market-competitive."<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>If you feel strongly about mentioning your salary, you could try: "I was fortunate enough to find a position that gives my family and I some more breathing room, financially."</p>
<p><strong>"I'm concerned about the company's future."</strong></p>
<p>"Your vote of no confidence before you leave is like a block to the head before you smile and walk out," says Taylor. You're better off not sharing your misgivings and instead talking about the fact that you were seeking a different opportunity.</p>
<p><strong>"He always blocked my progress on projects, and she was always rude and kept me out of the loop."</strong><strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </strong></p>
<p>Now is not the time to reveal issues you had with your coworkers, Manciagli says. "It's too late. You are resigning." This approach makes you look weak and blameful. "Just don't do it. Talk about yourself only," she suggests.</p>
<p><strong>"I didn't have enough to do." / "I was always so bored."</strong></p>
<p>This statement shows a lack of initiative, and you'll just be labeling yourself in their eyes as unmotivated. "Any blame placed on coworkers or your boss at this stage of the game is water under the bridge," Taylor says. "Your best strategy is to be concise, professional, and show gratitude for the opportunity."</p>
<p><strong>"I kept my head down, did my job, and wasn't rewarded in any way."</strong></p>
<p>News flash: Your paycheck and employment is your reward.</p>
<p>Manciagli says if you want more attention from your boss, such as thank-you emails or pats on the back, you should have communicated that. "Plus, excellence in our jobs is more than keeping our heads down. As a matter of fact, that strategy can backfire."</p>
<p><strong>"I already told my cube mates, so now I'm ready to tell you…"</strong></p>
<p>No matter how bad your relationship is with your boss, you need to respect their position and tell them about your plan to leave the company before you share that information with anyone else in the office. "And you need them to support you at some level," Manciagli explains. "There is never a good outcome from telling others before the boss. There is no such thing as a secret!"</p>
<p>Make your decision in private, with your family and non-work friends in confidence. Then, make an appointment directly with your boss, she says.</p>
<p><strong>"I have a much better offer from a way cooler company."</strong></p>
<p>The last thing your soon to be ex-employer wants to hear now is how great your new employer will be. "Your best option is not to mention the company by name or discuss very much about them, other than the fact that they're a better fit for xyz reason," Taylor says.<strong style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </strong></p>
<p><strong>"I couldn't find you, so I'm leaving you a voice mail/email to let you know…"</strong></p>
<p>Make every effort to meet in person when resigning. Something this important should not be left to an impersonal form of communication unless there's no other option. After you've met in person, Taylor recommends sending your boss a polite and positive formal letter of resignation. </p>
<p><strong>"Here's what's wrong with this job."</strong></p>
<p>Don't offer unsolicited advice; it will appear haughty. "This is your opportunity to thank your employer for the training and opportunity," Taylor says.</p>
<p><strong>"I am definitely/definitely not open to hearing your counteroffer."</strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>First of all, don't assume your employer will counter. And second, don't announce your decision about whether you're interested in hearing and considering it before they even initiate that conversation.</p>
<p>While experts tend to advise against accepting a counteroffer, it's usually worth at least some consideration.</p>
<p><strong>"Good luck. This is a sinking ship."</strong></p>
<p>This is a terrible thing to say. Manciagli says you should take the opposite approach, and leave off with something like, "I wish you and the company all the success going forward."</p>
<p>Taylor says it can be challenging to refrain from saying these things and to stick to a script when parting ways with a boss. "Resignation is often the culmination of weeks, months, or years of pent-up frustration, and so it's only natural that something will slip out that isn't politically correct." But if you remember to plan ahead, stay calm and dignified, and focus on preventing self-sabotage, it's possible to avoid these phrases.  </p>
