Mukesh Ambani donates ₹ 1.5 crore to Tirumala temple

Demonetization has badly affected not just businesses but also a lot of other institutions, among which religious ones are prominent. Now devotees visiting the famed Tirupati temple to offer prayers to Lord Balaji would require shelling out more money. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, which manages the temple, is planning to raise ticket prices after a dip in daily income has been noticed since November.<br />

TTD's daily income was about Rs 5 crore, including interest on bank deposits, according to a news report by The Times of India. A part from the 'hundi' collections, TTD's coffers are filled by the sale of tickets, 'prasad', etc.<br />

"After demonetisation, we observed a dent of Rs 1-2 crore on many days. Now, we are looking at bridging the revenue gap without burdening devotees," TTD chairman Chadalavada Krishnamurthy told TOI.<br />

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) chairman C Krishnamurthy said they were looking at a small hike in ticket prices at the Tirupati temple to offset the fall in revenue post-demonetisation.<br />

The proposal must first be cleared by the state government. Some time ago, TTD had proposed to increase the rates of tickets and 'prasad', but it was shot down by Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu.<br />

TTD tickets range from Rs 50 to Rs 5,000. Most devotees buy special darshan tickets for Rs 300. At least 2,000 devotees go for VIP darshan every day, shelling out Rs 500. "The revenue gap can be bridged with a mild hike in ticket rates or Rs 5 to Rs 10 raise for various seva," officials told TOI.

Devotees visiting Tirupati may need to pay more, thanks to demonetization

Tirupati, Feb 29 (): Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams(TTD) that governs the world famous shrine of LordVenkateswara at Tirumala Hills, near here, on Saturdaypresented its budget for 2020-2021.<p>The budget proposals envisage a total revenue ofabout Rs 3,310 crore during the fiscal year, a top TTDofficial said.</p><p>Of the total income, the cash offerings made bydevotees were projected at Rs 1,351 crore, TTD chairman YVSubba Reddy told mediapersons on the Hills.</p><p>The revenue from the interest on deposits innationalised and private banks was estimated to be about Rs706 crore, he said.</p><p>The sale of tickets for various forms of worship,including daily and weekly rituals in the temple, specialentry tickets of VIPs and the online tickets priced at Rs 300could get Rs 302 crore while the laddu 'prasadam' might amountto about Rs 400 crore, he said.</p><p>The earnings from the auction on human hair to beoffered by millions of devotees, including the aged, women andinfants, as fulfillment of their vow were likely to be Rs106.7 crore, he said.</p><p>The revenue from the TTD accommodations andmarriage halls allotted to devotees was estimated to be aroundRs 110 crore, he said.</p>About Rs 250 crore was expected to be spent on newconstruction of pilgrims' amenities, taking up repair andlaying of roads, he said. It has proposed to purchase the stock at actual cost from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (<keyword id="6359076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ttd">TTD</keyword>), which manages the shrine. <br /><br />While TTD is able to exchange <keyword id="90576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-currency">foreign currency</keyword> notes with the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) for Indian rupees, it becomes difficult to swap the coins because of their small value. Though TTD reached out to the RBI authorities repeatedly for this, it has not yielded any favourable results. <br /><br />The temple had earlier planned to dispatch the coins back to their home counties but the transportation cost was turning out to be more than the value of the coins which is about ₹10-15 million. <br /><br />It was then that Ravi Kumar Vemuri, the chairman of APNRT, proposed to buy them.<br /><br />Vemuri wants to commercialise the ‘ceremonial value’ of the coins. All coins are “sacred” in the Hindu tradition as they are used for all pujas, rituals and occasions. These are more so because they are from the Hundi or the cash chest of the lord. Therefore, the organisation believes that there will be a huge demand for them among the Telugu NRIs. <br /><br />APRNT plans to sell coins worth $20, in small sachets made with sacred cloth. Any NRI who asks for them will receive them through international courier services like Garudavega but they will have to bear the shipping charges, which will be around ₹2,000.<br /><br />APRNT has about 85,000 members spread across 111 countries. When the idea was floated on the WhatsApp group, the members were enthusiastic about it and offered to buy the sachets too. <br /><br />Earlier, the organisation proposed to take only the US and the UK currency, since they were in a huge quantity. Besides those, the temple also had about eight tonnes of Malaysian coins. TTD was planning to auction them to devotees from Tamil Nadu. However, that would mean selling them at a cheaper price. Later, APNRT offered to take these coins at the original cost as well. <br /><br />The proposal officially called ‘Seven-Hills-to-Seven-Continents’, is still awaiting a formal approval from the TTD trust board after which the APNRT will begin implementing its plan. <br /><br />This is not the first time that temple is selling away the foreign currency donated to it. It had sold another <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/lord-venkateswara-temple-to-exchange-35-tonne-of-foreign-coins-for-indian-currency/articleshow/54959032.cms">35 tonnes</a> of those back in 2016 and that lot had been mostly from Malaysia, Singapore and the US.<br />

Personal accident policies are not just about cover against accidental death or loss of limbs anymore. These days, many non-life <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> companies are offering feature-rich covers and high sum assured on these policies. According to insurance experts, many of these are really useful to customers. Consider, for example, the high sum assured of Rs5 crore or a feature like modification of house after the mishap to make it more suitable for living. They can prove to be invaluable to customers.<br />

But, the only trouble is that these additional features have a hefty premium, say experts. So, many of them are asking individuals to go for basic policy first and then consider adding useful features to it if they have the resources.<br />
<br /> “Personal accident insurance offering accidental death, permanent total disability, for a sum assured of at least 10 times annual income is a must. Plans with more features can be bought if the budget permits and if an individual needs,” says Sanjay Datta, chief — underwriting and claims, <keyword id="144335" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="ICICI-Lombard-General">ICICI Lombard General</keyword> Insurance. Mukund Seshadri, founder partner, MSV Financial Planners says, “Ideally one should have a feature-rich policy, but most people do not have their finances in place. It is better to buy a basic personal accident insurance cover first.”<br />

Personal accident insurance plans come into the picture when one meets with an accident. Such policies cover accidental death, permanent total disability (PTD), permanent partial disability (PPD). They also promise to pay weekly benefit of a fixed sum in case of temporary total disability (TTD). While, some plans offer to pay a fixed sum for broken bones, modification to the house, transportation of family and for buying blood, few others offer to pay for medical expenses arising out of an accident.<br />
<br />
Though the bouquet of benefits looks good, each of these comes at a cost. For example, while the basic plan that offers accidental death, PTD and PPD benefit for a sum assured of Rs10 lakh can be secured at Rs1,100-1,200 per year, TTD benefits may cost almost 50% more than the basic plan. If more features such as accidental medical expenses benefit are added, you may have to pay 10% to 30% more. The final number keeps increasing as you keep adding the features to the basic plan.<br />

While the cost should have a bearing on the buying decision, one should not altogether avoid extra features or high sum assured, say experts. “Your approach to buying personal accident insurance cover should be —first buy a basic cover; if you have money go for more features, and if your budget still permits, go for a high sum assured,” says Sudhir Sarnobat, CEO, medimanage.com, a health insurance advisory. For example, an individual with an annual income of Rs5 lakh should have a basic accident insurance plan for a sum assured of Rs50 lakh.<br />

If he can afford to spend more, more features can be looked at. “While shopping for additional features, individuals must decide using two factors — what is the possibility of the insured meeting with a risk arising out of an accident and how much benefit would be paid by the insurance company,” adds Sarnobat. For example, a salaried individual working as an office staff, who has a ‘paid leave’ offered by his employer, may ignore buying TTD benefit.<br />
<br /> He may not be in the high risk zone and can afford to stay at home for four weeks due to TTD arising out of an accident. Compare him with a self-employed professional, who may be travelling a lot and doesn’t have a ‘paid leave’, he should be buying a weekly benefit for TTD. “You have to look at each benefit in absolute terms, too. Some of these benefits may be irrelevant in some cases,” says an <keyword id="193338" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="actuary">actuary</keyword> who does not wish to be identified.<br />
<br />
For example, transportation of family benefit is useless if you do not have a family, or you always travel with your family. Also each of these add-on benefits has sub-limit. House or vehicle modification expense is capped at lower of Rs1 lakh or 10% of sum assured.
