<ul class="summary-list"><li>Powerful light flares coming from deep space were spotted in deep space.</li><li>Each flare was about ten billion times more powerful than our sun.</li></ul><p>Bizarre flares coming from deep space, each as powerful as ten billion suns, are baffling scientists.</p><p>These rare flashes are part of a larger event called Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient (LFBOT). LFBOTs are some of the brightest and most unpredictable known visible-light events in the universe and are poorly understood, <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://hubblesite.org/contents/news-releases/2023/news-2023-024?news=true"><u>per NASA</u></a>.</p><p>This latest LFBOT, officially called AT2022tsd, was nicknamed the Tasmanian devil after the unpredictable marsupial. It set itself apart from other LFBOTs by releasing bright flares lasting a few minutes over four months.</p><p>This is a very different pattern than what had been seen in previous LFBOTs and could help us understand these mysterious events.</p><p>"LFBOTs are already a kind of weird, exotic event, so this was even weirder," Anna Ho, a professor of astrophysics at Cornell University who led a paper on the latest findings, said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1007558?">press release</a>.</p><p>"We might be seeing a completely different channel for cosmic cataclysms," she said.</p><p>LFBOTs were first spotted in 2018, and since then scientists have only found around half a dozen more, <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=977ef2589ce0cbdafb8f7eeae126c937eeeb55366e1cb6ee464e165588c1c19c&amp;postID=6555f3c053ff61e69aa137cd&amp;postSlug=flare-billion-times-sun-baffles-scientists-2023-11&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fd41586-023-03569-3">Nature News</a> reported.</p><p>Usually, when you see a bright flash coming from space, it's linked to a supernova spewing out the remnants of a dead star.</p><p>But these rare explosions brighten and fade much more quickly. Ashley Chrimes, an astrophysicist who studies LFBOTs for the European Space Agency, told Insider in an email.</p><p>"Standard supernova models can't explain this rapid rise and fall in the luminosity," said Chrimes, who was not involved in the study.</p><p>Ho and colleagues' observations suggest the Tasmanian devil released at least 14 irregular and highly energetic bursts, each lasting only a few minutes. These occurred over almost four months.</p><p>"Amazingly, instead of fading steadily as one would expect, the source briefly brightened again, and again, and again," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.swinburne.edu.au/news/2023/11/astronomers-baffled-by-repeat-explosions/">said Ho.</a></p><p>"We had never seen anything like that before – something so fast, and the brightness as strong as the original explosion months later – in any supernova or FBOT (fast blue optical transient). We'd never seen that, period, in astronomy," she said.</p><p>The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal <a target="_blank" href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-06673-6">Nature</a> on Wednesday,</p><p>Their discovery could help scientists crack the mystery of LFBOTs. Though there are a few theories for how these enigmatic cosmic events could come to be — black holes swallowing up stars, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unexplained-bright-blue-flash-questions-origins-rare-cosmic-light-burst-2023-10">neutron stars crashing into each other</a>, and more — no one knows for sure what is behind them.</p><p>One possibility is that what we're seeing is the dying cries of a "<a target="_blank" href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/tech/100-red-objects-in-deep-space-vanished-over-the-last-70-years-a-group-of-scientists/wfzkpp9">failed supernova,</a>" Ho told Insider in an email.</p><p>This elusive phenomenon is caused by a huge dying star running out of energy before it can go supernova. The star then collapses into a black hole without expulsing its outer layers. This leaves a neutron star or a black hole surrounded by the remnants of a partial star.</p><p>To produce such brilliant flares, a black hole or neutron star would need a lot of fuel. Having access to bits of dying star hovering nearby in an accretion disk might give the black hole or neutron the fuel it needs, Ho said in an email.</p><p>"The main argument here is the duration of the flares," said Chrimes.</p><p>"The maximum physical size of the source of the emission is given by the distance light can travel in that time. In this case, the size implied by a timescale of a minute is similar to that expected for an accretion disc around a neutron star or black hole," he said.</p><p>Another possibility is that the Tasmanian devil was caused by a star merging with a black hole or a neutron star, said Ho.</p><p>"We think such mergers should exist in nature but haven't found them yet. Finding them would help us understand the black holes and neutron stars we observe today," she said.</p>

"And it is so much a part of our daily culture for so many people that it's an addiction, like many others."</p><p>"There are very few things in this world where you call the person engaging with it 'a user,'" she continued. "People who are addicted to drugs are called users and people who are on social media are called users."</p><p>The <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8840267/Meghan-Markle-accused-ripping-Social-Dilemma.html">Daily Mail </a> and <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/12934073/meghan-markle-ripping-off-netflix/">The Sun</a> were among the first publications to draw a connection between Markle's words and this quote shown in the Netflix documentary: "There are only two industries that call their customers 'users' — illegal drugs and software."</p><p>The quote is attributed in the documentary to Edward Tufte, a statistician and professor emeritus of political science, statistics, and computer science at Yale University.</p><p>"The Social Dilemma" also points out the way algorithms are designed to encourage addiction by personifying the concept. The documentary brings to life three characters who manipulate what the user sees to keep them on social media for a prolonged period of time.</p><p>"There is something algorithmically that is in there that is creating this obsession that I think is very unhealthy for a lot of people," Markle said of social-media software during the summit.</p><p>A synopsis <a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224">provided by Netflix</a> describes "TSD" as a "documentary-drama hybrid" that "explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations."</p><p>However, calling social media and "addiction" is not new. The crash Tuesday night left several people injured.</p><p>Train 188, a Northeast Regional, had left Washington, D.C., earlier Tuesday. The front of the train was going into a turn when it shook.</p><p>An Associated Press employee, Paul Cheung, was on the train and said it appeared it went off the tracks. He said he was fortunate to be at the back of the train and the front of it "looks pretty bad."</p><p>Police swarming around the crash site, in Port Richmond, a working-class area, told people to get back, away from the train.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Former Congressman Patrick Murphy was on the train and said he helped people. He tweeted photos of firefighters helping people in the wreckage.</p><p>"Pray for those injured," he said.</p><p>The cause of the crash was unknown.
