<ul><li><keyword id="198934" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hansa-Research">Hansa Research</keyword> agency claims that Republic TV did not check with it about the veracity of the document used under its name.</li><li>The agency sent a notice to Republic TV before filing the suit. </li></ul>Hansa Research, the agency appointed by Broadcast Advertising Research Council (BARC) for managing household panel for TV audience measurement, filed an FIR on October 6, 2020 with the assistance of BARC Vigilance team against Hansa’s former employee complaining of wrongdoing and tampering of people-meter homes. This FIR is being investigated by the Mumbai Police who has labelled it as the <keyword id="10073602" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="trp-scam">TRP scam</keyword>. The Police, in a Press Conference on 8th October, had alleged that Republic TV was one of the channels involved in this. Soon thereafter from October 10, Republic TV started showing something called the “Hansa Report” on its channel and said that this report does not mention Republic TV anywhere. Republic TV did not check with Hansa Research about the veracity of this document, nor did they seek permission from Hansa for use of any of its document for public broadcasting. Given that Hansa’s name and its purported report were being repeatedly used publicly without permission, Hansa filed a suit in the City Civil Court Mumbai on 16th October seeking an injunction against use of its name by Republic TV. The Court heard the plea and has posted formal hearing on this for November 25, 2020. The Court did not entertain a petition for an ad-interim injunction on use of Hansa name by Republic TV. Commenting on the case, Praveen Nijhara, CEO Hansa Research said, “We formally sent a notice to Republic TV on Monday October 12, 2020 requesting them not to use our name. Since this was not acted upon, and Republic TV continued to use the Hansa name on television, we had no option but to approach the City Civil Court seeking an injunction against use of our name. The matter is now sub-judice and will be heard in November.” The preparation and dissemination of data on TV ratings is managed by the industry body <keyword id="397085" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Broadcast-Audience-Research-Council">Broadcast Audience Research Council</keyword>. Hansa’s role is restricted to the set up and management of a certain number of panel homes on behalf of BARC. Hansa does not receive nor review any viewership information data from the panel homes. All the data on viewership goes directly to BARC who are the custodians of all TV viewership information.

<ul><li><keyword id="6131977" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Editors-Guild-of-India">The Editors Guild of India</keyword> has released a statement that urges <keyword id="4496357" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="republic-tv">Republic TV</keyword> to act responsibly and <keyword id="36730" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Police">Mumbai Police</keyword> to not victimise journalists. </li><li>In a statement, the Editors Guild said, “It is high time that the channel behaves responsibly and not compromises the safety of its journalists as well as the collective credibility of media.”</li><li>It added that the Mumbai Police must ensure that investigation does not become a tool to suppress media rights.</li></ul>The Editors Guild of India has released a statement expressing its pain to see hundreds of FIRs filed against journalists of Republic TV, saying that the ‘victimization of journalists should stop.’ “The Editors Guild of India is pained to see the unedifying spectacle of hundreds of FIRs being filed against journalists of Republic TV, which is under probe for allegedly manipulating TRPs and spreading discontent against the Mumbai police,” read its statement. It further said, “It is high time that the channel behaves responsibly and not compromises the safety of its journalists as well as the collective credibility of media. The police must ensure that its investigation does not hurt the channel’s journalists or makes any arrests. BARC says that it has proposed reviewing the current standards of measuring and reporting data and improving their statistical robustness. This will cover all Hindi, regional, English and business news channels. “Starting with the ‘News Genre’, BARC will cease publishing the weekly individual ratings for all news channels during the exercise. This exercise is expected to take around 8-12 weeks including validation and testing under the supervision of BARCs Tech Comm. BARC will continue to release weekly audience estimates for the genre of news by state and language,” BARC said in a release. Republic TV rubbished Singh's claims. The alleged fake TRP scam <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/fake-trp-racket-police-call-republic-tvs-cfo-for-questioning-6717776/">came to light</a> when rating agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) filed a complaint through Hansa Research Group, alleging that certain television channels were rigging TRP numbers. <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/fake-trp-racket-police-call-republic-tvs-cfo-for-questioning-6717776/">According to Mumbai Police</a>, some of the people whose homes these barometers have been installed have confessed that they were paid ₹500 for keeping their TV sets switched on even if they didn't watch the channels. The crime branch has so far arrested five persons in the case.
