The rupee, which opened 20 paise lower in early trade, slumped by a massive 34 paise to close at an all-time low of 83.47 (provisional) against the US dollar. In intraday trade, the rupee touched a low of 83.52 against the American currency. The rupee had earlier recorded its lowest closing level of 83.40 on December 13, 2023. “As the dollar index rallied above 104.08$, this added pressure on the rupee following a positive gap-up opening witnessed yesterday at 83.05. The rupee has fallen sharply by more than 0.30 rupees from its high of 83.05 over the last two days,” said <keyword id="20865684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jateen-trivedi" source="keywords">Jateen Trivedi</keyword>, <keyword id="21053778" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vp-research-analyst" source="keywords">VP Research Analyst</keyword>, <keyword id="19956971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lkp-securities" source="keywords">LKP Securities</keyword>. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, gained 0.72% to 104.17 as concerns over the slowing global economy boosted demand for the greenback. Most Asian currencies suffered from the better-than-expected US economic data, with the Chinese Yuan as well as the Korean Won falling in the trade. The rupee also reversed its strong performance on Thursday, when it had closed 6 paise higher. Even the gains seen in domestic equities on Friday could not stem the fall. Most experts see the currency trading in a volatile zone. “Despite strong gains in the domestic equity markets and profit-taking in global crude oil, the rupee witnessed a drastic fall. We expect the rupee to remain volatile next week and the pair could trade in the range of 83.10-83.70,” said <keyword id="20929844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rahul-kalantri" source="keywords">Rahul Kalantri</keyword>, VP-commodities at <keyword id="20318557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mehta-equities" source="keywords">Mehta Equities</keyword>. Analysts said dollar demand from importers, mainly oil companies, and debt repayment outflows weighed on the rupee. Brent crude is trading at around $85 per barrel on Friday. “Despite the dovish view on interest rates in the US, specific data-driven interest rate cuts are still distant. The rupee's range can be expected to be between 82.85-83.55, with volatility likely to persist," says Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst, LKP Securities giving reasons for the currency’s volatility. Rupee slips to a three-month low after the greenback’s sharp upward march

New Delhi, Gold prices on Thursday jumped by Rs 500 to Rs 65,650 per 10 grams in the national capital amid a rally in precious metal's rates in international markets, according to <keyword id="19969290" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hdfc-securities" source="keywords">HDFC Securities</keyword>. Maintaining its upward march for the third straight day, the precious metal touched a fresh lifetime high of Rs 65,650 per 10 grams. The yellow metal had closed at Rs 65,150 per 10 grams in the previous trade. Silver prices also rallied by Rs 400 to Rs 74,900 per kg. In the previous session, it closed at Rs 74,500 per kg. "Spot gold prices (24 carats) in the Delhi markets are trading at Rs 65,650 per 10 grams, up by Rs 500, taking bullish cues from the overseas markets," <keyword id="19969287" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saumil-gandhi" source="keywords">Saumil Gandhi</keyword>, senior analyst of commodities at HDFC Securities, said. In the global markets, spot gold at Comex was trading at USD 2,152 per ounce, up by USD 30 from the previous close. Comex spot gold reached a new high of USD 2,161.50 per ounce in Asian trading hours on Thursday after Federal Reserve Chair <keyword id="20058769" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jerome-powell" source="keywords">Jerome Powell</keyword> reiterated that the US central bank will most likely lower interest rates this year, Gandhi added. In his semiannual Humphrey-Hawkins testimony to Congress, Powell said that the US Fed remains squarely focused on its mandate to promote maximum employment and stable prices for the American people. The policy rate is likely at its peak and it will likely be 'appropriate' to cut rates at some point this year, he added. However, he observed that the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) still needs 'greater confidence' before cutting rates. Silver was trading higher at USD 24.10 per ounce. In the previous trade, it had closed at USD 23.75 per ounce. "Looking ahead, the market focus shifts to the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for February, which is poised to be a key trigger for gold prices next week. Indian investors turned cautious on Monday and might continue to remain so until a clearer picture on how far and wide the West Bank tension spreads. The Indian benchmark indices have been gaining comfort from the falling crude oil prices last week. Now, with a possibility of a spike, which can lead to another round of high inflation and high interest rate situation, investors turned risk-off. That’s when investors sell-off equities to head for safe havens like gold and bonds. “An unforeseen escalation in the Middle East has rekindled pessimism in global markets,” said <keyword id="224336" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vinod-nair" source="Orion">Vinod Nair</keyword>, head of research at Geojit Financial Services. Even before the tensions, foreign investors have been pulling out from the Indian markets. FPI outflows crossed ₹10,000 crore in September. It’s too early to say if bear markets will set in, and will largely depend on how the other Middle Eastern countries react to the current tensions. “Nothing so dramatic as bull markets turning into bears. It will take some time before we can form any meaningful opinion on how the situation will turn out,” Arun <keyword id="6358183" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kejriwal" source="Orion">Kejriwal</keyword>, founder of Kejriwal Research &amp; Investment Services told Business Insider India. <keyword id="14539133" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jateen-trivedi" source="Orion">Jateen Trivedi</keyword>, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities says that if nations like Iran get involved in the war, it could push crude oil prices even higher. “The region is a crucial hub for global oil supply, and any disruptions in production or transportation can lead to supply issues,” he added. A correction in sight This year, Indian equity markets gave 8.7% returns – twice as much as 4.4% provided by the emerging markets. Apart from short term movements like a pause in rate hikes, G20 and others, they were also guided by the possibility of the current government retaining its mandate in 2024. After a possible crude shock, experts foresee Indian investors consolidating their stock portfolios basis the returns they have provided. According to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities, the Indian markets are in a rare confluence of bull, bear and a bubble phase at the same time. “Several top large-cap and quality mid-cap stocks have hardly given any returns in the past 2-3 years. Other large and mid-cap stocks have delivered decent returns, while several mid and small caps stocks have given fantastic returns in the past 6-9 months,” the Kotak report said. “A correction in the mid cap space is long-overdue. We can’t blame it on the war, as they have been running ahead of time,” Kejriwal said. Most mid and small cap stocks are trading well above the 12-month fair values, says Kotak. Nair too agrees that there would be consolidation in the mid and small-cap segments due to their premium valuations. It’s time to go large The only stocks that might see a good performance in the months to come are the large-cap stocks which did not gain much from the bull run. “We see better investment opportunities and reward-risk balance in the top large-caps than in other parts of the market. We expect the large-cap laggards of 2022-23 to do better over the next 6-12 months,” said Kotak. Geojit Financial Services also added that long-term investors must slowly accumulate high quality stocks on declines, without taking big risks. Mid and small caps are riskier and large caps are much safer in comparison and that’s where markets could go towards. As the war picture remains hazy, the market would prefer to go on the ‘sell on rise’ mode and most experts advise against taking big risks.

Go large, be selective and cautious, say experts, as geopolitical tensions rise

The rupee reversed its four-day losing streak and rose 18 paise to 82.58 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, tracking positive sentiments in the domestic equity markets. Traders said a weak dollar overseas also supported the rupee. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened strong at 82.50 against the dollar and traded between 82.50 and 82.75. It finally settled at 82.58 (provisional) against the American currency, registering a gain of 18 paise against its previous close. On Thursday, the rupee settled at 82.76 against the US dollar. <keyword id="14539133" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jateen-trivedi" source="Orion">Jateen Trivedi</keyword>, VP Research Analyst at <keyword id="351825" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lkp-securities" source="Orion">LKP Securities</keyword>, said the movement in the rupee's favour was triggered as the participants offloaded the dollar following "positive sentiments as Eleven US banks, JP <keyword id="152186" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="morgan" source="Orion">Morgan</keyword> and others will deposit up to USD 30 billion into <keyword id="4670448" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="first-republic-bank" source="Orion">First Republic Bank</keyword> coming to rescue the lender caught up in a crisis triggered by the collapse of two US lenders". He, however, said the "rupee can continue the volatile moves as prices shall factor in the Fed's policy and Fed's viewpoint into the financial sector impacted by interest rate high cycle". Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.21 per cent lower at 104.20. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 1.26 per cent to USD 75.64 per barrel. Rupee reverses 4-day losing streak, rises 18 paise to 82.58/USD

"There is no fresh trigger to predict if the rupee will be 79 or 80 unless and until there is a conflict between US and China with regards to Taiwan, other than that there shouldn't be any correction towards 77 or 77.50 in the spot," said <keyword id="105309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Emkay-Global-Financial-Services" source="Orion">Emkay Global Financial Services</keyword> in a note. Rupee breaches the ₹78 mark against the dollar for the first time ever

Meditation isn’t about becoming a different, new or better person. In essence, it is training in awareness and developing a healthy perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings; you’re learning to observe them without judgment. Eventually, you will start to understand them better as well. In a fireside chat, bestselling author and yoga acharya, Ira Trivedi, spoke to Rich Pierson, Co-Founder and CEO of Headspace, and Andy Puddicombe, Co-Founder of Headspace, on the importance of taking time out to notice one’s surroundings. The conversation began with a short meditation session led by Andy Puddicombe at Gurgaon’s exclusive The Quorum club. It was attended by The Quorum’s members, wellness enthusiasts and entrepreneurs. When asked about how it all started, Puddicombe recalled that after completing his monastic commitment in 2004 he returned to the UK with a huge-yet-simple goal: to demystify meditation and mindfulness, and make them accessible to all. Soon after, while offering one-on-one meditation sessions at a health clinic, he met Pierson and began a skill-swap. Pierson offered him marketing advice for his clinic while Puddicombe taught him how to meditate. That exchange changed Pierson’s life and he saw, firsthand, what a difference meditation could make if taught in a more accessible way. It felt natural to empower others to experience the benefits, so both of them began working together on Headspace. The project launched officially in 2010.

 While describing their struggles, Pierson mentioned that, initially, investment was a challenge since it took time to convince people about the concept. This forced them both to get creative and find ways to make mindfulness scalable. “We started Headspace by doing events, and in 2012 we created the subscription services via an app for iOS and Android,” said Pierson. When asked about competition as their 10-year anniversary approaches, Puddicombe said he welcomed different offerings but was confident that Headspace’s focus on authenticity and science – with 70 clinical trials and 25 published papers – is what makes the app stand out. Headspace is committed to advancing mindfulness through clinically validated research, having one of the largest research pipelines of any digital health and wellness company. Headspace for Work, its B2B business, offers its products and services to more than 600 leading companies such as Hyatt, Adobe, GE and Starbucks to help them build healthier, more productive cultures and higher-performing organisations. Headspace partners with many of the world’s most recognisable brands, such as Apple, Amazon and more. Ira Trivedi, who has long been an advocate for yoga and wellness in India, found herself at the right spot in the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown. Ira Yoga Wellness, which under its umbrella had physical classes along with a gamified app where people were rewarded for doing yoga, saw a sudden spike in interest. “The app actually started doing well during the pandemic as corporates offered their employees something more during work from home as a part of their corporate wellness initiatives,” Trivedi told Business Insider. Trivedi has been at the forefront of the yoga movement in India having been a part of the first International Day of Yoga at Rajpath New Delhi. While Trivedi calls the app a passion project, it was her quick decision to go online with live yoga classes that really did the trick. “We began with offering free yoga classes and everyone came online. We slowly grew from having one class a day to having six-seven classes a day. We grew along with the customer demand and kept responding to what our students wanted,” she said. Since March, Ira Yoga Wellness has launched yoga for kids, yoga for seniors, yoga for teens and more such classes to keep their students engaged. Doubling down every month Today, they have over 5000 active users and have seen a 100% month-on-month growth with repeat customers. Ira believes it is the different way in which they teach yoga that got their students hooked. For any live class, they create an ambience with soothing live music to make it as real as possible for the students. “We have teachers from five different countries and all follow the standard Yog Love format of teaching. We really figured out how to teach yoga online – every single class was interactive and it wasn’t like a youtube channel you are just following,” she said. And it is this format that got their users talking. “We have seen a completely organic growth, which is our strength. Most of our growth is from referrals where our current members invite their friends and family to come try yoga with us,” she said. A long road ahead for Yog Love They have also started live training courses to encourage more people to become yoga teachers. “It’s beautiful to see more and more women sign up for it. By teaching yoga from home, women can earn money while staying at home and all they need is a phone,” she said. Yoga might have become a favourite at-home exercise during lockdown. But Trivedi is gunning for more. During the lockdown, they even organised Yogathons which was an 11-hour event of yoga. “Yogathon is a whole day of yoga, meditation, healing, nutrition, and more for our users,” she said. While Yog Love has been profitable from the get go because they don’t spend much on marketing and instead have relied on organic growth and brand collaborations, Trivedi has left one door open for the possibilities of more. “We are very happy with where we are today, but we are being approached by many to consider expanding and we are beginning to consider external funding to go global,” she said. The latest number to have had it’s video launched by the makers is called <keyword id="3081049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="nazdeekiyaan">Nazdeekiyaan</keyword>, and carries a beautiful ballroom dance sequence. However, what adds to it is the fact that the song is shot in black and white, a rare feature these days when everyone is trying to include as many HD colors in their songs and movies. 
 The song, which has been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and sung by Nikhil Paul George and Neeti Mohan, has its music composed by <keyword id="142520" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Trivedi">Amit Trivedi</keyword>. In the song, we see a dapper <keyword id="6355887" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shahid-Kapoor">Shahid Kapoor</keyword>, dressed in a white tuxedo, dancing with <keyword id="6354526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alia-Bhatt">Alia Bhatt</keyword>, who looks stunning in a white gown. We also catch glimpses of <keyword id="51959" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pankaj-kapur">Pankaj Kapur</keyword>, who in real life is Shahid’s father but plays Alia’s father in the movie.

Shaandaar continues to sizzle through its songs, Nazdeekiyaan warms hearts

As many as five US-based law firms are investigating charges of whether <keyword id="20356" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="igate">IGate</keyword> Board of Directors failed to maximise gains of <keyword id="6376563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shareholders">shareholders</keyword> before inking the multi-billion dollar deal with French rival <keyword id="10863" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="CapGemini">Capgemini</keyword>. 
 
These law firms are reaching out to shareholders and investors of IGATE to join their investigation to ascertain if the company's Board violated their mandate, which if proved could lead to class action law suits against the firm. 
Earlier this week, Capgemini agreed to acquire the New Jersey-based company for USD 4 billion in an all cash deal. 
 
The firms -- WeissLaw, Rosen Law Firm, Ryan &amp; Maniskas, Block &amp; Leviton and Faruqi &amp; Faruqi -- are investigating for "possible breaches of fiduciary duty and other violations of law" as well as the fairness with which IGate Board considered and approved the transaction. 
When contacted, IGate declined to comment on the matter. Fiduciary duty is generally termed as a legal obligation of one party to act in best interests of another. The obligated party is typically a fiduciary, that is, someone entrusted with the care of money or property. 
 
Boston-based law firm Block &amp; Leviton said: "Under the terms of the proposal, Capgemini will acquire each IGate share for $ 48 in cash, a paltry premium of approximately 4.7 per cent. 
"Not surprisingly, because it was able to acquire IGate at such a substantial discount to its true value, shares of Capgemini soared as high as $ 85.77 upon the announcement of the proposed transaction, representing double the premium received by IGate shareholders." 
 
Market reports have stated that Capgemini has already secured voting power of 54 per cent to push the deal through, the firm added. "This support is likely underpinned by the nearly 26 per cent of the company held by <keyword id="1042241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashok-Trivedi">Ashok Trivedi</keyword> and <keyword id="1042242" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sunil-Wadhwani">Sunil Wadhwani</keyword>, the co-founders and co-chairmen of IGate. 
 
"The two co-founders will collect approximately $ 1 billion of the total $ 4 billion in merger consideration expected to be paid in the proposed deal," it added. 
 The <keyword id="2829483" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="high-analyst">high analyst</keyword> price target on the investment websiteYahoo! <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> was $ 55, about 15 per cent higher than the offer price. 
The value of the company's shares has increased around 35 per cent in just the past four months, it added. 
 <keyword id="2829405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="WeissLaw-LLP">WeissLaw LLP</keyword>, a class action shareholder rights law firm, in a statement said it is investigating "possible breaches of fiduciary duty and other violations of law" by IGATE Board. 
Under the terms of the agreement, IGate shareholders will receive $ 48 in cash for each share they own. 
 
"WeissLaw is investigating whether IGate’s Board acted to maximise shareholder value prior to entering into agreement. Notably, the offer price represents a premium of less 5 per cent over the company stock's April 24, 2015 trading price of $ 45.93.

The IGate journey IGate was founded by Sunil Wadhwani and Ashok Trivedi in 1996. It went public on NASDAQ the very same year. Post a stellar few years of growth, IGate made a bid for its first major acquisition, acquiring majority stake in <keyword id="46908" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="patni-computers">Patni Computers</keyword> in 2011, delisting the firm a year later. Wadhwani and Trivedi roped in Apax Partners to complete the Patni acquisition, making the private equity firm a key stakeholder in the merged entity with 28.9% stake valued today at close to $1.5 bn. 
 
Given the strong growth momentum, it didn’t take long before IGate breached the $1bn revenue mark in 2012, soon after the Patni acquisition. Around May 2013, the company was riddled by an internal controversy that blew out of proportions and seriously threatened its reputation as a ‘well-governed’ company in the market. It was then that Phaneesh Murthy, its former CEO was fired over failure to disclose his personal relationship with a subordinate in the company. 
 
After several months of scouting, Wadhwani and Trivedi zeroed-in on Ashok Vemuri to takeover as IGate’s new CEO, in September 2013. Vemuri, then Infosys' board member who was also head of Americas besides chief of the manufacturing and engineering vertical, as president and chief executive officer, was known to harbour aspirations of taking over Infosys as its CEO. Once offered, Vemuri didn’t think twice before making the move. 
 
In fact, when Vemuri had quit Infosys, he was already one of the top contenders to become the firm’s first CEO, who wasn’t a co-founding member. Within the IT circuit it is said that Vemuri had had enough with the wait and watch game and decided to take on IGate’s offer almost as soon as it was made to him. 
 
In 2013, IGate also reached the $ 2bn market capex mark and completely reorganised the company in 2014 into vertical-based business units.

The fastest way to expand the existing business is by acquiring another company. And it appears that Europe's biggest IT services company <keyword id="10863" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CapGemini">Capgemini</keyword> is likely to acquire NASDAQ-listed <keyword id="20356" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="igate">Igate</keyword>, which was founded by <keyword id="1042242" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Wadhwani">Sunil Wadhwani</keyword> and <keyword id="1042241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Trivedi">Ashok Trivedi</keyword>. This was revealed by multiple sources in a Times of India (TOI) report. 
 
According to the news daily, if the deal gets striked, it will be one of the biggest M&amp;As in the IT services arena. 
 
The TOI futher reported that in 2014, Igate had $1.27 billion as revenue. And now, its market capitalization stands at $3.6 billion. 
 The speculation about Igate being sold started soon after <keyword id="34499" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-equity">private equity</keyword> giant Apax Partners, which financed much of Igate's $1.2-billion acquisition of <keyword id="46963" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patni-computer">Patni Computer</keyword> in 2011, converted its debt into equity four months ago to become Igate's largest shareholder in the company. 
 
Currently, Apax owns 29% stake in Igate, while Igate founders together hold 25% of the shares. According to the TOI report, Capgemini is looking at acquiring the 54% stake held by the promoters and Apax initially. However, it may later take Igate private by buying out the shares of other shareholders, sources told TOI. 
 Capgemini told TOI, "We do not comment on market rumours or speculation." Igate had not responded to queries at the time of going to print. There had been talk of French IT company <keyword id="327292" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Atos">Atos</keyword> and <keyword id="6380915" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BPO">BPO</keyword> <keyword id="6556311" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Major">major</keyword> <keyword id="25698" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Genpact">Genpact</keyword> looking at acquiring Igate, but Capgemini is said to have nearly sealed the deal. 
 Peter Bendor Samuel, CEO of <keyword id="107837" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Everest-Group">Everest Group</keyword>, said Igate would make an excellent acquisition for Capgemini. "Th<keyword id="267073" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="EY">ey</keyword> are the right size to absorb, not too small so it does not move the dial, but not so big that they will struggle. Igate will be accretive to margins. Capgemini has a large net operating loss in the US from their failed acquisition of EY's consulting practice, and the large <keyword id="1472170" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iGate-US">Igate US</keyword> presence will allow them to use it," he said.

A melodramatic opening always promises more entertainment ahead. By now, bookies have acquired new cell phones to mint money, quite oblivious to the verdict that has sounded like a death knell to <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> chief N Srinivasan.  Supreme court verdict came after the committee probing the alleged corruption charges in the IPL matches said in its report that Gururaj Meiyappan “the face and team official” of IPL franchise <keyword id="13886" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chennai-Super-Kings">Chennai Super Kings</keyword>, headed by <keyword id="10138" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni">Mahendra Singh Dhoni</keyword> was indeed corrupt. The court ruled that the allegations of betting and passing information to bookies and players, in order to encourage betting for huge sums of money, ‘stand proved’.

Supreme Court has upheld the recommendation.
