<ul><li>US-based electric vehicle maker Triton is looking to hire new talent in India as the company gears up to tap the country's sedan segment.</li><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, the company's founder and CEO, Himanshu Patel, revealed that they plan to hire roughly between 5,000 to 10,000 people over the next year (2021- 2022)</li><li>The company currently has its research and development unit set up in Pune, and is also in talks with different state authorities to set up its facility in India.</li><li>Check out the latest news and updates on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/">Business Insider</a>.</li></ul>US-based electric vehicle maker Triton is looking to hire new talent in India as the company gears up to tap the car segment in the country with its electric sedan N4. For the uninitiated, Triton is looking to invest around $650 million to $1 billion in setting up a manufacturing facility in India.<br /><br />In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, the company's founder and chief executive officer (CEO), Himanshu Patel, revealed that they plan to hire roughly between 5,000 to 10,000 people over the next year (2021- 2022) and about 35,000 to 40,000 people over the next five years in India.<br /><br />The company has been actively recruiting and posting jobs on its LinkedIn page. The company, in a written response, said they are looking to hire graduates in the automotive industry for segments such as mechanical, IT, Artificial intelligence, and Internet of things. "They could be engineering grads, diploma holders and technical people," the company said. <br /><br />Triton recently posted a job opening for an entry-level position for "<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/2388169063/?refId=Xx1wfMMFrurRoNrFGlZyqA%3D%3D&amp;trackingId=tnespGZPix6mmrh71AYjNg%3D%3D">embedded design engineer</a>" in Mumbai. The company currently has its research and development unit set up in Pune, and it is also in talks with different state authorities to set up its facility in India. However, the CEO declined to give further details. <br /><br />Responding to a query on average salary, the company said it would be too early for them to comment as they are still finalising a few of the job contracts.<br /><br />Patel, in an interview, told Business Insider that the company has been hiring for quite a while now without revealing many details in public. He had then said the company would slowly put out job listings on its LinkedIn pages and other resources. Patel said the company has a huge fan following about 8 million users on LinkedIn, which helps them identify a lot of employment opportunities.<br /><br /><strong>The company has huge plans for India<br /></strong><br />Triton said it had modified the models as per the need of Indian citizens adding a solar roof to feed the battery when stuck in traffic jams and promising long battery life. <br /><br />Patel further explained that the solar panel in their car could generate up to 1.3 kilowatts per hour, reducing the air conditioning from a 3 KW draw to a 1.3 KW draw. “This offsets the losses of mileage or kilometres in India. An American electric car maker is on a hiring spree in India — plans to add 10,000 jobs over the next year

<ul><li><keyword id="10577954" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Triton-EV">Triton EV</keyword> will be opening its new manufacturing facility in the Zahirabad area of <keyword id="68884" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword></li><li>It is planning to invest about $1.5 billion in this manufacturing facility over the next five years</li><li>Meanwhile, the central government is trying to lure <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> into manufacturing its EVs in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword></li></ul><br />US-based <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> (EV) giant Triton, which competes with <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword>’s Tesla, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Telangana to open its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the state’s Zahirabad area. <br /><br />This facility, which will be built over a million square feet area, can create close to 24,000 <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> in the state, Triton EV and Telangana government said. Triton EV is planning to invest about $1.5 billion in this manufacturing facility over the next five years, the company said in the statement. The first tranche -- $300 million -- will be infused in the upcoming months.<br /><br />Triton EV’s Chairperson and Managing Director <keyword id="192817" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himanshu-Patel">Himanshu Patel</keyword> has claimed that they already have $2.2 billion worth of purchase orders from India. Telangana government, too, has given an order of 3000 EVs to Triton. <br /><br /><br />“We are excited to know about Triton EV’s expertise and vision for the EV market… Industrial policy of the state which is proactively crafted towards fast process driven decision making and action towards bringing new investments in the state,” Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao (also known as KTR), Telangana's minister for Municipal Administration &amp; Urban Development, Industries &amp; Commerce, and IT said on the occasion.<br /><br /><br />The manufacturing facility will produce Triton EVs not only for the Indian market, but also for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the entire Middle East region. Notably, rival Tesla is also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/elon-musks-tesla-cars-to-set-up-its-production-unit-in-karnataka-says-karnataka-cm/articleshow/80905036.cms">set</a> to make an entry into India this year and plans to set up a research and development (R&amp;D) unit in <keyword id="6354321" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>. <br /><br /><br />Unlike Triton, Tesla will only be focusing on selling in the Indian market and not manufacturing here. However, the Indian government has been trying to attract the Elon Musk-led company into manufacturing in the country by giving subsidies and other benefits.<br /><br /><br />Indian transport minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword>, in an<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/india-tesla-minister-exclusive-idUSKCN2AU1AS"> interview </a>with Reuters, said that India is ready to offer incentives to ensure Tesla’s cost of production remains lower than China if the company committed to start making EVs domestically. <br /><br /><br />Gadkari had previously also stated that Tesla will be starting off by selling in India and would later look into starting assembling in India. Tesla’s rival Triton to create 24,000 jobs in Telangana with new electric vehicle factory

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two <keyword id="6355447" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="delivery">delivery</keyword> companies reportedly cut ties with <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, accusing it of poor pay and work conditions.</li><li>Triton Transportation and Last Mile Delivery say Amazon changed rules and routes without notice. </li><li>They're reportedly seeking $36 million and won't resume deliveries unless their conditions are met.</li></ul><p>Two delivery companies in Oregon made the decision to effectively shut down rather than keep delivering for Amazon, according to <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7ez5x/amazon-delivery-companies-revolt-against-amazon-shut-down">Vice</a>. </p><p>Last Mile Delivery and Triton Transportation stopped working with Amazon, which is their only client, last week, <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/2021/06/amazon-delivery-contractors-quit-portland-routes-citing-unsafe-conditions.html">The Oregonian</a> reported.</p><p>"Amazon has been nickel and diming us so bad that if we don't make change we can no longer offer the support and incentives that thus far we have been able to provide," wrote Last Mile Delivery co-owner Tracy Bloemer in a letter to workers seen by The Oregonian. "We believe most of the routes are unsafe and require drivers to deliver in an unsafe manner."</p><p>The companies sent a letter to Amazon accusing the <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> giant of "intolerable, unconscionable, unsafe, and most importantly, unlawful" conduct in the past two years, according to Vice. Together, the delivery companies employ roughly 150 drivers and make more than 20,000 Amazon deliveries in the Portland area on average every day, The Oregonian reports. </p><p>The companies said Amazon nixed delivery routes and changed rules without notifying them, according to Vice. The letter, obtained by Vice says that, because drivers commit to routes ahead of time, Last Mile and Triton are still on the hook for wages even if Amazon cuts routes at the last minute due to low inventory or warehouse staffing. </p><p>In the letter, the companies also accused Amazon of accessing drivers' personal information, reducing reimbursements, firing drivers without giving the companies a say in the matter, and allocating deliveries unevenly among workers. Because deliveries weren't evenly divided, some workers ended up needing to drive faster, potentially endangering other drivers or pedestrians, and work 12-hour shifts, even though Amazon only reimburses them for 10-hour shifts, according to Vice. </p><p>Last Mile and Triton are seeking $36 million to cover company damages and pay for laid-off drivers, Vice reports. They told the news outlet they won't resume Amazon deliveries unless the company agrees to its terms regarding pay and working conditions. </p><p>"Earlier this week, two Delivery Service Partners abruptly threatened to stop servicing the Amazon account and jeopardize the livelihood of their drivers if we did not pay them $35MM within 48 hours along with a string of other demands," Amazon spokesperson Kate Kudrna told Insider in an email response on Friday. "We refused their demands and they followed through with their threat, terminating their contract with us, leaving their employees confused and looking for answers. We're doing everything we can to support the affected employees including connecting them with other Delivery Service Partners in the area who are hiring."</p><p>Amazon says it has more than 2,000 delivery service partners employing more than 115,000 delivery associates across the US. These workers earn more than $17.50 an hour on average, according to the company.</p><p>Amazon came under fire earlier this year after drivers said they had to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-drivers-say-peeing-in-bottles-common-despite-company-denials-2021-3">pee in bottles</a> because they didn't have time to use the restroom on their routes. Amazon has denied those claims. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-delivery-driver-warehouse-employee-working-conditions-van-cameras-2021-3">Delivery workers</a> have also expressed frustration with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-delivery-cameras-tech-track-drivers-bezos-2021-4">surveillance cameras</a> that Amazon said it installed in vans for workers' safety.</p><p>Working conditions for the company's warehouse workers are also under scrutiny, with one analysis finding that these Amazon workers were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-workers-face-more-injuries-than-competitors-report-2021-6">almost twice as likely to be injured</a> than their counterparts at Walmart.</p><p>Last Mile Delivery, and Triton Transportation did not respond to requests for comment. </p>

<ul><li><keyword id="6363378" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="srcc" source="Orion">SRCC</keyword>’s recruitment drive season saw a 32.34% increase in gross value of offers.</li><li>The highest package offered was ₹25 lakh per year, while average was ₹8.31 lakh per year.</li><li>Companies like McKinsey &amp; Company, Bain Capability Network, Dalberg Advisors, Deutsche Bank were top recruiters.</li></ul>The recruitment season 2020-21 of <keyword id="6542932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shri-ram-college-of-commerce" source="Orion">Shri Ram College of Commerce</keyword> (SRCC), which is located in north campus of Delhi University ⁠— is also ranked among the top 10 colleges list by National Institutional Ranking Framework (<keyword id="6396110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF" source="Orion">NIRF</keyword>) ⁠— observed a record of 350 plus offers extended by recruiters in more than 15 sectors with highest compensation of ₹25,00,000 per annum.<br /><br />The highest package offered was ₹25 lakh per year, the average package was ₹8,31,000 and the median package offered was ₹6,54,000.<br /><br />According to the data report shared by the <keyword id="12255129" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Placement-cell-of-SRCC" source="Orion">Placement cell of SRCC</keyword>, the recruitment drive registered a record 32.34% increment in the gross value of offers to a massive ₹30.48 crores. <br /><br />The report also highlights that there was a 29.62% surge in the number of offers given by companies to SRCC students despite COVID-19.<br /><br />The top-recruiting companies were McKinsey &amp; Company, Bain Capability Network, Dalberg Advisors, Deutsche Bank, Citibank, Accenture Strategy, Fischer Jordan.<br /><br />The internship season 2020-21 also recorded a significant result with the highest stipend offered was a whopping ₹1,50,000 per month, while the average stipend offered was ₹34,000 per month. Companies like Hindustan Unilever, DE Shaw, EY were top internship recruiters this season who extended offers across various domains.<br /><br />“Though we were a bit sceptical initially due to the economic recession, our fears turned out to be unfounded as the number of placement recruiters and the number of offers reached an all-time high. Private equity is backing big e-commerce deals

<div id="ooyalaplayer" style="width: 800px; height: 450px;"></div><div style="display:none;" id="kalturavideoplaceholder">kalturavideoplaceholder</div><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Right now, an Indiegogo campaign for a device that its makers claim is "</span><a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/triton-world-s-first-artificial-gills-re-breather#/" target="_blank">the future of underwater breathing</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">" is raking in cash - more than $600,000 at the time of this post, $100,000 of which poured in over just 24 hours.</span></p><p>It's easy to see the appeal of the handheld device, called the "Triton." Diving equipment is heavy and complicated. Meanwhile, the Triton looks seductively simple and the campaign says it "allows you to breathe underwater."</p><p>But despite the slick crowdfunding campaign,<strong> there's no real evidence that this device actually works</strong>, multiple experts told Tech Insider.</p><p>One of them is Neal Pollock, a research associate at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology at Duke University Medical Center, and the research director for the <a href="http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/">Divers Alert Network</a> - a non-profit organization that helps divers in medical emergencies and promotes dive safety.</p><p>"In concept it sounds very good and it's very exciting," Pollock tells Tech Insider, but "I would not encourage anyone pulling out a wallet."</p><p>For the makers of Triton to prove they've invented a device that can actually do what they say it can, Pollock and other experts want to see more evidence; the crowdfunding campaign and <a href="http://tritongills.com/" target="_blank">Triton website</a> simply don't provide enough to go on.</p><p>Regardless, Pollock notes the technological challenges involved in creating a device like Triton are so vast that "it's not realistic, it's science fiction" - more in the realm of James Bond in "<a href="http://www.jamesbondlifestyle.com/product/thunderball-breather-and-die-another-day-breather" target="_blank">Thunderball</a>" or Jedi knights in "<a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/A99_aquata_breather" target="_blank">Star Wars: Episode I</a>."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><h2>Why making a device like this is such a challenge</h2><p>The Triton campaign claims its device filters water through tiny holes in the "gills" that extract oxygen. A tiny battery-powered "micro compressor" then stores the oxygen in a miniature storage tank, from which a swimmer can "breathe freely."</p><p>For an artificial underwater breathing device that'd work like "underwater gills," Pollock says you have to solve three major issues.</p><p>First, your device has to actually extract enough oxygen from water to fulfill your biological needs. In theory, a device could pull enough oxygen from water to do this, but it would have to be incredibly efficient and it would need to filter enough water to actually collect all that oxygen.</p><p>In 2014, when the Triton device was first proposed, marine biologist and diver Alistair Dove <a href="http://www.deepseanews.com/2014/01/triton-not-dive-or-dive-not-there-is-no-triton/">weighed in on this problem at Deep Sea News</a>.</p><p>Dove notes that even if a device is 100% efficient at pulling oxygen from water, you'd still need to force enough water through a pump to collect all the oxygen required to breathe normally - upwards of five liters every 15 seconds. He calculated doing so would require a pump bigger than the Triton itself. And since there's apparently no water pump on the device, it's unlikely enough water could naturally pass through it while swimming to provide the oxygen our bodies need.</p><p>Second, even if you'd solved the oxygen extraction issue, you'd then need to get that gas into a storage chamber. The Triton campaign says the device has a "very <strong>powerful</strong> modified micro compressor" (emphasis theirs) to store it.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Compressing oxygen requires a lot of energy, and you'd have to store enough of the gas to actually breathe underwater. Also, your storage vessel needs to be strong enough to withstand the incredibly high pressures required to store an adequate volume in such a small container.</p><p>Triton essentially claims it has the technology to do this in the palm of your hand - for example, check out the size of the storage tank in the Triton schematic (labeled in blue as "Air Tank").</p><p>"[T]heir battery system would have to be orders of magnitude more efficient than anything on the market," deep-sea ecologist Andrew David Thaler told Tech Insider in an email. "At which point you have to wonder why you'd wrap that up in a gimmicky set of gills rather than selling the battery technology. It'd be like cracking cold fusion, but only using it to power a novelty clown lamp."</p><p>Finally, even if you could extract the oxygen from the water and had the power and technology to store it, it's still not enough. Divers don't just breathe freely from closed-circuit storage tanks; you need a system that provides you with just enough oxygen, and no more than that.</p><p>"You have to deliver enough for physiological needs but not so much that you would create a toxic environment," something that would become more and more of an issue if you went deeper and the gas was more compressed, explains Pollock.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>Closed-circuit rebreather technology that provides all the oxygen you need to breathe does exist - it's what divers use when going deep - but those systems carefully meter out oxygen and rely on other gases (like helium or nitrogen) to help make up the difference in the total volume breathed into your lungs.</p><p>All of this technology may look familiar: It's a full scuba setup.</p><p>"Each one [of those issues] individually is almost insurmountable with a unit that small," says Pollock. "Putting the three of them together, I just don't see it in our immediate future."</p><p>To be clear, Pollock and others are not saying a device like Triton could never happen. But when it does happen, its inventors will need to show that they've made something that works.</p><p>The team behind Triton's Indiegogo campaign - including designer Jeabyun Yeon, the campaign's leader - did not respond to Tech Insider's multiple requests for comment by phone and email, which included questions about how it had solved these problems.</p><p>On the Indiegogo campaign page, however, Triton co-founder Saeed Khademi has responded to several commenters who posted Alistair Dove's Deep Sea News post (you can only comment if you've donated to the campaign).</p><p>Khademi, describes himself as a Swedish entrepreneur, told one crowdfunder: "Yes I have a very easy explanation for that, first of all that article is from Jan 2014 that more then 2 years ago, and second the technology withTriton is not the same, because we have not yet released the full technology data of Triton due to our patents, and what the article is saying is a theory we had when we first just had designed Triton, we have achieved a lot since then :)."</p><p>None of Khademi's responses explain how they'd solve any of the problems that scientists have pointed out with the device.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><h2>No reason to believe this works</h2><p>As a diver, I can tell you that breathing underwater is one of the most magical experiences possible. I want this to work. But I'd want to see proof that it does before actually using it to breathe underwater - or before paying $299 for one.</p><p>Thaler, who evaluates ocean-based crowdfunding campaigns on the website <a href="http://www.southernfriedscience.com/">Southern Fried Science</a>, points out there a number of red flags.</p><p>A big one, Thaler told Tech Insider, is that the device shown in the campaign appears identical to the concept art created two years ago by a Yeon, who has no identifiable background in physics or engineering. (The other two members of the team include an entrepreneur and a marketer, and the campaign says they'd like to hire a "technician in marine technology" sometime in the fall - right before they're supposed to ship the device, in December 2016.)</p><p>"To have pitched a piece of concept art and in two years made no substantive changes suggests to me that it is very unlikely they have a working device," Thaler writes. It's also worth pointing out that <a href="https://support.indiegogo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204510248-Running-A-Hardware-Campaign">Indiegogo does not require a working prototype</a>.</p><p>In the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyrQc1Z4g3Y">videos</a> the Triton team has posted "demonstrating the technology," there's also no shot of anyone underwater that lasts longer than a minute. Tech Insider has asked for footage that would show someone using the device for a longer period of time, which would go a long way towards showing that <em>something</em> functional has been created, but we haven't yet heard back.</p><p>"I think there's very good reason to be skeptical," says Pollock.</p><p>Again, we love this idea - it's looked <a href="http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/7/79/Kenobi's_breather.png/revision/latest?cb=20130809183220">fun in movies</a> <a href="http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/photos/uncategorized/2009/04/07/underwater_breather.png">for decades</a>. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, a trade organization, predicts that the global market will be $140 billion in 10 years.</br></br></p>
<p>Studying UAS is relatively new, too. The University of North Dakota started offering the first bachelor's degree program in 2009, with other public schools like Kansas State and aviation-oriented private schools like Embry Riddle following suit. In total, 30 universities now offer UAS degree programs, with community colleges offering two-year degrees as well.</p>
<p>While most of the news about UAS centers around their military applications, experts say the growth is going to come through private work in the US, whether it's farmers inspecting fields, meteorologists investigating hurricanes, or construction workers surveying sites.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p>Kurt Barnhart, who oversees Kansas State University's UAS program, says that most of the program's grads head to work for government contractors with military applications, many of whom send grads overseas on deployment. But there's also an uptick of grads joining US-based startups, he says.</p>
<p>The high salaries relate to the specialization and travel that comes with the job.</p>
<p class="p1">"If it involves overseas deployment, starting salary is close to six figures, $80,000 plus deployment pay, an additional compensation package for being deployed and having to spend six months out of the year sequestered away in Afghanistan," Barnhart says. </p>
<p class="p1">Domestic jobs - with startup companies like <a href="http://www.roboflight.com/" target="_blank">Roboflight</a> or <a href="http://precisionhawk.com/" target="_blank">Precision Hawk</a> - start at about $60,000 a year. Compare that with first-year pilots of conventional aircraft; <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2009/06/16/pilot-pay-want-to-know-how-much-your-captain-earns/" target="_blank">they start out at as low as $21,000 a year</a>. </p>

<p class="p1">Philip Ellerbroek, Roboflight's global director of sales, says that charting a career in UAS requires understanding the facets of the field. You could design the hardware itself, train in piloting the aircraft, or write software code to make the whole thing work. You also have to factor in scale of the vehicle itself: Flying a hobbyist plane won't require a degree, but if you want to pilot <a href="http://www.saffm.hq.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-100128-072.pdf" target="_blank">a $4 million military device like a Predator</a>, you need specialization. </p>
<p class="p1">Ellerbroek advises would-be UAS grads to get close to the companies in the field, since a formal <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> won't give you all the knowledge you need. </p>
<p class="p1">"Like everything else, you can't learn it all in a classroom or a book," he says. "You need to a do an internship, tinker a lot on your own, or read a lot online." </p>
<p class="p1">His favorite online resource: <a href="http://diydrones.com/" target="_blank">DIYDrones</a>, started by Chris Anderson, the former Wired editor-in-chief who started 3D Robotics, perhaps the "it" startup in the field.</p>

<h3 class="p1">What You Learn When You're Getting A UAS Degree</h3>
<p class="p1">Ben Trapnell runs the UAS program at the University of North Dakota, the first of its kind when it started in 2009. </p>
<p class="p1">After completing the program - which investigates the systems involved in the air and on the ground for a UAS, how to take photographs and other forms of remote sensing, and commercial-grade flight simulation - students become commercially certified pilots.</p>
<p class="p1">"Many students get a flight instructor certificate as well," Trapnell says. "It's proven to be a real hiring advantage - companies want them to teach UAS to other employees."</p>
<p class="p1">UND students have received starting salaries of over $60,000, he says. That figure doubles or triples if they go overseas. But UND isn't just trying to develop operators of aircraft. It also aims to train people to build the devices themselves.</p>
<p class="p1">"We're not trying to develop the operators," he says, "but develop the skill sets our grads need so they can become leaders in civil UAS that's developing. What they're going to do is hopefully percolate to the top and be the leaders of the civil UAS, and bridge the gap between engineering and the pure operators."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>

Majoring In Drones Could Earn You A 6-Figure Salary

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Renowned physicist and Star Trek screenwriter Leonard Mlodinow has some pretty awe ome predictions about the future, which we got to hear when we caught up with him recently here in New York.</p><p>For one, <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Mlodinow (who, by the way, has </span><a href="http://www.hawking.org.uk/the-grand-design.html">co-written a book with Stephen Hawking</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, written for popular TV shows such as MacGyver and Star Trek: The Next Generation, and currently teaches physics at Cal Tech) thinks we'll all be <span>part of one giant social network in the next 20 years. </span></span></p><p>"<span>You'll probably just have something embedded in you," he told Business Insider , "a microchip of sorts or some interface...and it's just easier to talk to anyone in the world immediately."</span></p><p><span>He has some insights on the state of the world now, too, especially on people who say they don't believe in climate change. </span></p><p><span>"</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em; color: #000000;"></span><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">I think they're totally ignorant. They have no idea how to approach the problem or what the evidence is and probably haven't read the literature," Mlodinow said. "</span></span><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 1.5em;">If they deny the <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> the science in that area, they should not trust MRI machines or X-rays and they shouldn't use a cell phone."</span></p><p><em>Here's a transcript of our whole conversation with Mlodinow, edited lightly for clarity and length.</em></p><p><strong>BUSINESS INSIDER: <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">To the casual observer, you have an incredibly varied history.</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LEONARD MLODINOW:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I became a physicist, worked in academic physics as faculty at Cal tech, and went into writing for Hollywood, went into computer games, and went into writing books and teaching at Caltech again.</span></p><p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">How did you end up as a screenwriter for "Star Trek: The Next Generation?"</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Well, I got that job because they'd read something I'd written for MacGyver and they liked it and they hired me. When I was as Caltech I started writing screenplays. I used to write short stories just for fun. And when I got the job at Caltech, having come from Northern California - where people are rather prejudiced against Southern California - I was too. And I'm thinking, 'What will I do in Southern California? If I go there I'm gonna write screenplays to see what happens. And I started knocking on doors and I quit doing physics and got an apartment in Hollywood and started writing and got a really crappy job for a really crappy show, but I lived off writing for that show for a while, and it got better and I got an agent and a better show and just climbed my way up. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p><strong>BI: <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You've cowritten a book with Stephen Hawking. He says in the next 100 years computers will be smarter than humans and surpass us in artificial intelligence. What do you think?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It's possible - I wouldn't say it's outrageous. I wouldn't think that neither he nor I knows, and neither of us will be around in the next 100 years to be disproved. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I guess I should remind you that he said in the 1980's that by the end of the century, we would solve all of physics. We would have the unified theory of everything. And in 2005 I was talking to him and I brought that up and I said, 'What do you think now?' And he said, 'I still think by the end of the century we're gonna have everything solved.' So, he seems to think that by the end of the century, whatever century you're in, everything will be done. And if it isn't, then he says the same thing again when the next century starts. Knowing him, he might be around next century.</span></p><p>But I think that the kind of computers we've built today are in general nothing like how the brain works. The brain is a massively paralleled processor and we are starting to use parallel processing and they used that in the LHC [Large Hadron Collider) to analyze the data. But, I don't know. There's a long way to go, it's a long time, and people are working on the problem.</p><p>Who will ever know? How do you even judge? A computer is much different from a brain. Are we going to have something with like 86 billion transistors that are each connected to a thousand or ten thousand other ones? Probably not quite like that. How will we know? I don't think the Turing test is a really good way of answering that question. It'll be a different kind of intelligence.</p><p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In your mind, what will society look like in the next 20 years? The next 100 years?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In the next 100 years, I have no idea, and I don't think anyone does, so if they tell you, they're just making it up. In the next 20 years, I can look back to 1995 and I can take that difference and then move it forward. I feel like the explosion of mass communication will continue and we will be even more connected and easily connected to other people than we are today without having to carry around these devices. Information is very fluid and easy to access - what we'll do with that, I don't know. I think that's the next step, because you can drown in that information and also a lot of the information floating about is false - it's wrong information so I think those are the challenges to be able to do something constructive with it and be able to tell what's right from wrong.</span></p><p>Our social networking is exploding. We can be in contact with so many more people than years ago. In 20 years, you'll probably just have something embedded in you  - a microchip of sorts or some interface and it's just easier to talk to anyone in the world immediately. I think we're all going to be one giant network.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></p><p> <strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In your new book <em>The Upright Thinkers</em> you examine how humans have evolved to where they are today. What drives us as human beings to continue exploring the world around us?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">That, I think, is a fundamental part of our nature. It's a kind of curiosity about where we fit in. What is the world? How does it work and how do we fit in? It's something that you can see in very young infants, and you can see it in all cultures and it's a fundamental quality of being human.</span></p><p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Can science and religion - or spirituality, as some would call it, be reconciled?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I think that this dichotomy is something that is fairly recent. First of all, when the brain evolved to have the capacity to ask such questions, to understand abstractions, and to be curious, one of the first things we started doing was asking these spiritual questions. Humans used to live as nomads wandering around and leaving their sick behind to die and leaving the bodies behind, because they couldn't carry them with. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And then the first human settlements in the Agricultural Revolution, where we domesticated plants and animals and started living in one place, was really driven by these spiritual questions and the desire to be near our departed loved ones. And that's where we really started to ask questions about the world around us. In fact, chemistry came from embalming people trying to preserve the bodies, and so science grew out of those spiritual questions. The first scientists were doing science to try to get closer to God.</span></p><p>Robert Boyle - the chemist, Newton - the physicist, Darwin. People misunderstand them. They started making their investigations as a way of understanding God's plan for the world, so that was all part of it until very recently.</p><p> </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Certainly since Darwin, there have been people who have opposed ideas based on religious fundamentalism, but Darwin for instance was able to reconcile. He was a religious man, and he was able to reconcile evolution with religion. He didn't have a problem with that. He just said, 'Well, God put everything on the Earth in a certain habitat with a plan that would evolve and that's what's happening.' He eventually became an atheist - it's when his daughter died at age 10 that he lost his faith in God.</span></p><p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You've explored the concept of randomness in the past. In your opinion, are humans in control of their own destinies or are they puppets in a play, so to speak?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Well, puppets implies that something else is controlling you, and I think it's neither. We certainly have the experience or feeling of controlling our own behavior. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Whether some being with infinite or extreme intelligence or data on the state of our bodies could predict what we are going to do beforehand because it's predetermined by the laws of nature - maybe that's true. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I don't believe in free will, literally. </span></p><p>I believe that the laws of nature govern your actions. On some level, what you're doing is not your choice but it's governed by the state of your body right now. But we have no way of knowing that. It's far too complex. </p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>BI: <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">What are your thoughts on the fact that a lot of people in this country do not believe in evolution?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">They're misguided. I think it's destructive. It's not only evolution - it's people who don't accept or respect science, and make uninformed judgments about a lot of political and medical issues. These are important issues, and I feel it's unfortunate that we have people like that in this country. </span></p><p><strong>BI: <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There are people that argue that climate change is part of the natural cycle, as opposed to it being man-made, what are your thoughts on that?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I think they're totally ignorant. They have no idea how to approach the problem or what the evidence is and probably haven't read the literature and that there are thousands of scientists who have been studying this for years and are experts and devote their lives to it. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">To dismiss them because you happen to have a different opinion as if one could look at the weather report and understand global climate change is arrogant and ignorant. Among climate scientists, a fraction don't accept it, so I think it's been definitively proven using methods of modern science - the same methods that bring us airplanes and GPS systems and lasers and MRI machines that these people all use. If they deny the science the science in that area, they should not trust MRI machines or X-rays and they shouldn't use a cell phone. They don't get vaccinated either, I assume.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p><strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">BI: </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Are there other forms of life out there in the universe?</span></strong></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>LM:</strong> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We have no evidence that there is, and we can't even theoretically say what the chances are, because we found a lot of stars that are like the sun, and a lot of planets that exist in the habitable zone. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">So there's certainly the raw materials for aliens and for intelligent life. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We know that once you have some form of life, like a bacteria, that it can evolve to intelligent life, but we still don't know how to explain the first creation of DNA, RNA, or the macromolecules of basic life - how they came into being. People are getting closer and closer to understanding that, but we don't really know.
