August 26 (ANI): The Department of Telecommunications (<keyword id="20020832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DoT" source="keywords">DoT</keyword>) has been making concerted efforts to restore <keyword id="19897000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-services" source="keywords">telecom services</keyword> in flood-affected <keyword id="19919396" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tripura" source="keywords">Tripura</keyword>. According to the Ministry of <keyword id="19915758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="communication" source="keywords">Communication</keyword>, despite challenges, the combined efforts of telecom service providers (<keyword id="22917153" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TSPs" source="keywords">TSPs</keyword>) such as BSNL, Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone have successfully restored over 94 per cent of the telecom network in the impacted areas. This has been crucial in maintaining vital communication channels for rescue teams, government officials, and the general public. Tripura has experienced severe disruptions following unprecedented heavy rainfall from August 19 to August 23, leading to intense flooding. The floods caused extensive damage to the telecom infrastructure, resulting in widespread service interruptions. To support the affected communities and improve telecom connectivity, significant measures have been implemented by DoT and TSPs to ensure continuous coverage. DoT has been consistently monitoring the situation with its field unit, the North East Licence Service Area (NE-LSA), and TSPs. The DoT LSA unit in Tripura responded swiftly, working closely with the State Administration, State Disaster Management unit, and Telecom Service Providers to rapidly restore the telecom network in a short period. The DoT enforced Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) in Tripura from August 22 to August 27, 2024, based on field reports. All TSPs quickly implemented ICR, allowing customers to access any available TSP's network, regardless of their subscription. In response to requests from state disaster management authorities, TSPs promptly replaced damaged telecom equipment in the affected areas, aiding both the distressed residents and the rescue and disaster management teams on the ground. Additionally, TSPs have taken various other measures to ensure that people remain connected during these critical times. Jio extended the validity of its prepaid plans by four days for all customers in these areas whose plans had recently expired or were set to expire within the next two days. Airtel offered 1.5 GB of free mobile data per day and unlimited calling with a four-day validity to prepaid customers whose plans had expired and were unable to recharge. Furthermore, bill payment dates for all post-paid customers have been extended by 30 days.

Officials said that low lying areas were the worse affected and people were evacuated. The flood situation remains bleak due to teeming rains in the hilly regions of north Tripura that is the source of all the major rivers in the region. The heavy downpour in the hills resulted in a flood in the downstream areas including Agartala, the capital and nearby areas. Schools in many places were closed following the flood. Many portions of the Assam-Agartala National Highway are flooded and disrupted the normal traffic flow. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire services, civil defence and volunteers are jointly working to help the affected regions, officials said. More than 3000 families in the state have been relocated to 17 makeshift rescue camps. India’s Election Commission announced dates for the country’s 17th Lok Sabha elections on March 10. Polling will be in seven phases starting, April 11. The focus this time is on the tribal-base parties in the state. The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) is one the most-prominent and oldest tribal-based party in Tripura. The year 2021 recorded around 80 disaster events that displaced around 4.9 million people, as per a new report by Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) Floods and cyclones, which are influenced by the south-west and north-east monsoon seasons, were the main reasons for disaster displacement. In less than a week, Cyclone Yaas began to form in the Bay of Bengal and made another 2.2 million homeless, primarily in Odisha and West Bengal. Cyclone Yaas accounted for the highest number of displacements in India. Cyclone Gulab prompted another 50,000 evacuations in September in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, as per the data revealed by the report. Homes, shops, and political offices were burnt and more than 11,000 displacements were recorded. 19 out of 36 states and union territories in the country have displaced populations, some of the largest being in Assam, Tripura and Mizoram in the northeast, and Jammu and Kashmir in the northwest, says the report. The North East State of Mizoram shares its borders with Tripura, Assam and Manipur. The state lies adjacent to the neighboring countries Myanmar and Bangladesh. Mizoram was a part of Assam till 1972 when it was carved out separately to be declared first as a union territory and then as an independent state in 1987. The electoral rolls of the state of Mizoram shows up 7,02,170 eligible electors in the state with the figure comprising of 3,46,219 males and 3,55,951 females. There are no registered third gender voters in this state. During 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress candidate C L Ruala won from this constituency. Congress won from here during 2009 elections also. Mizo National Front had this seat for a five year term after the party won from this constituency in 2004. The state of Mizoram has only one Lok Sabha constituency. This is reserved for scheduled tribes. This semi urban parliamentary constituency has a good literacy rate of about 91.58%. The concentration of scheduled tribe population is very high in Mizoram estimated at 94.43%. As per the survey for an average family of five which has two meals a day, the affordability improved by 29% in the last 13 years for a veg thali. For a non-veg thali, it has improved by 18% for the same time period. Affordability is a function of food prices with average salaries. This is owing to the sharp downward trend in the prices of vegetables and dal in contrast to the previous trend of increasing prices. As a result, an average household of five individuals that eats two vegetarian 'thalis' a day, gained around ₹10,887, on average per year, while a non-vegetarian household gained Rs 11,787, on average per year. The survey states that 2015-16 can be considered as a year when there was a shift in the dynamics of 'thali' prices. Many reform measures were introduced since 2014-15 to enhance the productivity of the agricultural sector as well as efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural markets for better and more transparent price discovery. It says that food is not just an end in itself but also an essential ingredient in the growth of human capital and therefore important for national wealth creation. "Zero hunger" has been agreed upon by nations of the world as a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
