"Limit what's behind you. If all else fails, you can also hang a sheet or blanket to create a makeshift backdrop. </p><h2><strong>Use a tripod to keep your shot stable</strong></h2><p>Portrait photographer <a href="https://www.oksanapali.com/">Oksana Pali</a> told Insider that using a tripod for your camera or phone can greatly improve the quality of your photos. </p><p>"I recommend using a tripod to keep your photo stable and level," she said. "Campfire shots are also not recommended, as it's difficult to frame people around a fire, and the smoke and glow affects lighting."</p><p>The photographer added that lit candles and bright lamps should also be moved out of frame to prevent unsightly bright spots or shadows.</p><p>But if you really want to take pictures in front of the lit-up <keyword id="8206" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Christmas">Christmas</keyword> tree, just make sure that the subjects don't stand too close to the lights. </p><h2><strong>Keep group poses natural, and avoid waving</strong></h2><p>Rather than arranging your loved ones in a stiff group pose, aim for ones that feel natural. </p><p>"Hugging, holding hands, and otherwise engaging with one another usually appears natural," Cramer told Insider. "Make sure everyone is looking at the camera and mind all arm and leg positioning." </p><p>You can try posing groups around festive dining tables or capturing semi-posed pictures of people decorating a tree, walking outside, <a href="https://www.insider.com/holiday-gifts-for-less-than-5-dollars-2017-12">or carrying presents.</a> But make sure to avoid distracting movements, like waving.</p><p>"Raising an arm or waving is not only distracting, but it may block another person's face in the photo," she added. </p><h2><strong>Wearing matching colors or patterns can tie the photo together</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="matching pjs christmas family" height="576" width="769" msid="79287025" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>One way to make your photos look cohesive and festive is to coordinate outfits. </p><p>"For example, if one person is wearing red plaid, make sure other family members are also wearing red or a <a href="https://www.insider.com/color-combinations-that-look-good-together-2018-8">complementary color</a>," Cramer said. "Solid colors such as white, red, green, gold, and black are best."</p><p>Additionally, don't be afraid to incorporate textures by wearing a shearling jacket or polar fleece, but avoid metallic or sequined clothing as the shine can be distracting.</p><h2><strong>Make sure the border of the photo has enough space for framing</strong></h2><p>If you're planning on having your holiday photos printed and framed, you need to be mindful of the position of your subjects' heads. </p><p>"Remember to leave enough space above people in the photo," Cramer said. "Otherwise, you won't be able to frame the photo without the frame cutting across the tops of their heads."</p><p>A good rule of thumb is to allow for at least two to three "heads" of space at the top of the photo.</p><h2><strong>Remove distracting background items</strong></h2><p>For a clean, professional-looking photograph, try to keep background items <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-make-your-home-peaceful-interior-designers">to a minimum. </a></p><p>"Be aware of any background items that make the photo appear too busy or as if the background item is part of someone's shoulder," Cramer told Insider. </p><p>Shiny or moving objects, such as chrome fixtures or televisions, should be eliminated from photo backgrounds. "You can also use tasteful props like wooden sleds, ice skates tied together, or ski poles."</p><p>She suggested avoiding overly elaborate props or costumes, such as Santa suits.</p><h2><strong>Opt for self-timer mode instead of your phone's front-facing camera</strong></h2><p>Although it may be tempting to use your <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-history-of-the-cellphone-2018-7">phone's front-facing camera</a> to see what the shot looks like, Pali advised against it. </p><p>"The camera on the back of your phone is far superior and will give you much better quality photos," she said. </p><p>The photographer suggested taking a few test shots with the front-facing camera, and once you're satisfied with the composition, turn the camera around and take the final shot with the better lens.</p><p>Most smartphones and cameras also have timer options, and Pali recommended using the longest setting available.</p><p>"Using the longer timer will allow you more time to get back into the frame of the shot with your family," she told Insider. How to capture professional-quality family photos for the holidays when you can't go to a studio

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Taking a great photo of a total solar eclipse is hard, so I asked a NatGeo photographer for help.</li><li>Babak Tafreshi has been photographing solar eclipses for 30 years. He's seen them on all seven continents.</li></ul><p>Total solar eclipses aren't something you see every day. Monday's eclipse was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-when-are-the-next-solar-eclipses-2017-8">the last one we'll see in the US for another 20 years</a>.</p><p>When they happen, it's natural to want to document them. But getting the perfect shot is challenging. And if you don't take the proper precautions, you can damage your eyes and camera.</p><p>I knew I wanted to take <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-this-astrophotographer-takes-stunning-photos-of-our-solar-system-2019-1">an amazing eclipse photo</a>, but I had no idea what I was doing. I needed some professional guidance. So, I contacted <a target="_blank" href="https://babaktafreshi.com/">Babak Tafreshi</a>, a National Geographic photographer who has been snapping eclipse shots for 30 years.</p><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse 2024." height="3456" width="5184" msid="109146899" hostid="261" sizebytes="45692"></div><p>With Tafreshi's advice, I was able to take over 50 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2">photos of the eclipse</a> using both my iPhone and my DSLR. Here are the four tips he gave me that made these photos possible.</p><h2>Protect yourself and your gear during the eclipse</h2><p>Make sure you protect your lenses. This goes for your eyes and your camera. Unless you're in the window of totality, you have to make sure you're protecting yourself and your equipment from the sun's harsh rays.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/is-the-solar-eclipse-dangerous-2024-4">It's never safe to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection</a>. Before and after totality, you need to wear eclipse glasses to view the eclipse safely.</p><p>Direct sunlight isn't good for your camera or smartphone either. When UV radiation streams directly into your camera lens, it can cause damage.</p><div type="image" title="A handholding a solar filter for iPhone cameras." height="3024" width="4032" msid="109146900" hostid="261" sizebytes="529122"></div><p>To <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-take-photos-of-the-eclipse-2017-8">protect your equipment</a> while photographing the partial eclipse, you need to use an ND filter of at least 10 stops, and preferably 16 stops, Tafreshi said. ND filters are like sunglasses for your camera; they reduce the intensity of light coming into your lens. You can buy a solar filter for your smartphone, too.</p><p>I didn't purchase an ND filter for my DSLR ahead of time, so I only used that camera for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-total-solar-eclipse-chile-argentina-2019-7">photographing totality</a> — when it's safe to photograph the eclipse without one.</p><p>For photos of the partial eclipse, I used my iPhone camera, which I protected with a spare pair of eclipse glasses. I just held the glasses' lens over my iPhone camera lens, et viola!</p><div type="image" title="Partial solar eclipse 2024" height="2268" width="3024" msid="109146901" hostid="261" sizebytes="15636"></div><h2>Keep calm and use a tripod</h2><p>Solar eclipses are exciting, especially during totality when the moon's shadow completely blocks out the sun and plunges you into darkness.</p><p>For some, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">totality is a visceral experience</a>. Your physical reaction to the sudden change in light and temperature can make it difficult to hold a camera steady and focus on getting the right shot, Tafreshi said in an email statement.</p><div type="image" title="A DSLR sits on a tripod with a crowd of people in the background" height="3024" width="4032" msid="109146902" hostid="261" sizebytes="455612"></div><p>"The most challenging aspect [of eclipse photography] for sure is how to control your senses," he wrote. It took me a moment to catch my breath and refocus on the task at hand.</p><p>Any sort of shaking or vibration of your camera will ruin your eclipse shot, Tafreshi explained. This is especially important to remember during totality when you're using higher exposure. If you anticipate shaky hands during the experience, using a tripod is best.</p><p>I used a 50-inch tripod to keep my camera steady while I took totality shots. It did help keep my camera stable, but I didn't have a remote shutter release to prevent movement while I snapped photos. When you zoom in, you can see that my photos of totality are slightly blurry.</p><div type="image" title="Totality 2024" height="896" width="1413" msid="109146903" hostid="261" sizebytes="6270"></div><h2>Use manual camera settings</h2><p>Cellphone cameras worked fine during the eclipse, but those who used a regular old camera may have learned it's best not to rely on automatic settings, Tafreshi said, especially if you're using a DSLR.</p><p>That's because your camera's sensor may get confused by the sudden drop in light in the last moments before totality, Tafreshi said. Even though totality doesn't cause total darkness, "The drop in light is so fast that we feel it is becoming pitch black," he said.</p><p>Your camera's automatic settings aren't able to adjust to this rapid lighting change quickly. Manual settings offer the dexterity you need to transition from photographing the partial eclipse to totality.</p><p>For example, to capture the final moments before totality (when the diamond ring effect appears), you want to use a shutter speed of about 1/1,000 of a second. But as soon as the sun's last rays disappear, you need to switch to a shutter speed of 0.5 to 1 second.</p><div type="image" title="A photo of manual settings on a Canon Rebel T5i" height="2268" width="3024" msid="109146904" hostid="261" sizebytes="400382"></div><p>When shooting totality with my DSLR, I set my ISO to 100, my aperture to f/9, and used exposure bracketing — a setting that allows you to take multiple photos over a range of exposures at one time. It helps make sure that you don't end up with an over or under-exposed image.</p><h2>Get creative</h2><p>"The best photo of the eclipse is not necessarily a clean, sharp, close up of the image," Tafreshi said. "That is what everybody aims for. Find your own signature and creativity in this unique phenomenon."</p><p>He suggested including interesting elements in the foreground, like other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-2024-niagara-region-declares-state-of-emergency-2024-3">eclipse-watchers</a> and their reactions to the event, or a beautiful landscape in the background, like mountains or water.</p><div type="image" title="Silhouetted eclipse watchers stand in front of the Lake Champlain" height="3456" width="5184" msid="109146905" hostid="261" sizebytes="148054"></div><p>When I wasn't shooting totality, I tried to get some shots of the dusky horizon and silhouettes of excited eclipse watchers.</p><p>Jumping between shooting the partial eclipse, totality, the sunset-like horizon, and people definitely challenged my photography skills. But thanks to Tafreshi's advice, I actually managed to get a fairly clear shot of the main event.</p>

Only those in a 70 mile band will see the sun fully blackened out by the moon, but most of us will at least see some of what was once thought of as a <a href="https://sunearthday.nasa.gov/2008/TTT/63_eclipse.php">celestial dragon devouring the sun</a>.</p><p>There are ways you can photograph the "Great American Eclipse" without damaging your camera or phone (or eyes), but if you do it wrong, you could permanently damage your devices.</p><p>Looking at the sun with your naked eye can burn your retinas, even if that star we orbit is almost entirely covered by the moon. That's why you need to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/safety-tips-watching-partial-solar-eclipse-2017-8">wear protective glasses or use some other method</a> to view the eclipse safely. Damage can also can happen to most camera sensors if you point them directly at the sun, especially if your camera has got a powerful lens on it.</p><p>Here's what you need to know to take a safe and high quality shot.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Your smartphone is also a great way to capture photos of your friends watching the eclipse.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>Smartphone photos:</strong></h2><p>Remember - if you are staring at the eclipse with your naked eye, trying to line up the perfect shot, you could damage your vision.</p><p>There's some debate about whether a quick shot of the eclipse could do any harm to your phone's sensor, <a href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/Photographing%20the%20Eclipse%20with%20your%20Smartphone.pdf">according to NASA</a>, though they conclude it's probably fine.</p><p>If you're using an iPhone, you should be okay. According to Apple, it's okay to take a photo using your smartphone without a solar filter on the lens, since there's not enough magnification to let in the amount of light necessary to harm your lens or sensor (it should be essentially the same for other smartphones with comparable cameras). It's a wide angle shot and the sun or moon only will fit in a smallish part of that image.</p><p>That's a great way to take a photo of you and your friends with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-chasing-airplane-experience-2017-8">eclipse</a> in the background. If you are going to try it, adjust your camera so it's not letting in too much light and blowing out your image. You could also put your phone on a tripod and record the scene.</p><p>But you won't be able to capture a full, massive eclipse image like those seen in this article with a wide angle lens you'd find on a phone. Try taking a photo of the moon with your phone - that's about what you'll be able to see during the eclipse. If you want to capture more of a shot, you'll need a telephoto attachment or zoom lens for your camera. The magnification effect will mean you also need a filter to protect your camera's sensor from being burned by the sun.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/archive/SOLAR-ECLIPSE--GF10000338988.html">Beawiharta/Reuters</a></span></p><p class="caption">To capture a shot like this, you'll need a powerful zoom lens and a solar filter.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>DSLR and zoom lens users:</strong></h2><p>If you're taking a photo with a more traditional camera that has any sort of real zoom - even a point and shoot but especially a DSLR - you need some sort of solar filter to protect your lens from damage.</p><p>These can be obtained from your local photography store - it may be too late to find one on Amazon or other online retailers, though you can always check. A filter sheet or #14 welders glass in front of your camera can do the trick as well.</p><p>For specific details about the best settings to use, including recommended ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, there are excellent guides you can check out <a href="http://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/how-to-photograph-a-solar-eclipse.html">Nikon</a>, <a href="http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2017/eclipse.shtml">Canon</a>, and <a href="https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/how-photograph-solar-eclipse">B&amp;H Photo</a>.</p><p>Remember to practice with your gear. You're only going to have a couple minutes to shoot, so you don't want to be fiddling with settings. To really capture the sun in the frame, you're going to need a zoom lens that's probably at least a 300mm lens, and you'll likely want an even more powerful zoom, between 500mm and 1000mm. Your flash is useless, so just keep that turned off.</p><p>Settings vary slightly depending on which moment of the eclipse you are trying to capture, but most experts recommend a low ISO (100 or maybe 200) and a fairly wide aperture. Different shutter speeds should help you capture different moments - for more details, check the guides linked above.</p><p>If you're shooting within the totality band, don't forget to take the solar filter off your lens when the sun is fully covered. At that point, you'll be shooting in dark conditions and will need a tripod to take stable shots. Using a remote trigger for your shutter or a delay will also help you avoid camera shake. Make sure to replace the filter when you start to see beads of light appearing again.</p><p>Beyond that, have fun!
