<ul class="summary-list"><li>A type of holly tree in Brazil that was believed to be extinct was rediscovered after 186 years.</li><li>An organization called Re:wild said it was one of their "top 25 most wanted lost species."</li></ul>A species of small holly tree known as "Ilex sapiiformis," or the Pernambuco holly, has reemerged in Brazil after nearly two centuries, <a href="https://www.rewild.org/press/small-holly-tree-lost-for-186-years-found-in-patch-of-forest-in-brazil" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a conservation organization reported.</a>The discovery, hailed as an "incredible find" by scientists, has sent shockwaves through the conservation community.The tree, which was feared to have gone extinct, was recently found thriving in the city of Igarassu, in the Pernambuco state of northeastern Brazil."It was like finding a long-lost and long-awaited relative that you only know by old portraits," said Milton Groppo, a researcher at the University of São Paulo. The identification of the Pernambuco holly was made possible by the expedition team, who recognized the tree by its distinctive tiny white flowers.The breakthrough came after during a six-day expedition through the region led by Gustavo Martinelli, an ecologist with Navia Biodiversity, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CxX5DiHOfN4/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=f3cfd020-d889-4f1c-a03c-4d4841135f0e&amp;img_index=3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per Re:wild, an environmental conservation organization</a>.Four trees were found in an area that was once dense Atlantic tropical forest but is now mostly urban areas interspersed with sugarcane plantations.By the 1980s, "less than 5% of the southeastern Atlantic Forest remained intact, and what remains is very fragmented," per Re:wild. The species had been lost for 186 years.Re:wild shared their excitement on Instagram, stating, "The Pernambuco Holly is one of our top 25 most wanted lost species." The "Search for Lost Species" initiative, launched by Re:wild in 2017, brought together experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to compile a list of over 2,200 missing species spanning 160 countries.These species, which had disappeared for at least a decade, represent a significant loss to biodiversity. The Pernambuco holly's triumphant return marks the ninth rediscovery among the top 25 most sought-after lost species, breathing new life into conservationists' efforts.

The thoughts expressed are those of the author.</li></ul>The debate around Confederate statues has always puzzled me. Given the fact that most Confederate statues were built in between <a href="https://www.history.com/news/how-the-u-s-got-so-many-confederate-monuments">the 1890s and 1950s</a>, it's pretty clear their purpose was to reinforce Jim Crow and segregation rather than remember our history. Even in their historical contact, they simply celebrate a heritage of white supremacy and commemorate leaders who just <a href="https://psmag.com/education/of-course-the-civil-war-was-about-slavery-26265">really wanted to keep their slaves</a>. But while this debate seems to be the center of our fight over the commemoration of the history of American slavery, the most nefarious example of this racist heritage is the romanticizing of plantations in the south. In order to fully come to grips with our nation's past and undermine the concept of white supremacy, we need to rid ourselves of the soft-focus on plantations.<h2>Symbol of hate</h2>A plantation, in the strict definition is just a large area of land where crops are, well, planted. But in the United States, that word carries a lot of weight with it.On the surface, plantations evoke the blissful charm of the hot summer south. A place where gentlemen and fair ladies courted each other, in front of a backdrop of luscious trees and vegetation. Today, this concept of beauty and times gone by has made plantations cultural hotspot for weddings and events.For example, Boone Hall, a plantation in South Carolina, is a successful wedding venue. The Plantation <a href="http://buzzfeednews.com/article/clarissajanlim/bride-groom-plantation-wedding-slaves-criticism">holds an estimated 130 weddings every year </a>and advertises "The Cotton Dock" as <a href="https://www.boonehallplantation.com/weddings/">a "legendary structure"</a> that has hosted presidents and celebrities. Its unwavering beauty attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, including celebrities like Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, who <a href="https://www.marieclaire.com.au/blake-lively-ryan-reynolds-wedding-plantation-slavery">were married there</a> in 2012. It's also where The Notebook, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, was filmed. Gigantic oak trees line its pathways, seemingly transporting you back to an earlier time.That time? The era of slavery. Boone Hall's prominence in the past, as well as its current success, can be attributed to the slaves who were forced to build it.They picked cotton and <a href="https://www.tompsc.com/292/Boone-Hall-Plantation">built handmade bricks</a> for the local construction industry. According to some accounts, there were <a href="https://south-carolina-plantations.com/charleston/boone-hall.html">over 80 slaves</a> on the plantation, producing as many as 4 million bricks per year. The bricks <a href="https://gettingontravel.com/two-sides-of-history-at-boone-hall-plantation/">that weren't good enough</a> for export were used to make nine tiny cabins where the slaves were forced to live for decades until emancipation. Boone Hall is just one of many similar tourist-attracting plantations.Slavery, and its effect on the country, <a href="https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2018/02/07/how-is-slavery-taught-in-us-schools.html">isn't being taught well in schools these days</a>, but people who are old enough to get married surely know what they're doing when they choose a plantation as their venue. In their minds, the beauty of the plantation outweighs its dark history and the atrocities that occurred there. By avoiding this reality, it makes it easier for white supremacy to operate today, because we can't effectively fight what we ignore.And while many of these plantations have added educational elements about their role in slavery, even arguing that weddings and other events <a href="https://www.postandcourier.com/business/should-charleston-plantations-given-their-role-in-slavery-be-used-for-weddings/article_a8f7992c-1b92-11ea-a60a-237029a984ea.html">help fund those efforts</a>, it's clear that's not the primary purpose.The owner of Boone Hall, Willie McRae, told the Charleston Post-Courier in January that he's "not ashamed" of holding weddings on the property and most of the people at the plantation for events don't care to learn more."Most of the people aren't interested in the history," McRae<a href="https://www.postandcourier.com/business/should-charleston-plantations-given-their-role-in-slavery-be-used-for-weddings/article_a8f7992c-1b92-11ea-a60a-237029a984ea.html"> told the newspaper</a>. "They're more interested in the beauty of the place."Those who admire confederate statues claim that tearing those statues down is somehow erasing the past, but the repurposing of plantations as wedding and party venues is a blatant effort to erase and ignore the past. It's clear that at plantations, people are actively trying to forget the actual history of white supremacy in this country and are thereby contributing to it. Continuing to use plantations as anything other than educational tools is one way to forget the atrocities that happened there.I'm not calling for the destruction of plantations. They could simply operate as museums, potentially funded by taxpayers, similar to how other places of national suffering and tragedy have been made into <a href="https://www.911memorial.org/">landmarks in the US </a>and <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/09/germany-has-no-nazi-memorials/597937/">outside the country</a>.This would even help curb visitations by people who aren't interested in the dark history of plantations. Plantation site reviews often include white visitors who'd rather not hear about the slavery that made that plantation viable. "We didn't come to hear a lecture about how white people treated slaves," wrote <a href="https://twitter.com/sairasameerarao/status/1159193443467481090">one reviewer</a>."There's really nothing good you can say about slavery, but [the tour guide] took it too far," <a href="https://twitter.com/EscoBlades/status/1159490961564753920">wrote another.</a><h2>It's in the name</h2>One way we as a country can responsibly consume this history is by maintaining the exhibits about slavery at these plantations. It's imperative to tell the whole history of the plantation. The New York Times' Nikole Hannah-Jones suggests we refer to them as <a href="https://blog.chicagoideas.com/ideas_etc/5-takeaways-from-the-1619-project-with-nikole-hannah-jones/">"forced labor camps."</a>One way we don't have to consume this history is by naming things "plantations" when they are not in fact plantations. Gated communities across the South <a href="https://www.islandpacket.com/news/business/real-estate-news/article33698430.html">prominently feature</a> the word "plantation" in their names.I'm forced to ask, what kind of community is being promoted when its name is deliberately evoking our country's dark history of slavery? If you do not operate a plantation, why would you want to align yourself with the connotations of that word, if not to attract residents with a certain world view?Some people get the value in more honestly approaching history and not just cribbing it for gain. The band Lady Antebellum <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/11/entertainment/lady-antebellum-name-change/index.html">changed their name</a> to Lady A due to the connotation of the pro-Civil War South. The Dixie Chicks <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice/2020/06/25/883328370/dixie-chicks-change-band-name-to-the-chicks">just became</a> The Chicks for the same reason. Legendary broadcaster Warner Wolf gets it, too. He was arrested last year for <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tomnamako/warner-wolf-plantation-sign-florida-sportscaster-arrested">ripping off the word "plantation"</a> from the welcome sign of his gated community, the Classics Plantation Estates. And he was 81 years old at the time. Much like Mr. Wolf's literal removal of the word plantation, all of these estates and communities should immediately drop the word from their titles. We as a country need to understand gravity of slavery and its effect on the country, which are still being felt to this day. Trying to ignore that legacy by pretending a plantation is just a place for a wedding or cribbing the term for a gated neighborhood are nothing more than blundering attempts to gloss over that history.

Stop getting married at plantations

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Chuck Leavell is the principal keyboardist for The <keyword id="11939753" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="rolling-stones" source="Orion">Rolling Stones</keyword> and has toured since 1982.</li><li>Besides being a <keyword id="12074859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="musician" source="Orion">musician</keyword>, Leavell is also a tree farmer and owns land in Georgia with his wife.</li></ul>By 1982, at the age of 30, I'd already spent half of my life working my way up the ranks of the <keyword id="11898471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="music" source="Orion">music</keyword> industry. Music played an integral part in my life ever since my childhood days when I'd tug on my mother's skirt and beg her to play the piano for me. When I was 13 and saw Ray Charles perform live, I remember walking away thinking out of all the professions in the world, that's what I wanted to be. <h2>I spent my teenage days performing at the local YMCA near my home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama</h2><div type="image" title="Chuck Leavell, photo Allen Farst" height="1997" width="2670" msid="88285338" hostid="261"></div>I joined The Allman Brothers Band in 1972 when I was 20 and played with them for four years until they temporarily disbanded in 1976. After the breakup, I formed the rock/jazz/blues fusion group Sea Level with Allman's drummer Jaimoe. We released five critically acclaimed albums and toured relentlessly. But in 1982, for the first time in a long time, things were beginning to slow down and the phone was ringing less and less. The year before, my wife Rose Lane had inherited Charlane Plantation, a 1,000-acre parcel of land in Dry Branch, Georgia, from her grandmother. Although we intended to keep the land, we didn't know exactly what we were going to do with it. One afternoon, I came home frustrated and began venting about how the phone wasn't ringing and maybe it was time to just forget about music for a while. When I was done ranting, my wife informed me that while I was out, the legendary rock concert promoter Bill Graham, known for his work with The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, had called to see if I'd be interested in auditioning as the principal keyboardist for The Rolling Stones. I've been recording albums and touring all over the world with the band ever since. <h2>People are always surprised by how much downtime there is on <keyword id="11909227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tour" source="Orion">tour</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="Chuck Leavell and his wife of 48 years, Rose Lane Lucy Hewitt Photography." height="975" width="1300" msid="88285340" hostid="261"></div>Before the pandemic, one of the things I loved most was that my wife would often travel with me and we'd have the chance to visit friends all over the world. COVID-19 forced us to be more creative when it came to downtime on the tour since we were in a tight bubble. While I was able to enjoy the occasional meal out in a few cities, I spent most of the time in my hotel room on my computer preparing for our upcoming activities at <a href="https://www.charlane.com/">Charlane</a>, which is now a nature preserve and lodge. I even bought a vintage 1953 Willys M170 Jeep one day while browsing on Facebook. I plan to have it converted into a hunting vehicle with dog boxes and shotgun boxes.I always have a portable full 88-key keyboard with built-in speakers with me so I get practice in. On tour, we always do sound checks the afternoon of a show and often practice certain songs then.In addition to being the band's principal keyboardist, the guys have bestowed upon me the title "musical navigator," which comes from my practice of documenting most everything we do during rehearsals, from keeping set lists to setting the pace for songs through hand signals and conducting. <a href="https://www.insider.com/charlie-watts-rolling-stones-drummer-dead-2021-8">Charlie Watts</a> often relied on my signals, so I grew used to looking across the stage and catching his eye while we played. Charlie and his wife owned a big horse farm in England, so we'd often talk about the outdoors and environmentalism during downtime. We offer horseback trail rides, hunting experiences, and sometimes have children's groups that visit to learn about nature and sustainable forestry. Now that The No Filter tour is over, I'm jumping right into our hunting season. It's no wonder why the versatile product is the most consumed oil in the world, making its way into half of all packaged products, <a href="https://www.worldwildlife.org/industries/palm-oil">according to the World Wildlife Fund</a>.But palm plantations have long drawn the ire of conservationists for the toll they take on the <keyword id="6356826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ENVIRONMENT">environment</keyword>, from deforestation to the millions of tons of greenhouse gases they generate.Recently, palm plantations in Guatemala have come under pressure to prove they're environmentally sustainable, but the official process is costly and can take years. And even if they do achieve sustainability, plantations still often clash with local communities over the rights to land and natural resources.<keyword id="9071581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-insider-weekly">Business Insider Weekly</keyword> visited two palm plantations in Guatemala to see how palm oil has impacted both the villages and companies at the center of the conflict.<h2>In Guatemala, one sustainable palm oil plantation has been accused of polluting a local water source.</h2>The palm oil industry has brought around 28,000 jobs to Guatemala, as well as over $1 billion in investment over the past 20 years,<a href="https://www.grepalma.org/en/development-for-guatemala/"> according to Grepalma</a>, a national association of palm growers.But it has also created tension with local communities. In the village of Sonora, near a palm plantation called Palmas del Ixcán, activists say some locals have to walk about 40 minutes each way for clean drinking water. The activists claim Palmas del Ixcán polluted their local creek after it arrived in the region in 2008."The towns where most of the oil palm companies are, are where the indigenous towns are located," local activist Javier Coc told Business Insider Weekly. "They depend on Mother Earth, water, air. They were left without any place to work the land."Some locals also say the plantation backed down from a promise to provide wells for villagers because of the high costs, something the plantation denies.In a statement to Business Insider Weekly, Grepalma, a countrywide association of palm growers representing Palmas del Ixcán, said the company rents plots in the village of Sonora, but doesn't have any plantations there. Grepalma acknowledged the company carried out a construction project about two years ago that dirtied the water from a local stream, but denied the company ever offered to build wells. The report didn't mention the Sonora community or its creek.According to the report, Palmas del Ixcán responded to this allegation that analyzes and monitors the water, and takes samples twice a year in accordance with local regulations. Chief among them is Palmas del Ixcán's alleged practice of land grabbing. A <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/oxfam-us/www/static/oa4/the-power-of-oil-palm.pdf">2013 Oxfam report</a> found that the plantation used intermediaries, or "coyotes," to pressure small-scale farmers into selling them their land.The plantation exerted pressure on villages by "surrounding properties and blocking their owners' free transit," Oxfam wrote. In some cases, the coyotes paid families just 1,500 quetzals, or $150, for their land — far below the reported market price of 7,000 quetzals, or $900."They sent straw men, with money from the company, that pretended to be farmers, to buy the land," local activist Herber Sandoval told Business Insider Weekly. But its path to sustainability was costly and time-consuming, and strict sustainability guidelines continue to cause it stress.For Las Palmas, the path to sustainability started with an ultimatum. In 2015, its biggest customer, Walmart, said the plantation would need to obtain a sustainability certificate to continue supplying for it. The American retail giant had pledged to use only sustainable palm oil in its private-label products by the end of 2020."That's what the customer wants nowadays," Las Palmas president Oscar Molina told Business Insider Weekly. "They want sustainable products that are not going to harm you and are not going to harm the environment, and that are cost-effective."Las Palmas is smaller than Palmas del Ixcán. But the process of obtaining that certificate — and keeping it — is taking a toll on the business. Molina said he had to research local laws, hire personnel, and work closely with local communities to work toward certification, which the plantation obtained in August 2016."The certification actually opened our eyes and that we need to comply with all the laws. Sometimes you don't even know what laws applied to your company or to (your) industry," he said. "It just takes time, but you can do it."But going sustainable comes with a hefty price tag. Molina says he spends $17,000 every year on audits alone. "Every year we need to be recertified," Molina said. "Every year we get audited, and we actually pay for that audit."About 20% of global palm oil production is certified as sustainable, <a href="https://askrspo.force.com/s/article/How-much-rainforest-has-disappeared-since-the-introduction-of-RSPO">according to RSPO</a>. Many producers find that it's tough to pass those extra costs onto buyers. <a href="https://rspo.org/resources/certification/rspo-principles-criteria-certification">To get certified</a>, companies first have to become members of RSPO. They then submit evidence, like maps and satellite images, that show how their presence has changed the land, whether they've cut down trees or planted too close to streams. The next step is a plan to make up for previous damage and protect the land going forward. Companies pay for a third-party audit, which RSPO uses to finalize the certification. The process can take up to five years in some cases.Las Palmas managed to keep supplying the giant retailer for a couple of years after getting certified. But it didn't last long — the plantation is no longer a Walmart client.Las Palmas' CEO told Business Insider Weekly in an email that Walmart wanted him to drop his prices, but he couldn't sell for less because of the high costs of going sustainable. A Walmart spokesperson said in an email to Business Insider that it was "a business decision" based on a variety of factors like price, quality, and demand."Walmart makes business decisions with suppliers based on a variety of factors such as price, availability, quality, customer demand, and factory audits and sourcing certifications across our global retail markets," the statement read. As for Palmas del Ixcán, it also lost a major client. Mars, the manufacturer known for making Snickers and Milky Way candy bars, dropped the plantation from its <a href="https://gateway.mars.com/m/7d0f510134302490/original/Mars-Palm-Oil-Mill-List-for-USA-Latin-America-Asia-Middle-East-Russia.pdf">list of palm oil providers</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Clive Collins worked as a forester until a fall from a tree left him unable to continue the work.</li><li>While in the hospital, he decided to build a business planting Christmas trees.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Clive Collins, who owns a Christmas-tree farm in the English county of Sussex. It has been edited for length and clarity. I'm very much a country boy. When I was younger I worked producing logs and timber for construction, firewood, and that sort of thing.Being a forester is a very difficult way of making money. You have to be physically very tough and, to make a good living, you have to be incredibly disciplined.Then, in 1990, I broke my back, which left me with paraplegia.I was removing branches and ivy out of a pine tree in my mother's garden when I accidentally cut the rope and fell out. One minute you're in the ambulance, the next minute you can't walk.Looking back, I think I felt upset with having to change everything. It was grief for the life I had before.At forestry school, we used to talk about growing Christmas trees as one way of making money.Growing trees and making an easier living was quite a nice idea. Even when I was in Stoke Mandeville National Spinal Injury Centre after I broke my back, I thought 'I can still do this.'I planted some trees in 1988, and in 1990 I bought my farm. You have to wait around 10 years to see the first crop.I was working selling Amway products. I learned a lot by going to seminars, and they provide you with lots of books to read and tapes to listen to about how to be a successful salesperson.I know I wouldn't have the business I have today if it wasn't for doing that for a few years.In 1995, I went to America to look at Christmas-tree farms. Asheville in North Carolina was quite an eye-opener, seeing how the Americans do things, looking at their shops, and the way they would set out the plantations, the yard. I came back from America with a vision of the way I wanted things to look.I opened the yard for retail sales in 1997. In the first year, we sold 103 trees.That year, Adrian, my mentor and friend, wrote me a business plan. When I need information and advice, I just ring him up and ask him what to do. I follow his advice down to the last letter.He said the secret to a good Christmas-tree grower is marketing. I had a friend help me do some marketing, and then eight years ago at a swimming pool I bumped into Suzi, who's now my PR. We started by doing local TV news and our sales went up 25% that year.I hired a lad who used to come and help me, doing a lot of the jobs I can't do.I remember I was teaching him how to use a netting machine and talk to customers about what they wanted and offering people stands. I suddenly realized he was doing the job better than I was.Now, on and off, about 30 people are involved in the business. On a busy Saturday in November, we'll have 12 or 13 people here. 4 people work here off-season.The yard is around half an acre — there are potted trees and netting machines. The farm is 27 acres.In 2021, we sold 4,300 trees.A high point was opening the shop selling decorations seven years ago. That's given the center of the business a nice warm glow.A low point has been getting stuck on the tractor in a muddy hole somewhere and not being able to get out of it. I have to get someone to give me a pull.It happens about twice a year. It's drained my confidence. You realize there and then that your mobility is compromised.I bought a number of hand-controlled and accessible machines that allowed me access right into the farm.This year, I managed to find a Segway wheelchair that allows me easy access around the yard.I bought it so I wouldn't need to use my adapted Honda sprayer, as it's petrol-driven and not as easy to control. The Segway also sits me up a little bit higher and gives me another 6 inches on my wheelchair, which means I'm not forever looking up at people.When the trees come to the yard for collection, I can get around easily and simply.<div type="image" title="A man in a wheelchair sits in front of a group of fir trees" height="708" width="1280" msid="95856012" hostid="261"></div>I also bought a zero-turn tractor. It's got a similar layout to a wheelchair, only you've got two levers for two rear wheels. I would say it's quite an expense. But it's necessary as I spend about 50% of my time on the Christmas trees. The other 50% is in the office doing the banking and ordering materials.I like to keep the tool inventory up-to-date — this means replacing tractors, brushcutters, hand tools, and other equipment on a regular basis when they show signs of wear and tear. There is nothing more demoralizing than getting to work and finding a machine won't start.We put fertilizer around our trees, prune them to the right shape, which encourages density. We then protect them from spider mites and aphids.When it's winter, we apply herbicides or use residual herbicides between the trees that deactivate chitting weed seed. Come summer, we cut the weeds and mechanically weed later on in the season.We start cutting trees from when they're around 3 to 4 feet high. They need to be a good shape. A 6-foot tree wants to be about 3 ½ feet wide at the bottom. It needs to be green and nice and bushy all the way up.Customers can either come early – before the end of November – and choose a tree in the plantation or choose a tree from the yard.I've always thought the Christmas tree is the biggest present at Christmas. When it came in the house, that was it. That was time to be excited.

To put things into perspective, the first official ‘Indian coffee’ to be available through the brand: Starbucks was introduced in 2013, to celebrate the Tata-Starbucks first anniversary in the market. 
 
Starbucks had created a special India-sourced coffee, called ‘India Estates Blend’, as a tribute but it was sourced, roasted, packaged, and sold only in India. 
 But that was sourced from multiple coffee lots, unlike <keyword id="3694540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="nullore">Nullore</keyword> Estate coffee which was is a 'Microlot coffee'. A Microlot is a small quantity coffee usually to about 40 bags, from a single estate that has been deliberately set aside from other coffee because it has a high 'cupping score which means better quality.

The shade is carefully controlled, which helps the coffee bean mature slowly, allowing it to absorb its environment which gives it the special smell and taste.

The coffee is intensely fragrant and aromatic, with notes of red apple, caramel, citrus, toasted nuts, and milk chocolate. 
This taste and smell is attributed to the flora and fauna that surrounds this 8-hectares estate. 
 
Trees like Ficus, Jackfruit, and Silver Oak surround the coffee plants giving the earthiness to the coffee. 
Block 19 is home to a colony of ‘fruit bats’ and migratory birds which are the main reason behind the coffee’s fruity persona. 
The estate also plays host to the honey bee.
