An ETF is a basket of securities, shares of which are sold on an exchange. <br /><br />Very soon, there will be a third option, as this week the NSE announced that it will offer investors to trade in 50 US stocks through GIFT city, an international financial services centre (IFSC).<br /><br />Now the main question is what tax would be imposed on your profits?<br /><br />It is very simple. There are two types of tax implications — tax on dividends and capital gains tax.<br /><br /><strong>Tax on dividends <br /></strong><br />Similar to Indian stock market, when you invest in the US stock market you might receive dividends from companies. This is income for an investor, which would be taxed at 25%. So if a company announced a dividend of $100, you will receive $75. <br /><br />The tax rate is comparatively lower for Indians compared to other foreign investors investing in the US as there is a tax treaty between the US and India. <br /><br />However, the dividend received in cash or reinvested again will be taxed in India at your applicable tax slab. However, due to the double tax avoidance agreement (DTAA), the tax withheld in the US can be set off against the tax liability in India. <br /><br />Offsetting means balancing the money that you are owed with money that you owe.<br /><br />For example: You have received a $100 dividend from US stocks in FY21, out of which 25% gets taxed by the US tax department on dividend. This means you have a total $75 income. Now, you have to pay tax on a $100 dividend in India and say you come under a 30% tax slab. Now your tax liability in India is for ₹7,400 assuming dollar rate is ₹74. <br /><br />And remember you have already paid 25% tax in the US which is ₹1,850. So now since you have already paid ₹1,850 as tax in the US you can claim that amount and just pay ₹370.<br /><br /><strong>Capital Gains Tax<br /></strong><br />Firstly, capital gain is the profit one earns on stocks. Edtech players in India had already expanded footprints in the global markets pre-COVID-19,” he added. <br /><br />Sydney-based maths learning platform Matific — which has operations across 60 countries — decided to enter India in 2019. <br /><br />Its chief executive Craig Shotland, talking about why Matific decided to expand to India, told Business Insider, “We see India as a key strategic market driven by factors like robust market potential, strong demand for edtech, and government policies like NEP. But most importantly the passion for education and learning, willingness to adopt technology, and strong affinity to gamified educational content makes it a great place to be right now.”<br /><br /><strong>What led to the rise of Indian edtech<br /></strong><br />Tamrakar of PGA Labs told Business Insider, “While these trends [National Education Policy, accessibility to education and teachers, demand in upskilling and remote learning] were already transforming the market pre-COVID-19, the lockdowns did to edtech what demonetisation did to the fintech sector in India [in 2016] – accelerate these decade-long shifts within a year.”<br /><br />Dexter Capital Advisors’ Agrawal noted that the edtech sector was forgotten till 2015 and the issue was whether the companies operating in this segment could scale up. From Byju’s to Eruditus — India now has four edtech unicorns, thanks to a $4 billion fund flowing in since 2020

<ul><li>The government of <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> currently imposes 10% <keyword id="935478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="motor-vehicle-tax">motor vehicle tax</keyword> on four wheelers below ₹10 lakh and 15% on vehicles above the said amount.</li><li>Tamil Nadu accounts for almost 10% of all vehicles registered in India, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.</li><li>A car with a price tag of ₹10 lakh would cost over ₹12.8  by the time you can drive it out of the showroom.</li></ul>The Tamil Nadu government recently released a white paper ⁠— and the state’s Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan echoed the sentiment ⁠— that complained that the tax on motor vehicles in the state had not changed in nearly 15 years. <br /><br />The statement only hints towards one direction, that the government has finally taken notice of the matter that had been lingering around for the past decade and a half. The state — which is also home to the automobile hub of India, Chennai — may also take some action to fix this in the near-future. <br /><br />The small to midsize-car owners and makers of cars ranging upto ₹20 Lakh — may still be able to sail past these potential policy updates. But the risk is much higher for luxury car owners and makers like Mercedes, BMW and any other car maker that sells cars at more than ₹20 lakhs a unit. This could even include the high-end cars from Indian auto giants like Tata Motors and Mahindra.<br /><br />If the Tamil Nadu government decides to act on the white paper, it would make at least one in every 10 cars sold in the country more expensive, at a time when car sales have been slow for over three years.<br /><br />Tamil Nadu is the third largest state in terms of vehicle registration , according to data <a href="https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahan4dashboard/">shared</a> by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. multiple tax slab schemes been a major point of difference when compared to Karnataka and Kerala. <br /><br />The multiple tax slabs have allowed both Kerala and Karnataka government to charge much higher motor vehicle tax rate to customers buying luxury cars above ₹20 lakh. <br /><br />The other interesting bit here is that while Karnataka taxes motor vehicles more, it still ranks right after Tamil Nadu in terms of the number of vehicles registered in the state. This shows that the tax alone may not be the determining factor.<br /><br />As per the data <a href="https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahan4dashboard/">shared</a> by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Karnataka earned ₹49,782 crore and Tamil Nadu earned ₹44,031 crore in the same period. Micromax now helps you compare discounts offered by e-Commerce firms via Scandid, a price comparison startup

<keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> is developing its own operating system as a suite of services and apps which will run across its phones, tablets, televisions and wearables, as it goes up the value chain to differentiate itself from increasing competition. <br /><br /> Spearheaded by former <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> executive <keyword id="70775" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashish-Agrawal">Ashish Agrawal</keyword>, who is the new technology head at Micromax, the OS will be a forked Android - a platform developed on <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>'s open source mobile OS. The first smartphones with the new OS will be available by the end of this financial year and they will be affordably priced, Micromax cofounder <keyword id="144780" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vikas-Jain">Vikas Jain</keyword> told ET. <br /><br />

	"We're excellent with partnerships and we don't want to reinvent the wheel," Jain said, while specifying that the company was not breaking away from Android but was working with the globally dominant Android OS to bring a differentiated experience to consumers across all platforms, including wearables.
<br /><br /> Agrawal said the likes of <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> and Xiaomi, which have their own OS across platforms, are translating what they have done internationally to India. In contrast, Micromax is closer to the Indian consumer and therefore has a better understanding of the local market and insights based on which it will build the customer experience. <br /><br />

	"Our (Indian) use cases are much different from a US or Chinese customer," he said. As hardware is becoming a commodity, Micromax wants to start investing in software to differentiate itself. However, the company did not want to alienate its set of consumers and developers, majority of who are on Android, by building an operating system from the ground up.

	The No 2 handset brand in India, which closed fiscal 2015 with Rs 11,000 crore of revenue, sells about 3 million phones a month, two-thirds of which are smartphones, and has a 16.7% share of smartphones and 14.4% share overall devices in the local market as per Counterpoint Research.
<br /><br /> It is No. 3 in the tablet segment with a 9% share for the quarter ended March 2015, according to Cybermedia Research, trailing <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and Datawind. Jain said Micromax is among the top five players in the Indian television market with an 8% share, selling about 70,000 units a month. Jain said the first 'smart-non-mobile device' from the company stable would hit the retail market by the end of the year. <br /><br />

	Despite its strong performance in the smartphone and other product segments, the company's future growth would have to come from services built on top of its products to ensure customer stickiness and brand loyalty - a difficult feat given Indian users' discerning and value-for-money profile.

	Over past year, Micromax tied up with Cynogen for using its OS on Yu brand of smartphones through a wholly-owned subsidiary. The company has also begun investing in startups that build services which can be integrated into devices - for instance health start up Healthifyme, online travel portal ixigo and US-based consumer cloud provider MiMedia. The services and apps being developed would also extend to the Yu series.

	The forked Android OS is being developed by the company's software team in Bengaluru. About 75 people in design teams acquired from Nokia R&amp;D in Beijing and a second one coming up in Shenzen will support this venture, including in building apps ecosystem and partnerships back home.
