The global smartphone market is likely to witness modest growth in a cautious-looking 2024, as various companies will close this year with a relatively healthier inventory level, providing space to rebuild their stock in preparation for a potential demand resurgence. According to a Canalys report, Regional performance is expected to diverge due to regional conflicts and geopolitical tensions. "Vendors should remain flexible and adaptable in their strategies to seize growth opportunities in specific regions. Additionally, close monitoring of end demand in different regions is needed to strategically optimise resource allocation and avoid disruptions," said Lucas Zhong, research analyst. In the saturated market competition, vendors must continuously enhance their capabilities and focus on profit and product portfolio optimisation, he added. Global <keyword id="886809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-shipments" source="Orion">smartphone shipments</keyword> increased 7.8 per cent (year-over-year) to 289.4 million units in the first quarter of 2024, according to the IDC, reports DPA news agency. "While the industry is not completely out of the woods, as macroeconomic challenges remain in many markets, this marks the third consecutive quarter of shipment growth, a strong indicator that a recovery is well underway," the report mentioned. In the last quarter, Samsung sold 60.1 million smartphones and Apple 50.1 million of its iPhones. That brings the market shares of the two biggest companies to 20.8 per cent and 17.3 per cent. "As expected, smartphone recovery continues to move forward with market optimism slowly building among the top brands," Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, said. "While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter," he said. China's Xiaomi, Transsion and OPPO rounded out the top five companies. "The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed," said Nabila Popal, research director with IDC's Worldwide Tracker team. "Xiaomi is coming back strong from the large declines experienced over the past two years and Transsion is becoming a stable presence in the Top 5 with aggressive growth in international markets," Popal said. "In contrast, while the Top 2 players both saw negative growth in the first quarter, it seems Samsung is in a stronger position overall than they were in recent quarters."

Coming to Samsung, the Korean smartphone maker’s shipments have declined from 262.2 million in 2022 to 226.6 million in 2023, registering a 13.6% decline. With this, the company’s market share has declined from 21.7% in 2022 to 19.4 % in 2023. It’s not just Apple that is eating Samsung’s market share. The smartphone giant is facing tough competition from its Android rivals, including Google, OnePlus and Huawei, among others. “Apple certainly played a part in Samsung's drop in rank, but the overall Android space is diversifying within itself. Apple beats Samsung for the first time since 2010, tops global smartphone shipments

New Delhi, May 9 () Smartphone maker Tecno on Saturday said it has launched an initiative to offer customers the option to book their smartphones online and get the handset delivered by neighbourhood retail stores. Also, the Transsion Group company said it will resume operations at its Noida factory in accordance with the government regulations. The new model will help Tecno's network of 35,000 offline retailers revive their businesses and empower consumers to select the product of their choice from the safety of their homes, a statement said. Consumers can reach out to their preferred retailers via Tecno's website and enter their PIN code details. The microsite with a store locator will assist in mapping the retailer and the contact details, and the device will be delivered to their doorsteps by their nearest retailer, it added. "Tecno's unique initiative will enable its consumers to connect and place order with their preferred retailers as per the zoning guidelines of the government from the comfort of their home," the statement said. All orders will be delivered within 24 hours in compliance of the norms and guidelines prescribed by the government for zones created in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. Consumers will not incur any additional charges, it added. "We are a consumer-centric brand and at the time of crisis, when going out to a physical store is difficult for consumers. We are taking a step towards bringing them closer to our 35,000 retailers," Transsion CEO Arijeet Talapatra said. Tecno's over 370 service centres have already resumed operations and it will restart its Noida factory in the week starting May 11, conforming to the advisory and guidelines of the state governments, the statement said. After 40 days of lockdown, certain business activities like opening of standalone stores and e-commerce delivery of non-essential items have been allowed in green and orange zones (locations with few or no COVID-19 cases) from May 4. With resumption in sales in select locations, companies like Vivo, Xiaomi, Samsung India and Oppo have announced plans to help connect consumers and offline retail stores via digital platforms. Smartphone shipment in the country is expected to decline by 10 per cent in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, even though the January-March quarter saw shipments growing at modest 4 per cent with over 31 million units, according to Counterpoint Research. Xiaomi led the market with 30 per cent share of the smartphone shipments, followed by Vivo (17 per cent), Samsung (16 per cent), Realme (14 per cent) and Oppo (12 per cent) in the first quarter. New Delhi, Dec 15 () Smartphone maker Infinix will soon join peers such as Xiaomi, Motorola and OnePlus by bringing its smart televisions (TVs) to the Indian market in the first half of 2020.
 "We are looking at getting into new segments like smart TVs and expanding smart accessories. While it's still early to talk about product specifications, we expect to bring in smart TVs in the first half of 2020," Infinix India Chief Executive Officer Anish Kapoor told .
 He added that India will be among the first markets, where smart TVs will be introduced.
 "It's important to get the hardware as well as the software right. Work is on in that direction," he noted.
 Infinix, which is part of China's Transsion Group, focusses on the sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone market in India.
 Kapoor said while a number of brands have brought in their smart TVs in the Indian market, there is still scope for a lot of growth.
 A number of smartphone players such as Xiaomi, Samsung, LG, Micromax and Motorola also have smart TVs in their product portfolio.
 Premium smartphone maker OnePlus also joined the bandwagon with two premium smart TV models that are currently available in India only. Recently, Flipkart had launched the Nokia Smart TV in India as well.
 The Indian television market is estimated to be about 12.5 million units annually, in which Samsung, Sony and LG control an estimated three-fourth market share. SR HRS
