At least 38 <keyword id="47725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="passengers">passengers</keyword> were injured after five coaches of the Mangalore-bound express train derailed near Cuddalore district, about 200 kms from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Chennai">Chennai</a>. 
 
According to police and railway officials, the mishap occurred around 2 a.m. when the coaches of Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed at Puvanur in Vriddhachalam. 
 
The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, official said, adding that the train services on the busy route were disrupted for a few hours. 
 
However, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=trains+">trains</a> were later operated on alternative route but they were running late. 
 
The Friday's accident is the third one in about a month. The mishap once again put the spotlight on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=railway+safety">railway safety</a>. 
 
On August 4, more than 35 people died and 25 were injured when two trains derailed in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Madhya+Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</a>. 
 
Five people, including a Karnataka MLA were killed on August 24 when a granite-laden truck rammed into an express train at a level crossing in Andhra Pradesh.

Train accident injures 38 passengers in Chennai

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Stating that steps are being taken on a regular basis to prevent rail accidents, the Economic Survey on Friday said consequential train accidents registered a decline in 2018-19.
 It said number of consequential train accidents decreased to 59 in 2018-19, compared with 73 in the previous year. In 2019-20 (April-October 2019), 41 consequential train accidents took place.
 "Safety is accorded the highest priority by Indian Railways and steps are being undertaken on a continuous basis to prevent accidents and to enhance safety of the passengers," according to the Economic Survey 2019-20 tabled in Parliament.
 The Indian Railways with over 68,000 route-kilometres is the third-largest network in the world under single management.
 During 2018-19, the Indian Railways carried 120 crore tonnes of freight and 840 crore passengers, making it the world's largest passenger carrier and fourth-largest freight carrier.
 Revenue earning freight loading by Indian Railways in 2018-19 was 12,215 lakh tonnes as against 11,596 lakh tonnes during 2017-18, registering a rise of 5.34 per cent.
 Passengers originating stood at 84,390 lakh in 2018-19 as compared to 82,858 lakh in 2017-18, registering an increase of 1.85 per cent in 2018-19 over the previous year.
 Indian Railways cover over 8,700 stations and carry around 230 lakh passengers daily with clientele of varied socio-economic backgrounds.
 Cleanliness is a continuous process and every endeavour is made to keep the stations and coaches in properly maintained and clean condition, the survey said.
 Special cleanliness campaigns under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan were launched by the Indian Railways on October 2, 2014.
 "Regular intensive campaigns/drives have been organised since then by the Indian Railways with the sole objective to achieve significant and sustainable improvements in cleanliness standards," it said.
 Modernisation or upgradation of railway stations in Indian Railways is a continuous process, the Survey said adding that 1,253 stations have been identified for development under Adarsh Station Scheme and are planned to be developed by 2019-20.
 A dedicated special purpose vehicle, Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) Ltd, has been set up to carry out modernisation of railway stations.
 IRSDC is working on modernisation of many stations on the public-private partnership mode. SID HRS

Three days later, Tipping was taken off life support after having trouble breathing on his own."He was supposed to be in training, but he was brutally injured instead," Bradley Gage, the lawyer representing Huffman, said in a statement provided to Insider. There were conflicting reports about what happened. According to one account, a 60-millimeter mortar shell exploded in a tube as Marines were preparing to fire it. Another account said that the shell exploded as Marines were picking it up to load it.
It's possible that a misfire occurred and the Marines were attempting to clear a round. When a round does not fire, the routine is to back away from the gun to a safe distance. After about a minute, Marines slowly approach the gun and cautiously lift the barrel while another "catches" the round as it comes out of the tube.

Seven Marines Killed In Tragic Training Accident In Nevada

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>There have been <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/19/us-canada-railways-volatility-idUSKBN0MF2VC20150319">several</a> <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/06/us-oil-train-derailment-bnsfrailway-idUSKBN0M21AT20150306">high-profile</a> <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/19/usa-train-derailment-bakken-idUKL1N0VS1LR20150219">oil-by-rail</a> accidents in the last couple of months.Should we be worried about shipping crude oil by rail? The short answer is yes.The longer answer is that it's complicated. And this mode of transporting oil isn't going away anytime soon.<h3>The rate of accidents has actually declined</h3>Transporting crude oil involves a lot of different interests. On one hand, there's a lot of money involved. Oil is a huge part of the national economy, and it needs to get from its source, largely in the Midwestern and Southern US, to refineries on the East and West coasts. Pipelines can't transport it all, and rail is the next best option.Even as use of rail is increasing, the rate of of accidents nationwide have actually been going down. This chart, from Reuters' analyst John Kemp, shows that train accidents have been declining pretty steadily since 2004:<div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"></div></div>On the other hand, even a 0.001% failure rate is a big deal. Rail cars carrying crude oil have a tendency to explode in flames when they derail. And the number of rail cars carrying crude has boomed in the last six years. Almost 500,000 carloads of crude oil were transported by rail in 2014, up from 9,500 in 2008. It now accounts for "1.6% of total carloads for U.S. railroads," according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).<h3>Rail tankers carrying crude go through cities and along rivers</h3>Railroad infrastructure was built to connect cities. And because they connect people, they go through heavily populated areas rather than around them.Railroads also often wind along rivers, because that's where it's easiest to build. When a train derailed in Illinois earlier this month, hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude <a href="http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2015/03/07/259010/epa-illinois-oil-train-derailment.html">threatened the Mississippi River</a>. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Ed Greenberg, a spokesperson for the AAR told Business Insider, "no accident big or small is acceptable, anytime there is an incident the industry takes steps to learn from it to prevent it from happening." The AAR will spend $29 billion to upgrade rail infrastructure in 2015, and it has reduced maximum speeds for crude-carrying trains to 40 mph through high-threat urban areas.<h3>The safety standards could improve</h3>But an op-ed in the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/12/opinion/dangerous-trains-aging-rails.html">New York Times</a> by Marcus Stern questioned the safety of the railroad infrastructure after the Illinois derailment:...The only significant government intrusion into the railroads' self-regulation of the nation's 70,000 to 100,000 railroad bridges is a requirement that the companies inspect them each year. But the Federal Railroad Administration, which employed only 76 track inspectors as of last year, does not routinely review the inspection reports and allows each railroad to decide for itself whether or not to make repairs.Crude oil wasn't even considered a hazardous material until a few years ago, according to David Willauer, who is the chair of the Subcommittee on Crude Oil <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> at the Transportation Research Board and the transportation manager at IEM, a global security consulting firm. But because of the huge increase in the volume being transported, it now presents a problem for railroads. (The same can be said for ethanol - also newly produced and transported in large quantities, as well as highly flammable - by the way.)<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h3>Shale crude oil is more combustible</h3>And the crude coming from the shale basins, a big part of American production, is typically lighter, with more butane gas in it than other kinds of oil, which makes it more flammable. When a train derails, it creates a ton of heat. If the steel outer shell of the car gets punctured, it's likely to be hot enough to start a fire, which causes the whole care to explode. The heat from that explosion causes the surrounding cars to warp and tear, leaking oil, which catches on fire, creating more explosions. Pretty soon you've got multiple cars exploding and a giant oil or ethanol fire."The kinds of fires we've been seeing have just been monumental," says Willauer. And that is the big problem. Fighting an oil fire isn't the same as fighting a house fire.He says that the biggest concern for the TRB's crude oil subcommittee right now is getting information out there to emergency responders around the country about what to do if one of these fires happens in their response area.The biggest crude-by-rail disaster in recent memory was at Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, where 47 people died in 2013. The largest source of casualties, Willauer explained, <a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013/07/12/lac_megantic_where_they_died.html">was at a bar</a> near where the train derailed."People came out to watch the fired," he explained, and first responders "didn't get people out in time." LUCKNOW: Around 30 people are feared dead and 50 have been injured as Gorakhpur-bound Gorakhdham Express rammed into a goods <keyword id="41341" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="train">train</keyword> at Chureb station between Basti and Gorakhpur on Monday morning.

As per initial reports, both the trains came on the single track due to signal error. Three general coaches of Gorakhdham Express were badly crushed while six others were derailed. 
 
Locals were the first to rush for rescue operations. The district administration said that 30 people had died in the accident. However, railway officials did not confirm the number of dead and injured. 
 
"People are saying this based on their own assessment. There are lot of people inside the coaches who need to be rescued first," said CPRO, Ner, Alok Kumar Singh. 
 Meanwhile, PM-designate <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the train tragedy. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en">
