<ul><li>Viewers now have until March 31 to choose the channels they want to buy.</li><li>The new rules for cable television had come into effect on February 1.</li><li>Deadline has been extended following complaints of higher cost to consumers and missing channels. </li></ul> The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the time for selection of channels for viewers under the new subscription model for cable television. According to an ET NOW newsflash, customers now have until <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/trai">March 31</a> to pick the channels they want to pay for. The new norms that kicked in from February 1 intended to give the viewers to pay only for the channels they want to watch, and the regulator hoped that this would bring the cost down for the consumers. However, there were unintended consequences.Viewers have complained of multiple discrepancies ranging from missing channels to hiked prices. Earlier in January, the TRAI chairman RS Sharma had clearly <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/deadline-for-new-tariff-regime-wont-be-extended-trai-chief/67728890">stated </a>that the deadline won’t be extended for cable TV operators and that instead, operators should reach out to consumers to ensure the latter adapt to it. A <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/technology/social/trai-new-cable-dth-rules-tv-bills-will-go-up-for-most-users-says-crisil-report-5570011/">CRISIL </a>report too pointed out that the new pricing model will lead to higher prices, which was rubbished by the regulator. Following a flood of complaints from users on social media, TRAI had directed channels to address the issues immediately while also sending a show-cause notice to Airtel after consumers complained of a blackout. Indian TV viewers get more time to pick the channels they want to watch

New Delhi, Dec 26 () The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Thursday extended by nearly a month to January 23 the timeline for stakeholders to submit their comments on the issue of 'transparency in publishing of tariff offers'.
 The deadline was extended as "stakeholders have sought extension of time for sending their comments on the Consultation Paper", TRAI said. 
 The consultation paper on "Transparency in Publishing of Tariff Offers" was issued on November 27, 2019. The original deadline for receiving written comments from the stakeholders was December 26, 2019 and counter comments by January 9, 2020.
Citing industry request for extension in timelines, TRAI said "it has been decided to extend the last date for submission of written comments up to 23 January 2020 and counter comments by 6 February 2020". 
No further request for extension would be entertained, TRAI said in a statement.
Last month, telecom regulator had invited public views on enhancing transparency in disclosure of phone services rates and mooted an idea of introducing tariff calculator to help customers find the best plans to suit their usage.
Trai sought views on higher transparency in details of unlimited data plans, where promised speed is provided only up to a certain level of usage and information is concealed in service thereafter.
"The transparency in communication is not only relevant to ensure that consumers benefit from the access to critical information regarding the product/service but also to maintain and increase the competition intensity, vital for growth and development of the sector," Trai had said in its recent consultation paper on transparency in publishing of tariff offers.
The move came after Trai received a significant number of complaints from individual consumers on lack of transparency in disclosure of tariff information. MBI MR

That is the direction in which we are going. We will have designed in India telecom software for running the networks, manufactured in India telecom equipment, served in India telecom networks which can go global,” Vaishnaw said. As per Vasihnaw, 6G technology in the country will be rolled out using indigenously developed hardware and software. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly started the consultation process for 5G and this is expected to be completed by February or March 2022. TRAI has granted an extension to the telcos for 5G trials and the deadline has been shifted to March 31, 2022. During the webinar, Vaishnaw also spoke about the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/telecom-relief-package-airtel-vodafone-idea-get-four-year-moratorium-on-agr-dues/articleshow/86227218.cms">telecom reforms</a> that were announced by the government in September. The major part of the reforms includes the four-year moratorium for adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.
