In <keyword id="19895037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru" source="keywords">Bengaluru</keyword>, the traffic police have gone tech-savvy, and they're now leveraging AI to keep an eye on you – whether or not there’s an officer standing by.<br /><h2>Bengaluru’s AI revolution in <keyword id="22205047" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-enforcement" source="keywords">traffic enforcement</keyword></h2>Bengaluru, the tech hub of India, has pioneered the use of AI-based enforcement in its bustling streets. "At present, we use AI-based cameras to enforce seven violations," said MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru City Traffic) in an interview with <em>Moneycontrol</em>. These violations include overspeeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, riding without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, red-light jumping, and stop-line violations. But it doesn't stop there!<br /><br />The city is expanding this AI-driven system to detect 13 different <keyword id="19948114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-violations" source="keywords">traffic violations</keyword> — up from the existing seven. Among the new additions are wrong-side driving, illegal number plates, overloaded goods vehicles, broken or folded door mirrors, and illegal parking. "We will soon expand to cover 13 types of violations," Anucheth added, hinting at an even more stringent road regime.<br /><h2>Eyes in the sky</h2>With a road network stretching over 14,000 km, more than 12 million registered vehicles, and around 40,000 traffic intersections, Bengaluru’s streets can get chaotic. To tackle this, Bengaluru’s AI system is leaving nothing to chance. The AI can do more than just catch rule-breakers; it can even detect waterlogged areas, cattle on the road, potholes, and unattended objects, ensuring smoother traffic flow.<br /><br />What’s more, these AI-based systems are equipped with <keyword id="22598445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Automatic-Number-Plate-Recognition" source="keywords">Automatic Number Plate Recognition</keyword> (ANPR) and can process video feeds from multiple sources, including surveillance cameras, body-worn cameras, and even social media feeds. So, even if you're accidentally caught on a neighbour’s camera violating a traffic rule, you could still be fined.<br /><br />“Instead of procuring additional cameras, we decided to obtain AI-based automatic violation detection licences to utilise our existing infrastructure for traffic enforcement and management," Anucheth explained. That means the city is becoming smarter without splurging on extra gadgets.<br /><h2>Expect more fines</h2>In 2023 alone, <keyword id="21352185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru-traffic" source="keywords">Bengaluru Traffic</keyword> Police booked nearly 90 lakh cases and collected a record Rs 185.1 crore in fines. With the expanded AI system, these numbers are expected to soar even higher. Commuters along major arterial roads such as the Electronics City Elevated Expressway, Mysuru Road to Goraguntepalya, and Bellary Road should be particularly mindful. "No violation can escape the hawk eyes of our powerful cameras," said Karnataka’s Additional Director General of Police, Alok Kumar, after catching a bus driver talking on his phone while driving.<br /><h2>Management, not just enforcement</h2>But Bengaluru’s AI isn’t just catching violators — it’s also helping ease the flow of traffic in a majorly congested city. AI is playing a crucial role in optimising <keyword id="21296378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-signals" source="keywords">traffic signals</keyword> to reduce congestion and manage traffic patterns. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A Tesla Cybertruck owner went viral for polishing his vehicle to have a mirrorlike finish.</li><li>Some social media users raised concerns that the customization presents road safety hazards.</li></ul><p>Having a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/polished-cybertruck-stainless-steel-2024-6">Cybertruck with a mirrored body</a> may not be the safest idea, but it's not illegal, highway safety experts and a traffic court attorney told Business Insider.</p><p>In May, Tyson Garvin went viral on social media for polishing his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-review-annoying-features-windshield-wheel-covers-safety-2024-4">Tesla Cybertruck</a> to have a mirrorlike exterior.</p><p>Garvin told BI that he felt the polishing job was not only an aesthetic improvement but also a practical upgrade. He said the new look helped with the common issue of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-upkeep-barkeepers-friend-tesla-fanatics-2024-3">fingerprint stains</a> on the vehicle's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-steel-body-panel-gaps-production-issue-report-2023-11">stainless steel exterior</a>.</p><h2 id="238f9912-7758-4298-af52-8a8cab620e4d">But is it safe?</h2><p>Social media users reacting to Garvin's customization raised concerns that the car could be a road safety hazard if the truck's exterior reflected headlights back at drivers — and if the vehicle blends in with its environment<strong> </strong>on the road as well as it appears to in photos.</p><div type="image" title="Cybertruck" height="1280" width="960" msid="110822401" hostid="261" sizebytes="224992"></div><p>Garvin told BI he had similar concerns about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-drivers-have-a-blinding-headlight-problem-2023-2">drivers' headlights</a> bouncing off the truck's tailgate when driving at night. He said a road test he conducted with his wife showed that the tailgate only reflected the road because it is slightly slanted downward.</p><p>Experts told BI there isn't much literature on whether reflective exteriors present higher risks.</p><p>"Reflective glare may pose the same problem for other drivers as headlight glare, but I am not aware of any research documenting whether this leads to or is associated with increased crash risk," David Zuby, chief research officer for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, told BI in an email.</p><p>Johnathon Ehsani, a research director at Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, told BI he wasn't aware of studies that revealed the impacts of a vehicle's exterior color.</p><p>However, Ehsani added that there are two possible "mechanisms" that could make a reflective Cybertruck a road risk.</p><p>The first regarded concerns raised online: It's certainly possible that reflected glare from the vehicle can temporarily blind other drivers, Ehsani said, cautioning that he would have to see the vehicle in person<strong> </strong>to make a more certain conclusion.</p><p>Garvin told BI that the Cybertruck's shape causes sunlight to reflect onto the ground rather than towards other drivers.</p><div type="image" title="Cybertruck" height="1600" width="1002" msid="110822403" hostid="261" sizebytes="305798"></div><p>The far more plausible scenario for road risks is not unique to the reflective Cybertruck, Ehsani said.</p><p>"The far more plausible case is a crash mechanism that is far more common, that people crash from every single day," he said," and that's that it might attract attention because it's such an unusual-looking vehicle."</p><p>Ehsani co-authored a 2013 study published in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jahonline.org/article/S1054-139X(13)00779-9/fulltext">Journal of Adolescent Health</a> that documented the impact of a distracted driver. His research found that drivers are 3.8 times more likely to crash if they divert their attention from the road for more than two seconds.</p><p>This issue, of course, is not limited to exotic or highly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/20-million-dollar-exotic-car-hamilton-collection-2022-4">unusual vehicles</a>, Ehsani said.</p><p>"It's not that different to, for example, looking at a billboard for longer than you need to or even messing around with your entertainment console," he said.</p><h2 id="c44427f3-b977-4c5a-a62c-b7f94af90931">'Asking to be pulled over'</h2><p>A polished Cybertruck may attract some legal burdens even if there are no laws regarding <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yiannimize-celebrity-car-customizer-car-wrapping-2019-2">customizing a vehicle's exterior color</a>.</p><p>Martin A. Kron, a longtime New York traffic court attorney and former judge, told BI in an interview that he's never dealt with a legal issue for a car's paint job in his 38 years of practice.</p><p>But having a car with an outlandish color attracts the attention of everyone — including police officers, he said.</p><p>"Although there may not be a spelled out legal prohibition against it, in the real world, if you're driving a customized car, you're asking to be pulled over," Kron said, adding that officers could pull the driver over and sniff out other reasons to give a ticket.</p><p>Zuby, the chief research officer for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, told BI that the car's paint job also likely has no impact on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-long-does-a-car-accident-affect-my-insurance-rates">insurance rates</a>.</p><p>He said that insurers are mostly restricted to using past experiences rather than "predictive assessments" to set rates.</p><p>"So, unless an insurer had somehow documented that shinier vehicles had higher losses than less shiny ones, it would be unlikely to affect premiums paid," Zubu said. "Plus, it's unclear how an insurer would know that an insured made the vehicle shiny after purchase."</p><p>That is unless your vehicle is featured in a global publication, of course.</p>

Polishing a Cybertruck might not be the safest idea, but it's not illegal, traffic experts say

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A British Airways flight had to be evacuated when a bomb threat was emailed to Bermuda Airport.</li><li>An audio recording shows the pilot repeatedly requesting emergency services and stairways.</li></ul><p>A bomb threat moments before takeoff saw nearly 200 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-airways-flight-circled-air-singapore-heathrow-burn-fuel-fault-2024-4">British Airways</a> passengers evacuated onto the tarmac at an airport on the Atlantic island of Bermuda. </p><p>According to a recording of communications between the pilots and controllers, the Boeing 777 had been cleared to take off to London when an urgent message came from air traffic control.</p><p>"Speedbird 18B cancel takeoff clearance, cancel takeoff clearance," the controller said. "We have received some information regarding a bomb threat."</p><p>The controller said the airport duty office received an email saying there was a bomb on board the plane, which was carrying 197 people.</p><p>They then told the pilots to stay on the runway, as they figured out how to deal with the threat.</p><p>The pilot is heard staying calm as he requests "full emergency services" but repeatedly asks for updates on the evacuation.</p><p>"It's 40 minutes now since you gave us the bomb threat. We really should have fire engines surrounding the aircraft," he said.</p><p>As the plane waited for the airport to bring stairs, the pilot said: "If they take much longer, we will be using the slides."</p><p>Eventually, the stairs did arrive, and the passengers were evacuated. Videos shared on social media show dozens of people standing on the tarmac.</p><p>It isn't clear if the bomb threat was legitimate or a hoax, but the 777 involved in the incident — tail number G-VIIN — has flown twice since, flying from Bermuda to London on Monday and from London to Nassau in the Bahamas on Tuesday.</p><p>Bermuda L. F. Wade International Airport told Business Insider in a statement that the incident is still being investigated.</p><p>"Flight operations at L.F. Wade International Airport continue as scheduled while the Bermuda Police Service and local and international aviation security officials continue to investigate the incident," the statement read.</p><p>"Airport authorities regret the inconvenience caused to passengers affected by this incident. The safety and security of all passengers, personnel, and airport users remains the highest priority."</p><p>In a statement shared with Business Insider, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-british-airways-9-billion-transformation-with-new-seats-2024-3">British Airways</a> spokesperson said: "The safety of our customers and colleagues is always our highest priority and we followed our standard procedures to disembark the aircraft."</p><p>"Our teams are caring for our customers and supporting crew as we work to get them on their way as soon as possible," they added.</p>
