As Mumbai, India's financial capital, witnessed vertical growth over the years with highrises dotting its skyline, some 'gaothans' (villages) have held onto their heritage and legacy. Ranwar, in the heart of Bandra, is one such village that has resisted the urge to make way for towering structures. Dwarfed by highrises, the East Indian-majority village has narrow streets lined with old quaint bungalows and crosses outside homes. With jazz music streaming in the air, walking around the area can transport you to a simpler time. While Bandra developed rapidly and became home to Bollywood's elite and a burgeoning street shopping hub, residents of Ranwar maintained their old bungalows. The coexistence, however, has come at a price, causing traffic issues and crowding. And now, plans are afoot to give the 300-year-old village a facelift while preserving the past. Talking to PTI, <keyword id="23283968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Johan-Dharmai" source="Orion">Johan Dharmai</keyword>, BJP secretary and a member of the East Indian community, said, "Locals want to preserve the heritage. One of the steps in the facelift plan is to close vehicle movement and build a walkway so that tourists can take a stroll and enjoy the architecture." Though many houses in Ranwar are now being redeveloped, Veronica Street has maintained its old-world charm. It has a square erected in 1866. However, honking rents the air on this street, as motorists see it as a shortcut to Bandra Reclamation and other areas. Mehboob Studio is just a stone's throw away, and senior citizens living on Veronica Street recall seeing actors Helen and Zeenat Aman around Ranwar. A beautification, restoration and conservation project is being initiated to improve safety, regulate traffic and create awareness about the centuries-old village. Mumbai BJP president and <keyword id="20238930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-West" source="keywords">Bandra West</keyword> MLA Ashish Shelar recently met locals to discuss ways to move the project forward. "The beauty of Bandra West is its 'gaothans'. The heritage needs to be protected and showcased. I have asked the government to allocate funds from the District Planning Development Committee (DPDC). <keyword id="23283965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranwar-Village" source="keywords">Ranwar village</keyword> will get a facelift. The work has begun on roads, CCTV cameras, street light illumination, parking and traffic plan will be in place with the help of locals and architects," Shelar told PTI. <keyword id="23283967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Architect-Samir-DMonte" source="keywords">Architect Samir D'Monte</keyword> has been working with the Ranwar Veronica Street Residents' Association since 2009, and they identified a range of problems that the area faced. D'Monte said improvements were made to open spaces and common areas, roads, sewage and drainage systems, street signage, street lighting and traffic and parking management. Apart from this, individual houses were restored, and an innovative fire system was also introduced. Locals say most residents are senior citizens and want to live peacefully without disturbances by motorists. Kaevan Umrigar of Khaki Tours, who works to create awareness about Mumbai's heritage, said Bandra comprised 23 gaothans that housed fisher folk, Kunbis (a farming community) and the agris community who had salt pans. "Ranwar was a farming village, and the area had paddy fields. Later, these paddy fields made way for urban settlements. These little villages are now trapped in the city. Now, only 10 to 15 gaothans in Bandra have survived," he said. But preserving heritage comes at a cost, and if a 'gaothan' comes under heritage guidelines, it becomes difficult to upgrade a home in the area or live a modern life, Umigar said, adding that heritage should be made attractive by tapping the tourism potential of these areas. 'Gaothans' in Mumbai and the larger Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) are urban villages that house the city's original inhabitants. The Mumbai suburban district collector and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been roped in for Ranwar's facelift plan. Umigar calls land scarcity a threat to 'gaothans', with only 100 left in the city. "When someone wants to develop gaothans, they want to do it vertically. There is a constant battle between heritage and development. They (villages) survive because the houses are tightly packed and on narrow lanes. So individual houses are not attractive for redevelopment, and parking becomes an issue," he said.

Google Maps and Waze suspend live traffic updates in Israel and Gaza in effort that could help prevent live-tracking troop movements

The revised <keyword id="20777683" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="civil-aviation-requirements" source="keywords">Civil Aviation Requirements</keyword> (<keyword id="19993399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="car" source="keywords">CAR</keyword>) in this regard will come into force after three months, the <keyword id="19926254" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="directorate-general-of-civil-aviation" source="keywords">Directorate General of Civil Aviation</keyword> (DGCA) said in a release on Thursday. Currently, the breath analyser test percentage required is 10 per cent and that has been increased to 25 per cent. It will be applicable for air traffic controllers, ground staff, aircraft maintenance engineers, and ground handling services personnel right. According to the regulator, revisions have been made to the CAR on the procedure for breath analyser examination of the personnel engaged in safety-sensitive work such as aircraft maintenance, air traffic control services, aerodrome operations, and ground handling services for detecting the consumption of alcohol. DGCA said the revision in the CAR will further enhance the level of safety and is an effective step in view of the increase in air traffic and ground movements at airports. The amended norms will be effective after three months from the date of issue in order to provide adequate time to the industry to suitably enhance the existing infrastructure for breath analyser tests at various locations, it added.

As per official data, the total number of domestic passengers was 4,63,417 and the number of flight movements stood at 5,998 on Thursday (November 23). In a post on X, civil aviation minister <keyword id="29632" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="Orion">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> on Friday said a new record has been set in Indian domestic aviation. Domestic air traffic had touched new peaks for three consecutive days -- November 18, 19 and 20.

New Delhi, <keyword id="175577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="commercial-pilot-license" source="Orion">Commercial pilot license</keyword>s will now be valid for ten years, with the government amending rules as part of efforts to further improve ease of doing business in the aviation sector. Till now, the validity of Commercial Pilot License (CPL) was for five years and after completion of that period, it had to be renewed. The civil aviation ministry amended the Aircraft Rules, 1937. Among various changes made, the validity of licenses in relation to Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) and CPL holders has been increased from five years to ten years. "This change is expected to reduce administrative burden on pilots and aviation authorities like DGCA, promoting a more streamlined and efficient licensing process," the ministry said in a statement on Monday. Besides, rules have been amended to address concerns related to the display of lights in the vicinity of an aerodrome. It has also been clarified that the term 'light' encompasses lantern lights, wish kites, and laser lights. Also, the government's jurisdiction over those exhibiting such lights has been extended from 5 kilometres to 5 nautical miles around an aerodrome. "It is made explicit that the government possesses the authority to take action against individuals displaying lights that disrupt the safe operation of aircraft or pose hazards to the operating crew. "Should such lights remain unattended for 24 hours, the government is empowered to enter the location and extinguish them," the ministry said. Simultaneously, the matter should be reported to the relevant police station for legal action under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). When the source of the observed light is unidentifiable or if it shifts locations, the airport or airline operator is obligated to promptly report the incident to the local police station, initiating potential criminal proceedings. Another amendment is that the requirement for validation of foreign licenses has been removed. "This change signifies aligning the regulations with the evolving needs of the aviation sector," the ministry said. Further, the requirements related to continued competence for <keyword id="6414849" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-traffic-controller" source="Orion">Air Traffic Controller</keyword> (ATC) license holders have been liberalised. According to the ministry, this change offers increased flexibility to accommodate situations with limited movements or watch hours. ATC license holders must complete a minimum of ten hours of simulated exercises, including emergencies. Subsequently, they must undergo a skill assessment for their respective rating within ten consecutive days of commencing these exercises, it said. The ministry said the amendments to the Aircraft Rules, 1937, notified on October 10, mark a crucial shift in promoting ease of doing business and ensuring safety and security within the aviation sector. India is one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. Airlines are expanding their aircraft fleet and will be hiring more pilots to cater to rising air traffic demand.

Govt amends aircraft rules; commercial pilot licenses to be valid for 10 years

Mumbai, The domestic air passenger traffic is expected to surpass the pre-Covid levels of 141.2 million and reach 150-155 million this fiscal, registering an estimated growth of 8-13 per cent, credit ratings agency <keyword id="19908266" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="icra" source="keywords">Icra</keyword> said on Wednesday. Icra also projected a significant reduction in industry's net loss for the next two fiscals and was also of the view that supply-chain challenges and engine failure issues may remain near-term headwinds. Icra maintains a "stable" outlook on the domestic aviation industry, amidst the continued recovery in domestic and international air passenger traffic, and relatively stable cost environment, it said. The momentum in traffic growth is expected to continue in FY2025 as well, with a similar estimated year-on-year growth, aided by rising demand for both leisure and business travel and improving airport infrastructure, it said. The international passenger traffic for Indian carriers surpassed the pre-Covid levels in FY2023, although it trailed the peak levels of 25.9 million witnessed in FY2019, according to Icra. It is expected to cross this level in the current fiscal, with an estimated 25-27 million passengers, representing a <keyword id="19921444" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yoy" source="keywords">YoY</keyword> growth of 7-12 per cent, the ratings agency said, adding the same is expected to further grow by 7-12 per cent to 27-29 million in FY2025. "The industry has witnessed improved pricing power, as reflected in increase in yields and thus the spread between revenue per available seat <keyword id="20544428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kilometre" source="keywords">kilometre</keyword>-cost per available seat kilometre (RASK-CASK) for the airlines. "The same is expected to remain favourable, aided by a decline in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and the relatively stable foreign exchange rates," said <keyword id="20849526" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suprio-banerjee" source="keywords">Suprio Banerjee</keyword>, Vice President and <keyword id="20225498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sector-head" source="keywords">Sector Head</keyword> for corporate ratings at Icra. The industry is thus estimated to report a significantly lower net loss of Rs 300-4,000 crore (Rs 30-40 billion) in FY2024 and FY2025 compared to Rs 170-175 billion in FY2023, he added. According to the ratings agency, the ATF prices and indian rupee-US dollar movement have a major bearing on the airlines' cost structure. The average ATF price stood at Rs 103,547/KL in the April-February period of FY2024, which is a YoY decline of 15 per cent compared to Rs 120,978/KL in FY2023, it said. However, this was 60 per cent higher compared to an average of Rs 64,715/KL during FY2020, as per Icra. Fuel accounts for around 30-40 per cent of the airlines' expenses.

While a pedestrian who's hit by a car traveling at 20 mph has a 93% rate of survival, the survival rate drops to 80% when the vehicle is going 30 mph. Both death and injury rates continue to rise as speeds climb above 30 mph.The city has also installed new crosswalks, bike lanes, and curb extensions, which prevent cars from parking or turning right next to the corners of sidewalks at intersections. Known as "daylighting," these curb extensions provide more visibility to pedestrians and drivers at crosswalks.Bhalla introduced Citi Bike — the popular bike-sharing program — in 2021, and Hoboken now has bike lanes on almost half of its streets.The idea behind Hoboken's Vision Zero is to make its streets less car-focused, and more welcoming and accessible to all kinds of transport, Bhalla told Bloomberg CityLab.The improvements start out simple — sometimes all that's required is a little sidewalk paint, he said. Sturdier and more expensive road alterations come later."Just with a bucket of paint, you can actually create a curb extension; you can create high visibility crosswalks, which create a much safer environment at a very cheap cost," Bhalla said. It has also given permission for liquor to be served in bars, New Year events and in-house parties till 1 a.m. The department made it clear that this will be subject to observance of <keyword id="162487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Standard-Operating-Procedures">Standard Operating Procedures</keyword> (SOP) for Covid-19. All the three police commissionerates have announced a slew of measures to check drunken driving and New Year revelry on the roads. "So what are your plans tonight? Will meet you at special drive on drunken driving," the Hyderabad police tweeted. <keyword id="483117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-movement">Traffic movement</keyword> has been restricted on NTR Marg, Necklace Road and Tank Bund Road around Hussain Sagar lake. All flyovers in the city, except Begumpet flyover, will be closed on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1. Traffic will be diverted at various points to prevent gathering of revellers around the lake in the heart of the city. Buses, lorries, and heavy vehicles will not be allowed inside the city limits till 2 a.m. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said that extensive checks will be undertaken to curb drunken driving, rash and negligent driving, over speeding, and triple riding on two-wheelers and other traffic violations. Cyberabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar appealed to people to celebrate the New Year at home with family. "We all know that we are fighting Covid-19 and during these pandemic times it is important that we first think about our safety. Let's not celebrate New Year by organising social gathering, mass gathering, musical programmes and musical events. This time let us spend the New Year with our family and near and dear ones. Stay Home-Stay Safe." Every year, the Commissioner used to celebrate New Year Eve with police personnel by cutting a cake at the Cyber Towers junction. However, the celebration will not take place this tear due to the pandemic. Voicing his concern over the growing number of accidents due to drunken driving, the Commissioner announced that an intensive drive will be conducted to check the menace. Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat also advised people to stay home safely and restrict their movements. He said New Year celebrations are restricted in resorts, parks, hotels, bars, pubs and public places. Outer Ring Road (ORR) will be closed for light motor vehicles and passenger vehicles from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. in view of the safety of road users. However, medium and heavy goods vehicles will be allowed. Bonafide passengers travelling to the Airport on light motor vehicles will be allowed on ORR subject to production of tickets. Kamineni flyover, LB Nagar flyover, Sagar Ring Road flyover, LB Nagar underpass and Chintalkunta underpass will be closed for light motor vehicles, two-wheelers and passenger vehicles from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Police have warned that stringent action will be taken against those found driving under the influence of alcohol. The violators will be booked under section 185 of the <keyword id="6377804" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="motor-vehicles-act">Motor Vehicles Act</keyword>, 1988. The offenders may face a penalty of ₹10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 6 months for the first offence and a penalty of ₹15,000 and/or imprisonment up to 2 years for a second or subsequent offence. The police also warned that their driving licenses will be seized and sent to concerned road transport officers for suspension as per section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. For the first offence, the driving license will be suspended for 3 months and for second and subsequent offences, the driving license will be revoked permanently making the person ineligible to drive in India. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The shortage in US air traffic controllers is not new, but it has reached a critical juncture.</li><li>As controllers endure lengthier workweeks, they're becoming increasingly susceptible to making mistakes, per The Times.</li></ul>For years, air traffic controllers have seen their ranks diminish, to the point where 10-hour days and six-day workweeks have become increasingly common among this group tasked with preserving safety in America's skies.And the strain on controllers has led to a workforce that's become demoralized and exhausted, which in turn has led to controllers becoming increasingly susceptible to making mistakes, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/02/business/air-traffic-controllers-safety.html">according to The New York Times</a>.The Times examined a series of complaints made to the Federal Aviation Administration, the agency that regulates civil aviation in the United States, where controllers expressed concerns over dire staffing shortages, mental issues among some workers, and buildings that have become inhospitable for workers.In the set of complaints reviewed by the newspaper, there were no fewer than seven reports where controllers were found sleeping on the job and at least five reports of controllers having <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-traffic-controllers-workload-stress-alcohol-drugs-faa-close-calls-2023-12">signs of alcohol or drugs in their systems</a>.Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/08/21/business/airline-safety-close-calls.html">The Times published a detailed report</a> on how close calls at US airports were occurring, on average, multiple times a week — a stunning revelation given the overall safety of air travel in the US. In that report, the shortage of controllers was noted as issue that seriously threatened their ability to perform their jobs properly.However, the nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers is not a new phenomenon.In August 1981, then-President Ronald Reagan <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2021/08/05/1025018833/looking-back-on-when-president-reagan-fired-air-traffic-controllers">fired</a> 11,000 striking air traffic controllers, in what was a pivotal moment for the labor movement in the US. Reagan imposed a ban on the rehiring of striking controllers, but by 1986, some were permitted to reapply for their jobs. In May 1993, then-President Bill Clinton <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1993/05/11/us/officials-say-clinton-will-lift-1981-ban-on-air-controllers.html">rescinded the ban</a> on the remaining employees who had participated in the strike.But while some of the former controllers sought their old jobs, many chose not to do so. Since that tumultuous period, waves of controllers have departed the workforce as they hit retirement age, which has led to the current strain on the workforce.The problem was compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, when a slew of controllers left their roles and the FAA scaled back on the training of new controllers due to the strict health guidelines that were in place at the time, according to The Times.The Times this past summer noted that over the past decade, the number of trained controllers has declined by 10%, even as airline traffic went up by 5%.Neil Burke, a former controller who worked in the New York metropolitan area, which features major facilities like John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport, told The Times that controllers in the region have long worked six days a week and for 10 hours each day.Burke, who left his role due to a medical issue, told The Times that he found himself and others making mistakes due to the strain of the work schedule."What happens when you stretch a rubber band too much?" Burke said to the newspaper. "It breaks."FAA spokeswoman Jeannie Shiffer in a statement to The Times said that the agency "maintains the safest, most complex and busiest airspace in the world.""The nation absolutely needs more air traffic controllers, and growing the work force will result in better working conditions and more flexibility," she added.
