These violations include overspeeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, riding without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, red-light jumping, and stop-line violations. But it doesn't stop there! The city is expanding this AI-driven system to detect 13 different <keyword id="19948114" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-violations" source="keywords">traffic violations</keyword> — up from the existing seven. Among the new additions are wrong-side driving, illegal number plates, overloaded goods vehicles, broken or folded door mirrors, and illegal parking. "We will soon expand to cover 13 types of violations," Anucheth added, hinting at an even more stringent road regime. <h2>Eyes in the sky</h2>With a road network stretching over 14,000 km, more than 12 million registered vehicles, and around 40,000 traffic intersections, Bengaluru’s streets can get chaotic. To tackle this, Bengaluru’s AI system is leaving nothing to chance. The AI can do more than just catch rule-breakers; it can even detect waterlogged areas, cattle on the road, potholes, and unattended objects, ensuring smoother traffic flow. What’s more, these AI-based systems are equipped with <keyword id="22598445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Automatic-Number-Plate-Recognition" source="keywords">Automatic Number Plate Recognition</keyword> (ANPR) and can process video feeds from multiple sources, including surveillance cameras, body-worn cameras, and even social media feeds. So, even if you're accidentally caught on a neighbour’s camera violating a traffic rule, you could still be fined. “Instead of procuring additional cameras, we decided to obtain AI-based automatic violation detection licences to utilise our existing infrastructure for traffic enforcement and management," Anucheth explained. That means the city is becoming smarter without splurging on extra gadgets. <h2>Expect more fines</h2>In 2023 alone, <keyword id="21352185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru-traffic" source="keywords">Bengaluru Traffic</keyword> Police booked nearly 90 lakh cases and collected a record Rs 185.1 crore in fines. With the expanded AI system, these numbers are expected to soar even higher. Commuters along major arterial roads such as the Electronics City Elevated Expressway, Mysuru Road to Goraguntepalya, and Bellary Road should be particularly mindful. "No violation can escape the hawk eyes of our powerful cameras," said Karnataka’s Additional Director General of Police, Alok Kumar, after catching a bus driver talking on his phone while driving. <h2>Management, not just enforcement</h2>But Bengaluru’s AI isn’t just catching violators — it’s also helping ease the flow of traffic in a majorly congested city. AI is playing a crucial role in optimising <keyword id="21296378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-signals" source="keywords">traffic signals</keyword> to reduce congestion and manage traffic patterns. With its Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification (ATCC) feature, these <keyword id="21635811" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-cameras" source="keywords">AI cameras</keyword> will help monitor the types of vehicles clogging up different junctions, offering better insights for road management. To that end, Bengaluru has also introduced AI-powered traffic signals, which automatically adjust the timing of traffic lights based on real-time traffic conditions. This system, deployed across many important junctions in the city, monitors vehicle flow and helps reduce bottlenecks by adjusting traffic lights dynamically. In an ideal world, this will mean that there would be no more sitting at a red light when the road ahead is empty. With over 9,000 cameras being installed across the city under the Safe City project and access to 4,600 body-worn cameras, Bengaluru’s traffic police are bringing in a new era of high-tech enforcement. As Mumbai, India's financial capital, witnessed vertical growth over the years with highrises dotting its skyline, some 'gaothans' (villages) have held onto their heritage and legacy. Ranwar, in the heart of Bandra, is one such village that has resisted the urge to make way for towering structures. Dwarfed by highrises, the East Indian-majority village has narrow streets lined with old quaint bungalows and crosses outside homes. With jazz music streaming in the air, walking around the area can transport you to a simpler time. While Bandra developed rapidly and became home to Bollywood's elite and a burgeoning street shopping hub, residents of Ranwar maintained their old bungalows. The coexistence, however, has come at a price, causing traffic issues and crowding. And now, plans are afoot to give the 300-year-old village a facelift while preserving the past. Talking to PTI, <keyword id="23283968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Johan-Dharmai" source="Orion">Johan Dharmai</keyword>, BJP secretary and a member of the East Indian community, said, "Locals want to preserve the heritage. One of the steps in the facelift plan is to close vehicle movement and build a walkway so that tourists can take a stroll and enjoy the architecture." Though many houses in Ranwar are now being redeveloped, Veronica Street has maintained its old-world charm. It has a square erected in 1866. However, honking rents the air on this street, as motorists see it as a shortcut to Bandra Reclamation and other areas. Mehboob Studio is just a stone's throw away, and senior citizens living on Veronica Street recall seeing actors Helen and Zeenat Aman around Ranwar. A beautification, restoration and conservation project is being initiated to improve safety, regulate traffic and create awareness about the centuries-old village. Mumbai BJP president and <keyword id="20238930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-West" source="keywords">Bandra West</keyword> MLA Ashish Shelar recently met locals to discuss ways to move the project forward. "The beauty of Bandra West is its 'gaothans'. The heritage needs to be protected and showcased. I have asked the government to allocate funds from the District Planning Development Committee (DPDC). <keyword id="23283965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranwar-Village" source="keywords">Ranwar village</keyword> will get a facelift. The work has begun on roads, CCTV cameras, street light illumination, parking and traffic plan will be in place with the help of locals and architects," Shelar told PTI. <keyword id="23283967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Architect-Samir-DMonte" source="keywords">Architect Samir D'Monte</keyword> has been working with the Ranwar Veronica Street Residents' Association since 2009, and they identified a range of problems that the area faced. D'Monte said improvements were made to open spaces and common areas, roads, sewage and drainage systems, street signage, street lighting and traffic and parking management. Apart from this, individual houses were restored, and an innovative fire system was also introduced. Locals say most residents are senior citizens and want to live peacefully without disturbances by motorists. Kaevan Umrigar of Khaki Tours, who works to create awareness about Mumbai's heritage, said Bandra comprised 23 gaothans that housed fisher folk, Kunbis (a farming community) and the agris community who had salt pans. "Ranwar was a farming village, and the area had paddy fields. Later, these paddy fields made way for urban settlements. These little villages are now trapped in the city. Now, only 10 to 15 gaothans in Bandra have survived," he said. But preserving heritage comes at a cost, and if a 'gaothan' comes under heritage guidelines, it becomes difficult to upgrade a home in the area or live a modern life, Umigar said, adding that heritage should be made attractive by tapping the tourism potential of these areas. 'Gaothans' in Mumbai and the larger Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) are urban villages that house the city's original inhabitants. The Mumbai suburban district collector and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been roped in for Ranwar's facelift plan. Umigar calls land scarcity a threat to 'gaothans', with only 100 left in the city. "When someone wants to develop gaothans, they want to do it vertically. There is a constant battle between heritage and development. They (villages) survive because the houses are tightly packed and on narrow lanes. So individual houses are not attractive for redevelopment, and parking becomes an issue," he said.

300-year-old Bandra village to get facelift to conserve its glorious past

By the end of 2023, the couple said they were ready for their next <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bride-solo-bachelorette-trip-saved-money-stress-2024-8">adventure</a>. After visiting Charleston in January of the same year, they decided it would be ideal for their next move."Charleston seemed like a great place to have good weather and move back to the South a little closer to family and friends," Dawson, 27, said."I love beach towns," Morgan, 28, added. "And I was in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bride-loved-sheer-bejeweled-wedding-dress-at-first-sight-2024-7">wedding</a> and events industry, and that's really, really big in Charleston, so I was super interested in it."When Morgan was offered a job in the events industry in Charleston in March 2023, it seemed like the perfect chance to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-moved-from-knoxville-to-nyc-happier-despite-higher-costs-2024-3">relocate</a>. Dawson worked as a bartender and server when they arrived in Charleston, and he was hired as an HVAC sales representative three months into their move.But just five months after they relocated, the Mitchells discovered Charleston didn't live up to the hype for them.<h2 id="1060fde2-1af4-4819-9c32-9443e359f0e1">Charleston challenges</h2>The Mitchells told Business Insider that the cost of living in Charleston almost prevented them from moving there. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/rental-manager/market-trends/charleston-sc/">Zillow</a>, the median rent in the city is $2,800, but the Mitchells didn't want a place that cost more than $2,000 a month, so they struggled to find an apartment."That was just shocking to us being from rural areas," Dawson said, adding that it was important to stay within their budget, as they knew they could afford a mortgage for less in other areas.Eventually, they found <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-investing-how-to-select-a-rental-property-2024-8">an apartment to sublet</a> on Facebook Marketplace with five months left on its lease for $1,850 each month.<div type="image" title="A couple stands in a snowy field. They said gas was particularly frustrating because they found themselves stuck in the car more than they anticipated.Their rental was just eight miles from the office where Morgan worked, but she said she spent at least 45 minutes in the car each way to and from her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employees-listening-to-spicy-romance-books-smut-office-work-2024-8">job</a>."It's very low country, so there's not a whole lot of open land to build new roads and infrastructure," Dawson said. "For us, our quality time together is really important, and we were stuck in the car separate for so long," Morgan said. "We have Banjo, our dog, so by the time we made it home, it was like, 'OK, go take him out, cook dinner, time for bed.'""All of our free time dwindled," she added.Morgan said she spent most of her birthday visit to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/charleston-south-carolina-travel-guide-2017-5">King Street</a>, a major shopping destination in the city, in July trying to park."I almost gave up," she said. "I was just trying to take myself to Sephora for a nice little treat, and I had to make rounds for 45 minutes trying to find a parking spot."<h2 id="9fa03838-fc24-49f6-b03e-e313b63eebdc">Missing Southern charm</h2>The Mitchells also hoped that moving to Charleston would help them reconnect with the Southern culture they had been missing while living in Wyoming.But they said Charleston didn't feel as Southern as they thought it would. They said they had few chances to connect with other Southerners during their time there.Despite life's difficulties in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-south-carolina-retirement-taxes-weather-cost-of-living-2024-4">Charleston</a>, the Mitchells tried to prepare to stay longer term."We did put an offer in on a house, and we were really excited to stay there for a couple of years, and then that fell through," Morgan said.They said they could have renewed their lease on their rental, but the management company that owned it increased their rent to $2,250 a month, which they weren't willing to pay. The Mitchells couldn't find another apartment under $2,000 that fit their needs. They said the only options they found were in areas where they would not have felt comfortable walking Banjo at night.Soon, it felt like they weren't destined to stay in Charleston as they had thought."We love and kind of take pride in the fact that we've bopped around and moved all around and like going on these little adventures," Morgan said. "But we did want to be closer to family; his grandparents are getting older."The Mitchells also plan to invest in real estate, but given the cost of living in Charleston, they didn't feel like they could launch that career there."We started taking all these things as signs, and we're like, 'We have this opportunity to get out and go somewhere cheaper and build our savings,'" Morgan said.<h2 id="9c8f92dc-975a-44bf-82eb-3fe3af6e8319">Returning home</h2>Morgan and Dawson ultimately moved back to Louisville, Mississippi, when their lease in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-nashville-to-charleston-pros-cons-job-change-weather-2024-3">Charleston</a> expired on August 1.When the Mitchells spoke to BI, they had just signed a new lease in Louisville on an apartment that costs just $1,350 a month — $900 less than they would have paid on their similar Charleston unit.Morgan and Dawson also started new jobs when they moved. Morgan is now a social media manager at a medical facility, and Dawson is working remotely as a loan originator. Dawson said the HVAC company he worked for in Charleston offered him a slight raise when he put in his notice, but it wasn't enough to entice them to stay."We just knew it wasn't the right thing," Dawson said. Despite <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-sold-texas-home-traveling-abroad-to-find-new-home-2024-7">moving</a> twice in such a short period, the Mitchells told BI they have no regrets about their stint in Charleston."I think it was just one of those things that we had to try it for ourselves to be able to come back here," Morgan said.Though they can still see themselves moving around throughout their lives, the Mitchells said they are excited about the financial opportunities returning to Mississippi offers them."We chose to come back to Mississippi because our money will go so much further," Dawson said. "We can buy two properties for what half a property in Charleston would cost.""We're always going to look back and be like, 'What a fun summer we had,' but we knew it wasn't long-term," Morgan said, reflecting on their time in Charleston. "So we might as well just come back here and start building our savings the best we can."

It has consistently been among the 100 busiest airports in the world and was ranked <a target="_blank" href="https://www.worldairportawards.com/worlds-top-100-airports-2024/">as the world's 32nd-best by Skytrax in 2024</a>.On December 9, 2022, the morning shift controller arrived at work at 5:15 a.m. to find their night shift counterpart asleep at the console.The worker was discovered lying across two chairs with a blanket covering them, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atsb.gov.au/sites/default/files/2024-09/AO-2022-065%20%28Final%29.pdf">the report</a>. They were still wearing their headset, and the air situation display (ASD) screensaver was on.After ensuring there was no traffic in the area, the station was handed over to the oncoming controller.The report noted that the Brisbane Centre building was cooler at night, and it was considered normal practice for blankets to be used during night shifts.The ATSB's report blamed multiple night shifts in a short space of time, the worker's low workload, and an ineffective risk management system for the incident. It noted that the worker had 10 years of experience as a controller and had been in their current position for three years. However, due to last minute roster changes, they had worked their seventh night shift in nine days and had not taken the recommended rest period in between.There had been no traffic or scheduled flights in the airspace the controller was responsible for and a system supervisor had been on duty at the front desk of the center.However, the report found that cumulative fatigue was not being effectively managed at the center."Likely due to an underlying lack of resources within Airservices Australia, there was an over-reliance on tactical changes to manage the roster," investigators said.The ATSB said it would update its safety procedures and fatigue risk management regulations in response to the incident.Airservices Australia, which runs the Brisbane Centre, has increased the overall number of air traffic controllers and enhanced internal processes since the incident, according to the report. The ATSB will continue to monitor the issue.In the US, fatigue has been a growing safety concern as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airport-collision-close-call-solutions-sleep-runways-air-traffic-controllers-2024-2">shortages of air traffic controllers</a> have driven up the amount of overtime required for those that remain. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Tourism in Maui hasn't recovered, almost a year after a wildfire devastated Lahaina Town.</li><li>The manager of the Four Seasons said most of Maui is open and that tourism is encouraged.</li></ul>A year after a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maui-fires-where-to-visit-avoid-2023-8">wildfire ripped through Maui</a> and devastated parts of Lahaina Town, tourism has yet to recover — even though right now might be a great time to visit, according to the general manager of the resort where season one of HBO's "The White Lotus" was filmed."Outside of the five square miles of the historic Lahaina Town, which is still closed, all of the rest of Maui is fully open, fully functioning, and actually has been since fairly early after the fires," Ben Shank, the general manager at the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maui-tourists-complain-activities-cancelled-over-fires-employee-four-seasons-2023-8">Fours Seasons Resort Maui</a>, told Business Insider.In August of last year, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lahaina-maui-wildfire-what-went-wrong-climate-colonialism-2023-8">wildfire tore through Lahaina's historic downtown</a>, destroying homes and businesses and displacing thousands.In the immediate aftermath of the fires, some prominent public figures <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maui-food-truck-owner-irresponsible-to-tell-tourists-island-is-closed-2023-8">discouraged tourists from visiting Maui</a> while the community recovered, even though most areas of the island were not directly impacted by the fires and remained open.Some locals and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maui-small-business-owner-stop-telling-tourists-stay-away-fires-2023-8">business owners</a> were quick to encourage tourists to return, citing the importance of tourism to the island's economy. According to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.medb.org/tourism/">Maui Economic Development Board</a>, around 70% of every dollar in Maui County is generated, either directly or indirectly, by the tourism industry.Tourism numbers from June 2024 show that nearly a year on, visit numbers had yet to return to their pre-fire levels. The number of visitors to the island in June 2024 was 22% lower than June 2023, while visitor spending decreased by 27%, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.hawaiitourismauthority.org/media/13156/june-2024-visitor-statistics-press-release.pdf">Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism</a>. Total visitor spending was down more than $800 million in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.Shank said the good news is that the recovery of Lahaina is making some progress, with excavation ongoing and residential properties starting to be rebuilt. Now he said many are trying to get the message out to tourists that they are not only welcome but encouraged to return."By people traveling here, they are actually giving back and contributing not only for their own personal experience, but just the lifeline of how the island works," Shank said.A recent study conducted by the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://hsrha.org/maui-together/">Hawaii State Rural Health Association</a> surveyed more than 2,000 Maui locals, including some impacted by the fires. The study found 72% of Maui County residents — from all over the county, not just where the fires were — said they were directly or indirectly impacted by the fires.The study also found most residents, regardless of where they lived, were more worried than hopeful about their future on the island.Lisa Paulson, the executive director of the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association, told BI she thinks part of the reason tourism has not fully recovered is the initial mixed messaging about whether the island was "closed" or "open" to tourists."We're working with all our partners to make sure that we send out better marketing messages that everybody's welcome, and we thank them for their support throughout this last year," Paulson said.<div type="image" title="Main fountain pool at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea hotel" height="768" width="1024" msid="112266155" hostid="261" sizebytes="130384"></div><h2 id="1961b29b-8ea1-48e7-8920-dbe287ff7b43">Maui is less crowded right now, and you can find deals</h2>In addition to helping the island's recovery, tourists who visit Maui right now may also be surprised by how accessible the island is right now, according to Shank, who said there's a lot of value to be found.The Four Seasons, for instance, has removed all resort fees in order to encourage summer travelers and offers a complimentary kids' program in addition to free poolside cabanas.There are also just not as big of crowds as there are when Maui is at peak tourism, making it a good place to go to avoid the summer crowds that are currently swarming in other destinations, like in Europe.Shank and his family had recently done the road to Hana, a famous, winding drive with pull offs for waterfall and black-sand beaches that is notorious for getting backed up with traffic."It was amazing, so much that you can just drive, pull over, stop wherever you want, visit the local vendors, go check out a cool secret beach, and it didn't feel crowded," he said.Tourists are still encouraged to act responsibly when they visit Maui, and there are opportunities to donate or help out with Lahaina recovery efforts. The Four Seasons also offers beach and reef cleanups that guests can volunteer for and earn resort credit by participating.Shank said the Four Seasons is also encouraging tourists to actively get out and support the island during their visit."Get out from the resorts. Go visit local restaurants. Shop in the local art galleries. Do excursions with the different companies. Travel to the different parts of the island," he said. "It's an amazing way to give back and support the island."
