New Delhi, <keyword id="842113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Domestic-air-passenger-traffic" source="Orion">Domestic air passenger traffic</keyword> in the country recorded an annual growth of nearly 11 per cent to 1.26 crore in October, according to official data released on Thursday. The traffic stood at 1.14 crore passengers in October 2022 and at 1.22 crore passengers in September this year. The data released by aviation regulator DGCA showed that IndiGo carried 79.07 lakh passengers, garnering a domestic market share of 62.6 per cent in October. The market share was lower compared to 63.4 per cent registered in September. Last month, Air India's domestic market share climbed to 10.5 per cent from 9.8 per cent in September while that of Vistara and AirAsia India (renamed as AIX Connect) declined to 9.7 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively, in October. SpiceJet's market share grew to 5 per cent in October from 4.4 per cent in September while that of Akasa Air remained unchanged at 4.2 per cent. "Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-October 2023 were 1,254.98 lakhs as against 988.31 lakhs during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering annual growth of 26.98 per cent and monthly growth of 10.78 per cent," the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said. As many as 587 passengers were denied boarding by scheduled airlines in October, according to the data. A total of 30,307 passengers were affected by flight cancellations and 1,78,227 passengers were impacted due to flight delays last month.

Domestic air passenger traffic rises 11% in October

<ul><li>India's domestic <keyword id="4846499" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="aviation-traffic">aviation traffic</keyword> has been recorded as 9.1%, according to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). </li><li>The domestic fares in the month of January were over 15% higher than during the same period last year. </li><li>According to the report, a total of 12.50 million passengers took domestic flights last month.</li></ul>India's domestic air passenger traffic has slowed down further — with an year-on-year growth of 9.1% in January 2019 — which is the <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/logistics/domestic-airlines-record-9-per-cent-growth-indigo-retains-number-1-position/article26319510.ece">slowest</a> in last four years.  Over the past four years, the domestic passenger traffic in India has consistently been in double digits. However, the slowdown has been affecting the aviation industry since a few months. According to the industry watchdog, the slow growth may be <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/not-flying-high-air-passenger-traffic-growth-in-jan-slowest-in-over-four-years/1493852/">attributed</a> to the rising fares and lesser demand in contrast. In fact, the domestic fares in the month of January were over 15% higher than during the same period last year. With AirAsia India as an exception, the other domestic carriers in India reported an year-on-year decline at nearly 3%, in terms of occupancy. While AirAsia, a Tata sons joint venture, recorded nearly 84% occupancy. Additionally, weather disruptions played a big part in affecting flight schedules leading to several flight cancellations, thereby affecting the passenger traffic for the carrier. However, the DGCA <a href="https://www.zeebiz.com/india/news-aviation-flight-cancellations-affect-jan-air-passenger-growth-86834">reportedly</a> said that the downward projection is due to the tourist season coming to an end. Air traffic and fares were also significantly affected due to operational factors, leading to last minute cancellations, said Aloke Bajpai, CEO, ixigo. The last minute airfares therefore hiked to nearly 20-25% last month, he added. As per the DGCA's monthly traffic data, a total of 12.50 million passengers took domestic flights last month. While 11.46 million flyers boarded in January 2018 — accounting for the 9% growth, IANS reported. The rate of cancellations of scheduled domestic carriers was noted at 1.81% — with nearly 917 flyer complaints. India's domestic air passenger growth is at its lowest in four years

Let’s assume a Bangalorean started reading this article when he took a cab at Bengaluru’s Whitefield. There are 90% chances that by the time he finishes reading this article, sharing it with friends, commenting on the social media, eating his evening snack and swallowing all of that with a fizzy drink, the person would still be stuck in <keyword id="2998639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Whitefield-traffic">Whitefield traffic</keyword>. 
 
This is not an odd day out and people of Bengaluru are bearing the brunt of the burgeoning traffic problem every minute. 
 
There are umpteen number of tweets, Facebook posts, threads on social media by people of Bengaluru who have missed their meetings, trains, flights, important function, cricket matches, etc because of the traffic. They say starting five minute early also makes no difference as they have to face chock-a-block traffic in any case. 
 
A glance at the stats will further reveal the grim situation. As per the data from Bengaluru’s RTO, the number of registered vehicles in the city went up from 55.59 lakh vehicles in 2015 to more than 60 lakh as of January 2016. 
 
This means, every month, 10% vehicles are getting added every day to the roads. Moreover, Bengaluru carries over 2.3 million riders daily and the average speeds is 18 kph, with which India’s Silicon Valley is counted among India’s slowest metros. 
 
The nerve wrecking situation is also because Bengaluru has a road density of 8.2 kilometre (km) per square km, the lowest among big Indian cities, and the scope of expansion is quite limited. In comparison, Delhi has a road density of 21.6 km per square km.

Predicting travel times, especially amidst city traffic is not an easy task. Despite years of experience, we can often go wrong with our predictions, and yet, Google Maps’ traffic predictions are accurate more often than not. So, how does Google do it? The answer – Machine Learning. Google’s new traffic and bus delay prediction system went live a few months ago in India. Once this is done, Google reports the forecast based on the query of the user – it can be just one unit or a sum of all the units. Tuning the model to the local beat Each city moves differently, and Google recognizes this. Ever miss a bus due to a 5-minute delay? We have all been there at one point or the other. To make sure its bus predictions are accurate enough, Google uses data obtained from traffic signals and rush hour crowds at bus stops. Additionally, the commute times can vary wildly on the same route at different times of the day. To wade through these issues, Google says that it puts time in a 4-dimensional loop, which is demonstrated via the rendering above. In total, Google combines all these widely different signals and combines them together to address user queries based on several variables. The traffic delays feature is live in Google Maps in several cities in India. How Google Maps predicts traffic accurately in India

India's domestic air passenger traffic rose 9% to more than 1.27 crore in November, according to official data released on Friday. Last month also saw daily air traffic touching new highs multiple times. <keyword id="6354706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indigo" source="Orion">IndiGo</keyword> remained the country's largest domestic carrier but its market share declined to 61.8% in November from 62.6% in October. However, none of the scheduled carriers had an On-Time Performance (OTP) score of more than 80% in November. Official data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday showed that airlines flew 1.27 crore passengers in November compared to 1.17 crore in the year-ago period. This marks a growth of 9.06% on an annual basis. "Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-November 2023 were 1,382.34 lakhs as against 1,105.10 lakhs during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering annual growth of 25.09% and monthly growth of 9.06%," DGCA said. The domestic market share of <keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword> rose to 6.2% in November from 5% in October. Its OTP stood at 41.8% last month. <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>'s domestic market share remained unchanged at 10.5% in November while that of Vistara fell marginally to 9.4% last month. In November, the share of Akasa Air and AIX Connect remained unchanged at 4.2% and 6.6%, respectively. As per the data, Akasa Air topped the OTP chart at 78.2%, followed by IndiGo at 77.5% and Vistara at 72.8%. Air India's OTP was at 62.5% while that of AIX Connect and Alliance Air were at 69.7% and 66.1%, respectively. On-Time Performance (OTP) of scheduled domestic airlines is computed for four metro airports -- Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

The number of domestic air passengers in India is expected to double to about 300 million annually by 2030 and the country would still have a vast untapped market, Union Civil Aviation Minister <keyword id="19999763" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jyotiraditya-scindia" source="keywords">Jyotiraditya Scindia</keyword> said on Thursday. Speaking at the inaugural session of Wings India 2024, a civil aviation conclave and exhibition here, <keyword id="19905342" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scindia" source="keywords">Scindia</keyword> said India under the leadership of Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> in the last decade, has been a "shining star" on the global firmament of civil aviation. He said the number of airports and waterdromes will go up to over 200 from the existing 149 in the country. With 300 million passengers a year in 2030, India's aviation penetration would be at 10-15% and still be a potential market in the decades to come. "That is the potential that India holds not only to herself and Asia, but to the world. ...even with achieving 300 million domestic passengers by 2030, we will still be one of the most under-penetrated markets across the top 20 in the world. Today our penetration is roughly about 3 to 4% that will grow to about 10 to 15%. We still have 85% penetration to go," he said. He noted that the domestic air passenger traffic witnessed 15% growth (CAGR) while international air passenger traffic was 6.1%, in the last decade. According to Scindia, India today is the third largest domestic civil aviation market in the world and the seventh largest international civil aviation market in the world. If both domestic and international are combined, then India is the fifth largest civil aviation market in the world. In the last 15 years, domestic and international cargo witnessed a growth of 60 and 53% respectively. "Our domestic cargo traffic over the last 15 years has grown by close to 60% and our international cargo traffic, by close to 53%. And it is our considered opinion and that of industry consultants that domestic traffic which was 153 million in the last calendar year, up from 60 million in 2014, will grow to 300 million by 2030," he said. On the fleet size in the country, Scindia said it has grown from 400 to over 700. "Today, India has become the largest purchaser of aircraft in the world after the US and China. Our fleet size is going to grow from 713 to upwards of 2,000 in the next decade." Observing that 74 airports were built in 65 years, he said the government has modernized and built an additional 75 airports, waterdromes and heliports in the last 10 years. "It is our target, that by 2030, we will take that number from 149 to upwards of 200 airports, waterports and heliports in our country," he said. Scindia also marked the occasion by launching the Udan 5.3 scheme. "This regional connectivity scheme has truly transformed the arena and our sector... today under Udan, infrastructure has been built at 76 airports, waterdromes and heliports. Close to 517 new routes have been operationalised that could not have been dreamt of in the past," he said. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation General (retd) VK Singh and Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister K Venkat Reddy also spoke on the occasion.

Air passenger traffic in India expected to reach 300 million by 2030: Jyotiraditya Scindia

Interestingly, the report revealed that there are already two million active 5G devices in use across the country. In 2020, the data traffic grew by 36% year-over-year primarily due to rise in <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> data consumption as 4G subscribers surpassed 700 million with 100 million new additions during the year, said the Mobile Broadband India Traffic Index (MBiT) 2021 report on mobile broadband performance in India. The research showed that 4G alone constituted nearly 99% of the total data traffic consumed across the country in 2020. "The phenomenal growth in data consumption in India will drive demand for enhanced broadband and fixed capacity," Sanjay Malik, Senior Vice President and Head of India Market, Nokia, said in a statement. According to the study, the average monthly data usage per user reached 13.5 GB in December 2020, growing over 20% annually owing to an increase in data subscribers and mobile video consumption. New users from rural areas also contributed to the rising monthly data usage. Mobile emerged as primary source of entertainment and productivity as an average Indian spent approximately 5 hours daily on a smartphone which is one of the highest averages globally. Short video format was the fastest-growing content category, said the report, adding that total time spent monthly on short content is expected to grow four times by 2025. Relating to device trends, the report reveals that the 4G device base surpassed 607 million units reaching a 77% penetration level. A double-digit growth is expected in 2021 for the smartphone industry as people embrace hybrid work models, e-learning, and consume content over <keyword id="1245953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OTT">OTT</keyword> (over-the-top) platforms. With only 22 million fixed broadband subscribers, there is a significant growth opportunity for this segment. Data traffic grew by 60 times in past 5 years – 99% of the data usage came from 4G in 2020

According to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nokia">Nokia</a>'s MBiT Index study, India's 3G traffic saw a whopping 85% traffic growth in 2015. This points to a growing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=smartphone">smartphone</a> adoption and multimedia services. These factors would boost traffic further as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=4G+LTE">4G LTE</a> networks are rolled out across the country.

	"3G will remain prime engine to drive data in the coming years. We'll soon see widespread 4G acceptance in select Tier I cities. India will be a heterogenous mix of 2G, 3G and 4G," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Amit+Marwah">Amit Marwah</a>, Head of Technology, India, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nokia">Nokia</a> said.

	Overall mobile data traffic grew by 50% in 2015, with 3G outpacing 2G across all circles for the first time. Average monthly data usage for 3G surpassed 750 MB per subscriber.

Mumbai’s car density rose by 18% in the last two years with 510 cars for kilometers of road, Times of India reported. The density is five times higher than that of New Delhi, which is also struggling with longer traffic jams and lower Air Quality Index, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mumbais-car-density-5-times-that-of-delhi/articleshow/68553387.cms?from=mdr">reported</a> the Times of India. Other cities struggling with the problem of high car congestion include Pune with 359 cars per kilometre, followed by Kolkata with 319 cars per km and Chennai with 297 cars per km. The primary reason behind car-congestion is insufficient road space. The private car population of Mumbai is less than a third of Delhi but it has only 2,000km of road in comparison to 28,000 km road space in Delhi. The under-construction Mumbai metro network adds to the problem. There were only 430 cars per km in mid-2016, according to Maharashtra transport ministry data, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/mumbais-car-density-5-times-that-of-delhi/articleshow/68553387.cms?from=mdr">reported the Times</a> of India. However, the government <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/mumbai-metro-work-causes-traffic-bottlenecks/story-yARZ73LiWSpMYFgfiKLTeM.html">expects</a> traffic to ease once the Metro project finishes by 2021. In mid-2016, car density in Mumbai was 430 cars per km, which has now gone up to 510, This has taken the total number of registered private cars to 1 million on city roads, roughly 28% of the total vehicular population in the city, which stands at 3.6 million, said the report citing an official. Nearly half the road space is occupied by private cars of all types including SUVs which is why the average speed on the Western Express highway is limited to 10kmph during peak hours. There is an urgent need to set up a parking authority which will overlook parking problems in the city and free up 50% roadspace in the city, said the reporting citing an official. <ul><li>A new report by Sandvine states that <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> accounts for nearly 15% of internet traffic globally, but the same doesn’t hold true for <keyword id="21718" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia">Asia</keyword> or India.</li><li>Rather than content of accessibility, price seems to be the determining factor for consumers when choosing to subscribe to a streaming-video on-demand service. </li><li>Data indicated that the potential for Indian video streaming lies in streaming live sports. </li></ul>While <keyword id="2739840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotstar">Hotstar</keyword> and <keyword id="758541" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime">Amazon Prime</keyword> may be the most popular streaming networks in India, but globally, it’s Netflix that’s dominating when it comes to internet traffic. Nearly 15% of global internet traffic is Netflix according to the <a href="https://www.sandvine.com/phenomena">Sandvine’s Global Internet Phenomena Report.</a> Overall, video rules the roost accounting for 58% of all downstream internet traffic. While Netflix also dominates in terms of traffic with 27% of the streaming video traffic share, it also means that the video streaming platform and its many embeds are heavier downloads. That being said, Netflix is yet to make its impact in Asia. According to the report, the majority of video traffic in the area is generated via regional streaming providers followed by Facebook video. They account for nearly 12% of the downstream application traffic share. Reports <a href="https://www.limelight.com/resources/white-paper/state-of-online-video-2018/">analyse</a> that price is the primary reason that consumers choose to cancel their subscription to the streaming video-on-demand services. And even while choosing to switch over from cable to an online service, price is the primary determining factor. India’s potential One area where India’s potential lies is in sports video streaming. According to the ‘<a href="https://www.limelight.com/resources/white-paper/state-of-online-video-2018/">State of Online Video 2018</a>’, India has the highest percentage of viewers, at nearly 80%, who said they’d love to watch live sports streams online if only there wasn’t a lag. That doesn't necessarily spell good news for Netflix who has repeated <a href="http://stated">stated</a> that it has 'no plans' of venturing in to the live sports streaming. As of now, Amazon has secured the rights to stream the English Premier League matches while Hotstar, owned by <keyword id="17943" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="star-india">Star India</keyword>, has the rights to the cricketing Indian Premier League. On average, Indians are spending 8 hours and 28 minutes more time watching online videos than they are watching television. The report by Limelight Networks also highlights how the Indian average time spent watching online videos is much higher than the global average of 6 hours and 45 minutes. Most of the online video content being consumed is movies, followed by news and TV shows. What’s interesting is that India has one of the highest percentages of viewers watching people play online video games. And, it’s primarily being consumed on a smartphone. The report speculates that the younger generation prefers the portable device while older people prefer streaming on their computers. Security The concern with APAC countries primarily watching video on regional streams is that it’s coupled with the fact that the region also have the higher amount of unencrypted traffic. While it may not be something to panic about, it implies that the local applications aren’t up to code on the latest web protocols. Either way, it’s definitely not good for the viewer.
