<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="12229146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="harlem" source="Orion">Harlem</keyword>" is a new show that centers on four friends in their 30s, living in New York City.</li><li>Creator <keyword id="12683513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tracy-oliver" source="Orion">Tracy Oliver</keyword> said she wanted to write a series that would undo the tropes of being in your 30s.</li></ul><p>Amazon Prime Video's new series "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Harlem-Season-1/dp/B09KT9ZVX9">Harlem</a>" follows four millennial women as they balance their careers, friendships, and romantic lives in the New York City neighborhood of the same name.</p><p>Writer and creator Tracy Oliver said she was inspired by watching her friends in their 30s — who were either starting new careers at 35 or getting divorced and reentering the dating pool — proving that it was a "myth" that everyone should have their life figured out by a certain age.</p><p>"I'm just seeing people have a rebirth and figuring their stuff out," Oliver told Insider during a recent press junket. "And I just thought, 'Yeah, let's do that show — let's tackle the messiness of your 30s."</p><p>"Harlem" follows Camille (Meagan Good), a Columbia adjunct professor balancing her career and love life; Tye (Jerrie Johnson) a successful tech entrepreneur, who created a dating app for queer people of color like herself; Angie (Shoniqua Shandai), a singer pursuing her dream unapologetically; and Quinn (Grace Byers), a hopeless romantic and rising fashion designer.</p><p>Oliver hopes to dismantle the trope of women reaching certain milestones by the time they're 30.</p><p>"I was the girl that cried every single birthday — like hysterically cried — because I was getting older," she said, thinking back to how '90s rom-coms and other media reinforced the idea that you needed marriage, kids, and a solid career by a certain age. </p><div type="image" title="(L-R): Grace Byers (Quinn), Shoniqua Shandai (Angie), Jerrie Johnson (Tye), Meagan Good (Camille)" height="1949" width="3900" msid="88132771" hostid="261"></div><p>"So then I was like, 'So why are me and my friends still so lost in our 30s? Oh, well because it's a myth,'" Oliver said. "It's not real. We made this up."</p><p>Along with breaking down that trope, Oliver said she was also "deliberate" in wanting to base and shoot her show in Harlem, describing it as an influential and culturally rich part of New York City. The "Girls Trip" writer wanted to change the pattern she saw with TV shows that were set in New York but never used Harlem as a filming location. </p><p>"I really wanted to set a show in New York," Oliver said. "I wrote the script years ago, and at that point, it was like 'Girls' and 'Broad City' on the air. I love both those shows, but Black and brown people were not a part of those shows."</p><p>"And so I'm watching [these shows] and I'm like, why does New York continue to not have Black and brown people in them?" she said. Bringing in her own experience of the city was a key part of crafting the show.</p><p>"It just felt really magical," she said. "I felt like Harlem was a really unique, special place. And the people there were really friendly and cool. I just had so much fun getting drunk and going and doing bottomless brunches and being on the train and hanging out."</p><p>She continued: "I loved the camaraderie between me and my girlfriends, but also I wanted to shine a light on the city of Harlem."</p><p>"Harlem" also starring Tyler Lepley, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jasmine Guy is available now on <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Harlem-Season-1/dp/B09KT9ZVX9">Prime Video</a>.</p>

'Harlem' creator Tracy Oliver is dismantling the 'myth' of having your life figured out in your 30s

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tim Story's new movie "The Blackening" is in theaters now.</li><li>He spoke to Insider about transforming a comedy sketch into a feature-length horror movie.</li></ul><p>With "The Blackening," Tim Story dips his toe into the horror genre for the first time in his career.</p><p>The 53-year-old director has done it all, from action comedies like <a href="https://www.insider.com/movie-remake-reboot-sequel-ranked-by-critics-2019-11">"Shaft"</a> and "Ride Along," to the romantic comedy "Think Like A Man," to a foray into Marvel superhero fare with the 2000s "Fantastic Four" movies starring Jessica Alba and Chris Evans.</p><p>Story's movies tend to lean into comedy, and "The Blackening," <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-horror-comedy-movies-to-watch-on-netflix-2021-2">a horror comedy</a> that satirizes horror tropes and African-American stereotypes, is no different.</p><p>"The Blackening" is based on a 2018 comedy sketch of the same name in which a group of Black people try to determine who is the "Blackest," and therefore should die first at the hands of a rampaging killer. The gag, of course, is that Black characters tend to die first in horror movies.</p><p>Following the success of the sketch, writer Dewayne Perkins teamed up with Tracy Oliver to turn the short into a feature-length movie.</p><p>Since premiering at Toronto International Film Festival last September, "The Blackening" has been met with rave reviews, and now finally finds its way into theaters this weekend.</p><p>Insider spoke to Story about the new movie <a href="https://www.insider.com/scream-6-tony-revolori-writers-opening-reveal-ghostface-2023-5">being compared to "Scream,"</a> and why he thinks his Marvel sequel, "<a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-alba-believes-marvel-films-are-still-quite-caucasian-2022-7">Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,"</a> was not as successful as the original.</p><div type="image" title="Fans started to refer to the movie as &quot;We Can't All Die First&quot; since the tagline is bigger than the title on the poster." height="1481" width="1000" msid="101043628" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Fans have said on social media that they preferred the movie's tagline, "We Can't All Die First," to "The Blackening." They have even gone as far as to refer to the movie as "We Can't All Die First." If you could go back, would you change it?</strong></p><p>Absolutely not. No. I'll take whatever they want to call the movie. We do know the movie is "The Blackening," but that tagline has been such a favorite of ours. When you have something else like that, that can create a conversation, I'll take it all day long,</p><p><strong>This movie started out as a sketch before being adapted into a full-length film. What did you see in the script that drew you to the project?</strong></p><p>Well, luckily we had this young lady by the name of Tracy Oliver track Dewayne Perkins down to make his short into a feature script. I was brought on early as a producer and figured it would be something great because they're both talented writers, and Dewayne has an amazing voice. And I must admit my decision to direct didn't happen until I got the script. </p><p>Once I got the script, it was one of the funniest things I'd read in quite a long time, and I raised my hand and decided that maybe I would give it a shot. When you read something like that, that talks to you, and you kind of see the movie immediately, I don't second guess going behind the camera and trying to make it happen.</p><p><strong>This movie premieres in theaters this weekend, right before Juneteenth, and the story actually is set on Juneteenth. Was that just a funny coincidence?</strong></p><p>It seemed a perfect fit with the film having these friends celebrate around that holiday. It seemed fitting that if we could make it work inside of that date, with Juneteenth, then why not? Luckily the studio felt the same way and we're going for it. We think it's a great day for us and fingers crossed, hopefully, the audience has come out.</p><div type="image" title="The main cast of &quot;The Blackening&quot; (L-R): Melvin Gregg, Grace Byers, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jermaine Fowler, Dewayne Perkins and Xochitl Mayo" height="1333" width="1777" msid="101043630" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>There's been a lot of comparison between this movie and other satirical horror movies, especially "Scream." However, the body count is lower than in typical slasher films. Was that intentional?</strong> </p><p>We didn't look to any one film to base it off of. There are not a lot of films that we could look to in this genre in terms of a horror comedy, but "Scream" was definitely one of those we looked at. Also, we get the comparisons to, say, "Scary Movie." We also go back into the slasher movies that we know of — "Friday the 13th," "Halloween," and "The Exorcist" — and all of these types of movies, we take a little bit from and we found our own road. We just found our own little lane, our own tone.  When the audiences start to see it, we're a little bit more grounded but we still have just as much fun and, hopefully, we will become kind of the thing that other movies are comparing themselves to. </p><p><strong>You have had an impressive career directing movies that I grew up with, such as "Barbershop," "Taxi," and "Ride Along." Your movies tend to attract big African-American audiences, partly due to having a largely Black cast. Has it been easier to pitch movies with Black leads or largely Black casts over the years?</strong></p><p>That's a great question. It ebbs and flows. It's like when we do pitch these, the great thing about it is having a career and having a history that kind of shows that these movies can make money, they can bring in a broader audience than maybe we're specifically making it for. I found throughout my career that when I make something that's really specific to the audience, it also becomes quite universal and quite accessible to all cultures. And that's what I go in and basically pitch. And the great thing about it is, I've been able to have some examples of it working on a broader scale and fingers crossed that they'll continue to let me make 'em.</p><div type="image" title="Julian McMahon as Victor Von Doom in &quot;Fantastic Four&quot; and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in &quot;Iron Man.&quot;" height="960" width="1280" msid="101043634" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>There was a story recently that <a href="https://www.insider.com/robert-downey-jr-nearly-cast-fantastic-four-jon-favreau-says-2023-5">Robert Downey Jr. was in the running to play Doctor Doom in the 2005 "Fantastic Four" movie, which you directed.</a> What stuck out to you about Julian McMahon that made you pick him as your Doctor Doom?</strong></p><p>Julian's just an amazing actor. If you know the character of Victor von Doom, he's quite arrogant, he is quite brilliant, and we felt that Julian gave us exactly what we were looking for. I was just honored to be able to have him in the movie. And as you can see, I think he did the part some great justice.</p><p><strong>While the first movie was highly successful, the second movie, "Rise of the Silver Surfer," was not as big of a hit. In hindsight, where do you think the sequel went wrong?</strong></p><p>I don't know if I'd call it going wrong. I think I made a movie that I'm extremely proud of. And so, what you find is that, in those things, as I've been a part of other sequels and part of franchises, you have to just keep making them and make them the way you want to see them. And when and if an audience comes out, they do. If they don't... What I've done many times in my career is, I always make stuff that I like and you cross your fingers that you find your audience.</p><p><strong>Final question about <a href="https://www.insider.com/fantastic-4-reboot-marvel-fans-react-2020-12">"Fantastic Four."</a> There was talk of a third sequel, which was scrapped. What happened there?</strong></p><p>No, nothing wrong. Basically, a regime change changed the course of what they were gonna do. So it was pretty much just that. There's some things you don't have control over. </p><p><strong>Finally, I know you have the third "Ride Along" in the works. Is there any update?</strong></p><p>We've been working on a script for some time, and then we've had to basically try to figure out a way to coordinate Cube and Kevin's schedules, and it's been quite difficult. So at some point, I'm really hoping we can kind of get those schedules all connected and give you guys another one. </p><p>"The Blackening" is in theaters now.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider spoke with <keyword id="12361687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="yvonne-orji" source="Orion">Yvonne Orji</keyword> ahead of "<keyword id="12179176" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="insecure" source="Orion">Insecure</keyword>" ending after five seasons on Sunday.</li><li>"Our show was able to allow executives and creatives to see what is possible," she said.</li></ul><p>When Amazon debuted "Harlem," it was immediately dubbed the new "Insecure" by critics, writers, and fans on social media. In reality, there is very little that links the two shows.</p><p>"Harlem," a <a href="https://www.insider.com/whoopi-goldberg-inspired-meagan-good-to-stop-apologizing-so-much-2021-12">10-episode comedy series about the lives of four Black thirty-somethings</a> in New York City starring Megan Good and Whoopie Goldberg, created by "Girls Trip" writer Tracy Oliver, is a much less ambitious show constructed around familiar narrative templates that, in fact, resemble comedies like <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-happens-mr-big-and-just-like-that-satc-revival-2021-12">"Sex in The City"</a> and "How I Met Your Mother" more than "Insecure."</p><p>This brand of classification is indicative of Hollywood's shallow ideas of identity and politics as the comparison is really a matter of race and gender. (Boots Riley's "Sorry To Bother You" was called the new "Get Out," for example.)</p><p>Still, in the case of the 30-minute, female-led-and-created Black television comedy, it is difficult to create any kind of commentary without mentioning "Insecure."</p><div type="image" title="Molly and Issa in HBO Insecure season three Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji" height="1209" width="1612" msid="88397815" hostid="261"></div><p>When Issa Rae debuted <keyword id="11921392" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hbo" source="Orion">HBO</keyword>'s "Insecure" in 2016, she became the first Black woman to create and star in a scripted series for a premium cable channel. She's the second Black woman to do it in primetime TV, behind Wanda Sykes, who created "Wanda At Large" for Fox in 2003.</p><p>Across its five-season run, the show, which tells the story of Issa — a former drifter turned community organizer (played by Issa Rae) — and Molly — an accomplished, romantically doomed, well-to-do lawyer (played by Yvonne Orji) has picked up a slew of historic awards and nominations.</p><p>When the final episode of "Insecure" airs next week, on Boxing Day, it will mark the end of a unique and influential era of Black television and that's not lost on its stars, including Yvonne Orji.</p><p>"Our show was able to allow executives and creatives to see what is possible; to be able to tell a truthful, undiluted story about the Black experience in a way that has no trauma associated with it," Orji told Insider when speaking about the lasting influence "Insecure" has created.  </p><p>"I hope it opens up doors for other kinds of shows that can lend themselves to that experience as well. We would love to see something similar to 'Insecure' but set in XYZ or similar to 'Insecure' but focused on this." </p><div type="image" title="&quot;insecure&quot;" height="2640" width="3960" msid="88397816" hostid="261"></div><p>Orji, who picked up her first Emmy nomination in 2020 for her role as Molly, continued to recount some of the first-hand anecdotes she has heard about the influence "Insecure" has had in the creation of new television comedies, including the story of one television executive who revealed that the show is often referenced in pitch meetings at her network.</p><p>"There's a tweet by an executive I think after our first or second episode, she said, 'The amount of times 'Insecure' is referenced in a pitch meeting is outstanding,'" Oriji said. </p><p>"She said she hears it all the time. It's like 'an "Insecure" meets...' or 'it's like "Insecure" but with…' and I was like <em>wow that's pretty awesome</em> because you know, I can't speak for Issa but I know when we were making the show in the inception we were just hoping we get a full-season order."</p><p>"We were just trying to do a show but Issa is so specific about what she wants south L.A. to feel like, what she wants the music to feel like," Orji continued, "And so, I think her specificity of vision really curated and created a beautiful experience." </p><div type="image" title="Insecure" height="647" width="970" msid="88397817" hostid="261"></div><p>Alongside its hyperspecific portrait of Los Angeles and Black millennial relationships (both familial and romantic), "Insecure" is best known for its rabid social media following. After every Sunday night viewing, Twitter, in particular, is dominated by discussions about the show. </p><p>Oriji said that it was this fierce social media fandom along with one weekend at Essence Festival — an annual music festival held in New Orleans — that helped her realize "Insecure" had legs. </p><p>"We were at Essence Fest before the first season came out and we were able to just like walk through the streets of New Orleans. No one was checking for us. Issa was recognized because of 'Awkward Black Girl' [her popular web series] but 'Insecure' hadn't come out," Oriji recalled. </p><p>At that moment, Oriji said her co-star Jay Ellis turned to her and Rae and said that after "Insecure" premiered later that year, the pair would no longer be able to "walk through the streets of New Orleans without getting mobbed." </p><p>"Me and Issa were like, 'Stop playing we are just regular people. Like, it's not even gon' be like that.' After season two, we came for Essence Fest and we had to have security. It was black cars only," Oriji said. "That was when you're just like, 'Oh, things have changed.'" </p><p>The final episode of "Insecure" airs on Sunday, December 26. "Insecure: The End," a documentary special about the production of the show, will debut on HBO Max on the same day.  </p>

She has denied the allegations.</p><p>Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos announced her dismissal to staff on Thursday in a memo obtained and published by <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/paramount-tv-president-amy-powell-fired-inappropriate-comments-1128620">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.</p><p>Gianopulos's memo said <span>"multiple individuals" had complained about comments Powell made in a "professional setting". He said an investigation by the company's HR and legal departments concluded that what she said was "inconsistent with our company's values," and serious enough to warrant immediate termination.</span></p><p><span>Gianopulos's memo did not specify what Powell said, or the exact context.</span></p><p><span>However, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the source of the complaints were racially charged comments she made in a conference call to discuss a comedy series in which most actors are black.</span></p><p><span>Per the Hollywood Reporter story:</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"According to sources, the comments included racially charged language. Sources say the inciting incident occurred during a studio notes call for Paramount Network's "First Wives Club" reboot, which is being penned by Girls Trip co-writer Tracy Oliver and will feature a predominantly black cast.</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"Powell, who is said to have been a favorite of Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, allegedly made generalizations about black women that struck some on the call as offensive."</span></p><p><span>Powell has refuted the claims.
