Toyota Kirloskar sales dip 6% in April to 14,162 units

Karnataka on Tuesday banned strike by workers of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) at its Bidadi plant and directed the management to lift the lockout for resuming production soon. "I have directed the Toyota workers' union to withdraw its strike and told the <keyword id="4081652" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="company-management">company management</keyword> to lift the week-long lockout declared on November 10 to resume production soon," state Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan told reporters here. As the union and its management were in a deadlock over the strike and the lockout following the suspension of 40 workers, Narayan held talks with them at the state secretariat in the city in the presence of state Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar and the state labour commissioner. "A notification will be issued on Wednesday under section 10 (3) of the <keyword id="455743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Industrial-Disputes-Act">Industrial Disputes Act</keyword> to ban the strike by the workers and to lift the lockout that was imposed to prevent any damage to the factory," asserted Narayan. The lockout was declared after 1,200 workers resorted to a sit-in strike in the plant at Bidadi in protest against the suspension of their union member. As the strike continued, the company declared lockout and suspended 39 more workers on November 13 for refusing to withdraw their 'illegal' agitation. As the 23-year-old joint venture between the Japanese auto behemoth Toyota and <keyword id="10289535" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kirloskar-brothers-of-pune">Kirloskar Brothers of Pune</keyword> is located in Ramanagara district, Narayan mediated to resolve the standoff as he is in-charge of the adjust district. "At a conciliatory meeting between the union and the management at the labour commissioner office in the city in the evening, the company offered to lift the lockout subject to an assurance by the union that its member-workers will maintain normalcy and cordial relations in the factory to resume operations," said an official of the labour department. The union, however, is yet to respond to the company's conditional offer. Both the ministers told the TKM management to lift the lockout and resume production from Wednesday to make-up for the week-long work loss. The company has two plants in the Bidadi industrial area with 3.1-lakh units installed capacity to roll out its popular multi-utility vehicle Innova, sports utility vehicle Fortuner, Yaris and Camry hybrid sedans. The company has 6,500 employees on its factory rolls. The company also imports Vellfire from its overseas plants for sale in India. It's factories.This preoccupation crept into Musk's comments on an <keyword id="6357061" type="SPONSORED" weightage="60" keywordseo="earnings">earnings</keyword> call with analysts and investors on Wednesday night after Tesla reported a fifth consecutive profitable quarter, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-earnings-q3-2020-third-quarter-profit-2020-10">results that beat Wall Street expectations on both the top and bottom lines</a>.Unlike other earnings calls in Tesla's past — unpredictable, circus-like affairs ruled by Musk's moods and snits — Wednesday's conversation was downright plodding. But in response to a question from Baird analyst Ben Kallo, Musk dug into a theme that's been overshadowed by Tesla's struggles over the past few years: manufacturing."We're very vertically integrated," Musk said. "So we're designing and building so much more of the car than other [automakers] who will largely go to the traditional supply base and like I call it, catalog engineering." Which is why, Musk said, most new cars look a whole lot like old cars. <h2>Musk is bucking the way that cars have been built since the 1980s</h2><div type="image" title="tesla factory" height="1333" width="2000" msid="78830220" hostid="261"></div>Since the 1980s, the global <keyword id="34478" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="auto-industry">auto industry</keyword> has utilized a manufacturing model based on the "<keyword id="811995" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toyota-Production-System">Toyota Production System</keyword>," a set of methodologies developed by the Japanese carmaker giant and later integrated with a late-20th-century approach to vehicle assembly called "lean" or "just in time" manufacturing.Going lean relies on global supply chains that can produce and deliver components of relatively uniform quality to factories all over the planet. Automakers don't have to amass large inventories of parts or finished vehicles. They can dial up or dial down the system as needed, based on market demand.This contrasts with the older, vertically-integrated model that Musk alluded to. The most famous example, one by which Musk seems captivated, is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-factory-like-ford-plant-2017-8">River Rouge plant that Henry Ford opened in the late 1920s</a>. River Rogue was almost completely vertically integrated: Legend says that rail cars filled with iron ore rolled up to one end of the facility, while finished cars rolled out the other.Musk's version of this, in his wildest dreams, is what <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-revives-his-alien-dreadnought-factory-dream-for-batteries-2020-9">he's nicknamed the "alien dreadnought"</a> — a factory so heavily automated and vertically integrated that it would look like nothing else on Earth.Tesla's progress toward actually building the alien dreadnought has been halting at best. An ill-fated effort at automating the assembly of the Model 3 sedan in 2017 had to be abandoned. But Musk hasn't backed his manufacturing preoccupation."Tesla's long-term competitive strength will be primarily manufacturing," Musk said on Wednesday. "This is counterintuitive, but I'm quite confident this will be what happens."<h2>Building factories is more important than building cars</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Gigafactory Berlin" height="1170" width="2402" msid="78830223" hostid="261"></div>Tesla's grand experiment with this ambition is now underway. Since about 2010 the company has operated one factory in Northern California (which was once jointly owned by Toyota and General Motors, as a test-bed for GM to learn the Toyota way of doing things). Late last year, Tesla added a second assembly plant in China, the first to be wholly owned by a foreign company. The plant went from groundbreaking to production in about a year, a very quick process by the standards of the industry.Tesla already has a heavily automated battery factory in Nevada that it runs with Panasonic, and over the next five years, it should bring new plants in Germany and Texas online. These "gigafactories" for cars could join new plants that make battery cells and solar panels, and overall they'll provide Musk and Tesla with ample opportunity to perfect, as Musk has put it, the "machine that makes the machine."If you're weren't an established automaker and all you wanted to do was build <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword>, you wouldn't take this approach. You'd do what designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker is doing with his new car company, Fisker, Inc. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fisker-deal-with-magna-take-a-stake-in-the-electric-car-startup">Fisker just announced a deal with Canada's Magna International</a> to build the startup's first vehicle, the Ocean SUV, at Magna's contract-manufacturing factory in Austria. Fisker has the concept and the business plan, and thanks to a $3-billion merger with a blank-check firm funded by Apollo Global Management, the cash to hire somebody else to make its car. "We don't want to be a vertically integrated car company," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/henrik-fisker-billion-dollar-electric-car-company-post-coronavirus-era-2020-7">Fisker told me in an interview</a>. "We're not going to do our own manufacturing. It would be stupid for any EV startup to make a brand-new factory."<h2>Tesla has to do something radical to be worth as much as bulls expect it to be</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Model 3_4" height="1406" width="2500" msid="78830230" hostid="261"></div>To understand why Musk would take the opposite view, you have to consider seriously his manufacturing ambitions, separate from Tesla's position as the world's currently dominant EV maker. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-german-factory-online-2020-will-revolutionize-auto-industry-2020-6">I touched on this back in June</a>, when the coronavirus pandemic had thrown the auto industry into an unprecedented shutdown mode, with nobody sure how things would shake out. Even then, Musk was doubling down on his plan to create not just a new market for EVs, but a new way to make stuff."It wasn't the Model T that created Henry Ford's fortune — it was the moving assembly line that enabled workers to rapidly build the car," I noted. "It wasn't the Camry or Corolla that made Toyota the world's most valuable car company — it was the 'Toyota Production System' that replaced Ford's earlier innovation. For Tesla, it's the gigafactories that matter, more than the vehicles."If you consider Tesla's market capitalization, which at almost $400 billion makes it the most valuable carmaker in the world, and compare it with the company's actual vehicle production ( less than what Ford or GM do with full-size pickup trucks in six months in the US alone), you'd have to conclude that Tesla needs to do a lot more than make cars to vindicate investor confidence.How to bridge that gap? Imagine that the machine that makes the machine doesn't just make machines, but creates a level of vertical integration that's never been seen. Tesla would entirely own that machine-making machine and be able to leverage it to make many, many other things. For that reason, some of Tesla's most outrageous bulls, the ones who think the company could be worth more than Apple or Amazon, might be right. And with Tesla's struggles evidently behind it, Musk is now free to feed their enthusiasm.

Elon Musk's manufacturing obsession could make Tesla into an industry — and make him a 21st century Henry Ford

New Delhi, Mar 2 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Monday reported a 9.1 per cent decline in total vehicle sales at 11,356 units in February as against 12,497 units in the same month last year. In the domestic market, the company posted sales of 10,352 units last month, down 11.9 per cent from 11,760 units in February 2019, TKM said in a statement. "We have smoothly transitioned to BS-VI manufacturing and started delivering BS-VI vehicles to our customers before the stipulated deadline of April 2020. A total of 31,853 BS-VI vehicles have been dispatched to our dealerships till date," TKM Senior Vice President (Sales and Service) Naveen Soni said. In order to make the transition smoother for customers, the company has offered introductory pricing so as to not pass on the full increase of BS-VI product price at one go, he added. The BS-VI petrol Yaris and Glanza have been well received last month while the company's flagship brands Innova Crysta and Fortuner continue to do well, Soni said. "As we prepare to meet the evolving market sentiments, our efforts are to ramp up production to improve deliveries," he added. Soni said in order to smoothen the transition, the company introduced the BS-VI Innova Crysta in January this year at an introductory offer. "We have chosen not to pass on the full impact of an increase in cost to the consumers at the launch. We had to take a difficult decision, that we will not transfer the price in one go, we will have a stage-wise implementation. Having said that, in the long run, we would be forced to increase our prices in the mid-term," he noted. Accordingly, while the consumer acceptance of BS-VI so far has been positive, the challenge in the upcoming months is to see how the customers will accept the full increased pricing once the introductory offer is phased out, Soni said. Toyota Kirloskar Motor sales decline 9 pc in February

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Tuesday said its Bidadi (Karnataka) manufacturing plant has become fully BS VI compliant.
The company had introduced its first BS VI compliant petrol variant of Glanza premium hatchback in June 2019.
This was followed by the start of production of BS VI compliant petrol variant of mid sized sedan Yaris in December 2019 and the BS VI diesel variant of Innova Crysta earlier this month, TKM said in a statement.
The recent commencement of production of BS VI diesel variant of Toyota Fortuner marks the company's full and final transition into a 100 per cent BS VI manufacturing facility, it added.
Bookings for BS VI vehicles have already commenced and deliveries of BS VI diesel vehicles to customers would be made in a phased manner, depending on diesel BS VI fuel availability, the company said.
"In our efforts to make a smooth transition to BS VI emission norms for vehicles, we are delighted to announce a full compliance to BS VI well ahead of time," TKM Senior Vice President Naveen Soni said.
The company has been successful in upgrading its vehicles to BS VI technology before the stipulated timelines thereby allowing it to focus on the production and sale of BS VI vehicles, he added.
"We are confident that this will further augment customer confidence in the brand and encourage them to adopt environment friendly BS VI technology in our vehicles," Soni said. MSS

New Delhi, Apr 16 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Thursday said it has come up with a manual of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for industries to follow post the withdrawal of nationwide lockdown in the country. The maker of Innova and Fortuner said that with possibility of manufacturing operations commencing from April 20, it has devised a comprehensive 'restart manual' as a guide for industries to follow post the withdrawal of the nationwide lockdown. With an intent to support the manufacturing sector, TKM management had put together a team of cross functional experts to go into the minutest details of various operations and create an SOP that would ensure the safest possible restart to manufacturing by securing the workers from any health hazards, the company said in a statement. This manual is in consonance with the broad government guidelines that have been issued and will be used by TKM, its suppliers and has also been shared as a reference document with all Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) members, it added. The company also intends to share it with wider segment of industry through industry association platforms like CII, TKM said. "We need to safeguard business continuity and economic recovery as well by ensuring 'safety and health first' approach. In this perspective, this 'restart manual' is prepared not only for our use but also for the benefit of government, industries and stakeholders," TKM Managing Director Masakazu Yoshimura said. Post Covid-19, the industry will witness a new normal and change will be inevitable, he added. "We need to stop jobs that do not fit the needs, change procedures or the way we work and continue to navigate in these turbulent times," Yoshimura noted. Toyota hails lockdown extension, lauds govt efforts in fight against COVID-19

New Delhi, Jan 12 () Toyota Kirloskar Motor expects auto industry growth to pick up only in the third quarter of this year as consumers would try to understand the new BS-VI technology and associated cost increases when it is implemented in April, according to a senior company official.
 The company, which had recently launched the BS-VI version of its popular multi-purpose vehicle Innova Crysta, said it will be rolling out diesel variants of other models such as Fortuner by the end of this month or early February.
 "At least for the first two quarters, for the customers it is going to be understanding of the new technology. The fundamentals are strong, so by the third quarter it should start picking up," Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Senior Vice-President (Sales &amp; Service) Naveen Soni told .
 He was responding to a query on the outlook for 2020 for the auto industry in general and also for the company in the backdrop of the transition to BS-VI emission norms from April 1.
 The automobile industry recorded its worst-ever sales decline in two decades in 2019, with an unprecedented slowdown hampering vehicle offtake across segments. The overall wholesale of vehicles declined 13.77 per cent to 2,30,73,438 units as against 2,67,58,787 units in 2018.
 Soni said TKM has taken a conscious decision of not passing the entire cost increase due to the transition and absorb for sometime so as not to make it difficult for customers.
 Citing the example of the BS-VI Innova Crysta, which the company has introduced at a price range of Rs 15.36 lakh to Rs 24.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), he said,"The main challenge was that if we had passed on the entire cost to the market it would have been a real big step up...If there was a steep price hike it would have been very difficult for the consumer to understand."
 Therefore, he said, "We have passed on less than 50 per cent of the cost impact due to BS-VI to the market and taken the hit on the company side."
 However, he added, "How long can we absorb is a big question. That's why we are calling it a limited introductory offer (for Innova Crysta). If we do this for a long time, sustainability will be an issue and at the same time we do understand that the customer will find it extremely difficult if we transfer the entire amount. So we will have to watch the market."
 Commenting on the company's production plans for the transition, he said, "We have been controlling and we have to further control as we have to taper out BS-IV and bring in BS-VI.
 "Wholesales will be less this month as we don't want any of our dealers to hold inventory when we have the transition to BS-VI that could lead to fire sales and unnecessary discounts."
 While rolling out of BS-VI compliant petrol vehicles is not an issue, Soni said it was not the same for diesel vehicles as availability of fuel across India is critical because BS-VI diesel engines cannot run on BS-IV diesel fuel.
 "We are ready with the BS-VI technology for diesel cars but the challenge is of the availability of fuel. So vehicle availability will depend on fuel availability. In petrol there is no such issue. Our Yaris, Glanza and Camry models are meeting BS-VI (standards)," he said.
 On diesel, Soni added, "We have to be careful and we are monitoring what will be the fuel availability across the country. So by end of this month or early next month we will start rolling out diesel version of BS-VI."
 For Fortuner and Crysta, he said the company is also still producing BS-IV version of the petrol variants, which account for 10-15 per cent of total sales.
 "Towards the end of this month, we will start producing BS-VI version of these models as well," he added. RKL ABM

Car makers on Saturday said they closed March logging growth in their sales volume as compared to the number of units sold during March 2016. 
 Market leader <keyword id="6363602" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India-Ltd">Maruti Suzuki India Ltd</keyword> in a regulatory filing in BSE said it sold 139,763 units (domestic 127,999 units, exports 11,764 units) in March up from 129,343 units (domestic 118,895 units, exports 10,450 units) sold during March 2016. 
 
For the whole of last fiscal the company sold 15,68,603 units up from 14,29,248 units sold in 2015-16. 
 On its part <keyword id="990272" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ford-India-Pvt-Ltd">Ford India Pvt Ltd</keyword> said it sold a total of 24,832 units in March up from 21,198 units sold in March 2016.
