However, including the partial lunar eclipse, it will last for nearly <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-lunar-eclipse/super-blood-wolf-moon-to-get-star-billing-in-weekend-lunar-eclipse-idUSKCN1PC12J">3.5 hours</a>. <br /><br /><strong>What's so special about it?</strong><br /><br />The eclipse is a rare kind as it will be a blend of three lunar phenomena together — the full moon, the total lunar eclipse and coincides with the traditional January full moon.<br /><br />Total lunar eclipse — no, the sky won't go completely dark -- will rather show up a rusty red glow, called the 'blood moon.’ In fact, it's a 'supermoon’ — a full moon particularly close to earth. Indians waiting for lunar eclipse will miss the blood moon

For those on the US East Coast, the total eclipse will begin around 11:41 p.m. local time with a peak at 12:16 a.m.  </p><p>During a lunar eclipse, the moon first touches Earth's outer shadow, called a penumbra, then moves into the full shadow, called the umbra. People in Earth's Eastern Hemisphere can see the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blood-moon-in-july-will-be-longest-lunar-eclipse-in-a-century-2018-6">longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century</a> starting at 19:30 Universal Time (UT) on Friday, July 27.</p><p>However, imagine you're an astronaut who happens to be on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moon-missions-why-astronauts-have-not-returned-2018-7">surface of the moon</a> during a total lunar eclipse, and you look back home. What would you see?</p><p>NASA's <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Visualization Studio has illustrated the answer to this question with an <a href="https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4341" target="_blank" rel="noopener">animated video</a>.</p><p>To someone on the moon during a lunar eclipse, the Earth would appear to be surrounded by a bright-red ring of fire.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The image above is taken from NASA's animation, which actually illustrates the precise appearance of Earth and the moon during the total lunar eclipse that occurred September 27, 2015.</p><p>But apart from the position of Earth's continents, this week's lunar eclipse will appear more or less the same from the moon's perspective.</p><p>Here's why.</p><h2>What gives total lunar eclipses an orange-red color</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Total lunar eclipses and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-diagram-2017-8">total solar eclipses</a> are essentially the reverse of one another.</p><p>However, their appearances are very different (whether you're observing them from Earth or its natural satellite).</p><p>During a total solar eclipse, the moon passes between Earth and the sun, casting a small, dark shadow on our planet. For those watching on Earth, the ring of the sun's light surrounding the moon looks colorless because the moon has no atmosphere. (Atmospheres, similar to glass lenses, can refract sunlight.)</p><p>Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, though, and this lens-like refraction is ultimately why lunar eclipses make the moon look orange-red.</p><p>By volume, about 80% of Earth's atmosphere is made of nitrogen gas, or N<sub>2</sub>, and most of the rest is oxygen gas, or O<sub>2</sub>. Together, these gases take white sunlight - a mix of all colors of the spectrum - and <a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/publications/corfidi/sunset/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scatter</a> around blue and purple colors. Human eyes are much <a href="https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/10/131027-sunset-sky-change-color-red-clouds-science/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more sensitive to blues than purples</a>, which is why the sky looks blue and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/false-space-facts-misconceptions-2017-7">sun yellow</a> to us during daylight hours.</p><p>During a sunset or sunrise, sunlight reaching our eyes has passed through a lot more atmospheric gas, and this effectively filters out the blues and makes the light appear orange or even red.</p><p>A similar thing happens during a lunar eclipse. Earth's atmosphere bends and focuses the sun's light into a glowing, cone-shaped shadow called the umbra.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The red color is never quite the same from one lunar eclipse to the next due to natural and human activities that affect Earth's atmosphere.</p><p>"Pollution and dust in the lower atmosphere tends to subdue the color of the rising or setting sun, whereas fine smoke particles or tiny aerosols lofted to high altitudes during a major volcanic eruption can deepen the color to an intense shade of red," <a href="https://science.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Diner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">David Diner</a>, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, wrote in <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/blog/2010/12/red-red-moon-and-other-lunar-eclipse-phenomena" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a blog post</a> in 2010.</p><h2>What Earth looks from the moon during a total lunar eclipse</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Roughly 240,000 miles away at the moon, the Earth would look quite stunning during a lunar eclipse.<p>"If you were standing on the moon's surface during a lunar eclipse, you would see the sun setting and rising behind the Earth," Diner wrote. "You'd observe the refracted and scattered solar rays as they pass through the atmosphere surrounding our planet."</p><p>On the moon, you'd see the sunrise and sunset of Earth connected together in a roughly 25,000-mile loop. And on the ground around you, normally drab-gray lunar dust, or regolith, would look a bit orange-red.</p><p>Earth's color-tinted umbra is always out there - if you had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-moon-mission-falcon-heavy-rocket-experience-2018-1">enough cash and a spaceship</a>, you could fly into it anytime you wanted.</p><p>However, the moon's slightly tilted orbit means that it only passes through our planet's shadow only about <a href="https://www.livescience.com/63101-why-longest-lunar-eclipse.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">twice every 11 months</a>.</p><h2>Where and when to see Friday's total lunar eclipse</h2><p>The coming eclipse will happen during what's called a "<a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/moon/micro-moon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">micro" moon</a> - the opposite of a super moon. This happens because the moon's orbit isn't perfectly circular, so it appears larger at times and smaller at others during its roughly 29-day-long orbit around Earth. In this case, it will look a bit smaller.</p><p>North America will be out of luck during the lunar eclipse, since the moon will be below the horizon. You can still watch the phenomenon on <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/live/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a live webcast</a>, though.</p><p>If the weather cooperates, most of eastern Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia should see the full and total lunar eclipse. Scientists in Antarctica should also have a great view.</p><p>Europe, eastern Asia, Australia, Indonesia, and other regions will enjoy a partial lunar eclipse, where the moon passes partly through Earth's shadow.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The partial eclipse begins when the moon first touches the penumbra, or outer shadow, of Earth. According <a href="https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2018Jul27T.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to NASA</a>, that should happen at 17:14 Universal Time on July 27.</p><p>The total eclipse - when the moon is fully inside the red-hued umbra of Earth - starts at 19:30 UT and ends at 21:13 UT. That's a full 1 hour 43 minutes, which is just four minutes shy of the longest total lunar eclipse possible, according <a href="http://earthsky.org/?p=282841" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to EarthSky</a>.</p><p>The partial eclipse will resume immediately afterward, as the moon starts to leave Earth's shadow. However, their appearances are very different.</p><h2>Here's what happens during each type of eclipse</h2><p>During a total solar eclipse, the moon passes between Earth and the sun, casting a small, dark shadow on our planet. For those watching on Earth, the moon appears to cover the sun, with a ring of the sun's light surrounding the moon. Looking directly at that light requires special glasses to protect the eyes from the sun's brightness.</p><p>If you saw the most recent solar eclipse (full or partial), you'll remember that the circle of light looks colorless. That's because the moon has no atmosphere. Atmospheres, similar to glass lenses, can refract sunlight.</p><p>During a lunar eclipse, however, the Earth passes between the moon and the sun, casting its shadow - known as the umbra - onto <span>the moon. Earth's atmosphere bends and focuses the sun's light into a glowing, cone-shaped shadow - the umbra.</p><p>The red color is never quite the same from one lunar eclipse to the next due to natural and human activities that affect Earth's atmosphere.</p><p>"Pollution and dust in the lower atmosphere tends to subdue the color of the rising or setting sun, whereas fine smoke particles or tiny aerosols lofted to high altitudes during a major volcanic eruption can deepen the color to an intense shade of red," <a href="https://science.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Diner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">David Diner</a>, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, wrote in <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/blog/2010/12/red-red-moon-and-other-lunar-eclipse-phenomena" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a blog post</a> in 2010.</p><h2>Where and when to see the total lunar eclipse</h2><p>If the weather cooperates, most of eastern Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia should see the full and total lunar eclipse on Friday. New Delhi [India], November 8 (ANI): Today is the day when the world will witness the last total <keyword id="90051" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lunar-eclipse" source="Orion">lunar eclipse</keyword> of this year. <br /><br /> At full moon, when the moon is close to a node, total lunar eclipses take place because the earth blocks the sun's rays from reaching the moon.<br /><br /> Almost a year after the last total lunar eclipse, the sight of the moon sliding into the shadows of the Earth returns and graces the sky.<br /><br /> Viewers in North America, Central America, most of South America, the Pacific Ocean, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia will see the Moon darken and acquire a reddish in the wee hours of Tuesday, November 8.<br /><br /> When and how to watch lunar eclipse<br /><br /> The Moon traverses the northern half of Earth's shadow, with totality predicted to last 86 minutes. Mid-eclipse happens on November 8th at 10:59 Universal Time (UT), around six days before apogee, when the Moon is farthest from Earth in its orbit. As a result, during the eclipse, the Moon will appear 7 per cent smaller than it does when it's at perigee (closest to Earth), but the difference is imperceptible. Why is this? The Earth's atmosphere scatters and bends (refracts) sunlight that skims its edges, diverting some of it onto the eclipsed Moon. If you were on the Moon during a lunar eclipse, you'd see the Sun hidden by a dark Earth rimmed with the reddish light of all the sunrises and sunsets ringing the world at that moment.<br /><br /> 6. The red umbral glow can be quite different from one eclipse to the next. Two main factors affect its brightness and hue. The first is simply how deeply the Moon goes into the umbra as it passes through; the center of the umbra is darker than its edges. The other factor is the state of Earth's atmosphere. If a major volcanic eruption has recently polluted the stratosphere with thin global haze, a lunar eclipse can be dark red, ashen brown, or occasionally almost black.<br /><br /> 7. That's because the moon will set before the moment of totality - when the sun, Earth, and moon are exactly aligned and Earth's shadow completely eclipses the moon, turning it that iconic blood-red color.</p><p>If you're on the US mainland, the best place to be is California where observers will see totality at around 5:00 am, but the event will begin much earlier, at about 3 am. So, if you want to glimpse that eerie moment of the Blood Moon, make sure you know exactly when totality takes place in your part of the world so you don't miss it.</p><p>And it's not too long of a wait for the longest total lunar eclipse of the century where the moment of totality will last an incredible 1 hours and 42 minutes.</p><p>If your skies are cloudy or you're in a part of the world that won't see the moment of totality, you can still catch the whole show online. The live online observatory, <a href="slooh.com">Slooh</a>, will broadcast the event live starting at 6 am ET (3 am PT). How to see the first 'Blood Moon' total lunar eclipse of 2015 Saturday morning

<p>There is only one cosmic phenomenon that could generate this seemingly red ring of fire around Earth:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div> The answer: A total lunar eclipse, like the one happening this month on Sept. 27. Read on to learn what this red ring really is and why it's important.<p>Thanks to this <a href="https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=4341">incredible animation</a> by <a href="https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/index.html">NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio</a>, you can see what this month's total lunar eclipse will look like from a vantage point unlike any other: the moon.</p><p>If there were human colonies on the moon, this would be their version of a total solar eclipse. The difference is that instead of the moon eclipsing the sun, it's the Earth eclipsing the sun:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Although you're standing on the moon in the animation above witnessing a solar eclipse, you can still pick out the different stages of the lunar eclipse that your fellow Earthlings will see.<p>During a total lunar eclipse, the moon passes completely through Earth's shadow, which has two parts: the penumbra and umbra, labeled below:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div> Earth's umbra, which is Latin for "shadow," is the place in space where no light can reach. So, when the moon starts to pass through the umbra, it seems to disappear from view, like so:<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div> And if you're on the moon when this happens, you will be engulfed in shadow, like in the GIF below:<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>As more of the moon enters Earth's umbra, however, people on Earth will see it reappear but instead of its regular white glow it will grow a deep, sometimes blood-like red hue. Below is a photo that <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/by_photo/">Bill Young</a> took of the blood moon - as it is sometimes called - during last October's lunar eclipse:<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div> The moon turns red because Earth's atmosphere is refracting, or bending the sun's light in the moon's direction. And because blue light scatters more than red light, it is the red light that reaches the moon's surface, reflects back, and enters our eyes.<p>If the Earth had no atmosphere, the moon would turn black instead of red during a total lunar eclipse.</p><h2>A red ring of fire</h2><p>But if you were standing on the moon at this time what would you see?</p><p>The Earth itself does not turn red. Instead you would see a red ring of fire encircle the Earth. This is the atmosphere's light-bending in action.</p><p>What's more, this red ring is every single sunset and sunrise on Earth - at that moment - in one breath-taking shot because it's the light from the sun that's passing just below and above Earth's horizons, as it does during a sunset and sunrise (note how the lunar surface isn't black but red from the refracted sunlight):</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div> The same time that a Lunarian (moon-person) saw a total eclipse of the sun, Earthlings would see a total eclipse of the moon.<p>But there is one important difference for Lunarians: As long as you're on the Earth-facing side of the moon, you will see the total solar eclipse no matter where you're standing.</p><p>Anyone who enjoys solar eclipses on Earth, knows that this is not the case for Earthlings.
