The <keyword id="22667872" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mpox-outbreak" source="keywords">mpox outbreak</keyword> in <keyword id="19924003" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="africa" source="keywords">Africa</keyword> is yet another example of how <keyword id="20040661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infectious-diseases" source="keywords">infectious diseases</keyword>, perceived to be "someone else's problem", and affecting mainly poor, developing countries, may suddenly pose unexpected global threats. Other examples of <keyword id="22817243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neglected-diseases" source="keywords">neglected diseases</keyword> include the West Nile, Zika and Chikungunya viruses. Mpox was discovered in 1958 (in captive monkeys, hence the original misnomer "monkeypox") and the first human case was identified in 1970. Then, for decades it was largely neglected by the scientific and public health communities, regarded as an uncommon infection in remote rural areas in tropical Africa, without relevance for the rest of the world. When a massive mpox outbreak hit developed countries in 2022, increased research funding led to a surge in scientific studies. On just one medical search engine, there's been more research produced since April 2022 than in the preceding 60 years. The 2022-23 global mpox outbreak happened despite repeated calls from African researchers for increased global investment in diagnostic, therapeutic and infection prevention tools for mpox. The WHO has now declared the current upsurge of mpox in central Africa a <keyword id="21952478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-health-emergency" source="keywords">public health emergency</keyword> of international concern. This is the highest alert level for events that constitute a public health risk to other countries and requires a coordinated international response. Mpox's recent history is yet another reminder that an infectious disease in one corner of the world should not be regarded as someone else's problem, as it can suddenly start to spread fast and far. It also highlights global inequities in resource allocation and access to vaccines, diagnostics and treatments. These were made available in many industrialised countries and helped curb the global outbreak, but are still largely lacking in most of Africa. <h2>The 2022 outbreak: a total surprise</h2>The disease has been renamed "mpox" but the name of the virus, for now, remains "monkeypox" (MPXV). It is closely related to the smallpox virus. MPXV was considered a <keyword id="21311828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zoonotic-disease" source="keywords">zoonotic disease</keyword> endemic in parts of central and west Africa. It was acquired mainly through close contact with wild mammals, especially handling bush meat, but there was no sustained human-to-human transmission. Only very occasionally were cases seen outside the endemic areas, due to infected travellers or import of infected small mammals. This changed abruptly in 2022: a massive, rapidly evolving global outbreak caused over 99,000 laboratory-confirmed cases in 116 countries. At its peak in August 2022, over 6,000 cases were reported each week. This outbreak came as a total surprise: most cases were reported from non-endemic countries, mostly in men who have sex with men, who had become infected during recent sexual encounters. Even though most cases were clinically not particularly severe and the death toll stands at just over 200, the global outbreak was declared a public health emergency of international concern by the <keyword id="19896311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="keywords">World Health Organization</keyword> on 23 July, 2022. Fortunately, case numbers soon plummeted due to a combination of behavioural changes and vaccination in at-risk groups. Modern vaccines and antiviral drugs with activity against mpox were made available in many affected high-income countries. These had been developed and stockpiled in the US and Europe, mostly in preparation for a potential bioweapon attack using a poxvirus. The global outbreak in 2022 was caused by clade II of MPXV, which is endemic in west Africa and not as virulent as clade I MPXV, which so far has only been seen in the Congo Basin. That first mpox public health emergency of international concern was declared over in May 2023. Clade II MPXV infections are still occurring globally, but the worst seems over - for now. Complacency would be misguided, as illustrated by the current mpox outbreak that is gathering steam. <h2>Upsurge in Africa</h2>The African region is experiencing an upsurge in mpox cases, which started in 2023. As the continent which includes the areas where mpox has been endemic for a long time, Africa now presents a complex mosaic. The current clade I MPXV (formerly called Congo Basin strain) is more virulent than the clade II (west African) strain, resulting in a higher case fatality rate. The ongoing outbreak has its epicentre in South Kivu province, eastern DRC, and has the potential to fuel a large pandemic. It has a distinct epidemiological pattern with sustained chains of human-to-human transmission, often via the sexual route. It may have increased transmissibility (we don't know yet). The virus which causes it is the newly defined clade Ib lineage. It displays mutations that are the hallmark of human-to-human spread that is estimated to have been happening since September 2023. Case numbers are rising rapidly, even though many suspected cases are likely not tested and thus not counted as confirmed. Complicating matters, a commonly used test was found to miss infections with this lineage of the virus. It affects mostly adults. The case fatality rate is higher than it was in the 2022 global outbreak. Already, this outbreak has resulted in mpox cases occurring in several neighbouring countries, including some (like Kenya), with no previous record of mpox. The challenge is enormous. The eastern DRC is an area beset by multiple problems. This includes natural disasters, violence and infectious diseases including measles, cholera and poliomyelitis for the DRC. In recent years the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever took place in the wider area and, despite the availability of vaccines and treatments, posed considerable challenges. <h2>What needs to happen</h2>Equitable access to diagnostic tests, vaccines and antiviral treatments requires political commitment and financial investments. Scientific investigations are needed to learn more about exposure settings, transmission routes and clinical presentations. It's important to find the best ways to make these interventions. There is no doubt that a disease in one corner of the world can suddenly become a global heath threat. It's time the global health system woke up to this reality.

Mpox outbreak in Africa was neglected - it could now turn into the next global pandemic

Variation in genes encoding proteins involved in immune responses could be behind why some people remain asymptomatic following <keyword id="9003584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sars-cov-2-infection" source="Orion">SARS-CoV-2 infection</keyword>. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes encode these proteins used by the immune system in identifying and distinguishing healthy cells in the body from infected ones. Research has shown at least 20 % of Covid-infected do not develop symptoms, or remain asymptomatic. Critical to one's immunity and highly varied among individuals, the HLA system might have specific variants rendering them more protected against or vulnerable to Covid, the researchers in this US-Australia collaborative study wondered. Studying asymptomatic infection may improve our understanding of the features of the immune system that promote rapid clearance of the virus, the study published in the journal Nature said. To understand if an HLA variation might predispose some people to asymptomatic <keyword id="9114543" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-infection" source="Orion">Covid infection</keyword>, the researchers enrolled 29,947 individuals to participate in a smartphone-based study designed to track COVID-19 symptoms and outcomes. All of them were DNA sequenced for their HLA genetic profiling. A total of 1,428 unvaccinated individuals reported a positive test for infection with SARS-CoV-2 and 136 of them reported having no symptoms. One in five individuals who remained asymptomatic after infection were found to carry a common variant of HLA called HLA-B*15:01. People carrying two copies of this variant were more than eight times likely to remain asymptomatic than those carrying other versions of HLA, the study found. "We hypothesised that their immune system could react so fast and powerfully that the virus was eliminated before causing any symptoms. It's like having an army that already knows what to look for and can tell by the uniform that these are the bad guys," according to Jill Hollenbach, professor at the University of California San Francisco, US. In a separate arm of the study, the researchers found that individuals carrying HLA-B*15:01 with no prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2 had T cells (a type of immune cell) that were reactive to SARS-CoV-2 protein fragments sharing some genetic sequences with other seasonal coronaviruses. This finding indicated that people carrying HLA-B*15:01 and previously exposed to seasonal cold viruses had pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2 and could rapidly eliminate the virus before symptoms could present. The researchers analysed this to be because the T cells from pre-pandemic individuals, that could identify viral particles from past coronaviruses, created an immunological memory from the previous coronaviruses. These memory T cells recognise SARS-CoV-2, owing to its high similarities with those coronaviruses, and kill it very quickly. "So, even if the bad guys changed the uniform, the army would still be able to identify them by their boots or maybe a tattoo on their arms. That is how our immunological memory works to keep us healthy," said Danillo Augusto, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, US.

Scientists may have found the reason behind asymptomatic Covid infections: Genetic variation in immune system

New Delhi [India], April 23 (ANI): India reported over 10,000 COVID cases for the fifth straight day with 10,112 <keyword id="7571551" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-infections" source="Orion">new infections</keyword> in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday. The country saw a little dip from Saturday's COVID cases tally. India recorded 12,193 on April 22, 11,692 on April 21, 12,591 on April 20, 10,542 on April 19, 7,633 on April 18, and 9,111 on April 17. According to the Union Health Ministry, the country's active cases increased to 67,806 which was 67,556 yesterday. Presently recovery rate stands at 98.66 per cent, the Health Ministry stated further. As many as 9,833 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours taking the overall count of people cured of the infection to 4,42,92,854, according to the Ministry. Under the nationwide vaccination drive, India has so far administered 220.66 crore Covid vaccine doses (95.21 cr second doses and 22.87 cr precautionary doses), of which 1,947 doses were administered in the last 24 hours. The total number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours is 1,43,899, the health ministry stated. In wake of the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country, Dr PK Mishra, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister earlier chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to assess the situation. The PMO informed in a statement that the focus of the meeting was on the status of preparedness of health infrastructure and logistics, drugs, vaccination campaign in the country and the key necessary steps as a response to the recent surge in Covid cases. "Dr PK Mishra stressed that the time tested 5-fold strategy of Test-Track-Treat-Vaccination and adherence COVID Appropriate Behaviour must continue to be implemented and equally crucial to promote awareness within the community regarding COVID appropriate behaviour and caution citizens against complacency," the PMO statement read. During the meeting, a comprehensive presentation was made by Rajesh Bhushan, the Secretary of Health and Family Welfare providing an overview of the global COVID-19 situation. The presentation also provided an overview of the Genome Sequencing of different variants since January 2023 and noted the proportion of circulating variants in India. The status of vaccination was discussed, followed by drug availability and infrastructure preparedness across the country, the PMO stated. As per directions of the Prime Minister, a nationwide mock drill for the assessment of functional infrastructure was conducted and the status of the mock drill was presented to participants. Further, the expenditure of the COVID-19 vaccination programme and budget provisions for drugs and vaccine raw materials were also reviewed. (ANI)

The number of active cases has increased to 44,998, the data updated on Thursday showed. India had reported 7,830 coronavirus infections on Wednesday. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 4.42% while the weekly positivity rate was 4.02%. The active cases now constitute 0.1% of the total infections. The nationwide Covid-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.7%, according to the health ministry website. The case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19%. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease rose to 4,42,10,127. According to the ministry's website, 220.66 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country. The demand for booster doses has also gone up in the last few weeks. The country has been administering a few hundred booster vaccine shots per day in the last few weeks and there are 146 active vaccination sites across the country. Adar Poonawalla, chief executive officer of Serum Institute of India, which is one of world’s largest vaccine manufacturers, said that the company was re-starting the production of Covidshield vaccine. He said the company already has six million booster doses of Covovax vaccine available and adults must take the booster shot. "Just as a precaution, at risk we have done it so that people have Covishield as a choice if they want it," Poonawalla told PTI on restarting manufacturing of the vaccine. He further said Serum Institute of India will make 6-7 million doses of Covishield available in 90 days and it could take up to nine months to further build up the stock based on demand. The company had stopped manufacturing Covishield in December 2021. Mask mandates come back To tackle the growing number of Covid infections, state governments have taken various measures – including advising the elderly, comorbid and pregnant women to mask up. In the same month last year, the government relaxed its mask norms, and made them optional instead of mandatory. Kerala, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and more states have made masks mandatory in public places and UP has also re-started screening international travellers. Mumbai municipality, on the other hand, has made masks mandatory for all — staff and visitors at civic hospitals. It has also advised senior citizens to mask up. Kerala, Maharashtra, Haryana and Gujarat have been reporting the highest number of cases in the last few weeks. The CCSA also confirmed that Rayong province has been officially declared a zone under maximum control, following the reported infections of 36 people, 29 of whom were allegedly involved in illegal gambling activity in the downtown area. The provincial governor of Rayong will soon decide whether lockdown measures will be enforced in all or in part of the eastern province, he said. Meanwhile, a total of 4,161 have fully recovered and been discharged from hospitals, while 1,920 others are currently being hospitalised. Thailand reports 121 new COVID-19 cases

<ul class="summary-list"><li>There's no such thing as a normal type of vulva because there are so many different sizes and shapes.</li><li>The symmetry and shape of your vulva largely depend on the size of your labia and clitoris.</li></ul>If you've ever taken a peek at your vulva — the outer part of a person with a vagina's genitals that includes the vagina, labia, and clitoris — and wondered if yours is normal, you're not alone. "The truth is a lot of women don't like their vaginas. One in seven women have considered getting labiaplasty, which basically is trimming and tucking the vulva and tightening up the entrance," says <a href="http://www.drsherry.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sherry Ross</a>, MD, OB-GYN and a women's health expert with her own private practice. In fact, a 2017 report by the <a href="https://www.surgery.org/sites/default/files/ASAPS-Stats2017.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank</a> showed that labiaplasties increased by 213% from 2012-2017, indicating that more and more people were seeking cosmetic procedures to alter their vagina's appearance. It's important to note that everyone has a unique and different type of vulva, says Ross. And unless it's causing you discomfort, there's no reason to be ashamed of what it looks like or to undergo expensive surgery to reshape it. While there's no set number of vulva "types," there are many variations in the size, symmetry and color of a person's labia (or lips) and clitoris. Here's what your vulva might look like and why it's totally normal. <h2>Is my vagina "normal"?</h2>Each vagina is unique and specific to every person. So there's not necessarily a "normal" vagina shape or standard way your vagina should look. "You know the saying, 'No two snowflakes are exactly alike?' Well, the expression could just as easily refer to the vulva and vagina," says Ross. "The labia, or lips — which is where most of the issues are for the majority of female patients — vary from person to person. In fact, even the separate parts of the same vagina are not exactly the same ... this is completely normal; different is normal," says Ross. Pubic hair is also a normal part of having a vagina. Most <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-your-vagina-changes-2018-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">people</a> develop pubic hair on the area surrounding their vagina. <h2>Vagina anatomy 101 </h2><ul><li>Vulva: The outer part of your vagina is called <a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/health-and-wellness/sexual-and-reproductive-anatomy/what-are-parts-female-sexual-anatomy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">your vulva</a>. This contains the vaginal lips (labia), urethra, vagina opening, and clitoris, among other anatomy.</li><li>Mons Pubis: The<a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/health-and-wellness/sexual-and-reproductive-anatomy/what-are-parts-female-sexual-anatomy" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> mound that sits above your vulva</a> (i.e the front of your vagina) is your mons pubis.</li><li>Labia majora: These are part of the <a href="https://www.nva.org/learnpatient/gynecological-anatomy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outer lips of your vagina</a> and are usually pink, red, or brownish in color.</li><li>Labia minora: The inner folds of the vagina that sit inside of the labia majora.</li><li>Clitoris: A small bundle of nerves that sits at the top of your vagina, above your urethra, and can vary in size. Though you can't see it, the nerves that make up the clitoris actually extend farther than what you<a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/health-and-wellness/sexual-and-reproductive-anatomy/what-are-parts-female-sexual-anatomy" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> can see to the back and sides of the vagina.</a></li><li>Clitorial hood: The clitorial hood is the small fleshy covering above the clitoris</li><li>Urethra: This is a <a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/health-and-wellness/sexual-and-reproductive-anatomy/what-are-parts-female-sexual-anatomy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small hole underneath your clitoris</a> where your urine comes out of when you pee.</li><li>Vaginal opening: This opening sits in between your labia majora and minora and below your clitoris and urethra.</li></ul><h2>7 vagina variations that might resemble your own</h2>Despite what you may find on the internet, there are technically no set "types" of vaginas. "No two are the same nor symmetrical. All vulva's vary in size, shape, color, fullness and texture. The clitoral hood and size of the clitoris also vary in appearance in size, shape, and fullness," says Ross. Some common variations in shape, size, and color of your vagina might look like the following examples.<h3>Asymmetrical labia <div type="image" title="labia asymmetrical" height="1876" width="2501" msid="100533778" hostid="261" sizebytes="42620"></div></h3>Your vagina may have asymmetrical lips (meaning one of your labia is larger or smaller than the other). This is incredibly normal and nothing to be concerned about. It's normal to have your labia go past your vulva and stick out. Ross agrees, saying that porn is a potential explanation on why some feel like their vaginas are "abnormal" or "ugly." A 2015 analysis of 480 women found that 40.7% of the women interviewed said that they had some qualm with their vagina, including issues with the length and color of their labia. "Porn and social media has created vaginal insecurity which has helped move vaginal rejuvenation to the forefront," says Ross. <h2>How to change your vaginal shape </h2>While you shouldn't be ashamed of the look and size of your vagina, there are options to change its appearance if that's what you prefer. These might include: <ul><li>The size or shape of your labia may cause some discomfort during sports or other activities.</li><li>Your labia are noticeable enough in clothing that you personally want to alter its appearance. </li></ul>"The primary procedure … is called a labiaplasty. A trained plastic surgeon or gynecologist can perform this simple outpatient procedure, and the results can be life-changing," says Ross. However, according to Ross, this surgery can cause some complications like painful scarring or discomfort during sex. Ross also recommends getting a second or third opinion before you opt for surgery.What's the cost: A <a href="https://womenswellnessinstitute.com/how-much-does-labiaplasty-cost/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">labiaplasty</a> can cost between $3,000 and $8,500 depending on the doctor and what your specific procedure will entail. Sometimes insurance will cover it and sometimes not - you may want to check on your particular insurance coverage. "We believe that clinicians should include sudden hearing loss as a potential side effect of Covid-19 when talking to patients. High-dose corticosteroids are a recommended first line of treatment for SSNHL and it is important that GPs promptly refer patients to specialists as soon as symptoms develop. Even mild Covid infection can cause sudden hearing loss: Study

I was quite involved with my friends in the application process and weeding people out who aren't going to be there to contribute.You do kitchen shifts. You do cleaning shifts. You do bar shifts. I love the sense of contribution. None of it works at Burning Man unless everyone actually plays their part.It shows the best side of humanity. I think people felt a bit like "oh, bugger, it sucks for us," for a couple of hours.There are people called rangers who come in and basically communicate the main weather information about what to expect, which was very helpful because I think uncertainty is the biggest problem anywhere.They said: "look, the weather is bad. It's going to get worse. It's going to be like this two-to-three days. So you want to think about rations, you want to think about helping other people, you want to go into crisis planning mindset mode."They're ready for anything because they've gone to the desert and the fundamental thing is if you're not prepared, you die. So people bring spares upon spares of everything.We had more than enough food and water. Almost every camp has more than enough food and water to last them way beyond the burn itself because the values prepare you for exactly that.When it rains in the desert, the mud tends to cement. It was very, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ram-1500-trx-truck-goes-viral-burning-man-2023-9">very thick mud</a>. And playa dust is very alkaline. The sand itself is alkaline. You could get a cut or there could be <a target="_blank" href="https://burningman.org/event/preparation/health-safety/playa-foot/">infections</a>.So, we were like: "everyone, put on socks, put zip bags over your socks, then let's tape them up, then let's put your zip-bagged socks into boots, and then let's put big bags over your boots and tie those up."Everyone helped. We said: "here's all the bags, here's all the tape. Everyone, tape yourselves up. As long as you protect your feet, we'll be okay."You don't want to walk around barefoot. There's a lot of water. There's a lot of cables for electricity and power. So we were just like, "let's all be really careful." This isn't a situation where barefoot is best. It's a dangerous thing to do.We went around as a group to cover any cables and make sure that stuff was out of the water.We were very stylish with our bags over our feet. People were wearing bin bags. Obviously not many people have raincoats. If this had happened at Coachella, everyone would be like, "go fuck yourself, every man for himself."But here everyone was asking "how can I help you? What can I do for you?" It's a totally different attitude.Generally people were pretty calm. Everyone just left their bikes in the camp and went out on foot. Instead of the parties that were supposed to happen far away, people were just having them locally. So everyone was still able to go out and have fun.It sounds ridiculous, but someone still came and delivered me a pizza. I had three different people offer me tuna sushi.You would think that all that stuff would just stop. But actually, people were like "nope! Let's do even more of it."<h2>It took us 14 hours to get out</h2>That was bad. I'm not going to pretend like it wasn't. It took 14 hours to get to the gate of the festival. It's like two miles, a drive that would take you five minutes. There's 70,000 people trying to leave an event.I think this event was an opportunity for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/burning-man-2023-photos-rain-mud-party-black-rock-city-2023-9">70,000 people to show their true spirit</a>. When the chips are down and there's a genuine, life-threatening reality of uncertainty, everyone was like, "how can I help someone else? How can I make sure other people are okay?"I think it was probably one of the most inspiring feats of common behavior that I ever saw there, and it absolutely made clear to me what I already knew, which is this is the best city on Earth.

Social distancing, wearing masks, avoiding large gatherings and hand hygiene will be the social vaccine against <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection till the time a vaccine comes," he added. Bhushan said that the number of active COVID-19 cases were less than one-fifth of the total 55,62,663 infections in India. "We get swayed by the narrative that India has over 50 lakh cases, but we forget that nearly 45 lakh people have already recovered," the health secretary said. India witnesses more COVID-19 recoveries than new infections in the last 24 hours

Beirut, May 13 (AP) Lebanese rushed to food stores to stock up on vegetables and basic items, hours before the government reinstated a nationwide lockdown Wednesday, following a spike in reported coronavirus cases. The government called on the public to stay home for four days starting Wednesday evening and until dawn on Monday, reversing measures that were gradually implemented since last month that phased out restrictions imposed since mid-March. The new shutdown is a rare reversal and comes as many countries have started easing restrictions despite grave concerns of a setback as they seek to balance economic and health care needs. Many countries are seeing an increase in infections after loosening lockdown restrictions. They include Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus pandemic first broke out, South Korea and Iraq, which recorded on Wednesday one of the highest single day number of infections since the outbreak. Restaurants in Lebanon will close down after they partially opened 10 days ago. The country's top Sunni Muslim cleric announced that communal Friday prayers in mosques will also be halted, only a week after they were allowed to resume at limited capacity. The public health crisis comes at a particularly turbulent period for Lebanon. The country is facing an unprecedented economic and financial crisis, putting pressure on a population that is seeing its savings erode. The currency, pegged at a fixed rate to the dollar since 1997, has lost 60% of its value in a few weeks. Unemployment had been rising even before the coronavirus restrictions as economic growth and investment dropped. Officials say 45% of the population now lives in poverty. The government has asked the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance, and formal negotiations over the rescue plan led by the Lebanese Finance Minister began with the IMF on Wednesday. Lebanon began a phased-out plan to relax a national lockdown late last month that allowed small businesses to reopen, and shortened a nighttime curfew. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia said Wednesday it will go into a full lockdown during the days of celebration that follow the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan. The Interior Ministry said the lockdown would be in effect from May 23 through May 27 - days mark the Eid al-Fitr holiday that comes at the end of Ramadan. That holiday typically sees families invite loved ones over for meals and go out to eat and drink during the day. And the United Arab Emirates, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, said it will offer free coronavirus testing for all citizens, beginning next week. Foreigners in the country with coronavirus symptoms, pregnant women, those over 50 and those in contact with those who fell ill with COVID-19 also will be among those able to be tested for free. Private beaches at hotels are beginning to reopen in Dubai, even as the number of confirmed cases and deaths continue to rise in the country. In Tehran, mosques temporarily reopened Tuesday night after about two months closure, for a special night of prayers in Ramadan. A mosque at Tehran university campus in central Tehran hosted worshippers for the "Qadr," or ''Night of Destiny," a special night of prayers in the Muslim holy month. Officials in Iran had closed down all mosques and holy sites across the country in mid-March, at the height of the coronavirus outbreak, to lower the risk of the contagion.
