In the last two years, there has been a rapid rise in scams in India and a lot of people have lost their hard-earned money after trusting strangers for financial advice. Be it a fraudulent app, being added to a shady WhatsApp group, or receiving phone calls from strangers that sound too good to be true, many cases have come to light. Now, in a new incident, a doctor from Thane, Maharashtra, was misled by three Karnataka-based suspects who promised earnings via a municipal contract to supply medical equipment, costing him ₹3.84 crore. Despite investing over a three-year period, he saw no returns and reported the crime to the Naupada police, who have registered a case but made no arrests.<br /><br /><b>Thane doctor tricked by false municipal contract</b><br /><br />According to a PTI report, a 39-year-old doctor in Thane, Maharashtra was deceived by three men from Karnataka. These fraudsters offered him lucrative returns through a supposed municipal contract for supplying medical equipment. Convinced by the promise of reliable profits, the doctor began investing heavily in December 2020, making significant contributions until March this year.<br /><br />The doctor’s substantial investment – totalling ₹3.84 crore – was made over multiple transactions from December 2020 and March this year, in anticipation of high returns that never materialised. Suspicion finally arose after the doctor had seen no profits despite his repeated investments. Recognising he may have been defrauded, he reached out to the Naupada police station, who registered a case under charges of cheating. While no arrests have been made so far, authorities have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators and recover the funds if possible.<br /><br />A police official told PTI, "The man approached police after he did not get profits or any return on investment. We have registered a case of cheating but have not arrested anyone."<br /><br /><b>Ahmedabad gynaecologist duped in <keyword id="21361161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="stock-market-scam" source="keywords">stock market scam</keyword></b><br /><br /><br />In a similar incident, a gynaecologist from Ahmedabad lost ₹1.1 crore to a scam that began with a social media advertisement. Attracted by the potential for substantial stock market returns, the doctor engaged with a group promising expert tips and was subsequently added to a WhatsApp group where members shared investment insights. Through this group, he was introduced to a web link for stock and IPO investments, along with an application that required his banking details and identification documents.<br /><br />A PTI report revealed that the doctor’s initial investment of ₹50,000 yielded a profit of ₹10,000, which he successfully withdrew. This initial success encouraged him to make larger investments, transferring ₹1.1 crore through multiple transactions in pursuit of higher gains. <br /><br />When he later attempted to withdraw his funds, he was unexpectedly asked to pay 20% of his total profits. After refusing this demand, he was removed from the WhatsApp group and realised the extent of the deception. He contacted Cybercrime police in February, and after months of waiting, a formal case was registered against unknown suspects under charges of breach of trust and cheating, alongside provisions of the <keyword id="20003647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act" source="keywords">Information Technology Act</keyword>.

<ul><li>Delhi has reported a surge in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword>, with 300 new cases reported in the last seven days.</li><li>This takes the total number of dengue cases reported in Delhi to 1,229 in 2024.</li><li>There has also been a rise in malaria and <keyword id="22649903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chikungunya-cases" source="keywords">chikungunya cases</keyword>.</li></ul>Delhi has reported over 300 dengue cases in the past seven days, taking the total number of cases in the national capital so far this year to 1,229 as mosquito-borne diseases seemingly are on a slow but steady rise in the city, according to official data.<br /><br />Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023.<br /><br />As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone.<br /><br />As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year.<br /><br />Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days.<br /><br />As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed.<br /><br /><br />Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said.<br /><br />Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023.<br /><br />The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week.<br /><br />The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data.<br /><br />To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Infections during pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects such as microcephaly, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures.<br /><h2>What precautions can I take against Zika?</h2>In the absence of a vaccine, we must do our best to avoid the infection. To minimise the risk of contracting the Zika virus, individuals are advised to:<br /><ul><li>Avoid mosquito bites: Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and stay in screened-in or air-conditioned rooms.</li><li>Eliminate mosquito breeding sites: Regularly empty standing water from containers like flowerpots, buckets, and birdbaths where mosquitoes breed.</li><li>Safe Sexual Practices: Zika can be sexually transmitted, so practise safe sex or abstain if you or your partner has recently travelled to an area with Zika.</li></ul><h2>Public health response and advice</h2>Authorities have urged health facilities to screen pregnant women for Zika virus, intensify vector control activities, and report suspected cases promptly to prevent further transmission.
