The market experts attribute the cautious optimism to the approaching <keyword id="20407535" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="election-result" source="keywords">election result</keyword> date. Despite the overall cautious sentiment, there is a noticeable return of investor confidence, leading to small investments. "We expect sideways to positive markets from here on. The <keyword id="21726949" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI-dividend" source="keywords">RBI dividend</keyword> to the government will help sentiment today in India. India VIX came down yesterday. Concerns are being raised on the overall valuations of Indian markets, and especially of the small and midcap segments where many stocks are at very elevated valuations," said Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market expert. In the Nifty 50 list, IndusInd Bank, ONGC, Asian Paints, SBI Life, and SBI shares were the top gainers in the opening session. On the other hand, Power Grid, Sun Pharma, JSW Steel, Hindalco, and Grasim were among the top losers. By the time of filing this report, out of the 2,156 stocks that opened for trading, 1,418 were trading in advance, 650 were declining, and 88 remained unchanged. "Nifty is trending bullishly within a rising channel, with support at 22,500. The index is likely to move towards 22,800 in the short term, with immediate support at 22,600. A dip below 22,600 might briefly push the index towards 22,500. Any dip should be seen as a buying opportunity," said Varun Aggarwal, MD of Profit Idea. Asian markets declined on Thursday, influenced by the US Fed minutes that revealed a cautious approach to monetary easing amid persistent inflation. MSCI's Asia-Pacific index outside Japan dropped 0.57 per cent, while Australia's S&amp;P/ASX 200 index fell 0.8 per cent. The US tech Nvidia's Q1 earnings, posted on Thursday, showed a net income surged to USD 14.88 billion, up from USD 2.04 billion a year earlier, with revenue tripling to USD 26.04 billion. The US Fed minutes revealed some officials are willing to raise interest rates, unsettling markets. On Wednesday, the S&amp;P 500 fell 0.27 per cent to 5,307, the Nasdaq dropped 0.18 per cent to 16,801, and the Dow Jones finished down 0.5 per cent at 39,671.04. The US Treasury 10-year yield rose to 4.42 per cent, while the Dollar Index peaked at 105. Indian markets open flat, experts raise concern on overvaluation of small, midcap stocks

The wearables market recorded<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/fire-boltt-noise-lead-indias-wearable-market-growth-which-sees-a-34-spike/articleshow/107813888.cms"> double-digit growth</a> in 2023. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), 25.6 million wearables were shipped in Q1 2024. Wearables include smartwatches and earwear such as truly wireless earbuds (TWS) and neckbands. While a small growth has been recorded in the first quarter, the growth was hindered by high inventory carried over from the festive season in 2023. The share of offline channels in shipments increased to 37.9% in Q1 2024 from 26.1% in Q1 2023. According to the report, the smartwatch shipments declined by 7.3% to 9.6 million devices, recording the first decline in shipments since Q4 2018. The decline has been attributed to excess inventory in the online channel and fewer new launches. The ASP of smartwatches declined to $20.65 (approx. ₹1,720) from $29.24 (approx. ₹2,435). Fire-Boltt emerged as the market leader, despite a decline in shipments. Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper <keyword id="19899435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanju-Samson" source="keywords">Sanju Samson</keyword> is likely to be <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s first choice wicketkeeper-batter for the ICC <keyword id="19921630" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="T20-World-Cup" source="keywords">T20 World Cup</keyword> this year, taking place in West Indies and USA from June 1, ESPNCricinfo reported on Monday. <keyword id="19907058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishabh-Pant" source="keywords">Rishabh Pant</keyword>, who made his return to competitive cricket this IPL after a car accident in 2022, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper <keyword id="19907933" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="KL-Rahul" source="keywords">KL Rahul</keyword> and Mumbai Indians (MI) star <keyword id="19908087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ishan-Kishan" source="keywords">Ishan Kishan</keyword> are other players in contention for the spot the primary keeper-batter for the tournament. Samson is outdoing his competition, sitting at the fourth spot in the IPL 2024 run charts with 385 runs at an average of 77.00 and a strike rate of 161.08, with four half-centuries. His best score is 82*. Rahul is the fifth-highest run-scorer this season, with 378 runs at an average of 42.00 and four half-centuries, though his strike rate of around 144 is quite low as compared to other compatriots. Pant is the sixth-highest run-getter with 371 runs in 10 matches at an average of 46.37 and a strike rate of 160.60, with three fifties. His best score is 88*. Kishan, who does not have a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contract, is doing worst among all, with just 212 runs in nine games at an average of 23.55 and a half-century, but his strike rate of 165.62 is the best among the contenders. IPL form is not expected to play a huge role in the team selection. The management and selectors are believed to be excited about LSG pace sensation Mayank Yadav's pace and control, but he is nursing an injury and that may likely put an end to possibility of his getting a T20 World Cup berth. The top four had been more or less decided before the IPL, with skipper Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal set to open, Virat Kohli at number three and number one-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav at number four. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is battling with Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh. As per ESPNCricinfo, his bowling fitness during MI's matches is a concern. He bowls mostly two overs per match for his franchise in the IPL and has done very little in the league as a performer. If India were to take Shivam Dube and Rinku to the WC, they will have to leave out either a back-up keeper or a back-up bowler. It would most likely be a choice between Rinku and a back-up pacer. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could be preferred over Axar Patel as the spin-bowling all-rounder and Axar could be in the squad as a back-up. Kuldeep is likely to feature as the sole finger spinner in the squad of 15. Also, Mohammed Shami's injury has lessened India's fast bowling stocks, with Jasprit Bumrah set to lead the attack. Arshdeep Singh's left-arm pace is highly likely to be a part of Indian set-up, despite his disappointing performances in death overs. Avesh Khan from Rajasthan Royals is in contention because of his hit-the-deck abilities and height and so is Mohammed Siraj, who has not been at his best for Royal Challengers Benglaru, having taken just six wickets in nine games. Harshit Rana from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giant's Mohsin Khan have left a good impression on selectors, but their fitness reportedly not at peak could very well hamper their chances of selection. Sanju Samson likely to be India's first-choice wicketkeeper for T20 World Cup

Having last won a Test overseas over three years back, expectations are sky high from <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">Mahendra Singh Dhoni</a> and Co. to deliver in England. India are playing a five-Test series after a gap of 17 long years and the nearly six-week long Test tour will challenge the mettle of this young Indian side. For the visitors, though, there is a lot to ponder before they take the field next Wednesday at Trent Bridge. 
 
India need not look too far back in time in order to not repeat certain mistakes they have been guilty of committing, especially overseas. It was for the first time in two decades that India were humbled by a 4-0 series loss, when Dhoni and his men came a cropper against Andrew Strauss' Three Lions in 2011 and lost their No. 1 ranking. 
 
In order to move over the horrid past of their last Test tour of England, India will have to come face to face with few of the traditional problems they have been facing on overseas tours. Here, we broadly look at the mistakes that India cannot afford to make this time around. 
 
Defensive batting 
 One of the reasons why the famed Indian middle-order trio of <keyword id="2727" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Dravid">Rahul Dravid</keyword>, <keyword id="6354267" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Tendulkar">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword> and VVS Laxman were so successful in scoring big runs was due to the explosive batting of <keyword id="7567" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Virender-Sehwag">Virender Sehwag</keyword> at the top. If Sehwag would fail, the scoring-rate invariably dipped and the batsmen tended to go into a shell, giving the opposition bowlers loads of chances to apply the pressure. This tendency among the Indian batsmen continues even today. Plus, against experienced operators like <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/james-anderson/3001/3040">James Anderson</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/stuart-broad/3001/3067">Stuart Broad</a>, who are well acquainted with the weaknesses of the touring batsmen, the Indians will have to be one step ahead. This is where the Murali Vijays, Gautam Gambhirs and Cheteshwar Pujaras will have to back free-flowing strokemakers like <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/shikhar-dhawan/4001/28004">Shikhar Dhawan</a>, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/virat-kohli/4001/25007">Virat Kohli</a> and, later on, Dhoni. 
 
On the 2011 tour, the Indians managed to reach a score of 300 or more only once in eight innings. That never really made matters easy for their bowlers. This time around, the top and middle-order batsmen will have to ensure that one of the top four bats till the time the second new-ball is taken so that there isn't undue pressure on Nos. 5, 6 and 7. 
 
Where are the wicket-takers? 
 
Indian bowlers have been guilty of not being able to take 20 wickets to win a Test match. In the last 12 overseas Tests, oppositions have been bowled out just 10 times out of the 20 innings by India. This is primarily due to the absence of a strike bowler that can run through the opposition. Barring an odd spell, either by Zaheer Khan or Ishant Sharma, the Indian bowlers do not pose a stiff challenge for any batting opponent. This fact got further strengthened when the Indians were unable to bowl out oppositions in the two warm-up matches at Leicester and Derby. There will be extra pressure on the Indian seamers to get the best out of the surfaces. Spin bowlers too will have to be handled as wicket-taking options as over-reliance on pace has never been India's strength. 
 
Take your catches 
 One of the areas that the Indian Test side has struggled with off late is their close-in catching. The retirements of VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid in the last couple of years have made India's slip catching poorer. <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword> does not seem like a natural slip fielder but yet he is persisted with in the cordon. Recent overseas series losses in New Zealand and <keyword id="6355117" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="South-Africa">South Africa</keyword> were testimony to the fact that dropped catches headlined India's woes on the field. For example, a couple of chances not taken by Indian fieldsmen saw <keyword id="55681" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Brendon-McCullum">Brendon McCullum</keyword> post a record 302 that knocked India out of the last Test they played in February. Fielding coach Trevor Penney knows this and would be working overtime with the players to improve their overall catching technique. 
 
Getting the selection right 
 
A gap of almost four months since India last played a Test match and a host of limited-overs games, especially Twenty20s (World T20 and IPL) gives Dhoni extra options of making cosmetic changes to the side. One such change should be the choice of lone spin bowler. <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravindra-jadeja/4001/32004">Ravindra Jadeja</a> has been chosen over leading spinner <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin/4001/26007">R Ashwin</a> for the last three Tests that India have played. For a bowler of Ashwin's capabilities and repertoire, it is quite unfortunate that he hasn't featured in the Test XI. Jadeja had two poor outings against the Kiwis earlier this year, when he just took three wickets at an average of 85.66. Jadeja does contribute with the bat lower down the order but so does India's highest-ranked Test bowler, Ashwin. Dhoni must include Ashwin in the playing XI for the Nottingham Test, especially after the spinner voiced that he was making an effort to be aggressive in England. However, Dhoni's reluctance to give Ashwin an extended run in the two warm-up ties may yet again prove a deterrent for the tall offspinner. 
 
Regarding his own captaincy, Dhoni has shown tendency to be less proactive at times, even lacking ruthlessness that is required to close out games after reaching positions of strength. Needless to say, he will have to be at his best or else it would give his detractors more material to sharpen their knives with.
