PM Modi will inaugurate SEMICON India 2024 at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, today. Earlier on Tuesday, PM Modi chaired Semiconductor Executives' Roundtable at his residence. During the meeting, the Prime Minister said that their ideas will not only shape their business but also India's future. Mentioning that the coming time will be technology-driven, Prime Minister said semiconductor is the basis of the Digital Age and the day is not far "when the semiconductor industry will be the bedrock for even our basic necessities". The Prime Minister emphasised that democracy and technology together can ensure the welfare of humanity and India is moving ahead on this path recognizing its global responsibility in the semiconductor sector. According to an official release, the Prime Minister talked about the pillars of development which include developing social, digital and physical infrastructure, giving boost to inclusive development, reducing compliance burden and attracting investment in manufacturing and innovations. The meeting was attended by CEOs, Heads and representatives of various organisations including SEMI, Micron, NXP, PSMC, IMEC, Renesas, TEPL, <keyword id="23116584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tokyo-electron-ltd" source="keywords">Tokyo Electron Ltd</keyword>, Tower, <keyword id="19920144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="synopsys" source="keywords">Synopsys</keyword>, Cadence, Rapidus, Jacobs, JSR, Infineon, Advantest, Teradyne, Applied Materials, Lam Research, Merck, CG Power and Kaynes Technology. Also present in the meeting were Professors from Stanford University, University of California San Diego and IIT Bhubaneswar. SEMICON India 2024 is being organised from 11 to 13 September with the theme "Shaping the Semiconductor Future." The three-day conference will showcase India's semiconductor strategy and policy, which envisions making India a global hub for semiconductors. It will witness the participation of top leadership of global semiconductor giants and will bring together global leaders, companies, and experts of the semiconductor industry. The conference will witness participation of more than 250 exhibitors and 150 speakers.

This translates to almost half the workforce thriving without the confines of a traditional office setup. This stark contrast is evident when compared to regional peers: China clocks in at a mere 16%, Australia at 20%, and Singapore at 24%. Flexible work here to stay but… Looking ahead, Indian workers paint a diverse picture for the future of work. Remote work isn't going anywhere with 35% expect it to stay, while 31% predict a hybrid blend with the office. However, there's a catch: 29% anticipate increased performance tracking in these flexible models. To combat this, 39% crave complete control over their hours, tied to their output. Remote work boosts <keyword id="23080" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="productivity" source="Orion">productivity</keyword>, empowers women Interestingly, 74% of Indian respondents credit remote work with boosting their productivity. This speaks volumes about the effectiveness of flexible work models in the Indian context. 85% of all survey respondents in India enjoy working from home in some capacity, even now. The report, based on a survey of over 32,000 workers across 17 countries, paints a clear picture of India's diverse work landscape. Only 14% reported working from office daily, while 41% embraced a hybrid approach, blending office time with the freedom of remote work. This flexibility extends beyond physical location too – 43% can work from anywhere in the world, with another 42% enjoying the freedom to roam within India's borders. 76% of women surveyed, including 78% of working mothers, feel empowered by these flexible arrangements. This opens doors for greater talent retention, particularly among women, who can now navigate the often-challenging juggling act between professional and personal commitments. Furthermore, the survey highlights a growing preference for <keyword id="2700374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flexible-work-hours" source="Orion">flexible work hours</keyword>, with 27% of respondents citing it as a top priority. Interestingly, women (31%) seem to value this even more than men (25%), showcasing a shift towards work-life balance becoming a universal desire. Says Rahul Goyal, Managing Director, ADP India &amp; Southeast Asia, "Amid the global debate on workers returning to the workplace, India stands out in offering the highest workplace flexibility in APAC, showcasing India Inc.’s commitment to creating a progressive work environment. Notably, a significant number of women are leading the charge in seeking workplace flexibility.” The future also seems automated, with 25% expecting AI to eat into manual tasks. Companies must get ready to adapt, embracing flexibility, rewarding productivity, and fostering skills for a tech-driven future.

The paper titled 'Income and Wealth Inequality in India, 1922-2023: The Rise of the Billionaire Raj' said between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the rise of top-end inequality has been particularly pronounced in terms of wealth concentration. The paper authored by <keyword id="21027543" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thomas-piketty" source="keywords">Thomas Piketty</keyword> (<keyword id="21028261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paris-school-of-economics-and-world-inequality-lab" source="keywords">Paris School of Economics and World Inequality Lab</keyword>), <keyword id="21028259" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lucas-chancel" source="keywords">Lucas Chancel</keyword> (Harvard Kennedy School and <keyword id="21028262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-inequality-lab" source="keywords">World Inequality Lab</keyword>) and Nitin <keyword id="21028260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kumar-bharti" source="keywords">Kumar Bharti</keyword> (New York University and World Inequality Lab). "Between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the rise of top-end inequality has been particularly pronounced in terms of wealth concentration. "By 2022-23, top 1 per cent income and wealth shares (22.6 per cent and 40.1 per cent) are at their highest historical levels and India's top 1 per cent income share is among the very highest in the world, higher than even South Africa, Brazil, and the US," the paper said. According to the paper, the Indian income tax system might be regressive when viewed from the lens of net wealth. "A restructuring of the tax code to account for both income and wealth, and broad-based public investments in health, education and nutrition are needed to enable the average Indian, and not just the elites, to meaningfully benefit from the ongoing wave of globalisation," it noted. As per the paper, besides serving as a tool to fight inequality, a "super tax" of 2 per cent on the net wealth of the 167 wealthiest families in 2022-23 would yield 0.5 per cent of national income in revenues and create valuable fiscal space to facilitate such investments. The paper said the quality of economic data in India is notably poor and has seen a decline recently. It said India's top 1 per cent population's income share appears to be among the highest in the world "behind only perhaps Peru, Yemen and a couple of other small countries". "In terms of top wealth shares, we see that both with top 10 per cent and top 1 per cent, India comes out in the middle of the pack, with Brazil, and South Africa standing out with their extreme wealth concentration levels (85.6 per cent and 79.7 per cent top 10 per cent shares, respectively)," the paper said.
