The following has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider has verified his education and employment history.Before I entered university, I wanted to be a lawyer.I didn't manage to get into any law schools in Singapore because I didn't do well enough for my A Level examinations. Instead, I decided to go to business school, where I developed an interest in finance.However, I was given the chance to take a second degree in law after doing well in my freshman year. I took up the offer, and that's how I ended up doing two degrees as an undergraduate.Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise that I didn't get into law school earlier. I wouldn't have discovered finance — which I'm more interested in now.<h2 id="dcfe27a8-d609-42d9-b584-282e8e48f476">Landing a job from a "magic circle" law firm and an internship with a top US bank</h2>In August 2023, I received a training contract offer from one of the UK's top five law firms, also known as a "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/latham-watkins-us-law-firm-poaching-top-uk-lawyers-2024-5">magic circle</a>" firm.For most people, that would have spelled the end of one's job hunt.But that wasn't the case for me — I was also in the running for a summer internship with a US <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boutique-investment-banks-vs-bulge-brackets-2022-11">bulge bracket bank</a>. I secured that investment banking internship as well.While I could have chosen not to spend my last summer break in college interning, doing nothing just didn't make sense to me.I had never worked in a large investment bank, and I thought interning there would allow me to gain exposure. Plus, I figured that even if I did end up practicing law, I could still apply what I learned about investment banking to my future work.And I figured it wouldn't hurt to build up my network since corporate lawyers work closely with bankers on deals.<h2 id="a74530f3-7010-4cb6-a36e-b1381473b2d7">Giving up law for banking instead</h2><div type="image" title="Adrian Teh sitting at a table while using his laptop." height="2268" width="3024" msid="114752448" hostid="261" sizebytes="144966"></div>Spending my summer interning gave me a better sense of what I wanted to do.During my internship, I learned that bankers are ultimately closer to the action when mergers and acquisitions deals take place.Bankers are essentially the ones running the transaction for the clients. They drive the entire process while coordinating between commercial due diligence providers, consultants, and lawyers.Seeing this up close made me realize I didn't want to be pigeonholed into reviewing term sheets or contracts.Separately, I thought the skills one can gain from being an investment banker were more transferable. That was a prime career consideration for me. I wanted to keep my options open — so that if I ever decided to take on a corporate or management role down the road, I'd have some idea of how things work.In comparison, I thought working in a law firm offered relatively fewer exit opportunities. If I pursued that path, I could either expect to stay in a law firm for the rest of my career or eventually transition to working as an in-house counsel. So when the bank gave me a return offer to join them full-time in 2025, I accepted.Both the banking and legal fields pay well. I think the long-term earning potential I might have as a lawyer is just as, if not more, lucrative than what I'd get as an investment banker.That said, pursuing finance doesn't mean that my time at law school has gone to waste.While interning, I noticed that the managing directors are usually well-versed in the legal aspects of a deal as well. Sometimes, they would even propose and work with lawyers on contractual terms.Looking back, I'm glad I did the internship because it gave me clarity for the road ahead. For now, I'm going full steam into the world of finance.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A California judge on Monday ruled Google must open up Android to rival third-party app stores.</li><li>The outcome notably differs from a similar suit filed against Apple that was decided in 2021.</li></ul>A California judge on Monday ruled that Google must <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-app-store-android-third-party-epic-games-judge-2024-10">open up Android to rival third-party app stores</a> as part of a landmark antitrust case against the tech giant.Management and law experts told Business Insider the ruling highlights how antitrust law is being used against Big Tech companies — and could cost <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google">Google</a> billions of dollars in lost revenue.The ruling came after years of legal back-and-forth between Google and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-loses-app-store-antitrust-suit-against-fortnite-creators-2023-12">Fortnite developer Epic Games,</a> which initially filed the suit in August 2020. Epic Games argued, and a jury ultimately agreed, that Google had violated antitrust policies in its Play Store for Android devices.In December, that same jury found that the tech giant held a monopoly in its Play Store and artificially limited the reach of competitors' apps, driving up prices for processing in-app purchases. Northern District of California Judge James Donato's ruling on Monday established remedies to that monopoly: For three years, Google will not be permitted to pay companies to launch apps exclusively on the Play Store or pay them to preinstall the company's app store on devices.According to Peter Cohan, an associate professor of management practice at Babson College, the ruling could "cost Google tens of billions of revenue over the next three years" due to lost in-app payments and revenue that will go to competing third-party app platforms."In recent years, the government has been trying to countervail the high pricing power of dominant tech companies," Cohan told Business Insider. "This fits into that shift."The Monday ruling in the case resulted in a disparate outcome compared to a lawsuit Epic Games filed against <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple">Apple</a> in August 2020, which accused Apple of holding a similar monopoly with its App Store. The Apple case was decided in 2021 — and largely favored Apple, finding that the company had engaged in anticompetitive behavior in only one of 10 counts.In the Apple case, Northern District of California Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers' only remedy was that Apple could not stop app developers from informing users that alternative payment systems other than the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-app-store">App Store</a> existed to pay for in-app purchases.Eric Chaffee, a professor of business law and technology at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, told Business Insider that the Epic Games ruling — and a DOJ case against the company in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-doj-antitrust-trial-advertising-tech-market-2024-9">separate antitrust trial</a> in which prosecutors are considering asking the judge to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-search-antitrust-case-doj-remedy-alphabet-2024-10">break up Google</a> — underscores how the application of antitrust law has shifted in recent years against Big Tech companies."It seems like thinking about antitrust is evolving in the United States," Chaffee said. Historically, he said, liberal judges tended to favor <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-lawsuit">antitrust law</a> more than conservative ones. But, these days, even "more conservative justices have come around to the notion that certain sorts of breakups of monopolies are positive things, especially in regard to technology — so in regard to that, this case is one to watch."Chaffee added: "It's one of those things where we're going to see potentially odd or unexpected lineups in regard to how the court ends up approaching these types of issues."When reached by Business Insider, a representative for Google pointed to a public statement about the ruling indicating that the company plans to appeal but declined to answer further questions."The Epic verdict missed the obvious: Apple and Android clearly compete," Google's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/public-policy/epic-games-verdict-appeal/">statement</a> reads, in part. "We will appeal and ask the courts to pause implementing the remedies to maintain a consistent and safe experience for users and developers as the legal process moves forward."Alden Abbott, former General Counsel for the FTC and senior research fellow with the Mercatus Center told Business Insider he is skeptical that the injunction issued against Google will benefit consumers, as antitrust law is supposed to."Preventing Google from bidding for exclusive initial rights to host top games will artificially undermine Google's competition with Apple," Abbott said. "It may also reduce third-party incentives to invest in creating the best games in the hope of winning exclusivity. On both those counts — reduced competition with Apple and reduced incentives to enhance quality — consumers are likely to suffer."When Epic Games' case against Apple was similarly appealed, the Supreme Court denied requests to hear it, leaving Apple with its partial victory.Representatives for Epic Games directed Business Insider to a public thread about the Google ruling, posted on X by the company's CEO, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1843394692551192972">Tim Sweeney</a>."The Google Play Store injunction lasts for 3 years," Sweeney wrote. "This means all app developers, store makers, carriers, and manufacturers have 3 years to build a vibrant and competitive Android ecosystem with such critical mass that Google can't stop it."

The <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> on Tuesday said it has ordered listing of a plea challenging the verdict of the <keyword id="19905533" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bombay-High-Court" source="keywords">Bombay High Court</keyword> which had upheld a decision of a Mumbai college to impose a ban on wearing of 'hijab', 'burqa' and 'naqab' inside the campus. The high court had on June 26 refused to interfere with the decision of the <keyword id="22185170" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chembur-trombay-education" source="keywords">Chembur Trombay Education</keyword> Society's N G Acharya and <keyword id="22271323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="d-k-marathe-college" source="keywords">D K Marathe College</keyword> imposing the ban, saying such rules do not violate students' <keyword id="20068423" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fundamental-rights" source="keywords">fundamental rights</keyword>. It had said a <keyword id="42035" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dress-code" source="Orion">dress code</keyword> is meant to maintain discipline which is part of the college's fundamental right to "establish and administer an educational institution". Taking note of submission seeking urgent listing of the appeal, a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said it has already assigned a bench for the matter and that it would be listed soon. Lawyer Abiha Zaidi, appearing for petitioners, including Zainab Abdul Qayyum, sought urgent hearing saying the unit tests in the college are likely to commence on Wednesday. The top court is yet to conclusively decide the legality of such diktats issued by educational institutions. A two-judge bench of the top court, on October 13, 2022, had delivered opposing verdicts in the hijab controversy emanating from Karnataka. The then BJP-led state government had imposed a ban on wearing the Islamic head covering in schools there. While Justice Hemant Gupta, since retired, had dismissed the appeals challenging the judgement of the Karnataka High Court which had refused to lift the ban, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia had held there shall be no restriction on the wearing of hijab anywhere in the schools and colleges of the state. The present controversy stems from the decision of a Mumbai college. The Bombay High Court trashed the plea against the ban and said the dress code was applicable to all students irrespective of religion or caste. The students, who were in the second and third year of the science degree course, had moved the high court, challenging a directive issued by the college imposing a dress code under which students cannot wear a hijab, naqab, burka, stoles, caps and badges on the premises. The students had claimed it was against their fundamental right to practice religion, the right to privacy and right to choice. The college's action was "arbitrary, unreasonable, bad-in-law and perverse", the plea had said. The high court, however, had said it could not see how the prescription of dress code by the college violated Articles 19(1)(a) (freedom of speech and expression) and 25 (freedom to practice religion) of the Constitution. "In our view, the dress code as prescribed cannot be held to violate the petitioners' rights claimed under Article 19(1) (a) and Article 25 of the Constitution of India," the HC had said. The high court had also refused to accept the petitioners' contention that wearing a hijab, naqab and burqa was an essential practice of their religion. "Except for stating that the same constitutes an essential religious practice on the basis of the English translation of Kanz-ul-Iman and Suman Abu Dawud, there is no material placed to uphold the petitioners' contention that donning of hijab and naqab is an essential religious practice. The contention in that regard, therefore, fails," the HC had said. Prescribing a dress code should be seen as an "exercise towards maintaining discipline", and the right to do so flows from the fundamental right to establish and administer an educational institution under Article 19(1)(g) (right to practise any profession or run trade/business) and Article 26 of the Constitution, the HC had said. The dress code was mandatory only within the college premises and the petitioners' freedom of choice and expression was not otherwise affected, it had said.

Supreme Court to hear plea of students against Bombay HC verdict upholding ban on hijab, burqa in college

But when my daughter-in-law put her in my husband's arms, she'd drift off hearing his heartbeats. She and my son trusted us entirely.When we arrived, I was 59 and still had a lot of energy. I did everything from changing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-potty-train-children-following-the-montessori-way-2021-9">diapers and potty training </a>to cooking and taking the kids to fun places like the zoo.I'm a former teacher who ran a school in Delhi. I took pride in teaching my grandchildren their first words in English and then a smattering of my mother tongue. We introduced them to Indian cuisine, but there was also the occasional McDonalds.<h2 id="af3fe168-6ef7-46e4-b7bb-a316dc1661c9">My husband and I have made sacrifices by leaving India</h2>As for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parenting-style-break-generational-curses-raise-child-parents-2023-8">parenting style</a>, we were mostly on the same page as my son and daughter-in-law, who was born in the US. The techniques we used reflected the way we raised our son when he was growing up.It never occurred to us or my son and daughter-in-law to pay us even the smallest amount for childcare. They pay us in love. We preferred to think of their salaries going toward their future as they progressed in their careers as tech executives. It has helped them reach their potential; we're so proud they've come far.We live in a big house where everyone has their own space. We share a kitchen, though, and eat together. We celebrate all the holidays and festivals, whether Indian or American.Still, I feel I've sacrificed for our philosophy of having a village to raise children. I don't have much of a network of friends in Minnesota. Defending its 2019 law criminalising <keyword id="20415107" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="triple-talaq" source="keywords">triple talaq</keyword>, the Centre has told the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> that the practice is "fatal" for the social institution of <keyword id="19896575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marriage" source="keywords">marriage</keyword>. In an affidavit filed in response to petitions challenging the law, the Union of India said despite the top court setting aside the practice in 2017, it has "not worked as a sufficient deterrent in bringing down the number of divorces by this practice" among the members of the community. "It is submitted that Parliament in its wisdom has enacted the impugned Act to protect the rights of married <keyword id="19943278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Muslim-women" source="keywords">Muslim women</keyword> who are being divorced by triple talaq. "The impugned Act helps in ensuring the larger constitutional goals of <keyword id="20809677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-justice" source="keywords">gender justice</keyword> and <keyword id="20250318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-equality" source="keywords">gender equality</keyword> of married Muslim women and helps subserve their fundamental rights of non-discrimination and empowerment," the affidavit said. On 22 August 2017, the <keyword id="19936355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apex-court" source="keywords">apex court</keyword> had declared instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddah) unconstitutional. On August 23, 2019, the top court agreed to examine the validity of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. Violation of the law entails imprisonment of up to three years. Two Muslim organisations -- <keyword id="22278513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jamiat-Ulama-I-Hind" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind">Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind</keyword> and Samastha Kerala Jamiathul Ulema -- have urged the court to declare the law "unconstitutional". Jamiat claimed in its petition that "criminalising a mode of <keyword id="19911325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="divorce" source="keywords">divorce</keyword> in one particular religion while keeping the subject of marriage and divorce in other religions only within the purview of civil law, leads to discrimination, which is not in conformity with the mandate of Article 15".

Ann Selzer told The Register.<h2 id="3d407244-be45-430b-b98a-0cbdde720865">Trump's slim Iowa lead could point to problems in more competitive states</h2>Trump is still heavily favored to prevail in Iowa. Election forecaster Nate Silver's model gives the former president overwhelming odds to carry its six electoral votes. After all, Democrats control just one of the statewide offices.Still, the poll shows why the intense focus on the seven swing states can sometimes be detrimental. Look no further than former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the longtime Democrat who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rfk-jr-drops-out-presidential-race-2024-8">endorsed Trump</a> and abandoned his third-party run. Johnson in 1964) since it was admitted to the union.It's far more likely that the Iowa survey illustrates Trump's struggles elsewhere.The poll found that Harris performs best with voters who live in the suburbs and those with a college degree, two demographics where Trump has long had problems.The good news for Trump is that the Iowa poll shows he's doing well among rural voters and those without a college degree, two groups that fueled his 2016 victory over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.Trump and Iowa Republicans have relied heavily on working-class voters to make the state more red. And working-class voters hold considerable sway in key states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
