Stock market opens flat with a marginal decline, rangebound movement expected

The market capitalisation (Mcap) of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) surged by Rs 67,477.33 crore to Rs 15,97,946.44 crore. The valuation of Infosys jumped Rs 36,746.21 crore to Rs 7,72,023.49 crore. The valuation of HDFC Bank tanked Rs 13,064 crore to Rs 12,43,441.53 crore and that of State Bank of India declined by Rs 10,486.42 crore to Rs 7,25,080.10 crore. FMCG dipped by over 1%, while consumer durables jumped by 1.12% during the day's trade. Out of the 2,784 stocks traded during the day, 1,597 saw advances, while 1,112 saw declines. Another 75 remained unchanged. 220 stocks hit their 52-week high, while 19 stocks hit their 52-week low. 159 stocks remained in the lower circuit during the day, while 38 stocks hit the lower circuit during today's trading session. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd notes that the market traded volatile for yet another session and ended nearly unchanged. After a flat start, the Nifty gradually inched higher for most of the session; however, sharp profit-taking in the final hours trimmed all the gains. "Meanwhile, a mixed trend continued on the sectoral front, with energy, auto, and realty performing well, while FMCG and pharma lagged slightly. The broader indices continued to attract buying interest, helping market breadth to end on the advancing side. Rotational participation from the heavyweights is maintaining a positive tone amid consolidation, and we expect this prevailing trend to continue. We are targeting 25,100 in the Nifty and suggest focusing on accumulating quality stocks on dips", he continued. As per Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares, "Broader markets extended their streak of outperformance as Mid and Smallcaps advanced further with gains of 0.45% &amp; 0.86% respectively. Nifty50 has made a DOJI candlestick pattern which indicates an indecisiveness between the bulls and bears. A psychological level of 25,000 will continue to act as a strong barrier while immediate support is placed at 24,800 followed by 24,660". Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst - Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One Ltd highlights that the Indian equity markets opened the session steadily, drawing insights from mixed global cues. The benchmark index gradually gained momentum post the initial opening hour and made strides towards the last swing high. However, the bears made a comeback at the highs, leading to a modest correction. Despite multiple efforts, the bulls were unable to challenge the record high, and the day ultimately concluded on a flat note. "Technically, the 25,000 milestone withholds the daunting task for the bulls, and a sustainable breakthrough could only direct the next leg of the rally in the index. On the lower end, 24,600 is likely to be seen as intermediate support, followed by the sacrosanct demand at the 24500 zone in the comparable period. The advance-decline ratio continues to highlight the dominance of the bulls, particularly in the mid and small-cap segments, which bodes well for market sentiments. Thus, one needs to focus on such themes for having an outperformance while the key indices are witnessing some timidness at their pivotal zones", continued Krishan.

Stock market closing: Sensex, Nifty close in green with marginal gains, Titan, NTPC, BPCL amongst top gainers

On the other hand, Nifty ended on 24,345.85, down by 0.09% on August 12, 2024. <keyword id="19923397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ONGC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ONGC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ONGC">ONGC</keyword> (up by 2.59%), Hero Moto Corp (up by 2.15%), Axis Bank (up by 1.80%), JSW Steel (up by 1.53%) and Divis Labs (up by 1.46%) were amidst the top <keyword id="22759564" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gainers" source="keywords">gainers</keyword> of the day. Most midcap and small cap market indices managed to inch up marginal gains, with the exception of India VIX, which rose by 3.47%. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares noted that Indian markets started the session on a tepid note followed by a steep recovery. After a rangebound mid-session, a sudden fall in the last session dragged the Index lower to end the session at 24,347.00 with a loss of 20.50 points. "Realty was the top gainer among the sectors followed by Metal; and on the flip side, Media and PSU Banks were the major laggards. Mid and small caps held their recovery gains and outperformed the frontline index. After testing the higher end of a consolidation, the Index has formed a Long Legged DOJI candlestick pattern. A firm close above the 24,450-24,470 zone is a must to resume its uptrend while the lower side seems to be protected at 24,200", he continued. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities highlighted that today, the benchmark indices witnessed volatile trading session, the Nifty ends 21 points lower while the Sensex was down by 57 points. Among sectors, reality index outperformed rallied over 1.35% whereas media index shed nearly 2%. Technically, after early morning intraday selloff the market took the support near 24,200/79,200 and bounce back sharply. However, it failed to close above 24,400/79,850 resistance zone. "We are of the view that, the current intraday market texture is non-directional hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy for the day traders. For the bulls, 24,400/79,850 would be immediate breakout zone. Above the same, market could move up to 24,500-24,550/80,100-80,400. On the flip side, below 24,300/79,500 the sentiment could change. Below the same market could retest the level of 24,200-24,170/79,200-79,000", he continued.

Stock market closing: Sensex, Nifty register muted gains to close the day in red, ONGC, Hero Moto top gainers

Mumbai: Indian stock markets rallied on Monday after the <keyword id="20032950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP-led-government" source="keywords">BJP-led government</keyword> secured a majority in the latest state elections in Maharashtra. The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index gained more than 1.45 per cent or 346.30 points to open at 24,253.55 points, while the BSE <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> index surged 1,076 points or 1.36 percent to open at 80,193.47 points. Experts noted that the election results have an impact on the markets today, and if past trends are followed, the markets may witness some rally amid the return of the BJP in the Maharashtra state elections. <keyword id="20161891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Bagga" source="keywords">Ajay Bagga</keyword> Banking and Market Expert stated that "The just concluded elections in Maharashtra, the results of which were declared on November 23rd, will have a positive immediate impact on the stock markets. The landslide win for the BJP lead coalition in the Maharashtra state elections could lead to a short-term boost to the Indian stock markets which have been in a declining mode" He further added "Investors will interpret this mandate as favourable for the capex and infrastructure push that is ongoing in Maharashtra. The beneficiary sectors of this election are industrials, infrastructure, manufacturing, real estate and financials". In the sectoral indices on the National Stock Exchange, <keyword id="20065014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-Realty" source="keywords">Nifty Realty</keyword> and <keyword id="19941314" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-PSU-Bank" source="keywords">Nifty PSU Bank</keyword> rallied with a surge of more than 2 percent, while other major indices also gained more than 1.5 per cent, including Nifty Metal, Nifty Media, and Nifty Oil &amp; Gas. In the Nifty 50 list, 49 stocks gained during the opening session, while only one stock declined. Shri Finance opened as the top gainer in the Nifty 50. The shares of the AdGroup also surged around 2 percent at the time of filing this report. <keyword id="19967296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Green" source="keywords">Adani Green</keyword> also climbed around 4 percent. "We are most likely to break the falling 20-day average that lies at 24,030, which will be the first time that'd happen since the record high of 27th September. Seasonality trends between now and the end of the year have been historically positive, with the Nifty rising 80% of the time during this period with an average return of over 4 per cent" Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities. In other Asian markets, Japan and South Korea indices rallied. The Nikkei 225 index surged more than 1.5 percent, South Korea's Kospi also rose by 1.5 percent, Taiwan's Weighted Index was up by 0.48 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down marginally by 0.14 percent at the time of filing this report.

Nifty, Sensex rallied around 1.5 % after Maharashtra election results, Experts noted short term rally

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A number of bank research desks have raised their S&amp;P 500 price targets in recent weeks.</li><li>The adjustments come as the index continues its bull market run, up 3% in the last month and 23% this year.</li></ul>The bull market hasn't weakened in the fourth quarter, and top bank research desks have been rushing to raise their S&amp;P 500 price targets into year-end. Strategists from Goldman Sachs, UBS, BMO, and Deutsche Bank have raised their year-end price targets on the S&amp;P 500 in recent weeks as the benchmark index continues to hit record highs. On Monday, it notched its 46th all-time high of 2024. UBS strategists Jonathan Golub and Patrick Palfrey upped their 5,600 price target to 5,850 for the end of the year, marking their fourth upgrade since late last year.The target is just slightly above the level the index is trading at on Wednesday, but the analysts forecast a 9% rise in the next 15 months and raised their target for 2025 from 6,000 to 6,400 in a note on Tuesday. Earlier this month, meanwhile, Goldman Sachs raised its target on the index to 6,000 by December, marking the fourth increase since late last year. The call, from the firm's chief equity strategist David Kostin, is the second highest among those tracked by Bloomberg.Kostin said the estimates were driven by a steady macro outlook and greater margin expansion."The primary driver of the upward revision to our 2025 EPS estimate is greater margin expansion," Kostin said, adding, "The macro backdrop remains conducive to modest margin expansion, with prices charged outpacing input cost growth."Kostin's price target is just behind that of BMO's chief equity strategist, Brian Belski, who raised his forecast from 5,600 to 6,100 last month. Belski's new target implies a nearly 5% gain through the rest of this year.Belski said his upgrade was based on strong market gains so far this year, which he says typically leads to stronger-than-normal gains in the fourth quarter."We continue to be surprised by the strength of market gains and decided yet again that something more than an incremental adjustment was warranted," Belski said in a note.He added that Federal Reserve easing and a broadening market rally will only help fuel further gains.Deutsche Bank also raised its year-end target for the S&amp;P 500 last month, up to 5,750 from 5,500. The bank's strategists pointed to strong corporate earnings and inflows, rising stock buybacks, and higher risk sentiment."We see S&amp;P 500 earnings growth continuing to run robustly in the low double digits, in line with typical growth rates outside of recessions," the strategists said in a note.The strategists' target raises come amid a chorus of strategists turning decidedly more upbeat on the market. JPMorgan's chief equity strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/wall-street-biggest-bear-jpmorgan-stock-market-outlook-interest-rates-2024-10">recently recommended</a> investors should get less defensive after a strong September jobs report."While it is too soon to assume that this is a turning point, it does suggest that a recession is unlikely in the near term, especially since surprisingly strong job growth and a downtick in the unemployment rate broke a slowing trend in the job market," he said in a note earlier this month.Lakos-Bujas kept his 4,200 price target for the S&amp;P 500 unchanged, though.The more upbeat 2024 forecasts come as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-bull-rally-anniversary-earnings-interest-rates-sp500-2024-10">bull market charges on</a>, with the S&amp;P 500 up 3.2% in the last month and 22.6% this year. Several risks persist, though, with the upcoming US presidential election in November, an unclear trajectory of monetary policy easing from the Fed as economic data comes in mixed, and as war in the Middle East continues to threaten stability in the region and beyond."Fiscal and monetary policy uncertainty, and potential election outcomes, make 2025 returns far from certain," UBS analysts said.

Top Wall Street analysts are boosting stock market forecasts as the bull market charges on

Foreign investors have withdrawn nearly Rs 20,000 crore from Indian stock markets in just five trading days (November 4–8), continuing a trend of large-scale selling that began last month. Experts say investors are now moving their money to China, largely due to the high valuations presently prevailing in Indian markets. In early November, FPIs have offloaded as much as Rs 19,994 crore in Indian markets. The month prior, i.e., October, was one of the worst months in terms of foreign outflows, with FPIs making a net withdrawal of Rs 94,017 crore. Before this, Indian markets faced such a situation during the pandemic, when FPIs withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. <h2>Why Are Investors Leaving? </h2>According to Himanshu Srivastava of Morningstar Investment Research India, two main factors are driving this exodus. First is China's renewed appeal due to lower stock valuations and new economic stimulus measures. In a bid to nudge the domestic economy and bail state governments, China recently approved a 10-trillion yuan (US $1.4 trillion) package. Per reports, approximately 60% of this stimulus focuses on allowing local governments to refinance the mountain of debt on them. Srivastava explains foreign investors are also flocking to US dollar and Treasury yields, which have appreciated significantly in the recent past, leading FPIs to anticipate a stronger US economy going ahead. Moreover, high valuations in Indian markets are discouraging foreign investors from putting more money in the economy. As a result, over the past week, the selling pressure eroded Rs 74,563 crore in market value for Reliance Industries, while Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank lost Rs 26,274 crore and Rs 22,254 crore, respectively. The combined market valuation of six of the top 10 most-valued firms dipped by Rs 1,55,721.12 crore last week. <h2> Silver linings</h2>Despite the ongoing outflux of funds since last month, November also saw unprecedented applications of about 40–50 new FPI registrations, which are eyeing to enter the Indian market. This was due to markets SEBIs recent relaxation to NRIs, permitting them to participate up to 100% and announcing measures for ease of entry and operations in India. On the other hand, FPIs invested Rs 599 crore in the debt general limit and Rs 2,896 crore in the debt voluntary retention route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs have invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market. <li class="whitespace-normal break-words"></li>Going ahead, investors will be looking for certain macroeconomic cues, which include corporate earnings reports, India's inflation (CPI) and industrial production (IIP) data on November 12, the US inflation report on November 13, and wholesale price index (WPI) data on November 14.

FPIs withdraw nearly Rs 20,000 crore from equities in the last 5 trading sessions, make a beeline for China and US

Benchmark indices <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> and Sensex recovered from their losses last week to close in greens on Monday. While Sensex inched up over 690 points to close at 79,476.63 points, Nifty closed the day over the 24k mark, at 24,213.30, up by 217 points. During the day, Sensex had soared 740.89 points, or 0.94%, to touch 79,523.13 points. From the 30-share Sensex pack, JSW Steel surged nearly 5% while Tata Steel jumped nearly 4%. Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and UltraTech Cement were also among the big gainers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Lupin, Britannia, and Infosys were among the major laggards on Sensex. On Nifty, where 39 stocks advanced during the day and the remaining 11 saw declines, Tata Steel, Hindalco, and JSW Steel were among the top gainers. Adani Ports, ITC, Bharti Airtel, and Asian Paints were among the leading laggards. In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory, while Seoul ended lower. Yesterday, the BSE benchmark tumbled 941.88 points, or 1.18%, to settle at 78,782.24, the lowest closing level since August 6. The Nifty had also tanked 309 points, or 1.27%, to close at 23,995.35. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued with their hefty exodus, offloading equities worth Rs 4,329.79 crore today, according to exchange data. So far in November, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have put in Rs 2,558.75 crore in Indian markets. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.60% to $75.53 a barrel today. <h2>Banks, metals lead the party</h2> Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, explains that while bears dominated the first half of trading session by dragging the index lower; it was the banking counters that led to a sharp up move and pushed the index higher from its previous session's low. The Metal stocks also joined the party and pushed the index further higher to end the session at 24,213.30 with gains of 217.95 points. Mid and smallcaps also advanced but underperformed the frontline index", he added. Today's rally was largely led by banking scrips. The BSE Bankex jumped a staggering 1,218.58 points during the day. On NSE, both banks and financial services indices inched up by 1.94% and 1.98% respectively during the day. While PSU bank counters were up by 1.84%, private banks surged ahead with a 1.94% growth during the day. Metals were amidst the highest gainers, rising 2.84% during the day. All broad market indices closed the day in green, except for India VIX, which tumbled 4.08%.

Sensex, and Nifty rebound to greens, metals and banks lead the rally on bourses today

Asian Paints and LTI Mindtree are expected to release their Q1FY25 results tomorrow. Amidst broad market indices, Nifty Next 50, 100, 200 and 500 closed in red. Most <keyword id="46258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="midcap" source="Orion">midcap</keyword> and <keyword id="1885976" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-cap-indices" source="Orion">small cap indices</keyword> closed the day in green. Amidst sectoral indices, bank, financial services, <keyword id="6354777" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="media" source="Orion">media</keyword>, metal, healthcare, oil and gas, pharma, PSU and private banks closed the day in red. <keyword id="6384816" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="realty" source="Orion">Realty</keyword> inched up by 1.66% during the day, while media fell 1.03%. Mr. Aditya Gaggar Director of Progressive Shares noted that the index oscillated in a tight range of 24,600-24,650 and finally settled at 24,613.00 with gains of 26.30 points. "On a sectoral front, realty was the top gainer followed by FMCG and IT while media corrected the most. Profit booking led correction was witnessed in the Pharma segment. Despite the muted performance by mid and small caps, stock-specific buying was observed", he said. Out of the 2,772 stocks traded, 1,403 saw advances, while 1,283 declined. Another 86 remained unchanged. 156 stocks hit their 52-week high, while 15 stocks also touched their 52-week low. 124 stocks hit the upper circuit during trading today, while 78 stocks hit the lower circuit as well. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities highlights that the short-term texture of the market is still positive. Currently, the market has witnessed narrow range activity at higher levels, which Chouhan sees as traders waiting for either side breakout. "For the bulls now, 24,665/80,900 would be the immediate breakout level. Above which, the market could rally up to 24,750-24,775/81,200-81,300. On the flip side, we could see one quick intraday correction if the index slip below 24,550/80,500. Below which, it could retest the level of 24,500/80,300. Further down side may also continue which could drag the market till 24,425/80,000", he explained.

LTI Mindtree (up by 3.48%), ONGC (up by 2.99%), Wipro (up by 2.41%), Bajaj Finserv (up by 2.39%) and TCS (up by 2.84%) were amongst the top gainers of the day. On the other hand, Hero Moto Corp (down by 1.49%), Coal India (down by 1.48%), Asian Paints (down by 1.40%), Grasim (down by 1.25%) and Bajaj Auto (down by 0.86%) were amongst the leading laggards. Amongst broad market indices, Nifty next 50 closed in red, down by 1.09%. Nifty smallcap 100 dipped by 1.22%, while smallcap 250 shed 1.11% and smallcap 400 lost 1% during the day. Infosys saw a 7.1% YoY rise in its net profit, taking it to Rs 6,368 crore. The company's revenue from operations also jumped up 3.6% YoY to reach Rs 39,315 crore. On the other hand, Persistent recorded $328.2 Million as revenue for Q1 FY25, witnessing a 16% YoY and 5.6% QoQ growth. As for Tata Communications, the company's Q1 net profit dipped 13% to reach Rs 333 crore. However, its revenue for the quarter was up 18%, at Rs 5,633 crore. <h2> Expert outlook</h2>Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst, Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One Ltd noted that the Indian equity market experienced a remarkably positive trading day, with the Nifty50 benchmark index reaching a new milestone of 24,800. Despite initial concerns caused by weak global cues, the market demonstrated resilience and confidence as the day progressed. The latter half of the session saw a strong upward movement, and the Nifty soared to settle at the 24,800 mark, securing a gain of 0.76% "As far as levels are concerned, the 24,500 is now expected to provide strong support, before which some cushioning to upcoming blips could be seen around the 24,650 subzones. On the higher end, it's challenging to anticipate the exact resistance zone, but achieving the milestone of 25,000 is now seen as a significant target for the bulls, especially in the context of the pre-budget rally", he continued. Aditya Gaggar Director of Progressive Shares noted extreme volatility in the morning trade today, as index swung on both sides. "On a sectoral front, media was the top loser by ending the day with a loss of over 3% followed by metal. Recovery was seen in the broader markets as well but not enough to outperform the frontline index as mid and smallcap shed by 0.96% &amp; 1.22% respectively. By engulfing the previous candle, the Index has formed a big green candle which implies a strong comeback of bulls and now the psychological level of 25,000 will be considered as an immediate hurdle while on the lower side, 24,500 will serve as strong support", he highlighted. As Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd notes, "Markets have been inching higher as expected, driven by rotational buying in heavyweight stocks. We are now eyeing the new milestone of 25,000 in the Nifty. However, the recent underperformance of the broader indices is tempering the overall buoyancy. Amid these mixed signals, we reiterate our recommendation to focus on stock selection and prefer hedged positions, given the anticipated rise in volatility due to the upcoming Union Budget and ongoing earnings season".

Most small and mid cap indices ended the day in red, while India VIX dipped 4.40% during the day. Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 100 were the only broad market indices that closed the day in green. Amidst sectoral indices, IT inched up by over 1%, while media and metal lost over 1% each during the trade. Said Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, "The markets remained lackluster and closed flat, taking a pause after Tuesday’s decline. Following a subdued start, the Nifty traded within a narrow range and ultimately ended at the 24,143 level. Sector-wise, metal and pharma stocks were the top losers, while resilience in the IT sector helped limit the overall decline for the second consecutive session. The broader indices also slipped, losing over half a percent each". "With no major domestic triggers, participants are now looking to global markets for direction. An intermediate recovery in the US markets is providing some relief, but ongoing pressure in select heavyweight stocks across sectors is limiting the recovery. In light of the uncertain outlook, we recommend maintaining a cautious stance and adopting a hedged approach until there is more clarity on the market’s next move", continued Mishra.
