<ul class="summary-list"><li>The S&amp;P 500 communications services sector has started 2023 as the top-performing group on the broad index. </li><li>The sector that's home to Meta, Netflix and Match has picked up 12% after sliding 40% last year. </li></ul>The communications services group has emerged as the S&amp;P 500's best-performing sector in early 2023, highlighting the shift in market leadership after stocks sank into a bear market last year. The <a href="https://www.barchart.com/stocks/indices/sp-sector/telecom-services?viewName=performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">S&amp;P 500 communications services sector</a> has gained more than 12% since trading in the new year began. Most of the group's constituents have been rebounding. Early winners include <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/wbd-stock">Warner Bros Discovery</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nflx-stock">Netflix</a> as shares have soared by 50% and 23%, respectively. The upswing in the sector that hosts communication and media companies arrived after it sank 40.4% in 2022. It was the worst performer of the S&amp;P 500's 11 groups last year. Investors have been bargain-hunting after the sector was hammered down by a mix of macroeconomic headwinds and company-specific issues. The prospect of high inflation hurting consumer spending contributed to stock losses last year for Netflix and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/mtch">Match</a>. The parent of Tinder and other dating sites tumbled 69% in 2022 but it has picked up 23% in 2023. And Facebook parent <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/meta-stock">Meta</a> has jumped 18% after losing more than 60% last year. Meta and Match were among the top 10 biggest losers on the S&amp;P 500 in 2022.The rotation in market leadership is also on display in the consumer discretionary, information technology, and real estate sectors, among others. Gains in 2023 for those groups range between 9% and nearly 7%. By contrast, the S&amp;P 500 consumer dictionary sector fell 37.6% last year, the second-worst performance on the broad index. "While much of the communication services sector has experienced gains in 2023, the three-week rally has done little to remedy substantial market capitalization losses since the end of 2021," S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence said Tuesday. The group's five largest companies have lost about $1.4 trillion in market cap since the end of 2021, it said.

The spike in oil demand comes as travel heats up over the summer months, and as economies continue to bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.Supply constraints in the oil sector are also two pronged, as Russia's invasion against Ukraine has led to Western sanctions against Russian oil, and as US energy companies pulled back investments into oil production for years. The US oil rig count is still just one-third of what it was at its peak in 2014, according to data from <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bkr-stock">Baker Hughes</a>. This supply and demand dynamic has led to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price?type=wti">WTI crude oil</a> prices surging to their highest level in years, having hit a high of $119.98 per barrel in Tuesday trades. That's just 18% below its record of $147 per barrel reached in 2008, which <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-selling-resume-oil-prices-approach-2008-highs-2022-5">one technical analyst thinks it will reach later this year.</a>Higher oil prices means higher profits for energy companies, and it's showing in their stock prices. The energy sector has seen revenue grow 14% in the first-quarter of 2022, while its profits soared 268% over the same time period, according to <a href="https://advantage.factset.com/hubfs/Website/Resources%20Section/Research%20Desk/Earnings%20Insight/EarningsInsight_052722.pdf">data from FactSet.</a> In fact, the energy sector has been the largest contributor to year-over-year earnings growth for the S&amp;P 500.If the energy sector were excluded, the blended earnings growth rate for the S&amp;P 500 would fall to 3.2% from 9.2%, according to <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/fds-stock">FactSet</a>, even though the energy sector represents just 5% of the index. As long as oil prices remain high, profits for oil and gas companies should continue to rise, which in turn should help drive the ongoing surge in oil stocks.

Starting off the session confidently, the BSE gauge further strengthened its gains as the morning trade progressed and was trading at 58,593.26, showing a rise of 339.44 points or 0.58 per cent. Likewise, the <keyword id="372424" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="Orion">NSE Nifty</keyword> rose 108.90 points or 0.63 per cent to trade at 17,462.95 in opening deals. The 30-share index surged 320.31 points or 0.56 per cent to 57,740.55 in the opening trade. In the previous session, the 30-share equity benchmark settled 295.93 points or 0.52 per cent higher at 57,420.24, and Nifty recovered 82.50 points or 0.49 per cent to 17,086.25. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital market, as they sold shares worth Rs 1,038.25 crore on Monday, according to stock exchange data. "If the market's ability to discount the future turns right, the global economy is likely to clock decent growth in 2022," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. The resilience of the US market (S&amp;P 500 registered its 69th record high yesterday) and the spike in crude are indications that the Omicron variant, though surging, is unlikely to impact economic activity in any meaningful way, he noted. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Hong Kong were trading with losses in mid-session deals, while Seoul and Tokyo were positive. Stock exchanges in the US ended with strong gains in the overnight session.
