It would also vault the company closer to the heights of Elon Musk's SpaceX, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-27/spacex-tender-offer-said-to-value-company-at-record-210-billion">reported to be valued at $210 billion</a>, and TikTok's parent company ByteDance, said to be worth <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=bi-auto-72618-20&amp;h=d6526000041c3d8846f1b96b69e32542518d001aee4779ac478a86218d77b5a8&amp;postID=66e2daa378044123bec31ab8&amp;postSlug=openai-funding-talks-ai-race-survival-expensive-2024-9&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theinformation.com%2Farticles%2Fbytedance-increases-share-price-in-latest-employee-buyback">almost $230 billion.</a>It's a sign of just how far OpenAI has come since November 2022, when its CEO Sam Altman described ChatGPT as <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/sama/status/1598038817126027264">"an early demo of what's possible."</a> It's also a sign of just how expensive the business of training and running AI models is getting.<h2 id="93715070-5d0b-4d1f-8ac9-519c79ee7179">Generative AI is a cash-guzzler </h2><div type="image" title="OpenAI CEO Sam Altman." height="768" width="1024" msid="113296071" hostid="261" sizebytes="28470"></div>It was only last year that OpenAI revealed that it had secured a $10 billion investment from Microsoft in a deal that extended a partnership first struck in 2019.Back then, in January 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://openai.com/index/openai-and-microsoft-extend-partnership/">OpenAI said</a> it had already worked with Microsoft to "build multiple supercomputing systems" — powered by the tech giant's cloud platform Azure — that could be used to train its models. OpenAI said it would deploy that $10 billion investment to further boost these systems.However, as the generative AI boom has progressed since <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">OpenAI launched ChatGPT</a> in late 2022, it has become increasingly evident that making the large language models behind generative AI applications smarter — a fundamental goal — is an expensive endeavor.Just look at the spending of Big Tech firms working to improve their AI models. In the last quarter alone, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft saw capital expenditure hit $52.9 billion — almost double what it spent in the same quarter in 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/artificial-intelligence-investing-charts-7b8e1a97?mod=tech_trendingnow_article_pos2">per The Wall Street Journal.</a>Much of that has been directed toward assets critical for strengthening their AI plays, such as buying expensive chips from the likes of Nvidia and building new data centers to host these chips for training and inference purposes.While privately held startups working on large language models, or LLMs, aren't in the business of building data centers like Big Tech's cloud players, they have been busy trying to secure as many powerful chips as they can. This is to ensure they have enough computing power to build their next-generation models.Industry projections note just how expensive this is going to get. Earlier this year, Dario Amodei, CEO of OpenAI rival Anthropic, noted that it<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anthropic-ceo-cost-10-billion-train-ai-years-language-model-2024-4"> could cost $10 billion to train AI models </a>within the next two years. Pretty soon, that could hit $100 billion.This is a tricky situation for startups, of course, given that they don't have quite the same deep pockets as their publicly traded counterparts. Their traditional funding sources in venture capital may not suffice.According to Bloomberg, OpenAI has lined up blue-chip names, including Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia as potential backers for its upcoming investment round, alongside lead investor Thrive Capital. That raises the bar for the handful of startup competitors it faces.Amodei's Anthropic seemed to have got the memo, as it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/amazon-anthropic-ai-investment">raised $2.75 billion from Amazon</a> in March, taking its total raised from the Big Tech firm to $4 billion. It was last valued at $18.4 billion.<div type="image" title="Dario Amodei Anthropic" height="5179" width="5179" msid="113296069" hostid="261" sizebytes="2214932"></div>OpenAI's top Europe rival, Mistral, raised fresh capital at a $6.2 billion valuation in June, with its funding round peppered with big corporate names such as Nvidia and Samsung, alongside VC heavyweights such as A16z and Lightspeed.It remains to be seen which companies will stay the course in the long term. Consolidation has struck the AI industry in recent months, as some top startups trying to build AI models have been gutted.In August, for instance, news emerged that Google had hired Character AI CEO Noam Shazeer — a former Googler — along with top talent, and secured a licensing agreement for its LLM technology.As <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dealmaking-for-ai-startups-silicon-valley-2024-8">my colleagues Ben Bergman and Sri Muppidi noted last month</a>, the startup's growth "has not been blockbuster and revenue is minimal." As a result, it "did not have enough momentum to raise another big round in today's ultracompetitive funding environment."This looks to be the key challenge going forward for startups seeking to get an edge in the LLM space and cut into OpenAI's lead, especially as profit remains a distance away. OpenAI's annualized revenue is on track to be $3.4 billion this year, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-is-actually-winning-despite-all-the-openai-drama-2024-6">report said in June</a>, though it's not yet profitable.In a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/6y4tyxlECRD3NVQMHNoMvM?si=cbe2f641189142ff">recent episode of the No Priors podcast</a>, tech investor Elad Gil suggested that "enormous capital moats are emerging" among startups looking to scale their LLMs to the biggest scale. The goal for many, of course, is AI that is as intelligent as humans."Everybody's partnering up, and so it's a really interesting question to ask," Gil said. "For all the other players in the market, where are they going to get these ever-rising amounts of capital, and who do they partner with?"AI startups serious about progressing on LLMs will need to figure out the answer to this pretty quickly. Failure may lie ahead if they don't.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Family offices can pay six-figure salaries but require intense dedication.</li><li>Selecting candidates often boils down to a "personality fit," recruiters said.</li></ul>People who work for family offices often juggle much more than just spreadsheets.Many ultra-wealthy people set up dedicated offices, which could have a handful or dozens of employees, to oversee their<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sergey-brin-wealth-management-jeff-bezos-family-offices-women-cios-2022-8"> investments</a>, philanthropy, and high-end toys, like<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-yachts-owned-by-tech-billionaires-mark-zuckerberg-jeff-bezos-2024-5"> yachts</a>. An office might look after one person's money in one city or that of multiple generations across countries.Family office employees, in turn, can be paid on par with, or even better than, banking,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-equity-salaries-at-blackstone-apollo-kkr-bain-others"> private equity</a>, and other top finance jobs. But the unique nature of the job means headhunters are often looking beyond basic finance skills when scouting candidates for jobs.In recent years, Singapore has emerged as a global hotspot to set up family offices, thanks to its business-friendly environment and lack of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-attracts-ray-dalio-sergey-brin-family-offices-2021-2">capital gains tax</a>.Billionaires like Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin have established family offices in the city-state. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reliance-industries-mukesh-ambani-new-family-office-singapore-2022-10">Mukesh Ambani</a>, Asia's richest man, also expanded his wealth management operations to Singapore in 2022.Business Insider spoke to three recruiters for family offices, two of whom are based in Singapore, to find out which traits give a candidate the best shot of landing a job in a family office.<h2 id="250f7d12-74d8-46a4-828f-083dfef98f32">1. Jack of all trades</h2>Unlike many corporate jobs' clearly-defined responsibilities, family office staff — even executives — juggle a lot, said Paul Westall, the cofounder of Agreus Group."A chief investment officer of Goldman Sachs might not fit nicely into a family office because, at Goldman, they might have 10 analysts and two assistants, while in a family office, they do all the analysis and book their flights," Westall said.Jimmy Soh, a consultant at recruitment firm AP Executive, stressed the need to wear multiple hats and cultivate multiple specializations."Not only do you have to be an investment manager, but you also have to be a family council and any additional roles coming in like a concierge service," said Soh.One Hong Kong billionaire family asked Soh to hire an<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-know-about-billionaires-wealthy-according-to-personal-assistant-2024-9"> executive assistant</a> with a $20,000 monthly salary. The candidate needed to be an accountant with an Ivy League degree who spoke three languages. The job description included planning the family's business and personal trips and managing their yacht and crew.<div type="image" title="Yacht Show Monaco" height="2620" width="4000" msid="113996580" hostid="261" sizebytes="1066772"></div>"Many families will say that the sky's the limit on the budget for these roles because they're looking for the best talent," said Soh. "They can indefinitely add more roles to the job description, which is how they justify this kind of salary."<h2 id="735b5822-dd6a-4c7c-9c35-3ee3c1b99fe1">2. Independence and all-hours commitment</h2>Family office roles also demand a high level of commitment.Phone calls could come at lunchtime — or in the middle of the night, Soh said."Most can be extremely demanding because they hire you for a specific role and can easily outsource the role to other firms," Soh said.In Asia, many family offices are still developing and roles are less defined than in Europe or the US. Candidates must often be willing to "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lessons-hint-ceo-learned-doing-dirty-work-leader-2021-3">get their hands dirty</a> and work long hours for seven days a week," said Pierre Pineau, head of Agreus Group's Singapore office."Asian families, in general, expect you to be available 24/7, and that's not for everyone," said Pineau. "It's not about yourself. It's about what's best for the family office."The jobs can also require independence. Pineau said that in Asia's emerging markets, employees often work independently in one location while the family's main office is in another country.Westall said flexibility is key. He once hired a CIO whose job description included overseeing a family's investment in purebred racehorses. "Key people that last a long time in family offices build trust because when there's an issue, they resolve it with ideas from outside the box."<h2 id="1bba166f-2ad4-4b9b-8108-ea6b7b35d0a4">3. Managing multiple family members</h2>In family offices, technical brilliance alone isn't enough to secure a role. Working closely for one family means managing wealth and relationships."One of the main attributes family offices need is emotional intelligence — someone who can work with multiple people of different levels, from the son who's 16 and you need to explain certain decisions to him, to the wife, and the granddad," Agreus Group's Westall said.Candidates must also have the communication skills to navigate the dynamics and demands of different family members."You are presenting your work to people who might not be particularly financially savvy, unlike your peers at a bank," Westall said.AP Executive's Soh said that the "intangibles" — like interpersonal compatibility and standout personality traits— often make or break candidates."You might be extremely brilliant, but you might be a very hard person to work with or have some idiosyncrasies that might not gel well with the team," said Soh. "It comes down to your personality."Getting hired often hinges on<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personality-hires-bring-soft-skills-to-work-2023-11"> personality fit</a>, said Westall. Families might reject candidates for small details like how they walk or dress — but others are open to unconventional hires.Westall shared a story of a family office executive who started as a cleaner while he was in film school. He helped the family with a script they were writing and was eventually hired to oversee investments in the family's film business."Sometimes they are not always looking for someone with obvious experience, but someone who could add value in that family office," said Westall.
