<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sarvesh Rajagopal moved back to India in 2024 after a decade in the Middle East and Europe.</li><li>He left due to career stagnation and Europe's economic challenges, including the war in Ukraine.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sarvesh Rajagopal, who lived in the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, and Germany before moving back to India. Business Insider has verified his employment history.I joined McKinsey right after graduating from my masters in India.I spent the next three years with the company in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-us-from-india-big-tech-changed-me-2024-7">India</a>, then moved to the company's office in Dubai for two years, and then to Amsterdam. Getting a chance to live and work overseas was a dream.A little while after moving to Amsterdam, I decided that I had had enough consulting. The constant travel was also getting tiring. I left McKinsey and worked for the Dutch bank ING as a corporate strategist for over a year before moving to the logistics company Wayfair in 2019. I was one of the first employees in the Berlin office, tasked with building the company's international business, which I still think was the most challenging but fulfilling period of my career.<h2 id="893dd95a-7f9c-4453-bde6-beb32c14f608">Life in Europe</h2>Things were going well from a lifestyle point of view, too.I enjoyed being done with work by 5 or 6 p.m. and having the rest of the day to myself. Public transport was a big plus — I enjoyed never owning or needing a car to get around to meet colleagues or friends for dinner or a beer.One of the best parts of Europe was that if we had a long weekend, I could go to a nearby country by train in a couple of hours.One of the only drawbacks is that it's not the best place to earn and build wealth because of high taxes.<div type="image" title="Group photo of various colleagues at office event in Berlin" height="1200" width="1600" msid="113377534" hostid="261" sizebytes="247660"></div><h2 id="e8d45754-5383-4984-99de-02128eba0b9f">Slow growth in Europe</h2>The itch to return to India started around three years ago.I'd been watching India's growth since I left and felt like I had missed the boom by leaving in 2014. Many of my friends back home have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-tech-job-launch-startup-now-make-400000-2024-4">built startups</a> or venture capital careers. I wanted to be part of India's growth story.I also felt like there was no career growth for me in Europe. In India, I had a big network from India's top tech and management schools and because of my time at McKinsey.I also wanted to be close to family, especially since my parents are getting older.My inflection point was realizing in mid-2023 that my career had stagnated because I was at a senior level and was finding it difficult to grow. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukrainian-women-train-blue-collar-jobs-workforce-gap-war-electrician-2024-8">war in Ukraine</a> and other macroeconomic factors like inflation also affected my decision.I worked with a professional coach before making a firm decision. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/took-sabbatical-returned-work-better-employeee-2024-9">I traveled around Latin America</a>, and being in a new environment really sealed the deal for me.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-job-at-meta-bali-trip-moved-into-childhood-home-2024-8">I quit my job</a> and finally moved back to India in May.<h2 id="93bdcf9f-12d3-4eba-9b17-bc4210b5a753">Adjusting back</h2>After <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-uk-life-biggest-differences-after-moving-home-space-2024-7">a decade of living away</a>, there are things I'm having to get used to again.I'm still adapting to the pollution, the traffic, and the sheer number of people. The number of cars and two-wheelers on the road has exploded, which makes driving and parking a lot more stressful.But some things have also become much more convenient since I left 10 years ago.I remember having to call a restaurant if I ever wanted to eat in, but India now has food and grocery delivery services that promise to deliver any food or household items in under 10 minutes.It's a lot easier to find and afford domestic support, and I have a cook. For my friends with newborn children, live-in nannies are available. These feel like huge luxuries compared to Europe, where my immigrant friends struggled with childcare — their parents were happy to help but could only stay in Germany for 90 days at a time.I'm also able to afford an all-inclusive apartment complex, where I have easy access to a pool, a gym, and a supermarket.I'm volunteering as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-vc-wants-see-5-traits-new-founders-fundraising-antler-2024-8">mentor for startups</a> at an incubator at my alma mater and have noticed a big mindset shift among people in their early 20s. When I graduated with my engineering degree, my classmates and I thought our only career options were to join a company, study abroad for a master's, or pursue an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management.But the students now are a lot more willing to take risks and dive into entrepreneurship.I'm currently on a career break. I want to familiarize myself with India again and then hope to build a venture of my own in the next few years.

By the end of 2023, there are expected to be as many as 18.5 million of such jobs across industries and this will almost double by 2047, says Teamlease. Here is the catch – while universities and colleges are catching up, it’s not as fast as the demand growth. The growth in green job postings is around 15% in the last one year, says LinkedIn. Naukri pegs it as high as 27% with the EV sector being the star. “According to the Global Green Skills Report 2023 by LinkedIn, India has seen a 140% jump in auto industry workers with Electric Vehicle(EV) skills from 2018-23. This is the highest growth rate globally,” said Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-founder, Great Learning. Jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs Green jobs are expected to almost double by 2047, i.e. touch 35 million. Krishnan says that the rapid industrial expansion outpaces curriculum updates in colleges, resulting in a shortage of skilled talent. Most of the expertise that’s needed to drive India’s green transformation requires strong foundational STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. “Currently, the key qualifications needed for such (green) roles would be an engineering degree with 5-10 years’ experience within the sustainability sector and experience of sustainability certification schemes,” says Ghatpande. In fact, most of the jobs require engineering degrees — both standalone or specialised to environment science. “The common degrees are Environmental Science or Engineering for roles in environmental conservation and management. Renewable Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy Studies for careers in the renewable energy sector. Agricultural Science or Sustainable Agriculture for those interested in sustainable farming practices,” says Jaideep P Kewalramani, head of employability business and COO, TeamLease EdTech. Green certifications in vogue On top of the basic degrees, there are certifications as well. Green Building Certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for sustainable construction and architecture. Certifications in Environmental Management like ISO 14001, for professionals focusing on sustainability within organisations. For now, organisations which quickly need a lot of employees with green skills are developing talent by upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce on green technologies. “Also there is an active collaboration with academia in curating programs to create talent pipelines,” says Kumar. Added to that several online learning platforms offer tailored certificate courses and modules to help professionals kickstart their careers in the EV industry. “These courses often feature industry-relevant curricula, real-world projects, live mentorship by experts, and expert-led masterclasses,” says Krishnan. India is steadfast in its commitment to go green. As such jobs explode, it’s up to the professionals and young aspirants to build their green skills to move towards a sustainable career ahead. She described her field of study in industrial and operations engineering as "the middle ground between engineering and business."After enjoying her experience as an intern at Intel between her last year of undergrad and her master's year, she decided to go back full-time first."At that point, an MBA felt like more of a longer-term goal and wasn't something I was considering seriously yet. "This initially bummed me out, but led me to think of every word as being more impactful," Melendez said.Here's what Melendez did during her application process to maximize her chances of getting in.<h2>She signed up for prep programs to get help with the application process and network with fellow applicants</h2>Melendez applied and took part in one of <a href="https://www.jumpstartadvisorygroup.com">Jumpstart Advisory Group</a>'s <a href="https://www.jumpstartadvisorygroup.com/our-events/">annual MBA summits</a> prior to applying to HBS. The summit, which is aimed at undergraduates and working professionals who aspire to attain an MBA in the next one to five years, brought together representatives from competitive MBA programs around the country, and she learned about each school's unique value and whether it would be a good fit."I took advantage of as many resources as possible," Melendez said. "If you're eligible for any prep programs, I'd recommend applying."Through Jumpstart, Melendez heard about <a href="https://mlt.org/#">Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT)</a>, which offers career and MBA prep programs for the historically underrepresented minorities, and <a href="http://www.fortefoundation.org/site/PageServer">Forte Foundation</a>, which offers MBA prep programs for women."MLT and Forte both offered a cohort-style model of 10 to 20 people," Melendez said. "You have a coach and follow a curriculum that includes GMAT coaching, personal-statement workshopping, interview prep — basically every step of the application process."Melendez added an extra bonus to these programs was getting to connect with other prospective students going through the same process. "We would critique each other's personal statements, share advice, share resources," she said. "And once we all found out which programs we'd gotten into, it was awesome to see where everyone was going."She also pointed out that these programs cost a fraction of the price of hiring a private admissions consultant. Forte's Program is a few hundred dollars, MLT's traditional program is $1,000, and the accelerated program is $3,000.<h2>She focused her essay on tying together disparate parts of her life and career</h2><a href="https://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/application-process/Pages/default.aspx">HBS' admission essay</a> prompts applicants to share what else they believe the admissions committee should know beyond their résumé. "I think it's both a positive and a negative that the prompt is so open-ended," Melendez said. "It can be overwhelming, but on the positive side, it's a blank slate and you can go wherever you want with it."Melendez said she used the admissions essay as a chance to tie together pieces of her background that needed additional context. In her essay, she talked about her family, her hobbies at the time — boxing and jiu-jitsu — and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives she'd been involved with. "At the surface level, these three things don't connect, but I realized there was a consistent thread that bound them together," Melendez said."Growing up, I think I was very aware of how hard my parents worked to create a comfortable life for my siblings and I. I grew to believe that hard work, perseverance, and the right support system can lead to success, even in the most trying of circumstances," Melendez said. "It's not so different from a boxing match or a jiu-jitsu tournament. Fighters at every level put in countless of hours of preparation and have probably had to pick themselves up from the ground more times than they'd like."For anyone struggling with the admission essay, Melendez recommended an exercise she learned at MLT. "There was an old essay prompt from <a href="https://www.fuqua.duke.edu/">Duke Fuqua School of Business</a> that asks you to list 25 things about yourself," Melendez said. "During that process, I thought about different parts of my personality, background, and life decisions that explained how I got to where I was."<h2>She wasn't afraid to highlight extracurriculars that showed her strengths, even random hobbies</h2>Melendez said she mentioned a lot of her extracurriculars that had to do with diversity and inclusion in her essay, such as her involvement in the <a href="https://www.shpe.org/">Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers</a> and Latinx-focused employee groups at Intel. "I also got involved in innovation and patent workshopping at Intel, so that helped demonstrate my technical creativity and inspiration," she added.Melendez also encourages prospective applicants to mention their random hobbies. She'd been involved in boxing since college and began thinking more about why she boxes and how that hobby helped her detach for an hour or two every day and gave her the mental reset that she needed during the application process."I decided to include my hobbies in my application because they were a big part of my life at that time. Although an MBA is a professional degree, a lot of the experience is interpersonal and social," Melendez said. "I think the more you can represent yourself in an application as a complete and multifaceted individual, the better."<h2>She went into the interview ready to show who she was beyond her résumé</h2>Melendez said a lot of the questions she got during her admissions interview at HBS focused on why she chose certain career moves or became involved in certain activities, what she would've done differently, and how she interacted and influenced those around her. "It was ultimately very conversational, reflective, and dug deeper," Melendez said."The interview is about the admissions committee trying to understand who you are as a person, rather than all of the data points they see in your application," Melendez added.HBS also has prospective applicants complete a post-interview reflection, which is a written response to the interview itself. "It's very open-ended," Melendez said. "My best advice is to have a stream of consciousness right after the interview. I recorded a voice note and talked through what I was feeling — what I'm glad we covered, what surprised me."The best piece of advice she received during her preparation was to think about what the admissions committee would say once they read her entire application."Consider four or five highlights that you want the admissions committee to remember about you," she said. "The admissions committee wants to understand who you are as a human being. The easier you can make it for them, the more likely you are to end up at the school that's right for you."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hemant Pandey shared the résumé format that has helped him land several software-engineering jobs.</li><li>He keeps job descriptions short and includes points that make for good interview stories.</li></ul>Hemant Pandey's software-engineering career was off to a good start.After an internship at Amazon during his graduate program, he landed a full-time software role at Tesla in 2018. The pay was "top notch" and it was a dream company.Pandey, who grew up in India, even invited his family to visit him in California that summer.Two weeks after they visited, he was laid off."It was my first job and getting laid off meant having to build rapport all over again in just six months," he told Business Insider. "I needed to prove myself again."He <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/poached-then-laid-off-sharing-updates-linkedin-unemployment-networking-2024-4">didn't feel comfortable</a> telling people he was let go and worried companies might see him as a bad performer and reject him before interviews.But he was proactive about looking for new opportunities and landed a job at SAP within a month.After a year, Pandey switched to Salesforce, where he stayed for two years. In 2021, he applied to Meta after learning about the company's "crazy" pay packages on tech forums.Here is the résumé format that Pandey has used since college. It got him a $500,000 senior software-engineer role at Meta and offers from TikTok and LinkedIn. In an interview, "if people ask me what I did at Salesforce, I can help them know more by explaining rather than writing a paragraph." He uses one to three bullet points for each role.Including GPA: While his master's GPA is not very "impressive," Pandey chooses to include it and sees it as an opportunity to share a story during an interview. "I generally share how I bombed my first semester and was intimidated," he said about getting a low GPA and almost losing an internship he was offered. He talks about how he had to push himself to keep up with more experienced students and eventually scored better in the following semesters. "This makes a good growth and learning-from-failures story."Ability to do basics: As engineers move to more senior roles, Pandey says the job becomes less about coding and more focused on leading teams and delivering projects. "But if I still interview for a startup, they don't really care about how I'm leading or shipping products," he said. "They care about if I can write code, if I'm tech savvy enough." To showcase his technical skills, Pandey lists projects and links to his past coding work.There's only one change he would make to his résumé if he were to revamp it today:Personal brand projects: "Your personal brand is now more and more important," Pandey said. "I write actively on LinkedIn and have a newsletter with around 4,000 subscribers," which he would list on his résumé's projects section. He would also include that he mentors students. Those additions "will start to matter more than just my tech skills and certificates."Pandey is part of a growing group of workers and business owners who embrace personal branding as a way to boost their careers.Quynh Mai, the founder of a digital creative agency, decided to embrace personal branding nearly 10 years after she began her business. <ul><li>India’s management schools have this year breached the mark of average salaries for MBA graduates at ₹ 2 million. </li><li>Several non-IIMs including SP Jain Institute of Management and Research and Xaviers School of Management have also been paying over ₹2 million average salaries. </li><li>University Business School (UBS), Punjab University (PU), recorded the highest package at ₹5.3 million this year. </li></ul>Beating the average salary packages offered in India, many top management schools in India have significantly scaled up the starting pay for students graduating in 2019. During the recent placement season, several B-schools — including Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode, <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/iit-bombay-placement-rs-32-4-lakh-top-package-for-mba-graduates-5554289/">Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)</a>, Bombay, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, Indian Institute of Foreign Technology (IIFT), Delhi and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) — reportedly offered packages of more than ₹2 million to MBA batches. The highest packages were reported at more than ₹3 million, compared to the average at nearly ₹2 million. According to a Campus Salary Hiring and Employment 2018 report by Mettl, the average salary for MBA graduates last year was recorded as ₹930,000 per annum, which has increased to more than a million this season. The trend clearly indicates business school graduates are now commanding better starting pay. As many as 55 companies breached the average salary mark for MDI this year, for instance, according to ET report. And not all are from the prestigious IIMs. In fact, the highest-paid graduates this year are reportedly from the University Business School (UBS), Punjab University, where the <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/chandigarh/ubs-touches-new-high-top-package-rs-53-lakh/711070.html">highest package</a> was recorded at ₹5.3 million this year. However, the average remuneration has been at ₹1.17 million for the 2018-19 batch. The average starting salaries for graduates of tier one colleges was recorded as ₹1.5 million, and tier two colleges at ₹534,000, annually, reports ET. The rise in pay may be because companies are now striving to hire quality talent with certain calibre and command, said Ketan Kapoor, Mettl. Startups, consulting firms and multinationals often chase the talent that they apparently find in premium business schools, he added. According to last year stats, the salary packages fetched by participating students crossed ₹2.4 million at the top three IIMs — Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Calcutta. However, several non-IIMs including SP Jain Institute of Management and Research and Xaviers School of Management also have a track of over ₹2 million average salaries by recruiters. Highest paymaster Consulting firms have been paying the highest to the fresh graduates, ET reported citing a senior official at IIM. However, banking and financial services sector also topped the charts this year during placements.
