Starring Virginia Madsen, Vanessa Estelle Williams, and <keyword id="11949123" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tony-todd" source="Orion">Tony Todd</keyword>, that version followed a young graduate student Helen Lyle (Madsen) studying an urban legend called the "Candyman" - only to become terrorized by the evil spirit, played (once again) by Todd.</p><p>Director <keyword id="11949121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nia-dacosta" source="Orion">Nia DaCosta</keyword> takes on the beloved <keyword id="11949119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="horror" source="Orion">horror</keyword> film in her new version, which premieres Friday.</p><p>Fans of the original might be wondering whether DaCosta's film is a remake, <keyword id="11949125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="reboot" source="Orion">reboot</keyword>, or sequel to the 1992 movie - and while it can be tricky to keep <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/9/16/9337121/reboots-remakes-reimaginings">track of all the different terms</a>, here's what you can expect from the new version of "Candyman."</p><div type="image" title="Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony in the new &quot;Candyman&quot; movie." height="1333" width="1777" msid="85643018" hostid="261"></div><h2>The new movie is being described as a 'contemporary incarnation' of the 1992 film</h2><p>In a press release, Universal Pictures wrote that Dacosta's film is a "fresh take" on the original, and also noted that it's a "contemporary" version of the '90s classic. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/candyman-remake-trailer-jordan-peele-2020-2">Trailers for the movie</a> have featured several key characters from the original played by the same actors (including Anne-Marie, played by Williams, as well as Todd's Candyman), so the film is most definitely not a remake. </p><p>Instead, it seems to be a sequel (of sorts), focusing on the enduring legend of the Candyman after the events of the first film.</p><p>And based on the trailer, the legend of the Candyman is significantly expanded upon from the backstory presented in the 1992 version.</p><p>In the original, the Candyman was an accomplished painter and son of an enslaved person who achieved success among the 1800s white community in Chicago. But after the painter, named Daniel Robitaille, fell in love and fathered a child with the daughter of a white patron, a lynch mob hunted him down, maimed him, and smeared his body with honey, causing him to be stung to death by bees.</p><p>His soul was then transferred to a mirror, and according to legend, can be summoned by saying his name five times in the mirror's reflection. </p><div type="image" title="Teyonah Parris in the new &quot;Candyman&quot; movie." height="1125" width="1500" msid="85643019" hostid="261"></div><h2>DaCosta's 'Candyman' presents a new addition to the character's backstory</h2><p>A trailer for the new version shows that the Candyman in DaCosta's movie was a friendly man who enjoyed giving sweets to the neighborhood kids. After razor blades were found in some candy, police beat him, tortured him, and killed him - only to find more razor blades in candy, proving the Candyman's innocence. </p><p>In another teaser, however, other elements of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/watch-new-trailer-candyman-nia-dacosta-real-cases-2020-6">Candyman's backstory are shown</a>, including a scene that matches Robitaille's story from the original.</p><p>Coupled with a longtime resident's (Colman Domingo) statement that Candyman isn't a "he, Candyman is the whole damn hive," it seems possible that the new film might present the story of Candyman as a curse that affects multiple men - not just a single evil spirit, as in the original. </p><h2>The new 'Candyman' reimagines the terrifying legend, with numerous references to the original</h2><p>Given the reappearances of Williams and Todd in their original roles, as well as the clear callback to the first movie's Candyman legend, DaCosta's version of the horror film adds new characters and plot points while still remaining faithful to the 1992 classic. </p><p>The new "Candyman" premieres Friday in theaters.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The senior narrative director of the new "Marvel's Spider-Man 2" video game spoke to Insider.</li><li>Jon Paquette teased the possibility of a Venom spinoff.</li></ul><p>At the end of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spider-man-ps4-review-marvel-playstation-4-2018-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">2018's "Marvel's Spider-Man,"</a> Insomniac Games delivered the tantalizing tease that <a href="https://www.insider.com/spider-man-movies-details-to-know-2021-12">Peter Parker</a>'s absent best friend Harry Osborn was being treated for an incurable disease using a familiar black goo — the <a href="https://www.insider.com/tom-hardy-wants-venom-spider-man-crossover-movie-2021-8">Venom</a> symbiote. </p><p>Now, Venom himself is set to be unleashed in New York City in the highly anticipated <a href="https://www.insider.com/marvels-spider-man-2-review-video-game-2023-10">"Marvel's Spider-Man 2,"</a> which is released on PlayStation 5 on Friday.</p><p>"I want this to be one of the best Venom stories you've ever experienced. We'll see what the reviewers have to say," the game's senior narrative director Jon Paquette told Insider in a recent interview.</p><p>Horror fans might recognize the gravelly voice behind Venom because <a href="https://www.insider.com/candyman-details-references-to-original-movie-plot-characters-2021-8">"Candyman" star Tony Todd</a> provided Venom's monstrous tones.</p><p>Paquette told Insider that "Spider-Man 2" creative director Bryan Intihar was the one who came up with the idea to cast Todd.</p><p>"He probably saw a new 'Candyman' trailer or something. He heard the voice and was like, 'Hey, what about Tony Todd?' He texted everybody and was like, 'What do you guys think?' And we're like, 'Oh, my God. That would be amazing,'" said Paquette.</p><p>"So, we brought Tony in and he submitted a few lines for kind of an audition. And it was like, 'Oh, my gosh, this is the exact vibe that we're going for,'" recalled the narrative director. "He fits it perfectly. Once Brian had the idea we were all like, 'How do we make this happen?'" </p><h2>'Marvel's Spider-Man 2': Will there be a Venom spinoff?</h2><p>When asked about the possibility of a Venom spinoff game in the same vein as 2020's "Spider-Man: Miles Morales," Paquette said they're waiting to see the reaction from fans.</p><p>"So, here's what we're doing. We're focused on 'Spider-Man 2,' and what we're gonna do is we're gonna wait to see how the fans react," he said. "We're gonna listen to the fans and we're gonna ask ourselves, 'Okay, what do the fans really want?'"</p><p>"We'll kind of talk about stuff after we've all had time to sleep and take vacations," he added.</p><p>Paquette said the team behind "Spider-Man 2" drew inspiration from Venom's storied <a href="https://www.insider.com/spider-man-stan-lee-scrapped-publisher-teenager-main-hero-2023-6">comic book history</a> — which could also serve as inspiration for a Venom-centric story.</p><p>"Man, I remember as a kid being in my friend's bedroom reading 'Secret Wars' and seeing the origin of the black suit," Paquette said. "We went from there all the way to the crazy <a href="https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Knull_(Earth-616)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Knull, Klyntar</a> kind of stuff."</p><p>"There's such a rich universe there, and there's a lot that the comics have done. 'Marvel's Spider-Man 2' video game director teases potential Venom spinoff: 'We're gonna listen to the fans'

The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been," DaCosta captioned the video on Twitter. </p><p>In addition to exploring the backstory of the Candyman character (first portrayed by Tony Todd in the 1992 movie of the same name), the trailer also appears to reference several real-life cases of racism. </p><p>One such vignette shows a black man being forced from his home and dragged behind a truck by several men. It could be a reference to the real-life 1998 murder of <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/white-supremacist-set-executed-killing-black-man-dragging/story?id=62549116">James Byrd Jr., who was beaten by three white men in Texas and dragged behind their truck for nearly three miles</a> until he died.</p><p>The murder became international news, with one of the men receiving life in prison while the other two received the death penalty and were executed.</p><p><div type="image" title="candyman trailer" height="587" width="1429" msid="76435078" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Another scene in the clip appears to portray the so-called "trial" and execution of 14-year-old George Stinney Jr. in June 1944. Stinney was accused of murdering two white girls, and despite a lack of evidence and no official confession, <a href="https://calendar.eji.org/racial-injustice/jun/16">was sentenced to death after an all-white jury deliberated for just ten minutes</a>.</p><p>In 2014, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2014/12/17/judge-throws-out-teens-murder-conviction-70-years-after-his-execution/?itid=lk_inline_manual_7">70 years later</a>, a judge <a href="https://www.scribd.com/doc/250402251/Stinney-Order-121714#from_embed">overturned the conviction</a> on the basis that the 1944 trial and subsequent execution had violated Stinney's constitutional rights.</p><p><div type="image" title="candyman trailer" height="584" width="1434" msid="76435080" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Other scenes in the trailer appear to portray the backstory of the fictional Candyman himself, a wealthy 19th-century black man who worked as a painter. Per the movie's synopsis, Candyman was hired to paint the portrait of the daughter of a wealthy white landowner, and the two fell in love.</p><p><div type="image" title="candyman trailer" height="596" width="1429" msid="76435082" hostid="261"></div></p><p>However, when the affair came to light, Candyman was set upon by a lynch mob, who cut off his hand, replaced it with a hook, then covered his body in honey so that bees would sting him to death. </p><p>In the new film, which is a direct sequel to the 1992 original of the same name, a painter named Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) finds inspiration in the Candyman's grisly past.</p><p>And in the latest trailer, Anthony is shown at his easel, seemingly portraying the stories of murdered black men in his paintings. </p><p>"Candyman" premieres September 25. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11949121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nia-dacosta" source="Orion">Nia DaCosta</keyword>'s 2021 "<keyword id="11949118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="candyman" source="Orion">Candyman</keyword>" remake hits theaters Friday.</li><li>Insider spoke with <keyword id="11964426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vanessa-estelle-williams" source="Orion">Vanessa Estelle Williams</keyword> who starred in the 1992 original and has returned. </li><li>Williams said the remake reframes Black trauma through "the voice of Black people." </li></ul><p>Time has not been kind to the original 1992 "Candyman" film.</p><p>The film was never a huge critical hit, but sometime during the early-mid '00s it developed a cult following among Black horror fans and was hailed as a misunderstood but important intervention in the horror film genre. </p><p>The 90s flick is now regularly filed under the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/white-savior-films-green-book-hollywood-racism-people-of-color-film-2019-3?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">critical title of "white savior narrative"</a> alongside films like Michelle Pfeiffer's misguided "Dangerous Minds" and 2011's "The Help." In the case of "Candyman," the title was earned through short-sighted political ambitions: the film is set within a poor housing project in Chicago called Cabrini-Green and prods but never challenges several issues such as gentrification, the history of American racial violence, and slavery through the lens of Helen, a well-to-do white graduate student. </p><p>To borrow from the writer and Black horror scholar Tananarive Due, 1992's "Candyman" is what we might think of as Blacks in Horror - that is, Black people simply present in horror films rather than Black Horror - a horror film that actively grapples with the social and political realities of Black life. 2021's new "Candyman" remake, however, firmly sets its sights on the latter. </p><p>"What I like to say is that the remake is a reframing of the racialized trauma against Black people from the voice of Black people," said Vanessa Estelle Williams, who plays Anne-Marie McCoy, a returning cast member. </p><p>"It's updating what the landscape has allowed us to really talk about. And people are ready to hear it based on all the things that have happened from the pandemic and then the George Floyd incident that took over the world. In terms of his [Floyd's] baby girl, 'daddy changed the world.'" </p><h2>In the 'Candyman' remake, Cabrini-Green is no longer a housing project but a gentrified suburb </h2><div type="image" title="candyman universal" height="962" width="1792" msid="85693979" hostid="261"></div><p>Co-written and directed by the relative newcomer Nia DaCosta ("Little Woods, and the forthcoming "The Marvels"), "Candyman" (2021) reignites the legend of the Candyman - a hook-wielding, vengeful, Black supernatural monster (originally portrayed by Tony Todd) who makes bloody victims of anyone brave enough to conjure his presence by saying his name five times in front of a mirror. </p><p>This time, however, we move through the story with Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a Black visual artist who lives in a now-gentrified Cabrini-Green with his well-connected art dealer girlfriend Brianna (Teyonah Parris). The couple is part of a new generation of young Black Americans who have more access to social and economic capital through institutions and their families -  a change to the original story that Williams said she was "pleased" to find. </p><p>"Well, I would think in all this time that we had moved on up a little bit," she said.</p><p>"And because they were in that particular class it was a brilliant way to illustrate how you're still having to deal with a marginalized existence. And it's not like when we move on up we forget about our cousins and our other parts of our family that's living in Cabrini still. I think that's the reality of any upwardly mobile Black person... you still have people in your family, immediate or extended family, who are aren't doing well at the same time. And so all of our stories cover that."</p><p>Williams is not the only cast member from the original film who returns in DaCosta's film, but she is certainly the only one who can be named here without fear of spoilers. Williams's re-casting was emphatically revealed in the film's first official trailer with a short scene that has <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8057549/Folks-react-Say-Vanessa-Williams-Candyman-trailer.html]">since been given the viral meme treatment.</a> In the clip, Williams soulfully hushes Abdul-Mateen II's Anthony McCoy as he is about to say the name "Candyman."</p><p>Williams told Insider that she thought her "first viral moment" and all the memes that were produced were "hilarious, crazy, and funny." The scene in question, however, was born out of her deep connection to the character of Anne-Marie.   </p><p>"It was spontaneous and out of my transporting myself into Anne-Marie, her vernaculars, and her being in the church," Williams said of the now-famous scene. "That's a church move. Like, don't say that! So many ushers and deaconesses have shushed me in church like that."</p><h2><keyword id="11949120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jordan-peele" source="Orion">Jordan Peele</keyword>'s involvement convinced Vanessa Estelle Williams to join the 'Candyman' remake </h2><div type="image" title="Teyonah Parris in the new &quot;Candyman&quot; movie." height="1125" width="2000" msid="85693982" hostid="261"></div><p>Williams was full of praise for the film's director Nia DaCosta. She described the 31-year-old who also has directing credits on the cult British series "Toy Boy" as "brilliant," "cutting edge," and exactly what the "Candyman" franchise needed. Although Williams said she knew she wanted to return to the franchise when she first heard Jordan Peele would be involved in the project. </p><p>"I'm a huge fan of Jordan Peele. So of course when I heard that he was going to be involved in a remake, a retelling of 'Candyman,' I wondered to myself, 'I would think they'd need some of the survivors from that film,'" Williams said. </p><p>The Oscar-winning "Get Out" filmmaker served as a producer and co-writer on the film and his district touch lingers throughout. Many of his narrative preoccupations such as gentrification, white and Black neoliberal politics, and the Black middle class are present. The film also borrows from his hyper-digital, bold primary-color visual style. For large parts of the film's first press run - the original 2020 release was shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic - the film was even regularly described as "Peele's reimagining" rather than DaCosta's. </p><p>It's unclear whether this was down to Universal's shrewd marketing decision to push Peele's involvement or a general symptom of misogynoir-tinged ambivalence to DaCosta's talent. Nevertheless, fans of the franchise will delight in the fact that the remake ends in what has become typical Peele fashion: blood-tingling, horrific ambiguity. At the film's end, very little is tied up or explained. But there are signs of a potential Candyman multiverse. So will there be a sequel to the remake? </p><p>"I would absolutely be interested. I'm interested in doing everything related to Nia DaCosta, and Jordan Peele, and the whole Monkeypaw [Peele's production company] family. So yes, yes, and more yes," Williams said at the potential of any further "Candyman" films. </p><p>"I haven't heard any whispers, but you know, the company and everyone are hard at work. And we've got so many things coming up. I'm open, available, and hoping that I'll be asked to come and join them again." </p><p>"Candyman" opens in theaters Friday.</p>
