But in order to become speaker with the necessary 219 votes on the House floor, Pelosi used her skill to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-opposition-nancy-pelosi-speaker-house-has-virtually-collapsed-2018-11">court Democrats</a> on the fence about supporting and even turned dozens of members who had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/16-house-democrats-state-opposition-to-nancy-pelosi-speaker-house-letter-2018-11/">publicly opposed her</a> on the campaign trail and in previous leadership elections.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"I am particularly proud to be the woman Speaker of the House of this Congress, which marks 100 years of women winning the right to vote, as we serve with more than 100 women in the House of Representatives - the highest number in history," Pelosi said in a floor speech upon becoming speaker.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">She made a series of promises in the speech as well, pledging to tone down the hyper-partisanship that has plagued Washington for years.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"We have no illusions that our work will be easy, that all of us in this chamber will always agree," Pelosi said. "But let each of us pledge that when we disagree, we will respect each other and we will respect the truth."</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"And I pledge that this Congress will be transparent, bipartisan and unifying; that we will seek to reach across the aisle in this Chamber and across the divisions in this great nation," she added.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Pelosi also brought along a handful of high profile celebrity guests to view her speech, including singer Tony Bennett, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, and television and fashion personality Tim Gunn.</p><h2 style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Pelosi takes the reigns in the middle of a government shutdown</strong></h2><p>As speaker, Pelosi will now be in a key position when negotiating with President Donald Trump and the Republican-led Senate as she takes over in the midst of a government shutdown quickly approaching the record for longest in history.</p><p>In her speech, Pelosi addressed the shutdown, which brought Washington to a standstill over the Christmas holiday.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"We will debate and advance good ideas no matter where they come from," she said. "And in that spirit, Democrats will be offering the Senate Republican appropriations legislation to re-open government later today - to meet the needs of the American people, to protect our borders, and to respect our workers."</p><p>Pelosi has already drawn a hard line on Trump's key priority for reopening the government by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nancy-pelosi-says-funding-for-trumps-border-wall-is-off-the-table-2018-12">not providing funding</a> for the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border. Unfortunately, Rotherham couldn't disclose the identify of WhiteBoard's "insiders," as they're referred to, because of a confidentiality agreement.</p><p>Still, he explained that the insider group is made up of 50 to 75 current and former White House, Department of Education, and congressional staff members, as well as governors. There's also a pretty even split along party lines.</p><p>For Clinton, Linda Darling-Hammond, an emeritus professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education, was the top pick. Abbey Road Studios is opening its doors to overnight guests for one night only

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56426933bd86effb5b8bdd24-1440-1080/trump-apprentice fired nbc.jpg" alt="Trump Apprentice fired nbc" data-mce-source="NBC" /><p class="source"><span>NBC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>As the march toward the November presidential general election continues, many presume Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have all but clinched their parties' respective nominations.</span></p><p>With that in mind, Whiteboard Advisors, an <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> policy-consulting group, asked reputable policy leaders <a href="http://www.whiteboardadvisors.com/sites/default/files/Whiteboard_Insider_May%202016_0.pdf">the following question</a>:</p><p>"If she/he is elected President, who will Hillary Clinton's/Donald Trump's Secretary of Education be?"</p><p>For Donald Trump, some of the experts came back with shocking picks. Notably, they mentioned Ted Nugent, a musician and vocal supporter of the NRA, and Omarosa Manigault, a reality show personality infamous with fans of The Apprentice, Trump's reality series, during which he coined his famous catchphrase, "You're fired."</p><p class="p1">"I think nobody has any idea," Andy Rotherham, senior advisor at Whiteboard Advisors, told Business Insider. "I suspect the survey respondents are in a state of disbelief that they are even being asked this question."</p><p class="p1">The answers were particularly surprising as Whiteboard posed the question to education policy experts, not an uniformed group. Unfortunately, Rotherham couldn't disclose the identify of WhiteBoard's "insiders," as they're referred to, because of a confidentiality agreement.</p><p class="p1">Still, he explained that the insider group is comprised of 50 to 75 current and former White House, Department of Education, and congressional staff members, as well as governors. There's also a pretty even split along party lines.</p><p>For Clinton, Linda Darling-Hammond, an emeritus professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education, was the top pick. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and Chris Edley, a former dean of the Berkeley School of Law and cofounder of the Opportunity Institute, were other contenders.</p><p>For Trump, former presidential candidate Ben Carson is at the top of the list. Policy experts are so stunned by Donald Trump's candidacy they picked a rock musician and reality TV star as potential members of his cabinet

Gaga said in a caption to the picture she shared with her 5.5 million followers on Instagram on Monday.</p><p>Gaga met Kinney in 2011 when filming the video for "You &amp; I" in the open fields of Nebraska. Despite the romantic title, the video was full of disturbing imagery including simulated torture of Gaga.</p><p>In a foreshadowing of the relationship to come, Gaga revealed that she wore her mother's wedding dress for the video. It also showed Gaga -- clad as a mermaid -- having sex with Kinney. </p><p>Kinney popped the question to Gaga, an Italian American whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, over a Valentine's Day dinner at the New York restaurant Joanne Trattoria which is owned by her parents, according to celebrity magazine Us Weekly.</p><p>Kinney, 33, has acted in a range of television shows, such as "Chicago Fire," and films. </p><p>He had a recurring role on the television series "The Vampire Diaries" and played a Navy SEAL in "Zero Dark Thirty," Kathryn Bigelow's controversial thriller about the killing of Osama bin Laden.</p><p>Gaga started off in the New York underground before her 2008 debut album "The Fame," with its infectious dance sound and her racy persona, became an unexpected global smash hit.</p><p>Her success was fueled by the popularity of her song "Poker Face," in which Gaga hints at her bisexuality and boyfriends' struggles to understand it.</p><p>Gaga became known for her sexually charged live shows as well as her outrage-inducing attire, including a dress made of raw meat that she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010.</p><p>More recently, Gaga has sought to show herself as more than a sensational persona.
