'Bodyguard' is the latest hit British TV show that Netflix has streamed to American audiences, and it has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

When Ruth Myers created the wardrobe for the 1996 film "<keyword id="700" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="emma">Emma</keyword>," she skipped a famous step of British period-piece costumery: tea-dipping. Though befitting of early 19th-century British <keyword id="6" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="fashion">fashion</keyword>, submerging the clothes in tea would have created a well-worn effect antithetical to what writer and director Douglas McGrath envisioned for his adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel. Instead, he and Myers wanted outfits that looked "completely free and completely lovely," the costume designer told Insider in honor of the film's 25th anniversary this month.So, they opted to dress the "Emma" actors in vibrant hues of cotton-candy pinks, baby blues, and lush greens. To many Austen enthusiasts at the time, this decision was inconceivable. "I met an awful lot of resistance in those days," Myers continued, "from the people who were manufacturing and making these clothes, who were absolutely horrified that I should have pink and beautiful apple green and all these wonderful colors."<div type="image" title="gwyneth paltrow toni collette emma" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106515" hostid="261"></div>McGrath, who was known at the time for his previous writing on "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/18/movies/film-thank-you-saturday-night-live-for-firing-me.html">Saturday Night Liv</a><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/18/movies/film-thank-you-saturday-night-live-for-firing-me.html">e</a><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/18/movies/film-thank-you-saturday-night-live-for-firing-me.html"></a>" and "<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/longterm/movies/videos/bulletsoverbroadwayrhinson_a019ce.htm">Bullets Over Broadway</a>," stayed true to Austen's plotline, following young society woman Emma Woodhouse (<keyword id="7753" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gwyneth-Paltrow">Gwyneth Paltrow</keyword>) on her matchmaking endeavors.But on the heels of a <a href="https://www.newstatesman.com/culture/books/2015/12/austenmania-why-1995-was-year-jane-austen-catapulted-pop-culture">mid-'90s resurgence</a> of on-screen Austen adaptations, the Texas-born writer set out to deliver his own fresh, youthful take on the genre while still paying homage to the source material.With the help of a British costume designer unafraid to go head-to-head with disapproving traditionalists, he did just that.<hr /><h2>Myers spent weeks drawing the 'Emma' designs in Helen Mirren's London flat</h2>For roughly five weeks before production began, Myers stationed herself in the living room of Helen Mirren's flat overlooking London's Battersea Park, sketching designs for "Emma" by hand. Because the Miramax film's budget was tight (an <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116191/">estimated $6 million</a>) and the residence was vacant, Mirren lent the space to her childhood friend, who lived in Hollywood full-time. Myers designed around 120 <keyword id="571210" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Costumes">costumes</keyword> during her stay there, averaging about five drawings per day."Without Helen, I would never have done the film," she said. Myers had McGrath's blessing from start to finish. She remembered covering the floor of Mirren's flat with patterned, colorful fabrics one evening and inviting the director over to review them."He reacted very strongly to them," she recalled. "This was exactly what they wanted."<div type="image" title="ruth myers' emma drawings" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106518" hostid="261"></div>In the early stages of conceptualizing the wardrobe for "Emma," Myers delved into research about early 19th-century England.She eventually stumbled upon "Mrs. Hurst Dancing &amp; Other Scenes From Regency Life," a book featuring <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3639121-mrs-hurst-dancing">watercolor paintings</a> drawn by artist Diana Sperling between 1812 and 1823. The tiny figures, clad in "ice-cream shades of costumes," became her bible, she said, adding, "I threw everything else away."Myers became entranced by Sperling's fluid and playful depiction of Regency life, inspiring her to push McGrath's film away from the neutral tones and rigid costuming so frequently featured in Austen adaptations. She pictured Emma, a young woman disinterested in the prospect (and constraints) of marriage, in ensembles reflective of her character."Emma, she's a free, self-thinking, active person. Her father encouraged that," Myers said, noting that "Emma" remains her all-time favorite of the author's novels. "If we were doing that, we needed to have the freedom to do it properly."<div type="image" title="emma in field 1996" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106522" hostid="261"></div>Freedom, in Myers' mind, began with ridding women of corsets. It was a bold decision for an Austen adaptation, and one that gave the designer a "very horrible time in England for quite a long time." Aware of the criticism her designs would receive from some of Austen's most-devout readers, she trudged forward with Sperling's art as her sole guide. "These paintings, they're watercolors with line drawings. They're very lyrical and they look absolutely free. They're not restricted by corsets," she reasoned.To give the illusion of high busts on the women, the actors wore Wonderbras and push-up bras beneath their dresses."When you look at a painting of 1820s costumes, they don't look as though they're heavy, but when you have to hide a corset, which is what they did, they are really quite heavy. I wanted not to have that throughout the film. So a lot of the women's stuff was made," Myers added.<div type="image" title="mr knightley and emma" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106525" hostid="261"></div>She sent her designs to John Bright's costume house, <a href="https://www.thejohnbrightcollection.co.uk/about/">Cosprop</a>, to create the majority of the women's clothes, unable to rent the pieces she wanted from third parties, as many period pieces do. The trick, however, was bringing her vision to life while adhering to the budget. "That was a question of persuading and controlling people into doing things very cheaply," Myers said. Rather than wearing the stiff lace-up boots customary to the period, Myers' society women donned ballet shoes from <a href="https://www.repetto.com/us/?___store=repetto_usus&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw0qOIBhBhEiwAyvVcf16Uq7i7jOfLN6yqW0yxHzq0l0EJ62qtNGje9qV2suuHvbq0DqI8vhoC93gQAvD_BwE_BwE">Repetto</a>, a French brand created in 1947 and worn by premiere dancers. She <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1993/11/05/movies/review-film-building-a-future-on-a-shaky-past.html">gained critics' attention</a> for her performance in "Flesh and Bone" at 20 years old. Her popularity continued to surge thanks to "Se7en," a film that led to a Saturn Award nomination and <a href="https://www.etonline.com/gwyneth-paltrow-reminisces-on-past-relationship-with-brad-pitt-we-were-a-very-90s-couple-164791">a highly-publicized, three-year relationship with costar Brad Pitt.</a>So for Myers, receiving news that the rising star would wear her designs was a dream."It was a hole-in-one. Once they say 'Gwyneth Paltrow,' you look at your vision and you look at a picture and you go, 'Oh my God, this is beyond easy,'" Myers said. <div type="image" title="emma in green" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106530" hostid="261"></div>After securing the lead role by<a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1996-07-21-ca-26277-story.html"> impressing McGrath</a> with her Texas accent at her first read-through, the Los Angeles-born actress arrived on set "prepared to play," Myers remembered.Despite her stateside roots, Paltrow had all the trappings of the ultimate Regency-era demoiselle. She was proficient in <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1996-07-21-ca-26277-story.html">shooting a bow and arrow, singing an on-key lullaby, and speaking in a polished British accent on arrival</a>. Of the roughly 22 costumes Myers recalled designing for Emma, the pink cotton frock she wore in the archery scene, filmed in Dorset, was the designer's favorite. <div type="image" title="emma mr knightley archery scene" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106533" hostid="261"></div>"This is the dress that gave traditionalists the horrors because it was bright pink," she said, adding that it's still the ensemble that makes her the proudest. "It was Gwyneth, and it was summer, and it was everything joyful about the English country."The designer paired the look with an elbow-high leather glove she discovered while researching early-19th-century archery attire. "I remember being thrilled because it looked exactly as I'd hoped and imagined it would. The weather was perfect. Everything about it was exactly as it should have been."<div type="image" title="emma mr knightley emma 1996" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106536" hostid="261"></div>But landing a lead with fabulous posture and sample-size proportions doesn't clear a costume designer of all obstacles.According to Myers, "75%" of her job is making sure actors respond well to the designs she makes them, insisting that a period-piece costume designer's main challenge is "putting actors in clothes that embarrass them."Toni Collette, a then-23-year-old Australian actress cast as Emma's simple-minded but sweet sidekick Harriet Smith, took slightly longer to warm up to the empire waistlines and ringlet updos deemed fashionable in Regency England, Myers recalled. "She came from a different culture," Myers explained of Collette, adding that it was challenging for any "young actress coming in to play opposite Gwyneth at that time in Gwyneth's life."Collette came into her own while posing for Emma's "very hand-done" pastiche of Greek and Roman mythology, a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/art/Regency-style">popular style of portrait</a> at the time. "That was Toni's most successful costume," Myers said of the "lighthearted" look.<div type="image" title="harriet smith emma" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106539" hostid="261"></div>Because of the film's jam-packed schedule and limited budget, Myers outsourced what she could by renting menswear and hats."It's a lot of trying to make things work and trying to rent stuff that you can to fill in so that you don't have to do everything from scratch," she said. For Alan Cumming, who played Mr. Elton, she desired a specific silhouette with a "very narrow" cut and "extremely high collars." To make sure his costumes came out exactly the way she wanted, Myers designed all of his pieces herself."Alan Cumming is one of the greatest joys of all time to work with because he just loves clothes," she said. "He loves putting things on. So you give him something, he works it."<div type="image" title="mr and mrs elton in emma 1996" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106544" hostid="261"></div><hr /><h2>Despite Austenites' initial resistance to Myers' take on 19th-century fashion, she eventually received recognition</h2>Now, 25 years after "Emma" premiered in theaters, the Regency period's influence shows itself in mainstream fashion trends like puffy sleeves, corset tops, and empire-waisted <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/culture/on-and-off-the-avenue/the-allure-of-the-nap-dress-the-look-of-gussied-up-oblivion">Nap Dresses</a>.Myers attributes the renewed interest in the era (coined "<a href="https://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/gallery/regencycore-trend">Regencycore</a>") to "Bridgerton," Netflix's wildly popular adaptation of Julia Quinn's romance novels. Like the wardrobe for "Emma," the dresses in "Bridgerton," a series set in 1813 London, are bright, candy-colored statements."That sort of series has a huge effect. The most influential things have been copied. Together with the pandemic and the joy of those costumes, which were divine, [people] loved them," she said. <div type="image" title="frank churchill and emma" height="900" width="1200" msid="85106546" hostid="261"></div>"Emma" had its own ripple effect. Shortly after the film's theatrical release, Emma's wedding dress, a simple white gown with lace details and short sleeves, became the blueprint for many brides-to-be. "For several years after that dress was used, it was the most copied wedding dress," Myers said. Though the Oscar for costume design went to "The English Patient" that year, receiving recognition from her peers was "very gratifying" for Myers, especially after being met with such resistance from traditional Austenites."They thought this was very disrespectful," she said, referring to die-hard fans' initial reactions to her colorful representation of early 19th-century clothing. "They didn't mind quite as much when I got the nomination," she quipped.

After box-office hits like "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bullockmccarthy.htm" target="_blank">The Heat</a>" and "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=identitythief.htm" target="_blank">Identity Thief</a>," <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVfin74Qx3tUlx6LwsEIq9Ob-mcZW-V0L" target="_blank">trailers for "Tammy"</a> would make audiences believe McCarthy is aiming for another high comedy note at theaters; however, there's just one problem. 
Critics say the film isn't actually funny. 
Instead, "Tammy" is more of a drama about a broken woman disguised as a comedy in clever ads. 
The film, currently sitting at <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tammy_2014/reviews/?type=top_critics" target="_blank">21% on Rotten Tomatoes</a>, is expected to open to around <a href="http://www.boxoffice.com/statistics/movies/tammy-2014?q=tammy" target="_blank">$25 million</a> this weekend, which would be <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Actor&amp;id=melissamccarthy.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm" target="_blank">less than the debut of her breakout role</a> in 2011's "<a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=wiigapatow.htm" target="_blank">Bridesmaids</a>" ($26.2 million).

When I first read it, it was around the time that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dylann-roof-was-a-paranoid-narcissist-says-fbi-profiler-joe-navarro-2015-6">Dylann Roof</a> happened and there was a real reticence on the part of FBI officialdom to refer to that as terrorism... My dad's from northern Ireland, he grew up during the troubles, I grew up with an awareness that terrorists come from everywhere and have all sorts of motivations and so it seemed like that was a very relevant thing, but I don't think either of us envisaged that white supremacy might take this sort of bizarre jag towards the mainstream or rather that the mainstream might jag toward that by the time it came out.<div><iframe width="800" height="600" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/I3lFBq7_CPk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>Gottlieb: How do you think this movie affected the way you see terrorism then?Daniel Ragussis:&#xa0;The main thing that I learned in terms of working with Mike is that it seems to be, at least in the way that it's applied, a very subjective definition and one that's often unfortunately politically motivated, and I say unfortunately because there probably should be a lot more consistency in terms of how we look at those things. Whether we call something terrorism or not has a great impact as to the way the law enforcement community approaches it, the way that the media approaches it, public policy approaches it and so unfortunately the choice of words becomes an incredibly important thing in terms of how our society deals with and views the issue.Radcliffe: [Homicides] are&#xa0;not all politically motivated but it instills terror and in that sense it is. Any kind of murder with any sort of political or religious ideology could be defined as terrorism but as you [points to Ragussis] say, that has so much sway over how people deal with stuff and actually it might be much more useful to just start referring to all gun crimes as a form of terrorism<blockquote class="pullquote float_right">It might be much more useful to just start referring to all gun crimes as a form of terrorism.</blockquote>, because at this point it does always almost feel like a political statement of some kind. Ragussis: It can cut both ways because on the one hand, certain crimes probably are not getting a certain kind of attention - like the Dylann Roof example - because they're not labeled as terrorism. Certain crimes that are labeled as terrorism are getting such undue attention and attention that really affects the political discourse in such a way as to do all sorts of things: create laws that invade our civil liberties, which is a topic that [gestures to Radcliffe]...Radcliffe: I'm in a play about that, yeah ["Privacy" at The Public Theater].Ragussis: Yeah exactly, so it has this massive outsize impact upon our government, our laws, the nature of our society, so it's a tricky thing because it's sort of a very selective attention that can work both towards good or bad for the society.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/577c14dc4321f102278b5e24-1920/daniel%20radcliffe.png" alt="Daniel Radcliffe Imperium" data-mce-source="Lionsgate" data-mce-caption="Daniel Radcliffe in &amp;quotImperium.&quot;">LionsgateDaniel Radcliffe in "Imperium."</img></div></div></div>Gottlieb: To me, going undercover seems like acting.Radcliffe: I made the same assumption...&#xa0;but actually what you do, you have to be able to maintain all the time, so it's much easier to just be yourself - be a version of yourself that also happens to hold these views. Mike just went in and was very much him. I think he gained almost a reputation or nickname of being called something like the "Hippie Nazi" because he was so chill and would never engage with people. That was his whole thing.&#xa0;Ragussis:&#xa0;You want to have good relationships and be friends with everyone. You don't want to be alienating one particular person or group both for your own safety and also for the purposes of the investigation. You don't know which of those eight guys is actually going to be the guy that you want to foster a relationship with and follow deeper into and all the rest of it. So you actually have to use charm, social skills - you have to be the guy that everybody likes.Radcliffe: And he said he was just incredibly helpful.Ragussis: Yeah like he would do the dishes.Radcliffe: Also I would like to say, Mike was doing this at a very different time than we've set the movie in, so Mike was doing it with like a big Casio&#xa0;cassette player strapped to his ankle the whole time and he had to go and flip the tape every 90 minutes. Gottlieb: That's a lot more pressure&#xa0;than the wristwatch [which Nate wears to secrety record his meetings with the white supremacists].Radcliffe: I'm wondering if the advent of the internet and social media has made it almost impossible for an undercover to go undercover more than once because Mike did multiple things for like 12-15 years.Ragussis: Right because it's spread so rapidly.Gottlieb: You'd be outed on forums and other online resources.Ragussis: Exactly, and then you also have to appear at the trial, so once you're outed in that way, I don't know how you repeat. As an actor, I don't believe that I have to try and live this the whole time at all... Also, I think it's fair to say, Mike is much smarter than the average person at this, so Mike's ability and Nate's, my character's, ability to read and digest all of this - the world of information and all of that stuff - and to parrot it. Most of these guys, as long as you're agreeing with them, no one's going to question how much you believe in it.Ragussis: There's also a reason that these ideologies are appealing to people. There's a certain sense of simplicity and consistency about them and once you accept a few basic premises, then you're able to construct a worldview that's very coherent and consistent... These are ideologies that were appealing to masses of people back in Nazi Germany all the time.Radcliffe: I think my biggest takeaway from this film is that as much as we want to demonize these people and in a way demonize their views, we should try and find a way of getting them into this conversation<blockquote class="pullquote float_right">As much as we want to demonize these people and in a way demonize their views, we should try and find a way of getting them into this conversation.</blockquote>unfortunately, as awful as that sounds, because the more you ostracize them and aggressively dismiss them, the more it just plays into their worldview that everything is a conspiracy against them... I think we have to try and believe that there are some people out there that in the right circumstances could have their minds change and recount this terrifying belief system.Ragussis: And as with anything else, I don't really know how you confront it or deal with it unless there's some level of understanding of what it is that you're dealing with. The problem with terms like "monster" is they don't give you any understanding. They don't give you any access as to the mechanism that's going on there and why the people are behaving the way they are. I think if you're going to try to dismantle that or change it, you have to understand what's going on and what's happeningRadcliffe: Absolutely, you have to engage with it.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/577c14fd4321f1d01a8b5f1a-1920/daniel%20radcliffe%20imperium.png" alt="Daniel Radcliffe Imperium" data-mce-source="Lionsgate" data-mce-caption="Daniel Radcliffe in &amp;quotImperium.&quot;">LionsgateDaniel Radcliffe in "Imperium."</img></div></div></div>Gottlieb: The idea of leader-less resistance, that plays into that. It's not just one uniform group.Radcliffe: Leader-less resistance should be called out for what it is, which is a mechanism for the higher-ups of these organizations to not get their hands dirty. That's why this exists. It's not like a lone-wolf phenomenon. They encourage this lone-wolf phenomenon because it means that people enacting their worldview without them ever having to actually commit a crime - people like Tracy Letts' character in the film.Ragussis: It's very convenient for the ideological leadership. They're basically able to sit there and write pamphlets and make speeches and do all sorts of other thingsGottlieb: Host radio shows…Ragussis: Exactly. And get a great deal of affirmation and approbation and even money and all the rest of it without actually committing crimes or putting themselves at risk or anything else. In some ways it's a very cynical viewpoint from the leadership.Radcliffe: Weird to think of these guys as being cynical [laughs].Ragussis: [laughing]&#xa0;They're not all true idealists.Radcliffe: But that is a point that the film makes as well.
