Free tomatoes to i-pill notification, recent quick commerce incidents that sparked outrage

Bengaluru, A Jaipur-bound truckload of tomatoes, a precious commodity across the country now, went missing in what is suspected to be another "heist" linked to Karnataka. A trader has claimed that he lost touch with the driver and cleaner of his truck, which was carrying 11 tonnes of tomatoes from the district headquarters town of Kolar, en route to the Rajasthan capital. A complaint has been filed with Kolar police, in which the trader has alleged that the truck was carrying tomatoes worth Rs 21 lakh. Representatives at Kolar Agricultural Produce Market Committee, from where the produce left, pegged the price of tomatoes at Rs 160 per kg. According to the complaint, the truck loaded with 750 crates left the local 'mandi' in Kolar on July 27 and the consignment was scheduled to reach its destination in Jaipur for supply to a local vegetable market there. The truck, which was being tracked through the GPS tracking system, had apparently covered around 1,800 km since it left Kolar. The vehicle was supposed to reach its destination in Jaipur by Saturday night. But when it did not do so, the trader tried to contact the driver but his phone was switched off, a senior police officer said. The concerned trader then filed a complaint at Kolar police station stating that the truck had gone missing. "Based on a complaint received from one of the traders based in Kolar, we have initiated a preliminary inquiry into the matter. No FIR has been registered in the matter yet since we had to verify whether the driver had met with any accident on the way to its destination or if the tomatoes got stolen. So, an inquiry was initiated and we collected details from the complainant in the matter," the police officer said. The Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the huge consignment of tomatoes which was to be unloaded at Jaipur was apparently delivered at a local vegetable market in Ahmedabad, he added. Vinay Reddy, the trader who sent the tomato consignment, said that his father Muni Reddy filed the police complaint after the truck went "missing". "We loaded 11 tonnes of tomatoes which were packaged in 750 boxes in a truck from Kolar tomato mandi. The consignment was to be unloaded at Mohana Sabji Mandi, Jaipur by Saturday midnight. The vehicle also had an inbuilt GPS tracking system," Vinay Reddy, owner of SVT traders, said. Reddy said that he last spoke to the driver around 9 pm on Saturday and he had assured that by 11 pm, the consignment would reach the mandi in Jaipur. "However, in the morning, I got to know that the consignment had not reached the market. When I tried to contact the driver, his phone was also found to be switched off. There was no other way to reach him. So, we had to approach the police here," he said. Reddy said he then informed his acquaintances in Jaipur and later received information from their local sources that the tomatoes had been sold at Ahmedabad. "We suspect that these tomatoes were sold off by the driver but we still haven't been able to get in touch with him. It has also come to notice that the same truck was not used to transport the consignment to Ahmedabad. We need to get it verified," he said. Reddy said that the consignment belonged to three parties and that they were also likely to reach Ahmedabad and file a complaint at the local police station there as well. Earlier this month, tomatoes worth Rs 2.5 lakh were stolen from a farm in Goni Somanahalli village in Belur taluk of Karnataka's Hassan district. Thieves allegedly decamped with 50-60 bags of tomatoes from a woman farmer's agricultural field, following which a case of theft was lodged at the Halebeedu police station. In another such incident, a couple from neighbouring Tamil Nadu was arrested by the police for hijacking a truck laden with 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes in Bengaluru after faking an accident to extort money. According to the police, the couple was part of a gang of highway robbers that intercepted Mallesh, a farmer from Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, at Chikkajala on July 8. They demanded money claiming that the farmer's truck had bumped into their car. The farmer was transporting tomatoes in his Mahindra Bolero jeep to Kolar. When he refused to pay them, the miscreants assaulted him, pushed him out of the truck and drove away with the vehicle loaded with 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes. Based on the complaint lodged by the farmer, the RMC Yard police tracked the movement of the vehicle and zeroed in on the gang.

The thieves allegedly decamped with 50-60 bags of tomatoes from the farm located in Goni Somanahalli village of Hassan district Tuesday night. Based on the woman farmer, Dharini's complaint, a case of theft was filed at Halebeedu police station. Dharsaid that the theft happened as they were planning to cut the crop and transport it to the Bengaluru market as the tomato price reached above ₹ 120 per Kilogram. Dharani said that the thieves stole the 50-60 bags of tomatoes and destroyed the remaining standing crop. "We incurred huge losses in bean harvest and had taken loans to grow tomatoes. We had a good harvest and, incidentally, prices were also high, besides taking the 50-60 bags of tomatoes, the thieves also destroyed the remaining standing crop," said Dharini. A police officer at Halebeedu police station said that it is the first case of tomato theft filed at his police station. Dharani's son also requested the state government for compensation. "Her son also requested government for compensation and demanded an investigation. A complaint has been filed at Halebeedu police station. It is the first such case filed of tomato loot at our police station," said the police officer at Halebeedu police station. Dharini along with her family members had grown tomatoes on two acres of land which were allegedly stolen. Like other states, Karnataka has also seen tomato prices increasing very rapidly in recent days. Tomato prices in Bengaluru range from ₹ 101 to 121 per kilogram. The high prices have been attributed to the sudden temperature increase in March and April that resulted in pest attacks on tomato crops, leading to decreased yields and higher market rates. (ANI)

The tomato crop has been greatly affected by the cyclone in the state as well as in neighbouring states resulting in skyrocketing prices. Along with the cyclone, the thunderstorm rains have also affected the crop. Kolar district in the state grows large quantities of tomato compared to other districts. Currently, the tomato crop is grown in 16,328 hectares in the state. There is good crop yield in June and August months. The state produces 9.50 lakh metric tonnes of tomato every year, according to experts. In the Kolar market, last year, 15 kilograms of tomato were being sold for Rs 15. Now it has gone up to Rs 80 and Rs 100. The wholesale price in Shivamogga, Karwar, Hubballi, Dharwad is between Rs 50 and Rs 70, they said. Presently, three to four trucks of tomatoes are arriving from <keyword id="207609" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nasik" source="Orion">Nasik</keyword> to Bengaluru market. Bangaloreans shift from tomato to tamarind as prices skyrocket

The humble tomatoes are now going at princely rates up north, with the kitchen staple going at ₹250 per kg in Gangotri Dham and ₹180 to 200 per kg in Uttarkashi district. A vegetable seller said tomatoes have become dearer in the region all of a sudden. "Consumers are bearing the brunt of the rising prices of the tomatoes in Uttarakashi. People are not even willing to buy them. In Gangotri, Yamunotri, tomatoes are going at ₹200 to ₹250 per kg," Rakesh, a vegetable seller told ANI. Many attributed the sharp rise in the vegetable prices to the prevailing heatwave in key tomato-growing areas, as well as heavy rains, leading to a disruption in supply chains. Tomatoes also have a relatively lower shelf life, which is also believed to be having a bearing on their prices. In Chennai, tomatoes are currently selling at ₹100-130 per kg. Faced with a price pinch, the Tamil Nadu government has started selling tomatoes at a subsidized rate of ₹60 per kg at ration shops in state capital Chennai in a bid to bring some respite to the consumers amid the price spiral. Like many states, Karnataka has also seen tomato prices go through the roof in recent days. Tomato prices in Bengaluru range from ₹ 101 to 121 per kilogram. On Wednesday, the price of tomato was between Rs 90-100 a kg in Delhi. "In wholesale, we are getting tomatoes for Rs 60-80 kg. In retail people will get it for Rs 90-100. The rates have gone up in the last 10-15 days due to rains," says Deepak, a tomato seller in Delhi. The reason behind this is the dip in supply due to heatwaves in tomato-growing areas and heavy rain. Meanwhile, the sky-rocketing price of tomatoes in Uttar Pradesh is forcing the common people to cut down on their daily food menu. A vendor said, "'Tomatoes have reached Rs 100 a kg. Those who need 1 kg are buying 250 grams. Tomatoes have become costlier in the last 4-5 days. This is affecting people's pockets a lot." Tomato prices have recently shot up in the markets across the country from Rs 10-20 per kg to a price of Rs 80-100 per kg. The reason behind this is the dip in supply due to heatwaves in tomato-growing areas and heavy rain. Ajay Kedia, a Mumbai-based commodity market expert and head of Kedia Advisory said, "This year, for a variety of reasons, fewer tomatoes were sown than in prior years. As the price of beans surged last year, many farmers switched to growing beans this year. However, a lack of monsoon rains has caused the crops to dry out and wilt. The limited supply of vegetables, particularly tomatoes are due to <keyword id="17836270" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="crop-damage" source="Denny">crop damage</keyword> caused by heavy rainfall and extreme heat." Speaking to on Tuesday, Mohammad Raju, a resident of Delhi said, "Tomato is being sold at a price of Rs 80 per kg. The rate has suddenly shot up in the past two-three days." Tomato prices have also skyrocketed in the southern state of Karnataka and its capital city Bengaluru as incessant rains have damaged the crop and made transportation difficult. The price of tomatoes touched Rs 100 per kg in a market in Bengaluru and traders said that due to heavy rain, the crops have been damaged. According to the database maintained by the Price Monitoring Division under the Department of Consumer Affairs, per kilo tomato on an average rose from Rs 25 to Rs 41 in retail markets. Maximum prices of tomatoes in retail markets were in the range between Rs 80-113. The rates of staple vegetables were in tune with the rise in their prices in wholesale markets, which jumped about 60-70 per cent on average in June. (ANI)

Farmers are unable to cultivate tomatoes as their lands are wet due to continuous rains and they say that the situation has affected 50 per cent of the production of the crop. There is a 40 per cent reduction in the arrival of tomatoes from Kolar, Chintamani, Doddaballapur, Chikkaballapur, Malur, Magadi and other surrounding areas to APMC. "We are also not getting tomatoes from the various parts of Maharashtra. Due to an increase in the demand, the prices are moving upwards," says Gopi, Vegetable Sellers Association President. "If the same climate continues, the tomatoes rate will touch close to Rs 100," he says. Sources in the Horticultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Processing Society (HOPCOMS), explained that every day there was an arrival of 2 tonnes of tomatoes and now the supply is decreasing for over a week. Due to the shortage of supply, the prices have shot up. If the trend continues, tomatoes are all set to burn the pockets of the common man, they say.

Dhaniya, diapers and tomatoes among the top picks for Indians on grocery apps in 2022

In the <keyword id="6360421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-capital" source="Orion">national capital</keyword>, petrol price rose by 30 paise per litre and diesel was hiked by 35 paise per litre. The prices of petrol and diesel have crossed the ₹100 per litre mark in many states, pinching the common man's pocket. In <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>, petrol is retailing at ₹104.14 per litre and diesel is available at Rs 92.82 per litre after the latest price revision. On the other hand, in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s financial capital, <keyword id="6358070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="Orion">Mumbai</keyword>, petrol became costlier by 29 paise per litre and its rate stands at ₹110.12 per litre, the highest across all four metro cities. Diesel costs ₹100.66 for one litre in Mumbai, a hike of 37 paise. There has been a constant rise in the prices of petrol and diesel for the past six days and the rates are soaring all-time high. The prices of petrol and diesel remained steady on October 4, 2021 but saw a daily hike after that. Diesel prices have now increased on 14 out of the last 17 days taking up its retail price by ₹4.20 per litre in Delhi. The price of diesel earlier increased by 20-30 paise per litre but since Wednesday it has been increasing by 35 paise per litre. With diesel price rising sharply, the fuel is now available at over ₹100 a litre in several parts of the country. This dubious distinction was earlier with petrol that had crossed Rs 100 a litre mark across the country a few months earlier. Petrol prices had maintained stability since September 5 but oil companies finally raised its pump prices since last week given a spurt in the crude prices lately. Petrol prices have also risen on 11 of the previous 13 days taking up its pump price by ₹2.95 per litre. OMCs had preferred to maintain their watch on prices on global oil situation before making any revision in prices. This is the reason why petrol prices were not revised for the last three weeks. But extreme volatility in global oil price movement has now pushed OMCs to effect the increase. Across the country as well petrol and diesel prices increased by 30-40 paise per litre but their retail rates varied depending on the level of local taxes in the state. Fuel prices in the country have been hovering at record levels on account of 41 increases in its retail rates since April this year. It fell on few occasions but largely remained stable. Crude price has been on a surge, rising over three year high level of over $82 a barrel now. Since September 5, when both petrol and diesel prices were revised, the price of petrol and diesel in the international market is higher by around $9-10 per barrel as compared to average prices during August. Under the pricing formula adopted by oil companies, rates of petrol and diesel are to be reviewed and revised by them on a daily basis. The new prices becomes effective from morning at 6 a.m. The daily review and revision of prices is based on the average price of benchmark fuel in the international market in the preceding 15-days, and foreign exchange rates. Petrol and diesel prices hit fresh record high, increase for 6th straight day

The country's love for <keyword id="41887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biryani" source="Orion">biryani</keyword> only seems to be growing as online food delivery platform <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> said on Tuesday that <keyword id="25903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indians" source="Orion">Indians</keyword> ordered 115 plates of biryani per minute in 2021. The report mentioned that over 4.25 lakh new users made their Swiggy debut by ordering a chicken biryani, while the most binged snack of the year was <keyword id="83759" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="samosa" source="Orion">samosa</keyword> with about 5 million orders on Swiggy, equal to the population of New Zealand. "Swiggy's sixth annual StatEATstics report reveals how Indians ordered 115 plates of biryani per minute, samosas equal to the population of New Zealand, and enough tomatoes to play the Spanish Tomatina festival for eleven years," the company said in a statement. "In 2020, 90 biryanis were ordered per minute, which has gone up to 115 in 2021, which comes to 1.91 per second," the statement said. While samosa was ordered six times more than <keyword id="713747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chicken-wings" source="Orion">Chicken Wings</keyword>, pav bhaji was India's second favourite snack with 2.1 million orders. With a total of 2.1 million orders, gulab jamun was the most ordered dessert on Swiggy followed by rasmalai with 1.27 million orders. The search for healthy food on Swiggy doubled in 2021, and health-focused restaurants on Swiggy HealthHub witnessed a 200 per cent increase in orders. Bengaluru emerged as the most health-conscious city, followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai. Instamart delivered over 28 million packs of fruits and vegetables alone in 2021. Tomatoes, bananas, onions, potatoes, and green chilies were the top five fruits and veggies delivered in under 30 minutes. The total bananas ordered on Instamart outweighed the Statue of Liberty by 2.6 times. Indians ordered 115 biryanis per minute on Swiggy in 2021

New Delhi, Apr 22 () FieldFresh Foods Pvt Ltd on Wednesday said it has tied up with online food delivering platforms Zomato and Swiggy along with door-to-door delivery app Dunzo for home deliveries of its premium food brand, Del Monte. Under the partnerships, Del Monte range of premium food products, including tomato ketchup, mayo, pasta, olive oil and fruit drinks will be delivered to consumers' homes amidst the continuing lockdown, the company said in a statement. "In such unprecedented times, we are striving to ensure continuity in the supply of our products to consumers. In our efforts to ensure the same, we have partnered with app-based delivery platforms for smooth and safe delivery of our products across major cities, enabling accessibility and convenience for the consumers," FieldFresh Foods CEO Yogesh Bellani said. As part of the tie up, Zomato has started home delivering Del Monte products in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with Kolkata, Pune, Mumbai and Delhi-NCR on the anvil, it added. Zomato has created a Del Monte store under its new Zomato Market section where consumers can order Del Monte product of their choice. Similarly, through the Del Monte' partnership, Swiggy home deliveries will start with Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar in the East region, followed by Bengaluru, Delhi NCR and other major cities over the next few days, the statement added. Dunzo is currently doing doorstep delivery for Del Monte in Bengaluru with Chennai and Pune going live shortly. "We are happy to partner with leading delivery startups in this endeavor. FieldFresh Foods ties up with Zomato, Swiggy, Dunzo for home deliveries

New Delhi, June 23 (IANS) Three Indian developers have joined top 10 winners of Google Android Developer Challenge that encourages developers around the world to build apps using machine learning. The three apps developed by Indians are AgroDoc, Leepi and UnoDogs. Developed by Navneet Krishna from Kochi, AgroDoc helps farmers diagnose plant disease and make treatment plans. Leepi, developed by Prince Patel from Bengaluru, helps students learn hand gestures and symbols for American Sign Language. UnoDogs which helps owners better support their pet's wellness, providing customized information and fitness programmes has been deve;loped by Chinmany Mishra from New Delhi. The machine learning technology "is becoming more accessible to the developers who build the apps you use every day," said Jacob Lehrbaum Director of Developer Relations, Android. To encourage more developers around the world to build apps using machine learning, Google launched the Android Developer Challenge last year. "And after months of hard work, today the 10 winners of the Android Developer Challenge are launching their apps ready for you to try out," Lehrbaum said in a statement. One app called AgriFarm helps farmers detect plant diseases and prevent major damage in fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, corn and potatoes which has been developed in Balochisan.
