Bengaluru, A Jaipur-bound truckload of tomatoes, a precious commodity across the country now, went missing in what is suspected to be another "heist" linked to Karnataka. A trader has claimed that he lost touch with the driver and cleaner of his truck, which was carrying 11 tonnes of tomatoes from the district headquarters town of Kolar, en route to the Rajasthan capital. A complaint has been filed with Kolar police, in which the trader has alleged that the truck was carrying tomatoes worth Rs 21 lakh. Representatives at Kolar Agricultural Produce Market Committee, from where the produce left, pegged the price of tomatoes at Rs 160 per kg. According to the complaint, the truck loaded with 750 crates left the local 'mandi' in Kolar on July 27 and the consignment was scheduled to reach its destination in Jaipur for supply to a local vegetable market there. The truck, which was being tracked through the GPS tracking system, had apparently covered around 1,800 km since it left Kolar. The vehicle was supposed to reach its destination in Jaipur by Saturday night. But when it did not do so, the trader tried to contact the driver but his phone was switched off, a senior police officer said. The concerned trader then filed a complaint at Kolar police station stating that the truck had gone missing. "Based on a complaint received from one of the traders based in Kolar, we have initiated a preliminary inquiry into the matter. No FIR has been registered in the matter yet since we had to verify whether the driver had met with any accident on the way to its destination or if the tomatoes got stolen. So, an inquiry was initiated and we collected details from the complainant in the matter," the police officer said. The Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the huge consignment of tomatoes which was to be unloaded at Jaipur was apparently delivered at a local vegetable market in Ahmedabad, he added. Vinay Reddy, the trader who sent the tomato consignment, said that his father Muni Reddy filed the police complaint after the truck went "missing". "We loaded 11 tonnes of tomatoes which were packaged in 750 boxes in a truck from Kolar tomato mandi. The consignment was to be unloaded at Mohana Sabji Mandi, Jaipur by Saturday midnight. The vehicle also had an inbuilt GPS tracking system," Vinay Reddy, owner of SVT traders, said. Reddy said that he last spoke to the driver around 9 pm on Saturday and he had assured that by 11 pm, the consignment would reach the mandi in Jaipur. "However, in the morning, I got to know that the consignment had not reached the market. When I tried to contact the driver, his phone was also found to be switched off. There was no other way to reach him. So, we had to approach the police here," he said. Reddy said he then informed his acquaintances in Jaipur and later received information from their local sources that the tomatoes had been sold at Ahmedabad. "We suspect that these tomatoes were sold off by the driver but we still haven't been able to get in touch with him. It has also come to notice that the same truck was not used to transport the consignment to Ahmedabad. We need to get it verified," he said. Reddy said that the consignment belonged to three parties and that they were also likely to reach Ahmedabad and file a complaint at the local police station there as well. Earlier this month, tomatoes worth Rs 2.5 lakh were stolen from a farm in Goni Somanahalli village in Belur taluk of Karnataka's Hassan district. Thieves allegedly decamped with 50-60 bags of tomatoes from a woman farmer's agricultural field, following which a case of theft was lodged at the Halebeedu police station. In another such incident, a couple from neighbouring Tamil Nadu was arrested by the police for hijacking a truck laden with 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes in Bengaluru after faking an accident to extort money. According to the police, the couple was part of a gang of highway robbers that intercepted Mallesh, a farmer from Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, at Chikkajala on July 8. They demanded money claiming that the farmer's truck had bumped into their car. The farmer was transporting tomatoes in his Mahindra Bolero jeep to Kolar. When he refused to pay them, the miscreants assaulted him, pushed him out of the truck and drove away with the vehicle loaded with 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes. Based on the complaint lodged by the farmer, the RMC Yard police tracked the movement of the vehicle and zeroed in on the gang.

Based on the woman farmer, Dharini's complaint, a case of theft was filed at Halebeedu police station. Dharsaid that the theft happened as they were planning to cut the crop and transport it to the Bengaluru market as the tomato price reached above ₹ 120 per Kilogram. Dharani said that the thieves stole the 50-60 bags of tomatoes and destroyed the remaining standing crop. "We incurred huge losses in bean harvest and had taken loans to grow tomatoes. We had a good harvest and, incidentally, prices were also high, besides taking the 50-60 bags of tomatoes, the thieves also destroyed the remaining standing crop," said Dharini. A police officer at Halebeedu police station said that it is the first case of tomato theft filed at his police station. Dharani's son also requested the state government for compensation. "Her son also requested government for compensation and demanded an investigation. A complaint has been filed at Halebeedu police station. It is the first such case filed of tomato loot at our police station," said the police officer at Halebeedu police station. Dharini along with her family members had grown tomatoes on two acres of land which were allegedly stolen. Like other states, Karnataka has also seen tomato prices increasing very rapidly in recent days. Tomato prices in Bengaluru range from ₹ 101 to 121 per kilogram. The high prices have been attributed to the sudden temperature increase in March and April that resulted in pest attacks on tomato crops, leading to decreased yields and higher market rates. (ANI)

The US-China relations have deteriorated after the COVID-19 outbreak, with President Donald Trump squarely blaming Beijing for allowing the disease to spread across the world. The relations have further worsened over allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang province, autonomy of Hong Kong, Tibet, and technology theft. In a statement on Monday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the products subject to the import ban are cotton, apparel, computer parts, and hair products. The fifth ban is on all products made with labour from the Lop County Number 4 Vocational Skills Education and Training Center in Xinjiang. These goods are produced with state-sponsored forced labour in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where the Chinese government is engaged in systemic human rights abuses against the Uyghur people and other ethnic and religious minorities, the DHS statement said. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had earlier issued five Withhold Release Orders (WRO) to uphold the ban. The WROs prevent goods from being imported into the US when there are accusations of forced labour. "The Trump Administration has led the world in calling attention to the Chinese Communist Party's (CPC) egregious human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and we've taken action to back up our rhetoric," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. "These actions send a clear message to the PRC (People's Republic of China) that it is time to end its practice of state-sponsored forced labour and to respect the human rights of all people," he said. In line with the WROs, the CBP will now detain shipments of these goods. The ban on goods produced using forced labour is in line with the US customs laws. "These orders demonstrate that the world will not stand for the PRC's human rights abuses against Uighurs and members of other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang, which include subjecting individuals to forced labour and stripping them of their freedom and agency to choose how and where they work," Pompeo said. By taking this action, the DHS is combating illegal and inhumane forced labour, a type of modern slavery, used to make goods that the Chinese government then tries to import into the United States, said Acting DHS Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli. When China attempts to import these goods into our supply chains, it also disadvantages American workers and businesses, he pointed out. "President Trump and this department have and always will put American workers and businesses first and protect American citizens from participating in these egregious human rights violations," he said. In fiscal year 2020, the CBP has issued an unprecedented 12 WROs, including eight on products from China. In July, the US sanctioned three senior members of the CPC for the "unjust detention and abuse of Uighurs, ethnic -Kazakhs and members of other minority groups in Xinjiang". China is accused of mass detentions, religious persecution and forced sterilisation of Uighurs and others in the resource-rich northwestern province. When I add that it's the Inca capital you fly to on your way to visit Machu Picchu, their eyes light up. It's beautiful, and I love living here, but it's far from perfect. There's been political instability and crime. But for me, Cusco has always proved worth the downsides.I first visited here in 2013 and immediately fell in love with it. Cusco has a vibrant cultural scene with frequent public events. There are amazing restaurants that serve Peruvian and international cuisines. It has great hiking trails from the historic center. There's an almost endless number of day trips you can take to fascinating archeological sites and beautiful lakes, waterfalls, and mountains.In 2019, I moved here from Seattle. I'd taught middle school for 12 years and thought I deserved a break. It seemed like the obvious place for my sabbatical.I could take any random job that would sponsor my work visa without needing to earn much. My one-bedroom apartment in Seattle cost about $2,000 a month, including utilities and internet. My first apartment here was a shared two bedroom and cost only $125 a month, though I eventually moved into a one-bedroom place of my own, which cost $200 and was easy to find on Facebook.Four years later, it's now $210 a month, with everything included. My kitchen is small, and the yard out front is shared with the three other apartments in my building. Any of them would have paid enough to cover my expenses in Cusco, so I picked the job that seemed the most fun, working with a local tour agency.I planned to go back to the US in May 2020.In Peru, the COVID-19 shutdown was particularly strict. The borders and airports closed on March 16, 2020, and didn't open again until that November. In May, a seat on an evacuation flight to the US was awarded on a case-by-case basis, for emergencies only. I didn't even try to get on a waiting list.At the time, Cusco, with a population of about 430,000, still had comparatively <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7207123/">few cases and only four confirmed deaths</a>. In contrast, the US looked like a disaster zone. So when I went home after the borders opened, I changed my plans and returned to Cusco. But paradise has its problems.When Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was arrested in December, the country erupted in protests. The violent repression by the army and police left <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peru-deadly-protests-dina-boluarte-2023-1?">dozens of unarmed protesters killed</a>, sparking more protests against the violence.In Cusco, protesters blocked roads, isolating the city until supplies ran dangerously low. Food prices spiked. Cooking gas was almost impossible to buy, forcing some people to start communal soup pots on open fires in the historic plazas. Gasoline for cars was so scarce that the city announced that there was no fuel for garbage trucks.When the news stressed me out, I'd walk down my street to watch kids playing basketball next to my favorite ice-cream shop. If I could eat an ice-cream cone and watch kids on a playground, things couldn't be that bad, I reasoned. I didn't go to the protests, so I was never in any danger.I grumbled about food prices with everybody else but didn't need to buy cooking gas in January. I felt more camaraderie with my neighbors, complaining about the price of tomatoes and gossiping about the political chaos in Lima.The protests ended in February, but the underlying problems weren't solved. Things have gone back to normal for now.But I decided that I should have a backup place to go if things flared up again. Peru's neighbor Colombia has a digital-nomad visa, so I decided to look into Medellín as plan B. I plan to visit Colombia in February. With the worst of the protests seemingly over, it doesn't feel pressing.The protests weren't the first time my love for Cusco was tested.I've lived in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Cusco is where I've experienced the most crime. In over 30 countries, this is the only place I've been pickpocketed on the bus. I've lived in a dozen cities and towns, but nowhere else has a thief broken into my home, stealing my computer and camera. I was home alone that night and, thankfully, didn't wake up. Cusco is also the only place I've been drugged at a bar, though I wasn't robbed or assaulted.Cusco doesn't feel like a dangerous place, and I chalk up these things more to letting my guard down. I shouldn't have accepted a drink from a stranger. The break-in followed an attempted burglary at a neighbor's house, after which I should have double-checked the locks on my windows.In the US, the risk of mass shootings in grocery stores and at the schools where I worked scared me. I'm not trying to minimize crime in Cusco, but zipping up my pockets to avoid pick pocketing and not accepting drinks from strangers to avoid the risk of spiking feels more bearable than the constant threat of gun violence.I was born in Seattle and have family there, but in my five years there before moving here, I didn't feel I belonged. I have been in treatment for bipolar disorder since 2008 and know to pay attention to changes in my mood. In Cusco, close to the equator, the sun wakes me up between 6 and 6:30 a.m. year-round.I work remotely as a freelance travel writer and can set my own work schedule. I can make time in the afternoon to go for a hike by starting early or working late.Nowhere is perfect. I'm considering the choice between a place where depression, anxiety, and fear of mass shootings are normalized versus a place where political chaos and theft are much more common. But it's my day-to-day experience that matters more to me. The isolation I felt in Seattle, versus the community I have in Cusco, makes the choice easy. Cusco wins, every time.

I moved from Seattle to Peru. There's been crime and political violence, but the friends I've made here make it worth it.

The second part, which started streaming on Netflix on Friday, continues to follow Assane on his journey to seek long-overdue justice. The second part ends with Hubert under arrest in connection with embezzling money and having Babakar and journalist Fabienne Bériot (played by Anne Benoît) killed.While it's a promising start at justice, it's still not guaranteed that Hubert will actually face any consequences for his crimes. In the fourth episode of the second part, Hubert is brought into the police station for questioning for insurance fraud related to the diamond necklace, but he uses his connections to avoid having to reveal anything. Similarly, while Hubert may or may not finally be brought to justice, Assane is still wanted for many crimes, including stealing the infamous diamond necklace from an auction months prior. Not much is known about his whereabouts at the end of the second part.
