As India reopened after two dreadful years of Covid-19, the country saw a re-emergence of infectious diseases and a new variant of the hand-foot-and-mouth disease, also known as <keyword id="13885432" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tomato-flu" source="Orion">tomato flu</keyword>, created quite a scare across many states. <keyword id="6384473" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tomato" source="Orion">Tomato</keyword> flu is a rare viral infection that could be a new variant of the viral hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a common infectious disease targeting mostly children aged one to five years. The Kerala Health Department took precautionary measures to monitor the spread of the viral infection and prevent its spread in other parts of India. In September, Assam reported over 100 cases of tomato flu, sounding an alarm for the state health department. The maximum number of cases were reported from two schools in Dibrugarh district. The <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> and Tamil Nadu governments had also issued advisories on tomato flu. Though the tomato flu disease is not seen as life-threatening, healthcare experts warned that any further spread of the disease may hit schools again after the Covid-19 pandemic. Health officials also said that the chances of adults contracting the disease are feeble. Bhawuk Dhir, dermatologist at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, said that this is a clear sign of heading towards an era of viral diseases. "Clearly, we are heading towards an era of viral diseases with the rampage of Covid-19, Monkeypox and now hand-foot-and-mouth disease -- as was predicted by various researchers in the past," Dhir had told IANS. "Tomato flu is caused by Coxsackie virus A16 (a non-polio enterovirus), which is highly contagious and spreads through secretions from the nose, throat, fluid from the blisters and fecal-oral route," Dhir added. In most cases, it is a mild self-limiting viral disease and requires supportive care for recovery. A few may develop complications such as meningitis and disseminated infection. The Union Health Ministry also issued guidelines on Tomato flu, underlining that its treatment is similar to other viral infections like isolation, rest, plenty of fluids and hot water sponge for relief from irritation and rashes. Supportive therapy of paracetamol for fever and body ache and other symptomatic treatments are required. "Tomato flu is a self-limiting infectious disease as the signs and symptoms resolve after a few days," the ministry guidelines said. No antiviral drugs or vaccines are available for the treatment or prevention of Tomato Flu. "The term tomato fever was used because of the red-coloured blisters which resemble a tomato. A similar outbreak was reported in Kerala in 2007," according to Dhir. Although not many new cases are being reported now, the best way to prevent this disease is maintaining proper hygiene and sanitisation of the surrounding environment as well as preventing the infected child from sharing toys, clothes, food, or other items with other non-infected children.

Encourage the child to use a handkerchief in case of a runny nose or coughing,” it added. It further advised the use of warm water to clean skin or for bathing the child. According to WHO's technical lead on Covid Maria Van Kerkhove, at least 16 countries have reported about 700 cases of BA.4, while more than 300 cases of BA.5 have been found across at least 17 countries, CNBC reported. The new sub-variants do not cause severe infection than the original Omicron strain, but they appear to be more contagious, Van Kerkhove was quoted as saying during a Q&amp;A on the organisation's social media platforms on Wednesday. She noted the WHO is monitoring BA.4 and BA.5 to determine if they will eventually overtake BA.2 as the dominant strain worldwide. "We don't know how this variant will behave, how these sub-variants will behave in other countries that had a dominant wave of BA.2," Van Kerhkove said. "This is what remains to be seen." A recent study, not yet peer-reviewed, showed that BA.4 and BA.5 have the ability to avoid immunity induced by both previous Covid infection and vaccination. The findings by researchers from the Africa Health Research Institute in South Africa could signal a fresh wave of infections by the BA.4 and BA.5. Last week, a report by the UK Health Security Agency showed that South Africa reported the highest - 395 cases of BA.4 and 134 cases of BA.5 as of May 6. Other countries that detected the variants include Austria, UK, US, Denmark. Belgium, Israel, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Australia, Switzerland, Botswana, Portugal,A Belgium, Hong Kong, Canada, Israel, Norway, Pakistan, Spain and Switzerland, the report said. The report noted the number of sequences is low, but "the apparent geographic spread suggests that the variant is transmitting successfully." Van Kerkhove also mentioned another Omicron subvariant called BA.2.12.1, which has been detected in 23 countries. She said there are more than 9,000 reported sequences of the subvariant, most of which comes from the US, the report said.BA.2.12.1 made up about 42.6 per cent of all new cases in the U.S. during the week that ended on May 7, according to data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Van Kerkhove said that the higher growth rate of BA.2.12.1 can likely lead to increased transmission globally, but it has shown no difference in hospitalisation rates in comparison to BA.2. She urged governments across the world to closely monitor BA.2.12.1, BA.4, BA.5 and other sub-variants that could emerge in the future, emphasising the need to maintain Covid testing and sequencing.
